More than two feet of water rushed into motel rooms as a tropical wind and rainstorm sent tides surging on the coast of New Jersey on Oct. 13.
Transcript
00:00This damaging and disruptive tropical wind and rainstorm continues to punish the East Coast.
00:05Several people had to be rescued from a flooded motel near Atlantic City in New Jersey this afternoon.
00:10And AccuWeather's Bill Waddell is live right now in Egg Harbor Township.
00:14Bill, how high did that water get?
00:18Hey, Damian and the fire crews, rescue crews telling us the water was two to three feet deep in some of the hotel rooms.
00:25This is exactly the impact that AccuWeather has been warning people about.
00:29That coastal flooding as this storm moved up north and you can see what happened here.
00:34The storm helped push a lot of water into the bays and inlets and that's exactly what happened here.
00:39Water came spilling over the Black Horse Pike and right into that motel and parking lot.
00:46Now, take a look at the video.
00:48We're being told there were two to three feet of water inside some of the motel rooms that rushed in just after high tide.
00:55The police chief here telling us a man returned and he could not get to his dog inside.
01:01Within a matter of minutes, the rescue crews got here and they ended up finding five people who needed help.
01:08Pablo Rivera says he is grateful for the volunteers who got him out.
01:13I want to say a few thank you and I appreciate them so much and they're really great for what they're doing.
01:20It's a lot of risk that goes into saving these people's lives and putting themselves at risk.
01:25So, thank you.
01:26I thought it was just going to be like a normal storm.
01:28Maybe just a little flood, not as much, but ended up being a lot that I expected.
01:32Yeah, more water than he expected and that's the case for quite a few people.
01:38And it's not just the known flooding trouble spots that have been keeping emergency responders busy.
01:44We saw a few drivers going around the barricades, even going around police vehicles.
01:48But thankfully, you could see in the video, this driver turned around before getting in too deep and was able to get out okay.
01:55Again, the police chief here at Egg Harbor Township, just outside Atlantic City, telling us that all five people who were rescued, they are doing okay.
02:03That little dog princess doing all right as well.
02:06But this is exactly what they were concerned about.
02:08High water rushing in with the astronomical high tide.
02:12Thankfully, we are past high tide.
02:14We are starting to see those water levels recede.
02:17But again, guys, we are far from out of the woods.
02:19Still dealing with some rain, still dealing with some wind.
02:22But it is that coastal flooding that we're still dealing with.
02:25It's going to take quite some time for the water to clear out of some of these spots.
02:30Bill Waddell, thanks for the update.
02:32And I just want to reinforce what the police chief told you an hour ago.
02:35Turn around, don't drown, stay out of those flooded areas for everybody's safety.
