Debating whether it's fair to say Tua Tagovailoa bamboozled the Miami Dolphins with his 2023 season.
Transcript
00:00And the Seahawks beat the Texans.
00:02Sam Darnold, bro.
00:02Not that he had, like, the best game ever, but another win.
00:06Seahawks are 5-2.
00:08He looks good again in another team.
00:13Not to his future.
00:15You never know.
00:16I don't – I just –
00:17You never know.
00:18We were talking yesterday if he can still throw the ball over 40 yards.
00:21Now he's going to go somewhere else and get strong as hell?
00:23Well, again, though, I think he would submit to you
00:27that everything has gone south, including the play calling, the protection.
00:34Like, I don't – I'm not so certain that he wouldn't experience
00:38some sort of resurgence somewhere.
00:40I doubt it.
00:41And his body type.
00:43You think about the guys that go – like, Sam Darnold's huge.
00:45Daniel Jones is huge.
00:48He's little.
00:49He's tiny.
00:49They're talking about Jaden Daniels now with his little body frame.
00:53He's regressing in the second year.
00:55I saw someone – I don't know if it was Barry.
00:56I think it was Barry Jackson tweeted out something along the lines today
00:59of, you know, shame on Mike McDaniel for going to bat for Tua
01:03to get this big contract, knowing that he's undersized
01:08and, like, now they're really hamstrung.
01:11I have to see what this tweet was.
01:12It was relatability.
01:14I'm fun.
01:15I thought about this.
01:16We were talking yesterday.
01:16After the show, I was going to baseball practice.
01:19Tua is a little antisocial and tiny.
01:23McDaniel's antisocial and tiny.
01:25They vibe.
01:25They vibe.
01:26They're very – like, McDaniel's is a coaching Tua.
01:31Looking for the Barry Jackson tweet.
01:36Well, I'll tell you, the World Series matchup is set between the Toronto Blue Jays
01:40and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
01:42The vibes last night in Toronto were insane.
01:46They were down 3-1, bottom of the seventh, two on, one out,
01:50and George Springer hits a three-run ding-dong that had all of Canada shaking.
01:56Rob Pozzola was there, and he was celebrating his ass off.
02:01Barry Jackson from the Miami Herald tweeted out,
02:03Dumbfounded that McDaniel, who knew Tua's limitations more than anyone – size, arm, injury, history,
02:11et cetera – pushed for the extension that has now strapped the team.
02:16Why didn't anyone in the room – Ross, Greer, McDaniel, Shore, et cetera – know that going
02:22year to year for three years instead of making him a top-five paid quarterback long-term was safer?
02:28We actually talked about that.
02:31I remember that conversation.
02:32Everybody was having that conversation because you didn't have to give him that contract.
02:36He had another year, then he could franchise him, then he could franchise him again.
02:41But that was after the big number one offense in the league year, right?
02:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:46We just led the world in offense, ran by Tua.
02:50Let's do this for another five.
02:52I can argue their side.
02:54I was on the side of double franchising.
02:55What is it going to matter?
02:56Right.
02:56Right.
02:58The thing is, I think the Dolphins not only fell victim to that season, but they needed it to work.
03:06They're looking around the league.
03:08They're looking at Justin Herbert and what he was doing.
03:10They're looking around the league.
03:11They're looking at Jalen Hurts, the fact that he was playing at a top level.
03:15They're looking around the league.
03:16Jordan Love is winning a playoff game.
03:18They needed this to work.
03:21And I think a part of Greer was, okay, no, we have this figured out.
03:25Sure, there's some injury history, but look, he stayed healthy.
03:27We've got our quarterback.
03:28It's done.
03:29It's finalized.
03:30But they got bamboozled.
03:33Well, I don't know if they got bamboozled.
03:34They made a decision that they were very close after that season, which I believe it.
03:39And I think a lot of Dolphins fans, if you went back two years, would have said the same thing.
03:44Waddle, Hill, Tua.
03:46Well, it was working.
03:49And so it was like, okay, do we go all in, which was always my argument.
03:57And that's what they did.
03:59It was wrong.
04:00I don't think they were bamboozled, though.
04:02I think they made, like, getting bamboozled is thinking that there might be a market for someone when there is no market for someone you want to lock them up, something along those lines.
04:11I think this was, we've seen enough.
04:15The path that we're on is going to deliver the results that we want.
04:19So let's not have anything out in the open.
04:22Let's not have the Christian Wilkins situation.
04:25Let's get everyone in-house because we've got a winning product here.
04:30When I say they got bamboozled, sure, Tua, his stats were indicative of that contract for that season.
04:37But when I say they got bamboozled, they did because he didn't stay healthy the following season.
04:43They got bamboozled by that one year where they were able to stay healthy.
04:47And was there a market for Tua paying him that much money around the NFL after one season?
04:53I would guess there wasn't.
04:55If he was an unrestricted free agent after that season, he would have gotten that or more.
05:02I don't think so.
05:03Coming off the 2023 season?
05:06I think there was so much concern.
05:08Have you looked at some of the quarterback contracts that have been given out?
05:11Somebody would have broke him off.
05:12Broke him off.
05:13I don't know if it would have been that much money.
05:16I'm not telling you he doesn't get paid.
05:17I think he gets the Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold type extensions.
05:21No.
05:21The questions.
05:22Because they're reclamation projects.
05:24This guy was in his rookie deal and lit it up in 2023.
05:29He was a reclamation project within his own team.
05:32Nah, I don't think so.
05:33He just had never been given a chance.
05:35Hawk, there was a narrative around Tua that before the first concussion, that he was injury prone and that he was no good.
05:42Well, that was coming out of college.
05:43You could blame that.
05:44You could blame that on Brian Flores all you want for not giving him an opportunity, not believing in him.
05:49That's another conversation.
05:50But he was a reclamation project.
05:52That's the only silver lining Mike McDaniel has.
05:55That he came to Miami, attached himself to Tua, and made him a successful quarterback for at least two seasons.
06:02But the questions, I think you're forgetting, the doubt and the questions, we did a whole offseason on, should you pay him?
06:09It wasn't, does he have the skill?
06:11It was, can he stay healthy?
06:13No, no, no.
06:14I'm not saying in retrospect.
06:16What I'm saying is, if he was an unrestricted free agent coming out of 2023, that guy would have broken the bank.
06:24Young quarterback who's putting up offensive record numbers?
06:28What, like, and had stayed healthy that entire season.
06:32Like, he checked every buyer.
06:34It was one season.
06:35But you, bamboozled.
06:36Bamboozled is me from the outside.
06:38Somebody got over on you.
06:39Like, that, that, I think that's where I might be taking issue with you saying bamboozled.
06:43Bamboozled would connote that someone knew something but sold you a false bill of goods.
06:49I think everyone believed that it was all, all good and true.
06:53They bamboozled themselves, maybe.
06:56Right.
06:56Or, you know, with missed, you know, bad evaluation.
06:59Right.
06:59You know, pulling the trigger too early.
07:01Because they could, Tua could still be on his team getting the average of the top five NFL quarterbacks.
07:06And it wouldn't be 54 next year.
07:09Yeah.
07:09If they, if they did the, the franchise thing that we talked about, he wouldn't be making 54 next year.
07:13He would be upset.
07:14Who gives a damn?
07:15He'd be making it in the 40s.
07:16Hawk is so wrong.
07:17Nobody was paying Tua.
07:18Even after that season, nobody wanted him.
07:21I mean, you're out of your mind, Texer.
07:23You are literally out of your mind.
07:25That was when Baker was making, getting 33 a year.
07:30Those reclamation progress were getting in the high 30s a year.
07:33Tua would have got 40 something from somebody.
07:35Easy.
07:35You know, Tua would have got five years, 200.
07:38We would have, Texer.
07:39Easy.
07:39I think you guys are forgetting the amount of doubt people had that Tua could stay healthy.
07:46Because even coming into last season, last season, before he got hurt again, and the Dolphins had paid Waddle, and they had paid Jalen Ramsey, and they had paid Mike McDaniel, and they had paid Tua Tungabailoa.
07:57People still didn't consider this team for real.
08:00They still thought Tua was a product of Tyreek Hill.
08:04They still pointed at the Dolphins' record against playoff teams and placed most of that blame, the lack of success against good teams, quality teams, on Tua Tungabailoa being able to execute in big game moments.
08:16I think you're forgetting, I'm not telling you that nobody would have paid him.
08:19I'm just saying, I think the Dolphins thought, if we don't pay him now, somebody else is going to come around and pay him more, and we're going to lose him, when that probably wasn't really how the tenure of the league felt about Tua Tungabailoa.
08:33100% was going to happen.
08:35They needed to see him stay healthy for at least two to three seasons and have that same production.
