00:00...is going to mean a big points payday because Russell only sixth and Antonelli out of the points.
00:06Just as I was saying, Ted, there'll be four points between them by the end of this race.
00:10Constructors' Champions, as I said, McLaren, their CEO is Zac Brown.
00:14Zac, thanks for joining us. This race could have been so different. It isn't.
00:19It looks like Lando is going to have to put up with third place here.
00:23What are the state of his tyres that you're hearing?
00:25Yeah, not great. I think had we got past Leclerc earlier on, maybe we would have given Max a race.
00:34But we did it just so we haven't. So all we can try and do now is get in front of the Leclerc.
00:40Okay, mate, I understand. They can't go through it now, but the pace is really strong.
00:44We'll have to calm everything down and look forward to Mexico.
00:49Yeah, 100%. Dust ourselves off from a less than stellar weekend and go again in Mexico.
00:54Just a thought as well, Zac, about your pit stops and the second pit stop again that was a little slower than the first.
01:02Is there a problem with the hardware that's causing this?
01:06Obviously, I saw the slow stop, but we'll look at what happened post-race.
01:11So I wouldn't want to guess as to what the issue was there.
01:14Thanks, Zac. Glad to have your company this weekend.
01:21That 46 of 56, as it stands, Martin, in the top 10.
01:27I'd be a little bit surprised if we see any movement between now and the end, except maybe in the battle for 10th place.
01:34Yes. Possibly, yeah.
01:37Mercedes have... George Russell now half a minute off the lead, so they really...
01:42They look pretty good, didn't they, in the sprint yesterday.
01:45Russell even having a bit of a risky move to take the lead, but they've not really been at the races today in full race trim for the full distance,
01:55have Mercedes-Benz, unfortunately, and that's a surprise.
02:00The cars, we talked to Ferrari this morning, like, why were you struggling Friday?
02:04Suddenly you look good in the race.
02:06They said that these cars are so knife-edged to get right, and two or three degrees of track surface temperature
02:13or a bit of a change of wind strength or direction energizes or destroys the balance of the car.
02:19And I think that's what we've seen season-long, isn't it, where it's so hard to predict who's going to be on it.
02:25But Max at the moment.
02:27Yeah, quite. We're watching Isaac Hadjar in 17th place as he closes on Pierre Gasly.
02:33I'd quite like to see as well what's going on behind Oli Behrman.
02:37Alonso Lawson-Stroll are getting quite close together, and I think that is going to go on right to the finish.
02:44Nico Hülkenberg started 11th, running in the points now in 8th.
02:48Behrman is not far behind him, and he was another two-tenths faster on the previous lap.
02:55And 6.6 seconds, the difference between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
03:03Leclerc on the mediums, playing a waiting game and wondering when they can go and get Max Verstappen.
03:13And if they can go and get Max Verstappen.
03:16Now we are on board with Lance Stroll.
03:18Because this is the closest battle on the track apart from Isaac Hadjar for 16th as he goes down the inside on Pierre Gasly.
03:25And Gasly just holds on to that one.
03:27And look at this.
03:31Just four-tenths of a second last lap.
03:34Lando Norris was faster than Charles Leclerc.
03:38Because I wonder, has Lando Norris been told when the carcass cools down a bit on the tyre,
03:43you might be able to go and get Charles Leclerc.
03:45And on the last lap, four-tenths, and on this lap, 47, half a second between Charles Leclerc and Norris.
03:55In Norris' favour.
03:56He's coming back at him, you know, Martin.
03:57Yes.
03:58He is.
04:00And they're both just, well, they're certainly keeping Max Verstappen honest out front.
04:04But I think Max is just biding his time, isn't he?
04:07With a seven-second lead in his pocket.
04:11This looks so mundane, this race, but things are changing a little bit.
04:14Ocon and Antonelli having something of a scrap.
04:17Hadjar and Gasly still having something of a scrap.
04:20And there's Alonso, and there's Lawson, and there's Lance Stroll.
04:24And this is a three-way battle for the one remaining points place there.
04:28Lawson is out of that magic one seconds.
04:32Stroll has got DRS to keep him in touch.
04:35And I wonder if Fernando Alonso is just keeping Lawson at arm's range here a little bit
04:40to allow his teammate to get that much closer to the racing balls.
04:44Here comes Kimi Antonelli down the inside on Esteban Ocon.
04:47That was a replay.
04:48Did Antonelli go over the white line?
04:50I don't think he did from that angle.
04:52Remember, he's one of many that are on their final warning for exceeding track limits.
04:56So here's the gap then down to 1.4 now for Lando Norris.
05:00And we'll see if Leclerc's got any speed left as well.
05:04And this is it.
05:05This is the final hurrah, isn't it, for Norris.
05:08His final chance to grab those extra three points
05:11because Verstappen is coming at the pair of the McLaren drivers.
05:16But you have to also say, Norris is coming back at Piastri as well today.
05:20Yeah, this is a great scrap between Gasly and Hadjar as well.
05:24Driver of the Day vote closes in six laps.
05:27Take your choice on that.
05:29Lando Norris at this rate is very soon going to be in DRS range.
05:33The man who leads the Salesforce Driver of the Day vote, Charles Leclerc.
05:38And deservedly, I think, leads that too.
05:40Ted, down to you.
05:42I'll tell you something else that's going to happen towards the end of this race.
05:44Russell might catch Piastri.
05:46He's just broken the three-second gap, has Russell, to Piastri.
05:50He's on three-lap younger tyres, according to my notes.
05:55And he's going to give it a go.
05:57Russell in the Mercedes P6 is closing on Piastri.
06:01Piastri's day can't get worse, can it?
06:03Not as much as Norris is closing on Leclerc, though.
06:08Down, he's not quite in DRS at the detection point, it seems.
06:13But he's really coming at him now.
06:15He needs everything working for him.
06:17And to arrive on the scene, get the overtake done quickly.
06:20So, a fully charged battery to attack for a lap.
06:23Get a move done.
06:25Maybe down that back straight, before his tyres overheat once again.
06:30Because he's dropped back, let that tyre cool down,
06:33and gone through that graining stage that you were talking about, Lando Norris.
06:38Now, he is going to be within DRS range, through that next detection zone.
06:44Right there, you saw the white line across the track.
06:47And he'll get DRS along the main straights.
06:51And that's going to really help him.
06:53Although he's still sliding out of Andretti.
06:54That final corner.
06:56He was, but he knows he's got to stay within track limits.
06:58Otherwise, he's a dozen seconds ahead of Hamilton.
07:02So, he won't lose third place.
07:05And it's worth an attack, even if he gets to track limits five seconds now.
07:09For Lando Norris, it's worth, as long as he doesn't lose a wheel or some body work,
07:14it's worth him having a go for those extra three World Championship points.
07:18Yeah, 1.6 seconds then, the gain over the last six laps for Lando Norris.
07:22It's been another patient moment and a bit of coaching.
07:26A bit of help from the pit wall as well.
07:27Don't give up here.
07:28There might still be a chance.
07:30Yeah, you feel Charles Leclerc should be on the better tyre.
07:33He's got a lot of battery remaining here because he's not deployed a lot.
07:38Norris is really going for it with 60% remaining.
07:42And he'll be using that with what's left of that 60% down this back straight.
07:48DRS then done too far behind on this occasion.
07:55And also, by now, Leclerc knows all the tricks that Norris has got in that.
08:02But the different tyres now, and you see the Ferrari moving about under acceleration,
08:07but so is the McLaren we're on board now.
08:09And they're so slow in those corners, isn't it, when the tyres are going away.
08:14This is a brilliant section through here.
08:17Rips your head off your shoulders with the G-loadings.
08:25Right on the white line for Lando Norris out of turn 19.
08:30That looked a bit slidey from Charles Leclerc that time around.
08:33Leclerc just starting to miss a little bit of traction.
08:37And that will give Norris all the confidence.
08:40He's gone down the inside on Charles Leclerc.
08:43I thought it might happen, Martin.
08:44Charles Leclerc saw that coming.
08:46Felt that the switchback was the right way to defend.
08:50But that's the first time we've seen Lando have a go at Charles Leclerc.
08:53Down at turn 1, or up at turn 1, as we should say.
08:57Yeah.
08:58So Norris got in there so hot, he was always going to struggle to make the apex.
09:01And Leclerc telegraphed it.
09:04He saw it coming, didn't he?
09:06And drove beautifully.
09:08He just had enough.
09:10And he saw that little squirmy, slidey exit from Charles Leclerc to have a go.
09:15And he is so close now.
09:16Coming out of turn 11 to pick up the slipstream, to use the battery, to use the DRS,
09:23and to try and get alongside down this backstrain,
09:25where he has got past Charles Leclerc.
09:27He wants in this race to take second place, and is now trying to do it to make it count to the chequered flag.
09:33Norris down the inside, and he takes that second place, away from the struggling Ferrari.
09:38It's taken him a while.
09:40He'd almost given up mentally.
09:42He was told by the pit wall, just hang on in there.
09:44Chances will come your way.
09:46They have.
09:47It's Verstappen from Norris once more.
09:49He cooled his tyres, but I think also the Ferrari started to lose its rear tyres a bit.
09:54Once again now, Norris needs some perfect corners to finish this lap and start the next lap.
10:00Otherwise, the Ferrari will be in his DRS zone, and it looks pretty quick in a straight line.
10:06So, super neat and clean then.
10:08But that was very aggressive.
10:11Keep the pressure on.
10:14He has three strikes.
10:16Indeed.
10:17So, what Lander was clever there doing was he tried a new...
10:21He tried something new, didn't he?
10:23He didn't go down the outside for the first time.
10:25He flicked to the inside.
10:27On all the rubbish on the inside of the racetrack, this was the inter-turn one.
10:32But you're always going to run a little bit wide if you take that line on the way in.
10:37And, as always, the front runners, and this is the overtake.
10:41Look at that.
10:41It was a little dummy.
10:43And look how dirty his tyres are, or picking up the rubbish.
10:47But he'll struggle a little bit for a few corners with dirty tyres like that.
10:51But look how much gap he's managed to make in the first sector.
10:56And that is going to give him a nice comfort zone down the back straight.
11:00Job done for Lando Norris.
11:02And that's what it does in the Drivers' Championship as well.
11:053-4-6 for Piastri.
11:073-3-2 for Norris.
11:0914 points.
11:10The difference, it'll go down well on a glorious Sunday evening in Glastonbury.
11:16It will probably add to the Monday morning gloom if you're watching in Melbourne.
11:21Long, long way to go.
11:23And the two drivers at McLaren will be separated by 14 points.
11:27At the end of this race in the Championship, in this glorious fight to the finish in Abu Dhabi.
11:34Meanwhile, Isaac Hadjar has been trying to make some moves on Pierre Gasly for quite some time.
11:42And he has got past Pierre Gasly in 16th place.
11:46Down the back straight, we can see what happened here when he came up against the Alpine.
11:52Easy pass.
11:52It's been great teamwork between Will Joseph, the engineer of Lando Norris.
11:57He really sort of, like, come on, come on, do this and do that.
12:00I think we can still come back at him.
12:02And he has been able to do that.
12:05Piastri holding Russell off pretty comfortably as well.
12:08Yeah, when Ted was talking about it a few laps ago, the threat was kind of there from Russell.
12:15That's just faded away now.
12:18So Piastri's just running a lonely race in fifth, picking up points here for Oscar Piastri.
12:24But his recent race results, well, fourth place, of course, in Singapore.
12:28didn't finish in Azerbaijan, got the podium in Italy.
12:31Last win, Dutch Grand Prix in the Netherlands.
12:35So consistent through the opening 16 races of this season.
12:40And whilst the points all has been still pretty good for Piastri,
12:44those around him have been better.
12:47And Verstappen is very much on course for a, what, a fourth race in a row
12:51where he out-qualifies and outscores both McLaren drivers.
12:57Absolutely, and of course winning the sprint as well yesterday.
13:04And what a weekend it has been then for Max Verstappen.
13:09There he is, out in front.
13:11He's got cars ahead of him.
13:13He's barely had anything ahead of him all race long.
13:16Those cars are backmarkers.
13:17Yes, Bortoletto, his good friend.
13:20And Colopinto and Gasly.
13:23That's down the inside.
13:24Colopinto having a look at Pierre Gasly.
13:26Struggling a bit on his tyres.
13:28Well, Bortoletto will race this to the end too.
13:31We'll see how that goes with Verstappen waiting to lap them.
13:35Yeah, they haven't been giving any blue flag warnings yet.
13:38Until Max is within three seconds of them,
13:40they won't start getting notifications up.
13:43Then when Max is within 1.2, the blue flags come out
13:46and they have to scamper out of the way.
13:49He doesn't actually have to overtake them, I don't think.
13:51He doesn't want to, but I think he will want to
13:56and get ahead of them and keep that buffer.
13:59You never know what's going to happen
14:00with a last-minute safety car or something, do you?
14:03Correct.
14:03That battle for the final points placing,
14:06I think he's going to Fernando Alonso.
14:08Lawson's dropped back.
14:09Stroll has dropped back from Lawson too.
14:11Oli Behrmann in ninth place.
14:14Could have been seventh.
14:15Was making a move on Yuki Tsunoda.
14:17And Tsunoda just jinked a bit to the left-hand side.
14:20Behrmann had to take to the dirt.
14:22Both cars are managing here,
14:23so we should need to hold positions, please.
14:25Hold what?
14:26Hold positions?
14:28Wait, he's slow.
14:29Of course, he's managing Franco.
14:33The trouble is, he's slow
14:34and he's forcing you into the path of Gabriel Bortoleto.
14:38So I absolutely see why you would want
14:40to get past your teammate.
14:42Yeah, Behrmann in ninth, Tsunoda in seventh.
14:45Hülkenberg got ahead of Behrmann
14:46after he went onto the dirt,
14:48got a load of dust on his tyres.
14:49Bortoleto then has just had his first warning blue flag
14:53to let the leader through.
14:54He'll need to do that in the pit straight
14:56and into Yield and let Max go
14:59up the inside.
15:00It's always great peril for the leader coming through
15:02when cars are squabbling like this.
15:03He's going for it.
15:03He's not holding positions.
15:05There we go.
15:05And they come very, very close together
15:08at the top of the hill.
15:09Gasly goes wide.
15:10He's forced out wide by Colin Pinto,
15:13who does make the move and get the place,
15:16despite being told to hold positions.
15:18He's up to 17th.
15:19Yeah, well, it's a scrap over 17th and 18th, isn't it?
15:25But, so, a long way back,
15:28but I think you'd do that, wouldn't you?
15:30You'd do the move
15:31and then you'd worry about the briefing later.
15:33Yeah.
15:34And he is.
15:35Well, he's still racing, of course,
15:37for a future next season at the team,
15:39Franco Colin Pinto.
15:40And he says the team are just saying,
15:41keep doing what you're doing.
15:42And whilst they would like to be
15:44a lot higher up the grid, I'm sure,
15:47he's got the fight in him.
15:48He's got the spirit in him.
15:49And we know that he can make overtakes.
15:53We've seen it before.
15:54Colin Pinto's really struggling.
15:57He's fighting for his career, isn't he?
15:59So, I don't blame him.
16:01Absolutely.
16:02Gasly is now lapped.
16:03Portoleto is lapped.
16:05And sometime tonight,
16:07Max Verstappen might celebrate
16:09and get a little bit tipsy.
16:10Who knows?
16:10But Shibuzzi is there,
16:12waiting to wave the chequered flag
16:14and a whole new bar song for him.
16:17And I could do a few more Shibuzzi gags if you want,
16:19but it's a long walk home,
16:21so I won't.
16:22I was having to talk to him on the grid,
16:24but I didn't find him.
16:26It's a shame.
16:26He's great.
16:28Love his music.
16:29Verstappen from Norris.
16:307.2 seconds.
16:33And that gap's come down a bit more
16:35because Verstappen's been lapping people.
16:37Charles Leclerc is on for a first podium
16:39for Ferrari in five races.
16:42As we start the final lap here,
16:44behind Max Verstappen,
16:47Gabriel Bortoleto getting very close
16:49to Pierre Gasly.
16:51He tries to get past him,
16:53accelerating down the hill.
16:54Gasly's really struggling.
16:56It might look like Bortoleto could get that one.
16:58For Max Verstappen,
16:59who came into this weekend, Martin,
17:01alongside Lewis Hamilton with a dream.
17:03A dream of becoming the first driver
17:05to win seven Formula One Grand Prix
17:07in the United States of America.
17:10That dream is about to come true.
17:12I think you're absolutely right.
17:13No commentator's curse,
17:15but he has been serene all afternoon
17:19and he looks every bit as serene right now
17:23as he heads for home
17:24from the far end of the racetrack
17:26and the hairpin of Turn 11.
17:27In Hungary, six races ago,
17:29Max Verstappen was a minute and 12 seconds
17:32behind the race winner.
17:34Since then, second in Holland,
17:36first in Italy,
17:38first in Baku,
17:39second in Singapore
17:40and about to go back to the top step
17:43of the podium here.
17:44He's had what?
17:45A win in Las Vegas.
17:47He has had two wins in Miami.
17:50At the start of this weekend,
17:52he had a sprint weekend,
17:53a sprint win here
17:54for the third year running in Austin.
17:57And he's come to this track
17:59where he's won three times before
18:01and he's about to make it
18:02a fourth Grand Prix win in Austin
18:06for a seventh win in the United States.
18:09While that's happening,
18:11Hamilton's struggling,
18:12Piastri's gaining.
18:13Verstappen crosses the line,
18:15wins the US Grand Prix.
18:17And it has been max attack
18:20and max success
18:21all weekend long for him.
18:24Lando Norris finishes second.
18:25Charles Leclerc will be third.
18:27Can Lewis Hamilton
18:28hang on to fourth place?
18:30He thinks he's got a puncture.
18:31Piastri is gaining on him.
18:33We're on board now
18:34as Charles Leclerc finishes third
18:36and picks up that podium.
18:37Look how wide Hamilton went
18:39around the final corner.
18:41He is going to get to the line in front
18:43because the line comes at you quickly.
18:45Hamilton holds on to fourth.
18:47Oscar Piastri finishes fifth.
18:49George Russell sixth.
18:51Yuki Tsunoda will come home seventh.
18:55And the fight is going on
18:56for the final point scoring place
18:58with Nico Hülkenberg taking eighth
19:01and Oli Behrman ninth.
19:02Alonso and Lawson and Stroll
19:05tenth, eleventh and twelfth.
19:07Antonelli just to the back of this pack.
19:10And that was a bit harem-scarum
19:12for Lewis Hamilton at the end
19:14who put in a lap of a 1.43.1
19:16on the final lap.
19:17Piastri did a 1.39.0.
19:20Yeah, he came on the radio to say
19:21he thought he had a front right puncture.
19:24So, lucky to get over the line.
19:26Here comes Kimi Antonelli.
19:28Unlucky for him, wasn't he?
19:30Got in that collision with Carlos Sainz.
19:31Yeah.
19:32And really nothing Antonelli
19:33could have done there.
19:34So, he ends up outside the points in 13th.
19:37Could have been a much better day
19:39I think for Behrman
19:40but still two precious points.
19:42What a weekend.
19:43He's missed out on the fastest lap here.
19:45So, he doesn't do the double Grand Chalem
19:48as it were
19:49in the sprints and the Grand Prix
19:51which no driver's ever done
19:52but it was all Max.
19:53Yeah, another very impressive weekend Max.
19:55Extremely well done.
19:58Enjoy the celebrations.
19:59I'll see you next year.
20:01Yeah, well done mate.
20:02Unbelievable weekend.
20:04Really, really good.
20:06Thank you very much everyone.
20:08And yeah, we can fly back mate.
20:12Well done Max.
20:13That was proper domination.
20:14What to say.
20:16You got everything this weekend.
20:18Yeah, really happy with that.
20:21Let's try to keep this momentum up.
20:24And that momentum, Karun
20:25has seen Max Verstappen
20:27take
20:28where is it?
20:30I've just written it down.
20:31119 points
20:33out of a possible 133
20:35in the last five Grand Prix weekends.
20:38It feels a bit like 2023 this, doesn't it?
20:41This level of Max Verstappen
20:43and I think you used the word Jaws.
20:45He's coming.
20:46You know, it's only 40 points now
20:48behind Oscar Piastri
20:49and
20:50you know, behind Lando
20:52it's only 26.
20:53I didn't use Jaws.
20:54I used T-Rex.
20:55This is T-Rex.
20:56Oh, right.
20:56It's even bigger the Jaws.
20:58This ain't Shark.
20:58This is happening on the land.
21:00This is T-Rex.
21:01And yes, I know
21:02there were three people
21:02in the Jeep
21:03in Jurassic Park.
21:04Thanks for everyone
21:04who pointed that one out to me.
21:06But the analogy
21:06still holds true.
21:08Well done to Ferrari.
21:09Great strategy today
21:10from them
21:11and Charles Leclerc.
21:12And P3.
21:14Well done.
21:15Nice drive.
21:16Yeah, good job.
21:17Good recovery this weekend.
21:20Yeah, it's good to be back
21:22on the phone, yeah.
21:23And I think we worked
21:24really well this weekend.
21:25So, good job.
21:27Don't worry, Charles.
21:28Win-win.
21:30Yeah, I think actually
21:31that's the bigger point
21:33is how they recovered
21:34the weekend
21:34because strategically
21:35in the end
21:36he started third
21:37and finished third, right?
21:37You know, it gave him
21:39a better track position
21:40for a while
21:40but it didn't work out
21:41on the whole.
21:42More impressively
21:43for me
21:43is they looked
21:44nowhere on Friday
21:46and he's recovered
21:47it to the podium.
21:48His sixth podium
21:50of the season
21:50and that's great.
21:52And third and fourth
21:52for the team as well.
21:54George Russell
21:54wasn't on the pace.
21:56Oscar Piastri
21:56wasn't really on the pace.
21:58He actually finished
21:58a second behind
22:00Lewis Hamilton
22:00because of Hamilton's
22:01problems in the ends.
22:04Sonona making
22:04it a double point
22:05scoring finish
22:06for Red Bull 2.
22:08But there is
22:09your winner
22:10for
22:11the
22:1268th time
22:13in his career.
22:15Max Verstappen
22:16stands on top
22:19here in Austin
22:21and ties
22:22Sebastian Vettel
22:23for third
22:24on the all-time table
22:25of career podium finishes.
22:27That is
22:27122nd podium
22:29as he dives,
22:33stage dives
22:34into the arms
22:35of his waiting crew.
22:36He's back, isn't he?
22:38He's absolutely back
22:40and Red Bull are back
22:42more importantly
22:43because to me
22:44the fact
22:44it's not so much
22:45that Max has won
22:46the fact that we've seen
22:47Yuki Tsunoda
22:48finish in 7th place.
22:49You know,
22:49we haven't seen
22:50that second Red Bull
22:51consistently in the points.
22:53The fact Tsunoda
22:54finished in 7th
22:55underlines
22:56that the whole
22:57Red Bull package
22:57is better.
22:59The fact that he's
22:5952 seconds behind Max
23:01underlines that
23:02Max Verstappen
23:03is still
23:03the top dog.
23:05So Max Verstappen's back.
23:07Can I ask a question?
23:08Yes.
23:08Where's Martin Brundle gone?
23:10He's gone to do
23:10the interviews
23:11at the podium.
23:11Did you not know this?
23:12I had absolutely no idea.
23:13Good, neither did I
23:14when he threw his headset
23:15at me and said
23:16I've got to go to the podium
23:17and here I am.
23:19Last scene running
23:20out of the commentary box
23:21about two minutes ago
23:22I thought he was off
23:23to see Shibuzi.
23:25He's like
23:25I wanted to talk to him
23:26on the grid.
23:27Yeah, no, he's a fan too.
23:28I want to talk to him
23:29on the grid
23:29and he saw him
23:30with a cheque of flag
23:30and right,
23:31he's off to see Shibuzi there
23:33where he's gone.
23:33There he is.
23:34He's standing somewhere
23:34at the back there.
23:35We'll see him in a second.
23:36Ever the professional.
23:37Love it.
23:39Oh, what a finish
23:40this could be
23:41to this season.
23:44You think Mexico
23:45you know,
23:46completely different track
23:47once again,
23:48high altitude
23:49so effects on the engines
23:51and reliability
23:51will come into it
23:52at this stage
23:53of the season too.
23:54How good
23:55have Red Bull
23:56been in Mexico
23:57over the years?
23:57You know,
23:57think about those years
23:58where Mercedes
23:59were dominating,
24:00winning everything.
24:01Max was strong
24:02at Mexico.
24:03I think that's
24:04one to watch out for
24:06when we get there.
24:07I mean,
24:07obviously last year
24:08Ferrari won
24:08with Carlos Sainz.
24:11Let's see.
24:12I'm very,
24:13very intrigued
24:14to see
24:15whether this
24:16Red Bull
24:17and Max recovery
24:19this weekend
24:20has cemented it
24:21for me,
24:21we've had three
24:22unusual tracks,
24:24two low downforce tracks,
24:25one street circuit,
24:26maybe,
24:27maybe,
24:27maybe.
24:28This is a normal track
24:29with a whole range
24:30of corners
24:31and they're fast.
24:33We'll discuss this
24:33on the podcast.
24:35There might come a time,
24:36you know,
24:36with this Red Bull revival
24:37where a McLaren team
24:40that says their drivers
24:40are free to race
24:41might have to make
24:42a decision
24:42and say,
24:43we've got a championship
24:44leader
24:44and we've got a challenger
24:45and we actually
24:46would like to win
24:47the driver's championship
24:48and to preserve that
24:49we might need
24:50to be
24:51a one-driver team here.
24:53Yeah,
24:53but which driver?
24:54It's a question to ask.
24:55Well,
24:55the one that's out in front,
24:56surely.
24:57But the one that's out in front
24:58has finished
24:59today 22 seconds
25:01behind the other car.
25:02I know,
25:03but I'm asking the question.
25:04You read out a stat recently,
25:06he's not scored a podium
25:07in a few weekends now.
25:08Since Zandvoort.
25:09So do you back,
25:10my point is,
25:11do you back the informed driver
25:12or do you back
25:14the one that's got
25:14the points in the bag?
25:15I think you back neither.
25:16I think you have to
25:17let them fight.
25:18You can't.
25:18I think you probably do
25:19at this stage,
25:20but that might then
25:21be to the detriment
25:22of a driver's championship win
25:24because at the moment,
25:26neither driver's capable
25:27of stopping
25:28the man that's in form
25:30and doing all the winning.
25:30Yeah,
25:31I said you back neither driver.
25:32The answer is actually
25:32you back both drivers.
25:35But you back neither
25:36over the other.
25:36Yes,
25:36that's what I meant.
25:38We'll discuss this more
25:39on the podcast tomorrow.
25:41Sold out here at Austin.
25:43It has been a fabulous weekend
25:45in the sunshine.
25:47And there he is,
25:48Martin Brundle,
25:49down in Parc Fermet,
25:50waiting to interview
25:51the top three.
25:53Charles Leclerc for Ferrari,
25:55Lando Norris for McLaren,
25:56and first up,
25:57Max Verstappen for Red Bull.
25:59Congratulations, Max.
26:01Your 68th victory
26:02in Formula One.
26:03Your fourth here.
26:04Pole position,
26:05perfect start,
26:06controlled the race.
26:07That was a champion's drive.
26:09Yeah,
26:09it was an unbelievable weekend
26:11for us.
26:12I knew that the race
26:13was of course not going to be
26:14super straightforward.
26:16I think if you look at
26:17the whole race,
26:17the pace between myself
26:19and Lando was really close.
26:22I think just in that first stint,
26:23that's where we made the difference.
26:25I could eke out
26:26a little bit of a gap,
26:27and that's basically
26:28what we kept till the end.
26:30It wasn't easy to manage
26:32also the tires
26:33on both of the stints,
26:34but we kept it in the lead
26:37and just incredibly proud
26:38of everyone
26:39to deliver a weekend like this.
26:41Okay,
26:41we'll have a quick word here.
26:42Well,
26:42I'll come back to you
26:43if I may.
26:44Lando,
26:46P2,
26:46you two had
26:47a brilliant fight.
26:49I'd love to hear
26:50what you've got to say
26:50to each other about it,
26:51but you finally made it through
26:53to get second
26:55and keep hold of it.
26:57Finally,
26:58finally.
26:58It took long enough.
27:00It was a good battle
27:01with Charles.
27:02He fought hard
27:02and it was tough.
27:04It was tough.
27:06We did everything we could.
27:07I thought we kind of
27:08had it in an easier way
27:09after we got ahead
27:10and then we did the overcut
27:11or we went much longer.
27:14I expected a slightly easier
27:16second attempt
27:16to get through,
27:18but it wasn't the case.
27:19So,
27:19no,
27:20Charles drove a very good race.
27:22It was good fun.
27:23Good battles.
27:25So,
27:25I have to take second.
27:26Not a lot more
27:26we could have done today.
27:27We heard Will Joseph,
27:28your engineer,
27:29saying like,
27:29cool your tires a bit
27:30and then have another go
27:31when that appears
27:32to be what you did.
27:33Yeah,
27:34I mean,
27:34like,
27:35you know,
27:35out the box
27:36when the tires
27:36are the freshest,
27:37then you want to push
27:39because you have
27:39the best chance,
27:40but it's also
27:41when the tires
27:41get the hottest.
27:42So,
27:42when I had my first try,
27:44I just really started
27:46to struggle with the tires
27:47and Charles was probably
27:49already in that
27:49kind of consistent point.
27:51So,
27:51I backed off
27:52quite a bit
27:52for a few laps,
27:54went again
27:54and it worked.
27:55So,
27:56yeah,
27:56good strategy,
27:57some good driving
27:58and,
27:59yeah,
27:59a fun race.
28:00Charles,
28:01you were the outlier
28:01in the first 15 cars
28:03on the grid
28:03on the soft tires
28:04and,
28:05wow,
28:05you made the best
28:05of those
28:06in the first corner.
28:08Yeah,
28:08I was a little bit worried
28:09when I saw
28:10that I was the only car
28:11on soft
28:11at the beginning,
28:12but I kind of knew
28:13that it was a bit
28:13of a risky move.
28:15I mean,
28:16what I had in mind
28:17is to use the soft
28:18to try and get free air.
28:19It was quite optimistic
28:20because we had two cars
28:21in front,
28:22but that's what we tried
28:24to do.
28:24We at least gained a position
28:25and that helped us a lot
28:26for the rest of the race.
28:27So,
28:28I'm very happy overall
28:29because it's been
28:30a tough second part
28:32of the year
28:32and to be back
28:33on the podium here
28:34after what was
28:36a difficult FP1
28:37with a gearbox problem,
28:38we recovered well.
28:39So,
28:39I'm happy.
28:40You made your Ferrari
28:41as wide as you could
28:43but I mean,
28:43it was brilliant
28:44and very fair
28:45but hard racing
28:46between you two.
28:47Yeah,
28:47I enjoyed it.
28:48I enjoyed it.
28:49Unfortunately,
28:49today I lost out
28:50at the end
28:51but I had fun
28:52in the car.
28:54Max,
28:54so you've taken
28:5525 points
28:57out of Oscar's
28:58World Championship
28:58lead this weekend.
29:00You must be thinking
29:02I can do this.
29:03There's a chance
29:03to do this.
29:04Yeah,
29:04for sure.
29:05The chance is there.
29:06We just need to try
29:07and deliver these kind
29:08of weekends now
29:08until the end.
29:10So,
29:10yeah,
29:11we'll just try
29:12whatever we can.
29:12I think
29:13it's exciting
29:14and I'm just
29:15very excited
29:16to the end.
29:17Congratulations
29:17to you all.
29:18Enjoy the podium.
29:19Yes,
29:20right.
29:20And that is about
29:21as much thought
29:22as he's giving
29:23the championship.
29:24Everyone else
29:25is talking about it
29:26a lot
29:26but Max,
29:27race by race
29:27by race
29:28and we'll see
29:28what happens
29:29at the end.
29:29He's been here
29:30before, hasn't he?
29:31He's won four of them.
29:32He knows
29:32as long as you
29:33keep winning races
29:34and you keep
29:35outscoring your rivals,
29:37the championship
29:38will take care of itself
29:39and whatever happens
29:39and let's be honest,
29:41if they do come out
29:43and win it this year,
29:44it will be a bit
29:45of a surprise.
29:46It's not one of those
29:47like in previous seasons
29:48where, you know,
29:50you expected them
29:51to be there
29:51at the end.
29:52Going into the summer break,
29:54he had an awful race
29:55in Budapest.
29:56You would never have
29:57expected Verstappen
29:59to be even
29:59in the conversation.
30:00As I said,
30:01in the closing stage,
30:02a minute and 12 seconds
30:03behind the winner
30:04in Budapest
30:05and here he is
30:06winning once again
30:08and for a seventh time
30:09in the United States
30:11of America.
30:12What was he?
30:12104 points
30:13behind the championship lead
30:14only four races ago.
30:17He's now 40 points
30:19behind the championship lead.
30:21Yeah, even I could
30:21work the maths out
30:22on that.
30:23We'll hopefully
30:24go down to the cool-down room
30:26in a few moments' time
30:27and hear more
30:29from the top three.
30:30The next three events,
30:31Mexico next weekend,
30:33then we have
30:33a weekend off
30:34and after Firework Day
30:36we have the fireworks
30:37in Sao Paulo
30:38which is always
30:39a brilliant race
30:40and then we head
30:41to Las Vegas
30:42to see if someone
30:43can hit the jackpot there.
30:44Yeah, we've also got
30:45two sprints
30:45to go still in the season,
30:47haven't we?
30:47So lots of points
30:49up for grabs
30:50in the final five weekends
30:53of this world championship.
30:54There's a lot of people
30:55down there
30:56trying to get their way
30:57onto the grid.
30:58That is quite the stampede.
31:00You know what I realise?
31:01Well,
31:01less is included, I don't know.
31:11You both did
31:12medium soft, right?
31:14Uh-huh.
31:16You still hang on
31:16quite well.
31:17Yeah.
31:21What's always
31:22the plan for you?
31:23Uh, just
31:25it was an open
31:25option.
31:27Yeah, just depending
31:27on the rest of it.
31:29Yeah.
31:30You were surprised?
31:31Were you only one
31:32or the soft?
31:32I was a little bit surprised, yeah.
31:34I mean, we expected the majority
31:40on being on medium.
31:43I thought Lando
31:44you would be on soft.
31:45I feel like this one was so
31:52not nice.
31:54that was the first thing.
32:01Yeah.
32:02Yeah.
32:02Oh.
32:03Oh.
32:03Nice.
32:04Oh, that almost worked.
32:15This track is nice to race.
32:24Yeah, you can race for a while.
32:26Yeah.
32:26It would be nice if it was a bit easier.
32:33What?
32:33It would be nice if it was a bit easier.
32:35The top three having a good chat there.
32:39Charles Leclerc saying to Lando Norris,
32:41surprised you didn't start on the softs.
32:42That's a really good point, actually,
32:45because I have to admit,
32:46I thought to myself at the start of the race,
32:49if I was in a McLaren
32:50and my only chance to win
32:52is to try and beat Max off the line,
32:54I should start on the softs.
32:56But then I thought,
32:57oh, maybe it's too hard,
32:58nobody will use the soft, you know.
33:00But actually,
33:01I think that's the mindset, isn't it?
33:04Am I chasing the win?
33:06Yeah.
33:06Or am I trying to consolidate points?
33:08By McLaren going for the medium,
33:10being the slightly more conservative option,
33:12the message was,
33:13yes, we want to back the 18 points
33:18and if we get the wheelies of bonus.
33:19And I know it's a different time,
33:20but no data from the sprint whatsoever
33:22as to how the mediums were performing.
33:24So it was just,
33:25look, we think the soft might come into play,
33:27it might be medium hard,
33:29but we've got to go conservative
33:30and Andrea said that
33:31before the start of the race,
33:33Andrea Stella,
33:34that we're going to have to go conservative
33:36because we haven't got any data
33:38to give us an aggressive setup
33:41that we might feel does work.
33:44Either way,
33:45Charles Leclerc,
33:4528th birthday on Thursday
33:47and the bonus of a trophy today
33:50to make up for the fact
33:51that Simon Lazenby and Corinne Chandlop
33:52went to his birthday party
33:53on Thursday night.
33:55For Lando Norris,
33:56it is another second place finish for him.
34:00And for Max Verstappen,
34:03it is another victory.
34:07You know what's funny
34:07is how when you go from the hunter,
34:11you know,
34:11you become the hunter rather than hunted,
34:13the boos don't cheers.
34:15Max is popular everywhere now again.
34:17True.
