King David was a mighty king, but had his human flaws.
Transcript
00:00Shalom and welcome back. Today I want to talk about the mighty King David. King David was a man after Yahweh's heart, but not always. He sinned a couple times, and I want to talk about one of them times right now.
00:15In 1 Chronicles chapter 21, the unsanctioned census. Now, I'm going to read this to you, and if you have a Bible, you can follow me, or you can study it later. It's your call, but here we go.
00:31It states here, and Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel. He influenced them, and David said to Job, and to the rulers of the people, go, number Israel from Beersheba, even to Dan, and bring the number of them to me that I might know it.
00:53And Job answered, Yahweh, make his people a hundred times so many more as they be. But my sovereign, the king, are they not all my sovereign servants? Why then doeth my sovereign require this thing? Why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
01:14Nevertheless, the king's word prevailed against Job, and wherefore Job departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
01:24And Job gave the sum of the number of the people unto David, and all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand men that drew a sword.
01:37Judah was four hundred, threescore, and ten thousand men that drew a sword.
01:41Now, Job, of course, Job questioned David's motives and intentions, but, you know, you can go so far to question the king, you know.
01:50I mean, if you second-thought him or anything, he'd put you in a dungeon, or he could actually kill you, execute you.
01:59But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them, for the king's word was abominable to Job.
02:05And Elohim was displeased with this thing, therefore he smote Israel.
02:12David said unto Elohim, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing.
02:17But now I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant, for I have done very foolishly.
02:24And Yahweh spoke unto Gad, David's seer, saying,
02:27Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith Yahweh, I offer thee three things, choose one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
02:38So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith Yahweh, choose thee, either three years of famine, or three months, to be destroyed before thy foes,
02:49while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee, or else three days, the sword of Yahweh,
02:56even the pestilence in the land, and the angel of Yahweh destroying throughout all the coast of Israel.
03:03Now, therefore, advise thyself what word I shall bring again unto him that sent me.
03:11So Yahweh's giving David three options.
03:15You know, he's basically saying, Pick your poison.
03:17He's going to spank him in one way, but he's giving David the choice, What do you want?
03:23And David said unto Gad, I am in great strait.
03:29Let me fall now unto the hand of Yahweh, for very great are his mercies.
03:35But let me not fall into the hand of man.
03:39So Yahweh sent pestilence upon Israel, and there fell Israel seventy thousand men.
03:45And Elohim sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it, and as he was destroying, Yahweh beheld,
03:53and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is not enough.
03:59Stay now thine hand.
04:01And the angel of Yahweh stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jesuit.
04:07And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of Yahweh stand between the earth and the heaven,
04:15having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Israel.
04:19Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
04:25That shows you some kind of fear they had, really, you know.
04:29They knew they did wrong.
04:30They fell on their faces trying to appease them.
04:33David said unto Elohim,
04:34Is it not that I commanded the people to be numbered?
04:38Even I, it is that, have sinned, and done evil indeed.
04:43But as for these sheep, what have they done?
04:47Let thine hand, I pray thee, O Yahweh, my Elohim,
04:51be on me and on my father's house, but not on thy people,
04:56that they should be plagued.
04:57So David's trying to take full responsibility here.
05:00Please leave the people alone.
05:01It's not their fault.
05:03You know, punish me.
05:04Now we'll go to 21, 18.
05:09Then the angel of Yahweh commanded Gad to say to David,
05:13that David should go up and set up an altar unto Yahweh
05:17in the threshing floor of Ornan Jebusite.
05:21And David went up at the saying of Gad,
05:24which he spoke in the name of Yahweh.
05:26And Ornan turned back and saw the angel of his four sons with him hid themselves.
05:37Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
05:40And David came to Ornan.
05:43Ornan looked and saw David and went out of the threshing floor and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
05:48And David said to Ornan,
05:51grant me the place of this threshing floor that I might build an altar thereon unto Elohim or Yahweh.
05:59Thou shalt grant it to me for the full price that the plague may be stayed from the people.
06:06And Ornan said unto David,
06:09Take it to thee and let my sovereign, the king, do that which is good in his eyes.
06:16Lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings and the threshing instruments for wood.
06:22And the wheat for the meat offering, I give it all.
06:27And King David said to Ornan,
06:29Nay, I will verily buy it for a full price.
06:34For I will not take that which is thine for Yahweh, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
06:43So David ain't just going to take it, use his power to, you know, his authority to take it.
06:47You know, he's going to, he's going to buy it fair and square.
06:49He's going to deal fairly with them.
06:51So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
06:57David built there an altar unto Yahweh and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings and called upon Yahweh.
07:05And he answered him from heaven by fire unto the altar of burnt offering.
07:12And Yahweh commanded the angel and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
07:18At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan, the Jebusite,
07:27then he sacrificed there for the tabernacle of Yahweh, which Moses made in the wilderness and the altar of the burnt offering were at the same,
07:36that same season, that same season, the high place of Gibeon.
07:41David could not go before it to inquire of Elohim for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of Yahweh.
07:49So David, David knew he messed up, you know, it was unauthorized, you know, it wasn't commanded for him to do that.
07:58But he made an atonement for his sin, covered his sins by doing the sacrifice, altering.
08:05He dealt fairly with Ornan.
08:08He felt, you know, he didn't steal his property or anything.
08:11He didn't try to confiscate it, you know, under fortune for some kind.
08:17He just bought it fair and square.
08:21And Ornan, being a nice guy he was, offered it up to him.
08:25And, you know, what we could take out of this is, you know, you don't go against the word of Yahweh like that, you know,
08:34especially if you're a king because Yahweh, he holds people in position.
08:41And he holds them more responsible for than average people because he's the one to put them in that, in those positions for a reason.
08:50And if they deal treacherously or unfairly to their people, you know, they're going to have to answer to it later on.
08:57I mean, real later on, the great white throne judgment.
09:01But that was one of the sins of David.
09:07And he felt really bad about it, repented, did all he could to justify it, you know, try to make Yahweh whole again.
09:17But that's all I wanted to study that with you.
