00:00And although historical records point to that Jose Gregorio Hernandez did not wear a white coat when treating his patients,
00:06the image of the doctor of the poor remains edged in the memory of Venezuelans.
00:11Where does Gregorio's legacy lives on today? Let's find out.
00:17Next to the Vargas Hospital in Caracas, you'll find these two doctors.
00:21They both joke that the other one looks like Jose Gregorio Hernandez.
00:25It is no surprise that Jose Gregorio studied and practiced medicine in these halls,
00:32leaving an indelible legacy in science but also in ethics that accompanies his steps.
00:38We are not here for a salary. We are here because we love our university.
00:42Because we want and believe in excellence.
00:44In other words, we are not here for a salary.
00:47We are here because we believe that this university will rise.
00:49It will continue to be number one in Latin America, just as it is currently number one in Venezuela.
00:54And that is what we instill in our students.
00:57Healthcare professionals who are educated under the framework of a humanistic, compassionate, and deeply ethical healthcare model.
01:04A characteristic he passed on to his students.
01:10Why? Because he told them,
01:12My mission is not to train scholars, but to train honorable and good men, who will always hold the name of Venezuela in high esteem.
01:21And in addition to this, that they always care for their neighbors to those most in need.
01:27Jose Gregorio Hernández, known as the doctor of the poor, was also the driving force behind experimental medicine in Venezuela.
01:35He introduced the microscope, taught medicine through practice and research,
01:40without ever abandoning his vocation for those most in need, uniting body, mind, and spirit.
01:46Every time, before he began treating patients, he would play the piano or the violin, to calm himself and his patients.
01:57This is now known as neuromusic.
02:00A pioneer in science, setting the standards throughout the region,
02:05but also with this unique approach to medicine, focused on the human well-being,
02:10which today inspires every neighborhood doctor, not only in Venezuela.
02:16These are the doors that opens for patients at the Comprehensive Care Center in Isnotu, his hometown.
02:22Jose Gregorio Hernández is a living example for all those doctors who are aware of the need for health care.
02:31Because there is a great need for health care.
02:34And many people do not have the resources to access private institutions.
02:39That is precisely why the Jose Gregorio Hernández Foundation
02:42embodies part of the legacy in every prosthesis and rehabilitation procedure
02:46that does enough patients have access to free of charge.
02:50The work that the mission is doing is miraculous.
02:54Jose Gregorio on one hand and the mission on the other.
02:58Because it is a miracle to be able to walk again.
03:02And it is the spirit of Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernández that
03:05always accompanies us and makes us do what we do.
03:09Because our daily work is sometimes difficult.
03:13We encounter many situations.
03:16To feel that light, feel that faith and that love,
03:19especially in what we are doing.
03:20And this is reflected in every hospital where a doctor upholds the hope of his patients,
03:28wearing the wet coat that identifies the doctor of the poor in the memory of every Venezuelan.
03:35I speak for how good and noble he was.
03:38He didn't care that people didn't have money for him to treat them.
03:42He was a very noble and good person.
03:44And he has performed miracles for us.
03:48We, the family, are very devoted to him.
03:51In fact, we worship him.
03:52We go to church and pray to him.
03:54We are going to go in procession.
03:55We are going to Isnatú.
03:56The whole family is going in a bus.
03:58There are doctors who will also be waiting for them at outpatient health centers,
04:05ready to receive visitors, who, without distinction, will be treated if they need it.
04:10It was what he always did, and that legacy still remains.
04:16And that is revolutionary, because I come from a country where doctors get rich from people's pain.
04:22You could be a millionaire in another country.
04:24Well, no, we prefer to treat our patients with ethics and dedication,
04:31because being millionaires is of no use to us if we don't have help.
04:36And these are the future generations who are being educated under the wing of humanistic medicine
04:41and who also come to Isnatú to be immortalized.
04:45With him, José Gregorio Hernández.
04:47Paola Drágnik, Luisiane Gómez, Gustavo Flores, Telesur, Isnatú.
