00:00Over 48 hours have passed since historic jewels were stolen in broad daylight from the Louvre, the world's most visited museum.
00:11Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will begin his five-year sentence in La Santé prison in Paris on Tuesday.
00:21A preliminary report into last month's deadly funicular crash in Lisbon revealed that the accident was caused by a faulty cable.
00:30Over 48 hours have passed since historic jewels were stolen in broad daylight from the Louvre, the world's most visited museum.
00:41According to art experts, it's a race against time as the first 48 hours are crucial for the recovery of the jewels.
00:48Several speculate the criminals may get caught, but the jewelry itself may never be recovered.
00:54The stolen jewels are nearly impossible to sell on the open market.
00:57Instead, the gemstones may be cut and the gold melted down.
01:01They chose this room because it was close to a window.
01:05They chose these jewels because they figured that they could break them apart, take out the settings,
01:12take out the diamonds and the sapphires and the emeralds, and take them to Israel, take them to Antwerp, India,
01:21find a dodgy dealer that's willing to recut them, and no one would ever know what they did.
01:28The heist sparked public outrage and has been criticized as a, quote, national humiliation by several French lawmakers.
01:35It also raised questions over museum security, for which officials at the Louvre had previously warned there was a lack of investment.
01:45The criticism resulted in blame games, with accusations going as far as pointing the finger at the museum's head of security,
01:52Dominique Buffin, calling her a diversity hire.
01:55But art expert Christopher Marinello says museum heists are on the rise in Europe.
02:00In France itself, at least four museums have been robbed in recent months.
02:04Nicolas Sarkozy arrived at La Santé prison in Paris on Tuesday, where he will serve a five-year sentence.
02:16He is the first former French president in living memory to be imprisoned.
02:21The judge ruled the former French leader would start his prison sentence without waiting for his appeal to be heard,
02:27citing the seriousness of the disruption to public order caused by the offense.
02:34In September, a Paris court found Sarkozy guilty of criminal conspiracy involving the use of funds from Libya to finance his 2007 presidential campaign.
02:56He is expected to be held either in solitary confinement or in a prisoner's section for vulnerable inmates, also known as the so-called VIP section.
03:05It's a first in the history of the European Union, a former head of state behind bars.
03:16Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France from 2007 to 2012, entered the La Santé prison right behind me in Paris this Tuesday morning.
03:27The 70-year-old is serving a five-year-old is serving a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy for the Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign.
03:39Sarkozy has appealed the verdict, as has the prosecutor's office.
03:45This morning, his sons called for a show of support near his family home in Paris,
03:52and hundreds of people gathered in support of the former president.
03:56Nicolas, Nicolas, Nicolas, Nicolas, Nicolas, Nicolas, Nicolas, Nicolas !
05:05Once Sarkozy is officially registered as an inmate,
05:08his lawyers will immediately request his release pending appeal.
05:13The courts will have up to two months to decide,
05:17though a ruling could come much earlier.
05:21Sofia Katsankova, reporting from Paris, for Euronews.

05:38It intends to stop reckless drivers from continuing to drive

05:58and will be accessible via smartphones.

06:05as the Bloc approved plans to allow them to obtain provisional licences,
06:09so long as they are accompanied by an experienced driver,
06:12until they turn 18.
06:13The new rules, confirmed on the EU level,
06:15are expected to come into force within three years,

06:37causing a crash that killed some 16 people last month,
06:41was not certified for use in public transport,

06:47According to a report released on Monday
06:49by Portugal's Accident Investigation Office,
06:52The cable had accumulated maintenance issues

07:05to be kept out of service for urgent modifications.

07:31that President Donald Trump can deploy

07:39from the Justice Department to hold a judge's order,
07:42which blocked the deployment,
07:44while a legal challenge to Trump's action plays out.
07:48The 2-to-1 ruling in favor of Trump
07:50by the San Francisco-based appeals court
07:53clears the way for some 200 troops
07:55to be deployed to protect federal buildings,
07:58despite objections from city and state officials
08:02who say intervention in Portland is not needed.
08:06Oregon's attorney general said he would ask
08:09a broader appeals court panel
08:11to reconsider the ruling,
08:12while the state governor, Tina Kotek,
08:15said the fight is not over.
08:18Portland is one of several other
08:20mostly Democratic-led cities

08:25as part of a crackdown on what he described as crime,
08:28including in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.

08:41a historic first that comes one day
08:44after her struggling party struck a coalition deal
08:48with a new partner.
08:49In Tuesday's parliamentary election,
08:52lawmakers in the lower house voted for Takaichi
08:54with 237 votes,
08:57more than what was needed for a simple majority.
09:00Takaichi will replace Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba,
09:04ending a three-month political vacuum and wrangling
09:08since her liberal Democratic Party's disastrous election loss
09:12in July.
09:14Ishiba, who lasted only one year in office,
09:17resigned with his cabinet earlier on Tuesday.
09:20A protégé of assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,
09:25Takaichi is expected to emulate some of his policies,
09:29including a stronger military and economy,
09:32as well as revising Japan's pacifist constitution.
09:36But she also faces a major test.
09:38Takaichi needs to quickly tackle rising prices
09:41and compile economy-boosting measures by late December
09:45to address public frustration.
