Joined by Local 10 sports anchor and reporter, Will Manso, to discuss how to gauge realistic expectations for the Miami Dolphins this season.
Transcript
00:00Will Manso is on the Toyota of Hollywood Hotline.
00:04Sports anchor and reporter for WPLG Local 10 here in Miami.
00:09You see him on FanDuel Sports Network, son, for Heat Games.
00:11He'd announced some preseason exhibition games in Puerto Rico.
00:15Are you going to Puerto Rico, do you think, Will?
00:17You know, I'm not sure.
00:19I made the pitch, so now I just have to wait for my boss to say whether we're doing it or not.
00:23But trust me, it was the first thing I said when I found out they were going.
00:26Yeah, who'd you pitch it to, Local 10 or to FanDuel?
00:30Local 10, because I figured if I could get it through Local 10, I could do a combo deal.
00:34So it's perfect.
00:35It's like, you know, a little twofer.
00:36Yeah, a little double dip.
00:38Exactly.
00:38Exactly.
00:39I like that a lot.
00:40Let's talk Dolphins.
00:42So they had, and we know today, Chop Robinson was carted off.
00:45He says he's fine on Instagram.
00:47So that's good news.
00:48Crowder is there in Detroit.
00:51He witnessed the joint practice today.
00:53He said Dolphins definitely got outplayed, to put it mildly.
00:58Um, do you glean a lot from preseason and joint practices, or could the team be completely,
01:06there seems to be a little panic in the air today from Dolphins fans.
01:10And, and I don't think it's going with this early and, and, uh, with this little information,
01:16but I wonder what you feel like you can actually glean from the joint practice with Chicago,
01:21preseason game one, now one joint practice with Detroit.
01:24You know, it's one of those things where I try to, I have to get in the middle of it because
01:29if I look at it this way, I don't make a lot of it.
01:32I'm not saying that it's pointless, but I don't make a lot of it because look at the flip side.
01:36If, if Tyree could practice and Waddle was full strength, you know, they're all going
01:39and the dolphins are moving the ball around in the red zone.
01:41And they're, they're looking great against the lions, who I think we can all agree are
01:45super bowl contender.
01:46I'm not going to sit here and say, Oh my God, I think the dolphins are a super bowl
01:49contender based off that.
01:51So the flip side of that is based off them not having a good performance today from all
01:55accounts, including Channing.
01:56I don't think it's going to be one of those things where I'm going to panic.
01:58It's, Oh my God, they're going to win three games, but we know the way things are now
02:02with social media and with everybody.
02:03I mean, it's easy to panic, but I don't feel any differently than I did before.
02:07I think this is a team that has a lot of issues.
02:09It has a lot of concerns going into the season.
02:11That looks like a team that could win maybe eight, nine games, maybe not more.
02:14And certainly if things break the wrong way, be much worse than that.
02:17But today isn't going to change my mind on that.
02:20And we'll something that, uh, Hawken, we were talking about earlier with like getting
02:25tough.
02:26Is that changing your identity?
02:28Cause Hulk had a good point.
02:29Like we watched them score, you know, be one of the top offenses in the league by doing
02:33the cutesy stuff and the resets and all the motions and jet sweeps, but they want to
02:37get tough.
02:38I don't know if that's an identity change or just a personnel issue.
02:44Yeah.
02:44It's almost like what we talked about a couple of weeks ago about culture, right?
02:47Like you can say culture, you could say toughness, you could say physicality, but you got to
02:51go on the field and do it.
02:52And if the Dolphins go out and win games, I don't think, you know, Dolphins get up to
02:55a five to one star and they're scoring 28 points a game.
02:57They look like the Mike McDaniel offense.
02:58We saw early when he got here, no one is going to be saying, Oh, they got tougher.
03:02You know, it's just going to be, they got better than they're playing well.
03:05So I don't think the Dolphins identity has to be physicality or toughness, but I think in a sport
03:09that's brutal.
03:10Well, yeah, you got to be a little tough, right?
03:11I mean, you can't, you can't be a football team and not have some toughness to you.
03:15Like they're even the finesse, the quote unquote finesse teams that do things with motion and
03:19movement and speed and all that stuff have some toughness to them.
03:22So I don't think it's a flip.
03:24You could just switch.
03:25I don't think it's a person you can just bring in or an attitude.
03:28I think it's just a cumulative thing of guys just going out and executing and that'll
03:32lead to production, which then all of a sudden it makes, Oh, they're a tougher,
03:35mentally tough, better culture team.
03:37Hey, well, what, what are your expectations for this team?
03:40Two weeks now into training camp, because, you know, maybe I did get a little carried
03:44away from the reports today that the Dolphins were severely outplayed in all facets of joint
03:51practice today with Detroit, but it's the second straight joint practice that I see that the
03:55Dolphins just aren't up to snuff with the team they're going up against.
03:57And my expectations truthfully weren't very high coming in to this season anyway.
04:02So I just wonder like, what are in your, in your mind, realistic expectations for this
04:08team?
04:09You know, I would have felt like most Dolphins fans, right?
04:11You know, for the last two decades plus that have watched this team or in media covered
04:15this team, my expectations of this team are always the same eight, nine wins, you know,
04:19maybe a little better, maybe a little worse.
04:22I mean, that's the hole they've been stuck in.
04:23And when you look at what they've done this off season, the changes they've made, I've said,
04:27you know, we say it all the time, two is healthy.
04:28They're, they're a competitive team to a gets hurt.
04:30They're done, you know, and that, and that's, I think that's a pretty fair statement, right?
04:34I don't think they're terrible.
04:35If two is starting and healthy and he's got Tyreek and waddle and weapons, I don't think
04:39they're a terrible football team.
04:40The problem is I just don't think they're a very good football team either.
04:42And when I say good, I mean, to the level of the teams that can compete with the lions
04:46and be a legitimate contender and they're on the flip side of the AFC with the teams
04:50we've talked about that have talent.
04:51So my expectations are the same.
04:53I mean, my, this is a team that I think could be in that eight to 10 win
04:56pocket that that's certainly a playoff contender.
04:59If things fall, right.
05:00And if two, a misses games, like he has in the past gets hurt, things happen.
05:03It could go downhill.
05:04I think the bigger question guys is if that happens, or if this team is just mediocre
05:07middle of the pack again, what does it mean for Mike McDaniel?
05:11What does it mean for his future?
05:12He just got an extension last year at this time.
05:14Remember that right before the season last year, they, they made a commitment to him again.
05:17I don't know if he survives this.
05:19I think it's a legitimate question, whether you have to pivot from McDaniel, if things
05:24don't go the way they want it to go, it's, there are a lot of things in play, but I,
05:28my opinion of them remains the same.
05:30This is eight, nine, 10 win team.
05:31If everything goes their way.
05:33Well, what's the, what's the parameter of it going their way enough to retain him a
05:39playoff appearance, a playoff.
05:40Yes, I think you've got to make the playoffs.
05:42Yes.
05:42I look a playoff when we talk about this all the time, 25 years, right?
05:46I mean, to sit here and say that the only way Mike McDaniel comes back next year is if
05:50they win a playoff game for a team that hasn't won a playoff game in a quarter of a century.
05:54That's a really tough ask.
05:56I think they have to make the playoffs.
05:57I think they have to be a team that makes the playoffs, has a chance, is competitive
06:01in the playoffs.
06:02Obviously you want to win a game.
06:03I don't think the fine line can be though, win a playoff game or you're done.
06:06I mean, they have to look like a team and also the circumstances around making the playoffs.
06:11Do you have two available?
06:12Do you have them healthy?
06:13Those are things that I think are going to fall into place.
06:15But yeah, I think making the playoffs is a fair thing to ask a coach now, you know, a
06:19few years into his regime with a quarterback that I think we can all agree on is a very
06:23good quarterback that you could win games with.
06:26But what if, cause we know McDaniel runs the office.
06:29What if the offense is rolling?
06:30Like you said, 28, 30 points a game, but they're still losing 35 to 30.
06:35Can you put that on McDaniel?
06:37You know what I'm saying?
06:37Where if his offense gets going, but now you're going to get rid of them because the defense
06:41can't play or, you know, something like that.
06:43Is there, is there a way that they don't make the playoffs, but the offense is so good that
06:48they can keep them around?
06:49I think the only way that that would happen is if there's some sort of a collapse, like,
06:53you know, if the offense is good, I just don't see a situation where if Tua stays healthy
06:57for majority of the season, hopefully 17 games, but even, you know, 16 games, misses a game
07:01or two at most, and they, they play the way they, they can play offense and the way you're
07:06referencing, I think at least this is a 10 win team, nine, 10 win team.
07:09If the defense, look, Anthony Weaver, I have a lot of faith in him.
07:12I like this guy.
07:12I think he's got the right system.
07:14I, you know, we got the scared today with chop and hopefully he's okay.
07:16Like you referenced that he's going to be okay based on his Instagram.
07:19I love their front.
07:21We all know their secondary is a question mark.
07:23We all are wondering what that's going to be like, but if their defense falls apart and
07:26that's the issue, I still think it falls to the head coach because the head coach
07:29is just part of, you know, getting the people you bring in, bringing Anthony Weaver, bringing
07:32in the guy that hopefully could turn the defense in the end, it stops with him and you can't
07:37make excuses for coaches.
07:38You know, you have to say, you got to win, you got to produce, you got to be competitive.
07:41And there's a big year for him to show that.
07:43I'm going to tell you, Will, Amar Ross St. Brown looked like Jerry Rice today.
07:49I mean, he is a dog though.
07:50That guy's, that guy's, that guy's incredible.
07:52Will, he must've scored nine touchdowns at practice today.
07:55No exaggeration that he was killing them.
07:57I mean, look, I, I, this is one of those things too, right?
08:02Remember last year, the conversation, the offensive line and Chris Greer, the whole,
08:04you know, everybody made a big deal.
08:05Like we, you guys are more concerned than we are.
08:08I mean, I get the sense they're feeling that way.
08:10I get the secondary and I hate the thought that this time next year, we're going to be
08:13having a conversation where like, well, we told you so like, you know, we may not be
08:17the smartest in the media and fans may not know every inside detail, but I think you
08:20don't have to be a fan or in the media to know that this secondary is a huge, huge question
08:25mark.
08:25And that, that I, I've got to think opposing wide receivers like St.
08:28Brown and others are going to be salivating at the thought of going up against the dolphins.
08:32I'm getting spy reports from Clay Ferraro there at local 10, while you're doing this
08:37interview that as you were conversing with us about the dolphins, Dookie Lang just thought
08:43you were speaking to him.
08:45And so after you would say something about the dolphins, Dookie Lang would respond into
08:50the air thinking he was having a conversation with you.
08:53True or false.
08:54I mean, that happens at least 10 times a day.
08:56I mean, I'll be talking about honey, don't worry.
08:58I'll be home soon.
08:58What's that?
08:59Yeah.
08:59I'm not talking to you, honey.
09:00It's a different honey.
09:01I'm not, I'm not, you know, I don't know.
09:03That's that's David 24 hours a day.
09:06Yeah.
09:06Clay says that he, uh, first question, uh, he just, Dookie launched into his own answer
09:11to, to responding to what you said, but no one was saying local 10, welcome to local
09:1710 to take the L off.
09:18It's just local 10.
09:19How's everything going there with all the, uh, all the new sports content you guys are
09:23putting out.
09:24It's a lot, you know, it's, it's been fun.
09:26It's, it kind of rejuvenates you when you have more content and you have more time and
09:29you know, you don't have to worry about cutting time, but it's a lot.
09:31I mean, we're thankful that there's sports going on now, like the dead of summer, like,
09:36you know, or two months ago, this is going to be tough.
09:38But I mean, now we did the Saturday night show, the Sunday night show.
09:40We got colleges going.
09:41We got Casey out there reporting me and Clay.
09:43I mean, it's, it's fun.
09:45It's a lot of work, but it's fun.
09:46So, so far, so good.
09:47If, uh, if you're looking for a human interest story, Matt Mervis has been signed by the
09:52Arizona Diamondbacks organization.
09:55Listen, I'm never following any of your stories after you show.
09:58I didn't sleep last night thinking of the leather pants, David Lee Roth had on that
10:01video you sent me last night.
10:02Oh my God.
10:03Was that not crazy?
10:06I mean, Jenny, did Jenny, did you see the video?
10:08Did you see the up close video of, of a 70 year old man in tight leather pants with his
10:13everything showing in these leather pants?
10:15Oh no.
10:16And I got a bad stomach.
10:17Hawk knows I got a bad stomach.
10:18Well, he sent me the video.
10:20And I, first thing I see, I mean, it was a tight shot of him.
10:23Why is a 70 year old man?
10:25Well, why is there any man wearing pants that tight and leathery, but I mean, still 70 year
10:29old man.
10:30And I, I, you know, I'm showing it to a Crowder and Solana right now, but you know, who put
10:35it on Twitter last night?
10:37It was Joe Shad and Joe Shad was making Joe Shad was making the comment.
10:42What's worse to watch like an aging rocker who's lost his voice and doesn't look good or
10:49the aging athlete who doesn't realize that he just doesn't have it anymore.
10:54And no, the rocker, I think the rocker, you know, because an aging athlete's never going
10:57to be 70, you know what I mean?
10:59Like aging athlete might be 35, but you're not going to see a guy, you know, running routes
11:04at 72, you know, definitely the rocker.
11:07Yeah.
11:08It's, it's rough.
11:09I'll send you guys the video if you want to see it, but I don't imagine that you do.
11:13Just delete it.
11:14Just hit, just hit.
11:16No.
11:16Little man.
11:17So go back and speak with Dookie Lang.
11:19He's got things to do.
11:20Yeah.
11:20He's waiting.
11:20He's waiting for me.
11:21All right, guys.
