00:00Venice 82 is coming to an end and today is Leonardo di Costanzo's day, presenting his third Italian film in competition.
00:13After the beautiful reaffirma, he returns to tell the story of human nature inside prison, therefore the concept of guilt, atonement and in this case above all of self-awareness of the evil of the wrongdoing.
00:24The story is that of Elisa, a young woman played by Barbara Ronchi who has been in prison for 10 years and must serve another 10 years in prison for killing and burning her sister's body.
00:38And the story, um, starts from the assumption that Elisa does not remember anything of the facts she committed, and her meeting with a criminologist, um, will push her to investigate the causes of this amnesia, of her not remembering what she did, setting her on a path of awareness and very painful, which however could represent a glimmer of healing, of becoming aware of what she did.
01:08The film is based on real studies by criminologists and Costanzo has also shown in prison that he cares deeply about the condition of the human race in prison or in any case when confronted with his own guilt.
01:29In this case, the premise of the film is interesting and very relevant in a society where media scandals are the order of the day.
01:42The premise of the film is to consider monstrosity as part of humanity and therefore not to alienate the monster from the human being because in this way.
01:56The monstrosity becomes something exceptional.
02:05On the other hand, for Costanzo, for the protagonists of his film, monstrosity, the terrible acts that are committed are born precisely from humanity, from the banality of evil.
02:15And this aspect of the film is very interesting.
02:19It is a pity that it remains mainly on the surface, to give more space instead to the story of this character played by Ron Chi.
02:29From this point of view, the film is fairly standard.
02:36It tackles an important theme, but it doesn't do so thoroughly.
02:40Despite this, Ron Chi's performance is very measured and the film is nevertheless very elegant, set on the border between Italy and France in these snowy woods.
02:57And therefore the atmosphere that is created generates a suspension not only of reality, but also of judgment towards this woman who is aware of her guilt, but struggling to accept it in herself.
03:06It is unlikely that the film will make any difference in the awards list of this Venice 82 already in the definition phase, but we will wait for the outcome of the decisions of the jury led by Alexander Payne.
03:25No.
