00:00Francois returns to the Venice Film Festival.
00:05The French director has been invited to participate in the competition at Venice 82 with his adaptation of the novel by Cam, The Stranger.
00:17The film therefore immediately finds itself faced with a very complex task, namely that of adapting into images a novel that for the most part of its most interesting narrative twists takes place inside the protagonist's head.
00:30And to play this enigmatic character, this stranger, Ozone chooses Benjamin Wasson, who has already acted with Ozone and who in recent years has been very present in French cinematography, which he has made a forceful and effective presence in.
00:47So, Wasson is our stranger and the expedient that Ozone chooses to stage, especially the first part of the novel, is that of silence and contemplation.
01:01And we follow this man who sails through his life seemingly untouched by anything, neither by the death of his mother nor by the beginning of a love story with the beautiful Marie.
01:14When the story takes its turn, which those who have read the novel will know well, we begin to really get into the protagonist's head and hear his narrative voice.
01:27The adaptation was complicated and through the expedient of the voiceover, when we reach the turning point of the story, it gives an interesting movement, a very interesting point of view on the story.
01:43It would be too generous to say that it is a truly engaging film, despite the form, a very romantic, very literary black and white, which makes for an extremely elegant viewing experience.
01:58Once again, for this Venice 82, the competition offers us a title that is not lacking in interest, but which appears extremely cautious, especially for an author like Ozone who has always shown that he has something to say.
