Political Analyst Dr. Maukesh Basdeo is weighing in on the Prime Minister's Independence Day messages to the nation and the UNC, including her references to Peace or total War and the need for stealth and savagery in political leadership.

He says the statements warrant closer examination, particularly against the backdrop of the country's political and economic challenges.

Nicole M Romany has the story.

00:00Political analyst Dr Mukesh Bazdeo says the Prime Minister's language about peace or
00:06total war speaks to more than political confrontation, viewing it as part of the broader question
00:13of succession within the UNC.
00:15He says the sentiment also reminds him of a famous statement by the party's founder
00:21Bazdeo Pandey that politics has a morality of its own.
00:25And that statement also speaks about leadership and therefore what the Prime Minister would
00:32have used in her message to the party and maybe we can say that it does contain some
00:38elements of let's say succession planning in preparation for 20 what happened post-2030
00:45or the lead up to the 2030 general election but it's setting the backdrop for that the
00:53next leader of the UNC would have to adopt this thing as a strong person to hold the party together.
01:02Dr Bazdeo tells the morning edition the comments also appear rooted in internal tensions that surfaced
01:09within the party before the April 2025 election.
01:13There were certain issues relating to dissension among the rank and file of its parliamentary caucus and that
01:21had raised certain issues and the party was able to actually overcome these internal conventions and so
01:30forth and be successful in the general elections of April 2025.
01:34So a Prime Minister speaking in the context of the political leader that the party's machinery,
01:43the party's systems, the party's institutions must be strong to actually deal with such.
01:49Turning to her Independence Day message to the country, he says the Prime Minister was ultimately looking
01:56beyond at the present moment arguing that many of the country's current social and economic problems
02:02are the result of human decisions and therefore can be changed.
02:07What she was trying to do is that in that message she was trying to convey that the country must
02:15take
02:16responsibility for its future. Stemming from after 64 years of let's say independence,
02:22and celebrating independence 1960 to onwards, I think the Prime Minister was clearly
02:28positioning the country into recognizing where we are. Nicole M. Romney, TV6 News.
