Local 10 anchor and reporter, Clay Ferraro, discusses his takeaways from the first few weeks of Dolphins training camp.
Transcript
00:00uh clay dolphins had joint practice i mean they had joint practice last week with the bears
00:04and then they had the preseason game against the bears now a couple joint practices
00:08under their belts against detroit um and i know it's early and what can you really glean from all
00:15this stuff but watching what you've watched and reading from the beat writers what you've read
00:21are the dolphins kind of what you thought they were going to be are they tracking less than what
00:29you thought greater than what you thought what are your takeaways well so i actually i every report
00:37i read both yesterday and today i immediately heard your voice for both positive and negative
00:43with i just think people are sleeping on the miami dolphin so every single report we got yesterday
00:49that that they were getting absolutely dominated i was like i wonder how hawks taking this today
00:55and then today i was like i'm not wavering i'm not wavering i can tell you that i'm not wavering
01:01well and and i think that to go back to your question it's they are kind of who who i anticipated
01:09they'd be you know there's going to be some ups and some downs it's it's going to be a a middle of
01:14the road team and you know you could you could talk me into them like everything going right and
01:20they end up winning nine ten games you could talk me into everything going wrong and and the wheels
01:26coming off and they win four or five the the reality is there'll be somewhere in the middle
01:30there somewhere between six and eight uh maybe nine wins and and you're talking about a team that
01:36you know is on the fringe of playoff contention most of the year and and probably falls a bit short
01:41or sneaks in at the final wild card that's who they are so no i'm not i'm not wavering either i feel the
01:48same way about this team as i did uh as i did last week and the week before that and you know
01:53much like with the heat there are some things that can happen that make you start to feel feel
01:57better about everything but we're not gonna really feel that way until the regular season starts
02:02but but clay where does that put us because here's what i'm struggling with hawk had read a
02:07tweet earlier today from omar kelly that omar was basically saying it feels like a lot of
02:13not not all dolphins fans but a lot of them on social media are almost hoping that this team
02:17loses and then you know i'm in a group chat with a bunch of my buddies who are who are just calling
02:22me you know negative and and saying that uh you know we just have to wait and see and that i'm
02:28arguing in bad faith because i don't like chris greer and mike mcdaniel and look maybe part of that is
02:33true but where does this put us where we're entering year six with chris greer or year seven i think with
02:40chris greer and year four with mike mcdaniel and they have nothing to to really show for it in terms
02:48of playoff success postseason success which i think should be the barometer um and everybody just seems
02:54to be saying that we talked to yeah you know nine wins is probably where their ceiling is like what
03:01what what do we do with that like is that just what it is there was a soft reset and they're more so
03:06looking at the future rather than right now well but i and i think that's the problem is is everybody
03:13despises being in purgatory in in sports because at least if you're at least and again this is the
03:20fan perspective i think there are a lot of people in front offices i i know for example the new
03:24orleans saints feel this way that you know there is no guarantee that if you tank that if you hit
03:28reset that you're ever going to bounce back that you're ever going to get back to where you
03:32so but fans don't feel that way fans look at it as okay well if we if we win seven or eight games
03:39again we're going to be picking middle of the first round again we won't have a chance at an elite
03:44player like top of the run uh blue gold chip type prospect in the draft again and then we're right
03:51back where it's just like mediocrity feels like a hamster wheel right and like you you keep staying
03:57in it because you keep picking in the same place whereas if you kind of rip the band-aid off and
04:04have a bad year or two then feels like you've at least got a chance to hit the reset button and i
04:08think you know they did that when they drafted tua and everybody had high hopes and and i'm sure plenty
04:14of people aren't just giving up on this build and yet you know it's kind of where they are you know
04:18they're they're still back on that hamster wheel now so i think a lot of fans are probably in that
04:22place where they'd rather hit the reset button full stop and and if that means top five pick and
04:29and you're picking one of these quarterbacks whatever it happens to be i just don't think
04:32anybody likes being in the mediocrity purgatory it just feels like the worst place to be and again
04:39going back to the heat that feels like where they've been um you know for the last couple years
04:44after making that miraculous run to the nba finals and it's just my argument is that the dolphins are not
04:50a mediocre team like i can look at the heat and say hey that's a mediocre team it's a mediocre roster
04:56and i look at the dolphins and i go that's not a mediocre team and they had a mediocre season
05:01but i i just like and maybe it's naivete but i just refuse to believe that a team with tua who can
05:09throw for 4 000 yards and tyreek who could who was who was um you know flirting with 2 000 yards receiving
05:16a team with tua and tyreek and jalen waddle and uh and mike mcdaniel who i know people are all of a
05:24sudden out on but was one of the most creative offensive coaches we've ever seen i just refuse
05:28to believe that they're mediocre well and i think this is the thing with mike mcdaniel i think he is a
05:33very creative offensive coach i think you still look at the things that that have not dramatically
05:40improved in the last couple of years and you know i say this all the time about you know the
05:45procedural penalties not getting plays in on time like how many false starts do we hear about in
05:50these joint practice like all that kind of stuff that all matters and you know i i i can i can see
05:56where you rattle off some of the names that you would think would would potentially make this this team
06:02better than average or better than better than average like but they haven't shown it and you know
06:08i don't know that they've really shown it at any point in my yes you had the 70 point game
06:13well they didn't it's for for a period of time and then league figures them out and then they don't
06:21adapt and i think that's the problem is you know you have teams that come out pretty frequently and
06:27man like they surprise people for a few games and then it's how do you adjust to the adjustment and
06:32i just i haven't seen the ability to do that so far and maybe that's mike mcdaniel maybe it's that
06:38you know teams find a way to get past the elite top of the roster players and and get after you
06:44know the the chain is the weakest link whatever it is it's just not working to the point of being
06:50better than than average or slightly above to this point and i just think until you see it after this
06:56much time to just assume that it's gonna dramatically fix itself in in your four i just it's just kind of
07:02hard to see right now clay that pass you through to dookie lang that wasn't your best attempt at
07:08throwing a football right because whatever the the opposite of a spiral is is is what came out of
07:15your right hand it was an arm punt it was like a five yard arm punt it was pretty bad what we've seen
07:23in the last uh week clay uh top sportscaster uh his throw uh mike cuño did you watch on sunday him
07:31trying to kick field goals with uh um who's it jason sanders i guess yeah jason sanders yeah i don't
07:37know what's going on with our sportscasters here in town clay yeah well it's it's the old school like
07:43uh those who can't those who can't teach yeah those who can't play sports talk about it on tv
