00:56It means the final quarter of the season kicks off right here.
00:59And the lone star so far this weekend
01:01has been Max Verstappen.
01:02Two poles, one sprint win.
01:04What can he do?
01:05Over 56 laps, 3.4 miles per lap here this afternoon.
01:10Something of a conundrum.
01:11The last four Grand Prix this season
01:12have been won from pole position.
01:14But Max is the last pole sitter here in Austin
01:17to actually finish on the podium.
01:18And that was back in 2021.
01:21Temperatures going through the roof on the track again.
01:23And the medium favoured race tyre.
01:25Hard gives you duration, but it's slow at the start.
01:28The soft might yet be used.
01:30It's not been degrading quite as much
01:32as the teams might have thought
01:33when we first got here on Friday afternoon.
01:35And while it's peaceful and quiet
01:37in the fields around the circuit,
01:39we are jam-packed in the grandstands,
01:41waiting for the start of this race.
01:44And here's our grid today.
01:45Out in Q1 after crashing
01:47and the second Q1 exit in his career.
01:49Isaac Hadja starts last.
01:50Lance Stroll got a grid penalty,
01:52but he was out of Q1 anyway
01:53by the time that came into force.

03:04Because the driver starting second here in Austin Martin
03:06has led the opening lap
03:08in five of the last seven U.S. Grand Prix.
03:10Norris will need a better start
03:11than he had yesterday, if that's going to happen.
03:14But that's quite possible.
03:15Let's see.
03:16But Max Verstappen seems to have his starts under control.
03:19All three tyre compounds
03:20are represented on the grid.
03:22The most interesting one
03:24is Ferrari have split strategy.
03:26Leclerc on the soft compound tyre.
03:29He's an outlier in the top 15 on the grid.
03:31Then we've got soft
03:32and three drivers at the back of the grid
03:34trying hard compound tyres
03:35just to do something a little bit different
03:38and try to take advantage of a later safety car
03:42or what have you.
03:44So Leclerc, but they used soft tyres
03:47whereas Verstappen and Norris
03:49on the front row of the grid
03:50have got brand new medium compound tyres.
03:52It still might gain, Leclerc,
03:53half a car's length
03:55heading up to turn one
03:56and a bit more confidence,
03:58a bit faster tyre warm-up.
03:59So we'll watch out for him
04:01into the first few corners
04:02and the first lap.
04:03My spot in the tower
04:04has been taken by the trophy
04:06for today's race
04:07sitting all proud on its own
04:09and the one thing I did notice up there, Martin,
04:11was just how windy it is today
04:13here in Austin
04:14and how that wind has changed
04:15around 180 degrees.
04:17But in a way,
04:18I think the drivers will lie
04:19because that really grip-limited,
04:21tricky first sector,
04:23that snake,
04:23the endless S's
04:25is into a headwind
04:27and that's very good news
04:29for grip.
04:30But then when they steam down
04:32the back straight into turn 12,
04:33which is a bit of a downhill,
04:35bumpy braking zone,
04:36they'll have a tailwind,
04:37there's less air going over the car,
04:40they'll have less downforce,
04:41less grip.
04:42So, yeah,
04:43the wind can't follow
04:44the cars around the track,
04:45so they've got to make do.
04:47But I tell you what,
04:48the drivers,
04:49if they had to choose
04:49a wind direction,
04:50they would choose this one.
04:52And we're off

05:28Of other drivers
05:29complaining
05:29about the section
05:31from turn 12
05:32all the way

05:34because you've got
05:34a tailwind
05:35including the final corner,
05:37the newly named
05:37Andretti corner.
05:39So that is where
05:40in terms of tyre degradation,
05:42the rear tyres
05:43are going to be
05:43really struggling.
05:44Something to watch out for.

05:45if you fly your aerodynamic
05:47wings into a headwind,
05:48you've got more air
05:49going off over the car.
05:50If you've got a tailwind,
05:51you've got less air
05:52and they use that air
05:53to press the cars
05:54into the racetrack.
05:55So that is the difference.
05:57What really gets them
05:58is if the wind
05:59is gusting
05:59and it's a crosswind
06:01in a critical corner.
06:03It's a fascinating race
06:04this afternoon.
