00:00Former Minister and Senator Vasant Bharath says that Prime Minister Kamala Prasad-Bissessa's
00:06Independence Day messages, one of which addressed the country and the other, her quote UNC family,
00:11aren't a mistake but a way to distract citizens from everyday issues.
00:16It's deliberate, it's calculated, it's well choreographed as far as she's concerned.
00:22And really the outcome for her is to create as much confusion, as much, there's a big word called
00:34discombobulation. All of those kinds of doubts are thrown in, and confusion is thrown into the
00:40national psyche. And then you, the reality is that people tend to forget their day-to-day problems,
00:49the real issues that are confronting them, the real issues that they have to deal with.
00:54Bharath says this aggressive, combative discourse mirrors the style of US President Donald Trump,
01:00but whether that works here in Trinidad and Tobago is left to be seen. But the damage may be long
01:06term.
01:06The problem is the damage long term that it's causing to the country, and to young people in
01:13particular, who really see both the PNM and UNC as both sides of the same coin. Six of one, half
01:21a dozen
01:21of the other. And most people in this country have now resigned themselves to just getting on with
01:27their lives, because they're just fed up of politics and politicians.
01:31Bharath notes that the majority of social interaction he comes across has undertones of tribalism
01:36on both sides, with rationale being thrown out of the window in some instances. And he particularly
01:42criticized the Prime Minister for the use of that rhetoric.
01:45Because none of what Mrs. Bicessa said over the last couple of days is politically neutral, right?
01:50Savagery, war, you know, the UNC family is what's important to me. Imagine a Prime Minister of a country
02:00singling out a segment of the population and saying, essentially, to hell with everybody else. This is
02:07what's important to me. But in fact, she was voted in, you know, in an overwhelming way by a large
02:16portion of
02:17the country of many different races. The UNC could not have won a general election without the participation
02:24of people who were non-Indian. So it's a slap in the face to all of those people to say,
02:30well,
02:30this group is what's important to me. And really, the rest of you are irrelevant.
02:35And his criticism of the UNC government doesn't mean he's picking sides.
02:39Bharath feels that a large portion of the population is completely disenfranchised with the current state
02:44of affairs and sees neither the PNM nor the UNC as the solution with their outdated political styles.
02:51At this point in time, if you take a snapshot of where Trinidad and Tobago is, I think most people
02:57have lost hope in the direction that the government and politics in general is taking. Our politics
03:05isn't working for us. Both parties are not fit for purpose. Neither of them. They come out of a
03:11colonial era of divide and rule, and it's not serving the purpose of the country at this point in time.
