00:00Venezuela's National University of Sciences Dr. Humberto Fernandez-Maran leads the development
00:22of technology and medicine in the South American country. Our colleague Adriana Sibori tells us
00:27more in a new episode of Venezuela on the Move.
00:32Hello, how are you? In this final chapter of the season we will focus on education. In
00:38today's world, technology is an essential tool for development. It facilitates learning
00:43and research. Did you know that one of the pioneers of the digital age was a Venezuelan?
00:48Humberto Fernandez-Moran was a scientist recognized worldwide for his contribution to medicine
00:54and biology. For example, he invented the diamond knife or scapel used on surgeries. In this episode
01:00of Venezuela on the Move, we will visit a university that honors a great scholar and fosters independence
01:07and scientific talent. The University of Science is a public institution whose classrooms are
01:17occupied with cutting-edge technology. The students move from traditional writing notebooks to smart
01:26devices, smart devices, a colleague from my early childhood. Since I was a child, I've always asked
01:35myself questions like where plastic cups and gasoline come from. They were processes that were too complex
01:42to teach or explain to an eight-year-old girl. Years later, I delved deeper into the subject and discovered
01:49that all of those questions were related to petrochemical engineering. I am passionate about chemicals as well,
01:56and this engineer combines my two passions. That's what made me choose these studies.
02:04Gabriela is originally from the state of Amazonas in the border with Colombia.
02:08Here she shares her thoughts on the close relationship between philosophy and science.
02:13They are very advanced. I found it great that they combine the logical and rational thinking,
02:18which is the foundation of all science. It's great that they make us think, that they make us doubt,
02:23that they make us be convinced about what we believe, where we come from and why, the reason behind
02:29the things that have happened throughout history. And they also show us how we as young people can change them.
02:34During recess, they share moments together. They are the first class to graduate from this high
02:42education institution. We have a great opportunity and a great responsibility, not only to guide those
02:50coming after us, but to demonstrate that everyone can study science.
02:54It's purpose is to train national scientific talent to advance at its director's size through the
03:02independence of knowledge. We are leveraging the future from this cornerstone. We indubitably
03:08have unique study programs here in Venezuela, such as artificial intelligence engineering, robotics
03:14automatization and cyber security, which are probably the most eye-catching to the general public.
03:20However, our traditional ones also such as special degrees in mathematics, physics, nuclear physics,
03:28data science, computational biology and chemistry. In other words, we have a web of different threads
03:36that interbind to form the fabric that we need to build the future.
03:39They need every late generation. The objective is to create professionals of excellence to satisfy
03:48the different levels of the excellent society in terms of science and technology. We have the industries
03:55that are demanding qualified technical personnel. We need them in research centers. We need our university
04:01professors to train the future scientists of our homeland. Not everything takes place in the classroom
04:09and laboratories. For these students, science goes hand in hand with ecology.
04:15I feel that we are fulfilling a very important role because at the end of the day, this is one of the best things
04:22we can do, which is to repopulate the earth with trees and help the planet to regulate itself and recover
04:29from all the damage we have done to it.
04:34International cooperation agreements also play an important role in education. China and Venezuela
04:41have signed a document to strengthen our education system. And we say goodbye with a phrase from Nelson Mandela.
04:48Education is the most powerful weapon that can be used to change the world. With these words,
04:54we wrap up this week of Venezuela on the Move, where we show this year's most outstanding aspects
05:00of the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in relation to the development of his country.
05:06My team and I thank you for being with us and we invite you to keep in touch with our multi-platform.
