00:30And how are you with three-time Super Bowl champ Mark Schlereth.
00:32I'm Chris Myers, and it's nice to see you.
00:34Wow, Carolina coming in here, going for their third straight win for the Jets,
00:40just hoping for a win.
00:41And Mark, both of these teams run the ball well.
00:43They rank in the top five in the league in that department.
00:46The Panthers have used that to kind of pave the way for recent success.
00:50Have the Panthers turned the corner?
00:52I believe they have.
00:54When you watch their running game, it was the best running game I've watched
00:57or witnessed on tape this season.
00:59The dominant performances the last two weeks,
01:02that takes the pressure off the young quarterback
01:04and allows him to manage the game, which he has become very efficient at.
01:08Yeah, the Jets, of course, are the only winless team in the league,
01:10as many of you know.
01:11But more than half of those losses have come by just one score.
01:15The defense playing better.
01:17Still, the head coach and quarterback, Aaron Glenn,
01:19and Justin Fields have come under heavy scrutiny and criticism.
01:23Well, speaking of Justin Fields, put him in a position to have success.
01:25What does he do well?
01:27It's not drop back pass.
01:28It's getting on the edge.
01:29It's running the football.
01:31And then it's the quick game in the passing game.
01:33Get him comfortable.
01:34Get him going.
01:35And this Jets offense, all of a sudden, you could see an explosion.
01:39All right.
01:39A bright, sunshiny day.
01:40The questions are,
01:41Can the Panthers win on the road this season?
01:44And can Fields get the Jets up off the ground?
01:51We are Fox Sports.
01:57Fox Sports welcomes you to the following presentation of the National Football League.
02:08NFL on Fox from New Jersey.
02:10Let's head down to the field and welcome in Sarah Cousteau.
02:13Sarah?
02:14Chris, Rico Dowdle has had this Carolina run game cooking.
02:17And today, add the return of Chuba Hubbard after missing the last two games with a calf injury.
02:22We'll monitor how those two share the load in the backfield.
02:24For the Jets, it was a huge blow on the last drive in London.
02:28Adding to the loss was an injury to Garrett Wilson.
02:31Probably the most important piece of this New York offense.
02:34His timetable is week to week.
02:36But anticipate today more opportunities for Brees Hall in both the run and the pass.
02:42Thank you, Sarah.
02:42The effect on both offenses.
02:44Panthers won the toss.
02:45They want the ball in the second half.
02:47So, they're going to kick it off as the Jets are ready to receive.
02:53Jets have had no touchdowns on opening drives this year.
02:57And the kickoff coverage for the Carolina Panthers has been very good.
03:01The Jets have used a variety of returners and ranked second in the NFL on kickoff return yardage.
03:07Almost 29 yards per pop with Mark Slareth, Chris Myers, a couple of quarterbacks in this game.
03:12Hoping to shake off the doubters and the loyal fans that are here for the Jets.
03:17They just want a little hope.
03:18Give us something to hang on to.
03:20Maybe the first W of this season.
03:23And here we go.
03:25It bounces.
03:26Isaiah Williams is all the way up across the 40 and near the 45-yard line.
03:34A good kickoff return for the Jets to start as Justin Fields, the former Chicago Bear, a year in Pittsburgh.
03:42And he's the man on the spot here.
03:45No interceptions.
03:46A string of 218 passes without a pick, which is currently the longest in the league.
03:51But he says, hey, I got to be more aggressive in the air and I got to run the ball more.
03:56Got to drive the football down the football field and you've got to try to take a couple of shots.
04:00Get this offense going.
04:02Justin Fields is going to be the key to the New York Jets' success.
04:10And Fields to throw.
04:12And catch made.
04:14It's Josh Reynolds.
04:15Had that hip injury.
04:17Didn't play the last few weeks.
04:19A hamstring also affecting that.
04:20You heard in Sarah's report, no Garrett Wilson, their leading receiver.
04:24Offensive line struggled last week in London against the Denver Broncos.
04:29Gave up nine sacks.
04:31Arian Smith is their speed guy in for Wilson.
04:34So, see if he's the guy that lifts the top of coverage for this Jets offense.
04:39After a 30-yard return, nine-yard pickup.
04:43Reese Hall looking for the first down.
04:45Glides inside the 40 of Carolina and picks up the first down against a Panther defense.
04:51Only five sacks, but they've improved against the run.
04:54Getting up less than 100 yards per game.
04:56Yeah, and it starts with Derek Brown, number 95 up front.
05:00He is an absolute beast.
05:01The best inside interior run defender in the National Football League.
05:06He just tosses dudes out the club and makes plays on the line of scrimmage.
05:11Reese Hall, best offensive player.
05:15They hope to give him at least 18 touches as Fields gets away and gets rid of the ball.
05:22Pressure from the Carolina front.
05:26E.J. Wanham from his linebacker spot.
05:28They're going to have to figure out how to get Justin Fields outside the box, outside the line of scrimmage.
05:34You saw the blitz coming off the edge.
05:36That's what teams have been doing to them the last couple of weeks, making sure they don't let him get to the edge of the football field where he's got that run-pass option.
05:45So bringing pressure off the edge is something we'll watch Carolina do today to try to limit that bootkeep game.
05:52Maybe some more designed runs.
05:53He's one of the fastest players, not just quarterbacks, but all of football.
05:57Isaiah Davis carries.
06:00Second-year player from South Dakota State.
06:03This offensive line, we ran through it a moment ago.
06:08You got first-round picks at the two tackle spots of the veteran Josh Myers.
06:12Of course, an Ohio State guy like his quarterback and like his tight end, Jeremy Ruckert, bonding together
06:18as the ball is spotted at the 34-yard line of Carolina.
06:22Third down and five.
06:23Now, there are a lot of different options, but the QB keep game, the QB draw game, use your quarterback in a run fashion.
06:31Here we have empty, so that could be something you're looking for.
06:36Reese Hall, bottom of your screen, excellent receiver.
06:39The other way, quick pass, and tackled right away is Arian Smith, the rookie, known for his speed, couldn't get going.
06:50You get to the 28-yard line for a first down.
06:56And the offense is staying out there.
06:59I like it.
06:59You know, you talked about this on fourth down here.
07:02This offense has not scored a touchdown in an opening drive, so, hey, man, let's put it on the line.
07:08We're 0-6.
07:09Let's err on the side of being aggressive.
07:19Pass is high.
07:21Not accurate.
07:22Incomplete for Josh Reynolds and turned over on downs.
07:28Accuracy in holding the ball too long.
07:30Some of the criticisms against fields that we'll get into throughout the course of the game, but an impressive drive, and they get nothing.
07:39Panther defense takes a stand, and Carolina on offense in a moment.
07:45Jets on fourth down, fail on the Aaron throw, so they passed up a 51-yard field goal.
07:51Nick Folk has made his last 13 from beyond 50.
07:54Remember, they passed up a field goal try at the end of the loss in Denver, another one of those close losses.
08:00Panthers take over on first down.
08:02Rolling, throwing, completing two.
08:04Mitchell Evans, the rookie tight end from Notre Dame, gets near the first down.
08:09And Bryce Young, boy, his last two games, last drives at the end led to game-winning field goals.
08:15He's kind of a streaky quarterback in his brief career.
08:18Now, this is going to sound like a derogatory statement.
08:21He's a great manager of the game, and I think that's an important attribute for any quarterback.
08:27Watch him today.
08:28He'll throw a couple away, not take chances.
08:31Unselfish football by the young quarterback.
08:37Picked up 13.
08:39Run straight ahead.
08:40That's Chuba Hubbard, who's getting the start in this game after missing, you heard, Sarah, the last couple of weeks with that calf injury.
08:48And, I mean, Rico Dowdle has put up incredible numbers.
08:51We're going to see him as they rotate series.
08:53At least that's the plan for this offensive line to pave the way for those runners.
08:57Another change on the offensive line as Austin Corbett comes in and replaces what I think is a Pro Bowl player in Damian Lewis.
09:07So, we'll see exactly how that turns out.
09:09He was the starting center at the beginning of the year, now playing left guard.
09:13Lewis, a chest injury, hurting from the game, came up in the practice and injury report.
09:17Balls bobbled here.
09:18Pass, picked up and thrown for a completion right at the 40-yard line.
09:23But, alert play by Bryce Young against this Jet defense.
09:27That's Ted Aroa McMillan, the outstanding rookie.
09:30And the Jets hoping for more pressure on the quarterback.
09:33Good defensive effort, but maybe the best of the year against the Broncos last Sunday.
09:37Well, last Sunday, they just absolutely out-hit the Broncos at every position.
09:42I'm talking about DBs.
09:44I'm talking about defensive line.
09:46I'm talking about linebackers and safeties.
09:48They were exceptional in London last week.
09:51We're hitting!
09:53We're back!
09:55Young has it.
10:05We're high carries.
10:06He's fifth in the NFL in rushing through six weeks.
10:09He barely played until the last couple of weeks.
10:11When he dominated all of football, running the ball so well, scrimmage yards were outstanding.
10:16Listen, as an offensive lineman, like, I love Chuba Hubbard, and I think he's a great player.
10:21But Rico Dowdle has been the catalytic event that has made this offense all of a sudden turn it on.
10:28And if I was an offensive lineman, I'd want number five in there.
10:32That would make Chuba Hubbard the catalytic converter, and he carries down near the 30-yard line.
10:37And again, the plan is to see Dowdle in the next series and rotate throughout the game,
10:41according to head coach and play caller, offensive play caller Dave Canales.
10:45Although that could be altered.
10:46Certainly, it could be altered, but it would irritate me.
10:50I mean, the last two weeks, Rico Dowdle put up over 200 yards of total offense back-to-back weeks.
10:58And as an offensive lineman, I'm a part of that.
11:00And I want to continue that trend because it takes so much pressure off of me.
11:04Three tight ends coming.
11:08It's the Chuba Hubbard's goal so far.
11:12And Hubbard will get the first down.
11:15Now, Hubbard worth mentioning.
11:16He's fifth in Carolina history.
11:18Passed to Sean Foster on the all-time list week three.
11:21And he signed a big contract coming into this year.
11:24And he's been a reliable starter.
11:26Said he feels 110% healthy for this game.
11:29Well, they got in two tight end formations, really controlled the edge of the line of scrimmage.
11:33And then, you know, they forced Sauce Gardner out there to make a tackle.
11:37Now he's walking off the football field.
11:39So that's one way.
11:41You know, you want one of the ancillary benefits of running the football is you make defensive backs get involved.
11:47You make cornerbacks get involved.
11:49And all of a sudden, you know, when that cornerback has to make a couple of tackles, Chris,
11:53he's down there on the ground.
11:54Now he's got to take a playoff.
11:56You know what they don't do as well?
11:57They don't cover as well.
11:59So that's one of the benefits of being able to be physical and run the ball.
12:07Well, Zari A. Thomas has come in, the rookie from Florida State, covering McMillan.
12:11He's in there for Sauce Gardner on this play.
12:15See if the Panthers try to take advantage.
12:17Bryce Young looking.
12:18It's deflected.
12:19He was trying to get the ball to Chuba Hubbard.
12:21Yeah, Dan, this is just a collapse in the pocket.
12:28You collapse the pocket.
12:29Once you get penetration, you know you're not going to get there.
12:32Stop, jump, get your hands up.
12:34So you want to get in there.
12:36That's McGregor driving into that pocket when you realize, man, the play is over, right?
12:42There's got to be that internal clock in your head that says,
12:44I'm not going to get to the quarterback, and he's about ready to get rid of this thing.
12:48Let me get my hands up and affect the football.
12:50Brad McGregor, second-year player as college ball at Michigan.
12:55And there goes Jimmy Horn, Jr. from the receiver spot.
13:01Near a first down, just a little bit short inside the 20 of the Jets.
13:04Man, Moten, I love this.
13:06You're right, tackle, because he's going to come down flat,
13:09and then he's going to get out here on the block.
13:11And so many of these plays get called the legal man downfield.
13:15That's another way to make corners question whether you want to get involved.
13:19Will you put a big 330-pound tackle on a corner
13:23and say, go knock that guy around?
13:26You need two.
13:28They need two.
13:29They're going to run for it with Chuba Hubbard and into a crowd.
13:32Hubbard came in, averaging four a carry, and got the first down.
13:40Mentioned that Panthers are going for their third straight win,
13:43their fourth overall.
13:44To be .500 at this point for them is a good thing,
13:47but those wins at home, impressive, but on the road for Canales
13:51and his young quarterback, second-year Canales, third-year young.
13:55That's been an issue.
13:58Sauce Gardner has returned,
14:00and he will be at the top of your screen,
14:04lined up against McCullough.
14:06T-Mac, he likes to be called, coming off a two-touchdown game.
14:11Young dumps it off, and that is Savior Lee Getz
14:16and gets to the 10-yard line.
14:18I love the quick game, right?
14:19I love getting Young comfortable with quick game.
14:22He does such a good job of recognizing what you're in defensively,
14:26and a lot of people think that the quarterback is reading the receivers
14:30or, like, reading what their routes are.
14:32He knows the routes, right?
14:33He's got that memorized.
14:34He's actually looking at coverage,
14:36and when he sees that zone coverage,
14:38that receiver's just going to sit down, give him a big target,
14:42and that is just easy pitching catch, like stealing for the young quarterback.
14:46Go!
14:46Hubbard's looking for a hole.
14:50The Jets are going to knock him backwards.
14:52He's got nothing.
14:52He's got to have to like it.
14:53Give Jamie and Sherwood the leading tackler on this team,
14:57and third of the NFL,
14:59and the attack will spread it for getting there first.
15:01Well, this is something I haven't seen.
15:03Okay, we're going to get the right guard pulling and the left guard pulling.
15:07This is what we call a mistake.
15:09Those guys knocking each other around a little bit,
15:12and as good as they have been, and they have been great,
15:16that's the lack of continuity when a new guy comes in
15:19and fills in for your superstar left guard, Orbit.
15:23Both he and Christian can pull on that play.
15:27Hubbard as a receiver, top of your green.
15:30Third down, Young for the end zone,
15:32and two receivers in the area incompletely get.
15:36Looks like the primary target,
15:38and it's going to be fourth down and five.
15:39Brandon Stevens over there covering.
15:41We do want to apologize for any audio issues
15:44you may be having through our broadcast,
15:46depending on where and you're watching.
15:48Hang with us.
15:48We'll correct those when we can.
15:49Well, Clemens gets in late, gets a little pressure on him,
15:52but I thought he was going to throw the corner to Jalen Coker.
15:56He was coming open in the corner,
15:58and that ball's got to be placed at the very back pylon, up high.
16:02Where only a receiver can go get that thing.
16:05Errant pass, under pressure, by Young.
16:07That's the first mistake he's made today.
16:0930-yard try.
16:12And Ryan Fitzgerald, the rookie from Florida State,
16:17who is the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week,
16:20gives the Panthers a 3-0 first quarter lead.
16:29Play the Fox Super 6 NFL Challenge.

16:38Just check out the Fox Sports app for details.
16:42That was a drive of over six and a half minutes.
16:46Four out of six was Bryce Young.
16:48As the Jets ready to respond, trailing 3-0.
16:51Both teams' offenses move the football.
16:53And then the defense is tightened up.
16:57Carolina settles for three, and the Jets on a fourth down try.
17:01Failed on a pass.
17:02Thus the 3-0 score.
17:04And Isaiah Williams up off the practice squad on the return again.
17:08This time met hard around the 25-yard line.
17:12All right.
17:12So, we come back out here as the Jets offense.
17:15Tanner Ingstrand, the offensive coordinator right there.
17:18Listen, if I don't see a design QB run 11-on-11 from Justin Fields,
17:25I'm going to lose my stuff up in this box.
17:27You've got to have that because it's got to be part of what you do.
17:31And then it's about setting things up.
17:33You know, young offensive coordinators sometimes call plays.
17:36I need you to call an offense.
17:38So, set it up with your quarterback.
17:40Get him in a rhythm.
17:41Return of 19 yards across the 25, and he's in trouble, and he's going to be sacked.
17:48He looked one way, a little confusion there.
17:51Fields brought down by partially Derek Brown and then Nick Scorton.
17:55Well, watch off the edge here because he wants to basically, right here,
17:59that blitz coming off the edge eliminates your opportunity to throw the bubble screen out there
18:05because he gets in the way.
18:06Watch him.
18:06He's going to throw the bubble screen, and then he's worried about Merrick right there
18:11creating pressure on Taylor.
18:14He doesn't throw the ball, and now you're behind the chains as an offense second long.
18:19Just get some yards here.
18:20Give me five or six and make it a manageable third down.
18:28Throwing for Brees Hall who catches and steps out of bounds.
18:31And that's one thing that Brees Hall can do, man.
18:38What a dynamic player.
18:40And they'd love to get him more involved in catching the football,
18:43especially with Garrett Wilson out today.
18:45He can be that guy that moves the chains, gets you into places.
18:49Now you put yourself into a third down and manageable.
18:52He was not targeted last week.
18:54Fields told us there were a few plays to go to him, but the defense altered things.
18:58His season-high rushing came in week five, scrimmage yards against Dallas.
19:04And a dump off to Brees Hall, who's going to work his way for a first down.
19:09Boy, that's the guy you want to get the ball to, however you get it to him,
19:12if you want this jet offense moving.
19:14Well, you put the bunch formation out there with three wide receivers.
19:18You didn't have your tight end.
19:20He was sitting at the backside of that formation.
19:22All three of those guys, Arian Smith, Josh Reynolds, and also Tyler Johnson,
19:28get their blocks and create an opportunity for a first down.
19:31And now you're moving a little bit.
19:36Isaiah Davis checks in at running back.
19:41Fields has time.
19:44Goes deep.
19:45Coverage is good.
19:46And incomplete for Arian Smith.
19:49They wanted to take some deep shots.
19:54He's the guy with that blazing speed, the rookie from Georgia.
19:57We have a player injured back inside the 30.
20:01Yeah, you're just going to get this game inside here.
20:03And they have had such a tough time picking up games on the inside.
20:07And you see Smith double-covered, excellent, by both safeties deep.
20:11And, you know, there are times when it's just best to check it down and move forward.
20:17Justin Fields under duress once again.
20:19We'll check on the injured Carolina Panther in just a moment.
20:23The rookie from Ole Miss, Princely, Uman Mielin, was the injured Panther,
20:33made his way to the sideline, was brought in to help on the pass rush.
20:38And now a second down 10.
20:41Davis the back for Justin Fields.
20:43And straight ahead, up across the 42-yard line, a strong run to bring up a third down.
20:54And that's what we talk about, like, being able to defend the run.
20:57You get a lot of numbers, advantages there.
21:00But Derek Brown, just being the landlord out there on line of scrimmage, look how big he is.
21:06All right, look at the shoulders, the arms.
21:07And he plays with such, such effort, and he just tosses dudes and makes tackles.
21:14Man, he is so good inside, third down.
21:20Jets need six for a first.
21:23Mason Taylor in motion, the rookie tight end.
21:26And Fields throws into a crowd, and it's incomplete for Josh Reynolds.
21:30He had two defenders on him.
21:32And the punting unit will come out.
21:35Well, watch the quarterback's eyes.
21:37I mean, the quarterback is just going to lock into this side, the stacked side of this formation.
21:42So, both of these corners, look at all three of those players.
21:46They're just in that triangle, three over two.
21:48They're all watching, watching, watching.
21:50So, they get the break because the quarterback is just going, one, two, three, let me eyeball my receiver.
21:57And that's one of those situations that just brings the defense to the pass route.
22:01Jalen Coker, active for this game.
22:04Back to return the punt of Austin McNamara, who had a big game last week in London,
22:09averaging over 49 net yards on seven punts.
22:13And this one drops in right where you want it.
22:16So, at least the Jets' special teams holding up, trailing 3-0.
22:20And the Panthers with the football.
22:29Rico Dowdle has had a monstrous two weeks, 473 scrimmage yards, a couple of touchdowns.
22:37He's had 14 plays of 10 yards or more.
22:40He did not get the start.
22:41That was Chuba Hubbard, who's looking on as Dowdle is ready to go after a 50-yard punt.
22:54The pitch to Rico Dowdle.
22:56He's got a few blocks.
22:57And Rico Dowdle up to the 20-yard line at a first down.
23:01You know, you've been harping on his success.
23:05Look where he ranks consecutive games with 230 scrimmage yards or more.
23:11Look at that bottom row.
23:12I mean, Hall of Famers.
23:13Right.
23:14When you're in that company, that's why it didn't make any sense to me.
23:18He's the hot hand.
23:19He's been the catalytic event that has led you to back-to-back wins.
23:23He gets one carry and already busts it for a first down.
23:27Picked up 13.
23:28Doudle will pick up a couple.
23:37Let's get a game break and say hi to Carissa Thompson.
23:39Carissa?
23:40Hello, Chris.
23:40So the Eagles looking to bounce back from two straight losses, taking on the Vikings.
23:44Jalen Hurts looking, looking, going to find A.J. Brown, just his second touchdown catch of the season.
23:51Vikings added a field goal.
23:52Eagles still in the lead here, 7-3.
23:54Chris?
23:55All right.
23:55Thanks, Carissa.
23:56Keep an eye on that one.
23:57So, Mark, you don't believe that old theory of a starting player doesn't lose his job to injury?
24:02No.
24:02No.
24:03If the backup comes in and plays better than you, guess what?
24:06It becomes his job.
24:08And, listen, Doudle, you can already feel the energy that he's brought in this series.
24:12The former cowboy at a one-year deal, as young, has plenty of time.
24:17And so he will dump it off to Rico Doudle, who has a lot of room.
24:21And up across the 40, it's another first down.
24:23Yeah, Rico Doudle had a 1,000-yard rushing season as a free agent coming to Carolina and shows he can catch the ball and run as well.
24:30Yeah, he did that last week as well, getting 239 total yards.
24:34And, I mean, he scored a touchdown, catch the ball last week against the Dallas Cowboys.
24:40This is a guy that's just dynamic.
24:42And, like I said, he has been kind of the actuator of the offense.
24:46And when he's come in, the energy and the violence that he's run with, it's made everybody up front play better, especially that guy in motion right there.
24:54Tommy Tremble has been a monster on the edge.
24:57All right, the handoff to Jimmy Horn, Jr., again, from that receiver slot coming across.
25:02And, boy, Bryce Young has played, has settled in nicely.
25:05And we mentioned it.
25:05I think the Doudle and the rushing performance has really taken the stress level down on the young quarterback.
25:11Well, when you run the ball, it sets up your play action for the young quarterback.
25:16It also creates a situation where you don't have to worry about pass rush.
25:21Why? Because those dudes up front are licking their wounds.
25:25And every time you run a short pass or a quick pass, they've got to think run first, run first, run first.
25:31It allows better pass protection for Bryce Young.
25:34Young coming off a three-touchdown game.
25:39End of the quarter, they snap it right before.
25:42And straight ahead to pick up a couple.
25:44Saying on his own side of the field is Rico Doudle.
25:47A field goal is all we have so far.
25:51But the offenses are moving.
25:53Three-nothing Carolina as we head to the second quarter.
26:02Hey, let's call it the Rico Doudle effect.
26:04Watch Tommy Tremble come across in motion.
26:07I'll circle him for you right here.
26:09There he is.
26:09Now watch the effort here.
26:11Watch him.
26:12Feet, feet, feet, feet, feet, feet, feet, feet, feet, feet, feet.
26:14Drive, drive, drive, drive, drive, drive, drive, drive, drive.
26:15Throw him on the ground, get up, fight.
26:18That's what's going on as tight ends, wide receivers, everybody's been involved.
26:23Third down and one.
26:24He's already got 35 scrimmage yards on this drive alone.
26:28On third and one, he's throwing at a bad throw as the pressure pushed Bryce Young back.
26:34And he couldn't find anybody in the neighborhood of Doudle.
26:39And this is one of those things that you're going to get pressure.
26:42You're going to bring guys off the edge.
26:43You're going to bring your backers in here on third down and one.
26:47Say, hey, man to man, let's go tight coverage.
26:51And I tell you, they threw the ball right there because what do they know?
26:54They know, hey, fourth down and one, we're going for it.
26:57Number five is going to get a touch right now.
27:00Nine out of 14 when they go on fourth down this year.
27:03Three tight ends in.
27:04Big chance for the Jet defense.
27:09They stonewall.
27:10Rico Doudle will have to see if they give the surge.
27:14But it did not initially look as if he had it.
27:17How they can see in that crowd for the spot.
27:24But somehow the officials will do it.
27:28And he did not get it.
27:30Wow.
27:30I tell you what.
27:31Right on the line of scrimmage, everybody.
27:33You got Quentin Williams.
27:35You got Harrison Phillips.
27:36A couple of big bodies on there stuffing the offensive line.
27:40That's not something you see very often with this Carolina Panthers team the last couple of weeks.
27:44And that's the Jets standing up and giving their offense an opportunity with this football.
27:49And that's the Jets standard on defense.
27:53Quentin Williams, one of those guys up front in his seventh year, a defensive captain.
27:57Talked about this week with us about prior to the trip over to London, the players only meeting.
28:03Trying to create something to get that first win.
28:11Brees Hall has it with a good block to start.
28:14And Hall hit hard, but keeps going.
28:16Inside the 45 of Carolina.
28:21I love it.
28:22Right?
28:23Set yourself up.
28:25Coming back here.
28:26Fullback running across the formation.
28:29Brees Hall putting his foot in the ground.
28:32Getting north and south.
28:33Big hit.
28:33Ransom right there.
28:3422.
28:36But that's what you have to do.
28:38Now, for me, build off of that.
28:40Right?
28:41If that's the run, if that's the style you want to run with, let's build off that outside edge run.
28:47What can we build in the play action off of it?
28:49They're going right back to Hall, who's met right away.
28:53Maybe a yard or two.
28:55Turk Wharton, who is back after the last couple of weeks out with a toe and a hamstring before that.
29:02A key player up front for Carolina.
29:05Now, Chris, here's me.
29:07It's third down and one and a half.
29:08You're still upset if we haven't seen a designed run.
29:10I am.
29:10But it's third down and one, third down and one and a half.
29:13I'm telling my guys right now, hey, are you tough enough?
29:16If I'm sitting here as a Jets coordinator or the head coach of the Jets, are you guys tough enough to give me two carries in a row and pick up this first down?
29:25I'm not putting it on my quarterback.
29:27I'm putting it on my O-line and my running game.
29:30And here's a design.
29:32And Justin Fields, he slides and gets hammered and here comes the flag.
29:36Nick Scott had some problems, so there's going to be a reaction to this.
29:42Getting a little spicy down there.
29:44We have not had a penalty in this game until now.
30:00Aaron Glenn, the former Jet player, getting out there to try to calm his guys down.
30:07You can't go up, but I will say this, man.
30:10When you've got a dynamic quarterback like this, just go ahead and take a listen.
30:15Oh!
30:16Yeah, that was Nick Scott, who, as you can see, as soon as he got up, it was a smart, quick slide by Fields once he knew he had the first down.
30:25I wonder if he's okay.
30:26I think it sounded a lot worse than it actually was, and Nick Scott actually led with that shoulder, tried to keep his head out of it.
30:33Yeah, it was not a helmet-to-helmet.
30:35At least it didn't appear that way.
30:38There are two fouls on the play, both by the defense.
30:41Personal foul, number 21.
30:46Roughing the passer.
30:48Personal foul, number 22, after the play.
30:50The 15-yard penalty added on to the end of the run.
30:53It's first down, New York Jets.
30:55Roughing the passer, who was a runner.
31:02Yeah, he was a runner.
31:03I mean, it was, you know, a hit up high to the quarterback, why he was sliding.
31:07He's more defenseless.
31:10Correct.
31:11He's a defenseless player at that particular point in time.
31:15That's what Brad Rogers was emphasizing.
31:17Tyrod Taylor is going to come in and take over for Justin Fields.
31:24Taylor got his first start when Fields was injured week three at Tampa Bay.
31:35Completed 72% of his passes and had a couple of touchdowns, just under 200 yards passing.
31:4115th year for Tyrod Taylor.
31:45He certainly is a better dropback, more efficient thrower of the football than Justin Fields.
31:51But he also could run it, even at age 36, and hands it to Hall, who gets inside the 20.
32:00Yeah, Tyrod in that game against Tampa Bay was very efficient, throwing the football, ultimately put a lot of points on the board.
32:09The guy is just a consummate professional.
32:1215 years into this thing, he can orchestrate the offense, really understands it, and like I said, accurate thrower of the football.
32:20Been with a lot of teams.
32:21Remember his time with the Giants, a couple of seasons back in 2023 through that stretch.
32:28On a second down seven, we'll check on Fields after the tough hit.
32:34Brees Hall, yards are tough to come by as he falls around the 16.
32:39So, earlier on a fourth and one, they passed up a field goal try, we said 51 yards, and an incomplete pass.
32:47So, now it's only third and four.
32:49Are you thinking four down territory here with your veteran backup in there?
32:52You're 0-6 right now.
32:55I'm thinking four down territory here if I'm the New York Jets.
32:58And, remember, third down and four minus, like third down and four or less, you get some of the most favorable run looks in the NFL.
33:06You get light boxes.
33:08Might this be a run to Brees Hall to try to pick this thing up?
33:17Flag, wave.
33:18No, there is a penalty as the catch is made by Josh Reynolds on a good throw from Taylor.
33:23Flag at the 21-yard line.
33:25On the Jets' side of the field.
33:29And it came out right away.
33:30Brad Rogers, our referee, already had to sort out the hit on Justin Fields that has taken him out of the game for the moment.
33:53Illegal shift, offense, number 10 and number 85.
33:59Four players did not get set before the snap.
34:02Five-yard penalty, third down.
34:04Yeah, they're coming across into this bunch formation.
34:07You'll watch him right down here.
34:09Well, you can't see it as he runs out of the screen, but nobody is set over there in the bunch as they go one-on-one outside to Reynolds.
34:16And, I mean, those are the kind of self-inflicted wounds that happen to a team that's 0-1-6.
34:22Yeah, now you're without your starting quarterback and your best receiver, Garrett Wilson, who was inactive to start the game because of the knee injury.
34:31And a third down nine.
34:34Pressure coming.
34:34Picked up.
34:35He has a moment.
34:37And Tyrod Taylor gets out of it.
34:38Puts a move on.
34:40And back to around the 16-yard line.
34:43It's going to be fourth down.
34:46Need to get inside the 13 for a first.
34:49So, in a 3-0 game, Nick Folk will come out.
34:53And try to tie this up.
34:55Great job by Tyrod.
34:56Breaking tackles.
34:57Putting his foot in the ground.
34:58Hey, man, 15 years in.
35:00Guy still is nimble.
35:01Guy still is a viable running threat for the New York Jets.
35:06Well, Jet fans were questioning the starting quarterback.
35:11And should there be a change?
35:12Injury has prompted that.
35:14Nick Folk trying on the field goal of 34 yards.
35:19And he's got it.
35:20So, that is 90 straight made under 40 for Nick Folk.
35:25That deserves a while.
35:26And we're tied at three.
35:31Tie game here, top of the second quarter.
35:36We saw Justin Fields go off the field after a hard hit.
35:39He was checked for a concussion per week protocol.
35:43All fine.
35:43Came back to the bench.
35:44Seemed a little flustered.
35:45Is ready to go and ready to get himself back out on the field.
35:48All right.
35:48Thank you, Sarah.
35:49We'll see what Coach Aaron Glenn wants to do if he's available.
35:51If he stays with the veteran quarterback.
35:54As the veteran kicker, Nick Folk, gets ready to hoot it away.
36:00And Rico Dowdle back to return on the kick along with Trevor Etienne, the rookie, whose brother is in, plays in Jacksonville.
36:08Dowdle had done this prior to getting the opportunity to run the ball more when Chuba Hubbard was injured.
36:13And if you tuned in a little bit later into the second quarter, Hubbard got the start on the first series.
36:19And then it was Dowdle on the more recent series.
36:23So if they continue the rotation, then it would be back to Chuba Hubbard.
36:27But we'll see.
36:29Mark Schlereth, Chris Myers, thanks for being with us at a 3-3 game.
36:33Sonny in the 70s here in New Jersey.
36:35And he's going to doubt it.
36:37Hey, a little bit of history with these two teams.
36:39The Panthers, as a franchise, first win in history.
36:43Week 7, 1995 Memorial Stadium, Clemson University gets the Jets.
36:49Sam Mills with a shovel pass and takes it in for a touchdown.
36:52Vince Workman had a touchdown run.
36:54And the head coach, Dom Capers, gets the Gatorade bath.
36:57And he's currently here.
36:59The senior defensive assistant on the Panthers' coaching staff.
37:03A longtime coach from originally an assistant with the Saints.
37:06On to coaching in Houston, various roles, Pittsburgh, and a part of this Panther team
37:12as they try to get over .500 for their fourth win of the year.
37:16Hubbard is the back.
37:23From the .35 to the Hubbard with a big open hole.
37:27And he's near a first down.
37:29And got it.
37:30Well, again, we talk about, you know, getting the opportunity to get off there on the edge.
37:38Sauce Gardner making a tackle.
37:39But get away from the run defense of the inside guys.
37:44Harrison Phillips.
37:45Get away from Quinton Williams.
37:49Get to the edge and see if you can attack those corners.
37:51Get them involved in this game.
37:54Make them tackle.
37:55See if you can take advantage of something deep down the field.
37:57So, Young will dump it off to Lee Getz.
38:02And he's brought down when he crosses midfield.
38:06Andre Sisco making the play.
38:09Michael Carter in the secondary remains out with a concussion.
38:13Sauce Gardner left for a play but has come back in on that jet defense.
38:18T-Mac, Ted Aroa McMillian, is a guy that, you know, has been so good as a rookie right now in the passing game.
38:27Can you get him involved?
38:28Like to get those guys some touches early.
38:31Get some access outside against Sauce Gardner.
38:34Can you get an opportunity with this single high safety look?
38:37McMillian has one catch already on one target.
38:40Here we go.
38:43And Hubbard is brought down right away.
38:50It'll bring up a third down.
38:52Steve Wilkes, Jets defensive coordinator who was with Carolina and did an excellent job as an interim coach with this team.
39:00And we saw him use a running back tandem at the time.
39:04It was Deontay Foreman and Chuba Hubbard.
39:06Pull off some impressive wins late in the season before they failed to bring him back.
39:12And hired Frank Reich.
39:13And the coaching cycle continued.
39:15But now Canales did his second year calling the plays and running the show for owner David Tepper.
39:20All these walk-up guys right now.
39:24Man-to-man across the board.
39:26Third and four.
39:27Quick throw.
39:28Took strong hands from McMillan but knocked away by Sauce Gardner.
39:33And that's a matchup we'll keep an eye on.
39:34Two of the best at what they do.
39:36One a rookie and one settling in in his fourth year.
39:38Watch the hands of Sauce Gardner right here.
39:41Hands on him.
39:42Hands on him.
39:43Now just drive back.
39:44Get your hand in there.
39:46When you can use your hands.
39:47I always think that playing corner is a lot like playing left tackle, right?
39:52You've got to use your hands and your feet to maintain leverage.
39:56Great job stabbing him off the line of scrimmage.
39:58And then closing the gap on that throw to the outside.
40:02Another big defensive play as the flags fly here.
40:06And they don't mind backing it up.
40:08Offense.
40:09Number 55.
40:11Five-yard penalty.
40:12Still fourth down.
40:14They'll back it up.
40:14Not a problem for Sam Martin.
40:16A veteran from Appalachian State.
40:20Panthers have allowed the most punt return yards.
40:22They give up a punt return touchdown in the game against the Patriots.
40:30Another big defensive standout by that Jet defense.
40:34Isaiah Williams waving for the fair catch.
40:36And inside the Jet 15.
40:40The offense will take over after Suss and the defense did the work they needed to do.
40:52Hope you're enjoying the NFL on Fox from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
40:56And Aaron Glenn has sent Justin Fields back out there after you heard our report on the concussion process cleared that.
41:05As Taylor finished up the last drive where they settled for three.
41:08After a 40-yard punt without a return.
41:10Isaiah Davis and Kanae Wangu in the backfield.
41:19Fake Fields.
41:21The toss.
41:22Throw a little off to Isaiah Davis.
41:24The New York Jets.
41:28Justin Fields.
41:30He's just got to be better.
41:33And you look at him.
41:34Errant throws.
41:35Off target throws consistently.
41:38Then doesn't pull the trigger on that one.
41:41Takes the sack.
41:42And then here it is.
41:43Another throw.
41:44Eyeball on the receivers.
41:46Bringing everybody to the party.
41:48Got to get Justin Fields in a rhythm.
41:50Got to get him some quick throws.
41:52Easy completions.
41:56He's going to keep it.
41:57Fields.
41:59And across the 16-yard line.
42:01Well, Fields, he's in his fifth year.
42:04And this is the seventh game.
42:05And this is a hand-picked quarterback to run the Jets as they change things under Aaron Glenn.
42:10We have a flag down.
42:15And this may be.
42:16They're pointing toward the Jets.
42:18But let's check this.
42:22I saw a couple of players kind of shoving each other afterwards.
42:26After the play.
42:27Personal foul.
42:28Offense number 76.
42:30Tap the distance to the goal.
42:33It will be third down.
42:34John Simpson, the left guard.
42:38The wrestling state champion in high school called for the penalty.
42:43Well, he's down the field there a little ways.
42:44There's a designed run getting Justin Fields out.
42:48But you can see Aaron Glenn is hot right now.
42:50I mean, we already have a struggling quarterback.
42:52What we can't afford is you to make a stupid play and get us even further back here on third down.
42:58And what he was proud of with his team was one thing they had improved on was cutting back on penalties.
43:04And they have today except for that one.
43:06And it's a big one.
43:09On third and 15, Fields will run straight up the middle.
43:13And it will be fourth down.
43:16You know, Aaron Glenn said, you know, I'm not going to bench a quarterback for one bad game.
43:20But it's really not just, you know, for one game.
43:22Right.
43:22And he said, we're going to ride with Justin.
43:25He expected Fields to have a big game today.
43:28You know, it's crazy.
43:29The Jets fans here are booing.
43:30And I get it.
43:31You know, QB draw, design QB draw.
43:34You're mad.
43:34You'd like to see them push the ball down the field.
43:37You do realize that they are the worst team in football when it comes to protecting the quarterback.
43:42They do give up sacks at a record pace.
43:44They led the league coming into this game.
43:46So you've got to protect your team from that standpoint as well.
43:50Play the field position game.
43:5120, 26 sacks, and including, that includes one today.
43:57Etienne hauls that in and gets up across the 48-yard line.
44:043-3 game, but the head coach not happy with penalties and his quarterback who has been off the mark.
44:12Well, Jet fans and loyal to be here have been, I mean, it's a decade and a half.
44:24They look miserable.
44:24Hey, wake up.
44:25They look miserable.
44:26Hey, wake up.
44:26You know what, but they're here, and they just want some hope.
44:30And Aaron Glenn talks a good game like he has given them some hope coming into the year.
44:35But so far, a win will change that view.
44:42Pass is caught by Jimmy Horn, Jr.
44:46Stumbles to the turf.
44:47There is a flag down at the 46-yard line.
44:51It's a penalty-free opening quarter.
44:57And then Aaron Glenn says against Carolina.
45:04Pass interference.
45:05Offense, number 17.
45:07Ten-yard penalty from the previous spot.
45:10Free play first down.
45:11That's against Xavier Liget.
45:15That's against Xavier Liget.
45:15That's against Xavier Liget.
