00:24Take a clicker off.
00:26Not very professional having a clicker off.
00:30He's coming.
00:32Hey! Hey!
00:34F***ing f***!
00:36Oi! Oi!
00:42Oi! Oi!
00:44Oi!

01:24Hi, mate.
01:33Hi, Jay.
01:34I've got some evidence to bring in and show you.
01:37You still around?
01:39Yeah, I'm in the office, so just pop in.
01:42I'm just on my way in.
01:43I'll see you shortly.
01:54So what have we got here?
02:15Quite a serious incident that's involved a commercial fishing vessel and a private fishing vessel.
02:22I sent you a video.
02:24It speaks for itself.
02:25Let's have a look.
02:27This is on the Blackbird, private fishing vessel.
02:30It's owned by the guy in the red jacket.
02:31The other guy's Jake.
02:33He's a YouTuber.
02:34Okay.
02:35He's videoing it.
02:36And I can see what's looming in the background.
02:40That's probably 100 metres away, if that.
02:42I'm coming in fast.
02:44Yeah.
02:44What's that boat about?
02:46150, 160 tonnes.
02:48Huge.
02:49Wow.
02:52The fishing vessel just smacked straight into the back of them.
03:01That's shocking.
03:04Have these chaps got any injuries at all?
03:06Nothing major.
03:08Wow.
03:10Looking at that, it's incredible that this hasn't been a double fatality.
03:16If you just go back again, at this point, you can see Jake's gone out of shot, but Jake
03:22has actually physically got hold of the anchor chain and he's pulling the boat along it to
03:27get it out of the way.
03:28Right.
03:28I think the actions of Jake has saved their lives, hasn't it?
03:35Yeah, completely.
03:37If he hadn't done that, it would have gone straight to the middle of the boat and we'd have been
03:41dealing with two fatalities.
03:43Wow.
03:44He was quick thinking.
03:46That is a shocking piece of footage.
03:49Does the vessel stop after this has happened?
03:51No.
03:52Right.
03:53Doesn't stop at all.
03:54They never saw the vessel again.
03:56Okay.
04:00It's clear that there's a significant breach of merchant shipping legislation here.
04:04This is a very serious offence.
04:08We need to launch an investigation into exactly what's happened there.
04:11Yeah.
04:11We know the victims, but we don't know the name of the vessel.
04:16We don't know who the skipper is.
04:18Witnesses as well.
04:19We don't know who else was on the vessel.
04:21Yeah, there could easily be others on there that would have seen it.
04:25We are lucky that two men haven't died there, so we need to find out who that skipper was,
04:30get him questioned as quickly as possible.
04:41Okay, Coast Guard.
04:43Do you hear me?
04:45Yes, I can hear you, yes.
04:47Hello.
04:47I'm the duty officer right now.
04:50Okay, and sorry, who is it you're calling from?
04:52From Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Madrid.
05:02We have been informed by your telemedical assistance service.
05:08All right, I'll ring the scramble line now.
05:38Good morning, it's Dornoway.
05:47Good morning, it's James at Air Rescue.
05:50I've got a pretty serious incident to task you guys to.
05:54It's a Spanish fishing vessel, and it's got two very severely injured crewmen.
06:00And have you got injuries of the people on board, please?
06:02One on Casualty is trapped in the winch by me, and they're some way off.
06:08They're 207 kilometres north-northwest of Stornoway.
06:12Okay, you can get a lap long to that, please.
06:20Yeah, got it.
06:21This is where the Ladara is at the moment.
06:22They're way out to the northwest of the Hebrides.
06:24Yeah, it might be an option if the wind changes.
06:36It's actually an option, yeah.
06:37We really have to run the tanks down.
06:39Otherwise, Stornoway, Inverness, or Glasgow.
06:43It would have to be quick to get to Glasgow.
06:45Back to Stornoway, I think, for this one.
06:47Back to Stornoway.
06:48We are getting a sat-phone number for the vessel,
06:59and we'll ask them to turn towards the Western Isles
07:01to cut down the distance.
07:03Max fuel for that?
07:04Yeah, we're getting max fuel.
07:06Slight performance penalty, but I think it's better for up to gas.
07:09Hi, Pete. It's JC.
07:10If you could put max fuel in the cab, that'd be great.
07:18Call from Madrid.
07:22One of the crew members has suffered an amputation of the leg.
07:26Cracky.
07:29Two trying to stop bleeding.
07:31Two mass requests immediate evacuation.
07:48UK rescue, UK rescue, this is rescue 948.
07:59We're just starting up at Stornoway.
08:00You're going to have four persons on board.
08:02Majority of 4 hours and 1-0 a minute.
08:05The guy with the leg amputation is free,
08:19but they just can't stop his bleeding.
08:21And the other is still trapped in the winch.
08:23OK, Mike, if you spring us up to 1,000 feet, mate,
08:36try and get a bit of tailwind.
08:46Looking at the fuel, Glasgow is still an option now.
08:49If they need to go to the major trauma centre,
08:51but you lose that option after roughly 30 minutes on the day.
08:58Wanderers is still trapped.
09:00And then there's some concerns
09:01how we're actually getting out of the winch.
09:15Rescue 948 have been scrambled.
09:18If, for whatever reason,
09:20they can only rescue the guy who's lost the leg,
09:24I need a plan B.
09:26Potentially, we're looking at rescue 151 attending.
09:36Hello.
09:37Hello, it's James at air rescue.
09:38Can I please forward deploy you?
09:43I'll do that.
09:56UK rescue, UK rescue, this is rescue 948.
09:59We have also tasked rescue 151 from Inverness.
10:03UK rescue, rescue 948, that's copied, arriving on the scene.
10:12Just looking at a possible transfer, it's pretty cladded.
10:14A lot of items on the deck for you, Nan.
10:25I'll be too.
10:29If you come alongside,
10:30are you ready for your first office?
10:32Yes, mate.
10:33Yeah.
10:34Are you happy this is a start position?
10:36Yeah, looks good.
10:38Effort then, though,
10:39we'll descend, deploy, Nan,
10:41and climb to the operating height.
10:43Okay.
10:48Steady.
10:50Steady.
10:55Steady.
10:57He's on the deck.
11:00UK rescue, UK rescue, this is rescue 948.
11:03I've just been told the second man,
11:05he is no longer trapped.
11:08He has sustained various broken bones in his legs.
11:11Yeah, I've got the two casualties.
11:25They're both pretty bad.
11:26We, I think we're going to have to take both at the same time.
11:29It's still surprising, even now,
11:45something went seriously wrong here.
11:59Extraordinary.
12:00We have no idea what's happened on that vessel
12:09that's caused it to do that.
12:12There may have been some kind of emergency.
12:14We don't know, and we have to find that out
12:16so that we can get a full understanding
12:18of what's happened.
12:19Fortunately, here, you can see,
12:23as you move a bit further on,
12:25you can see the IMO number.
12:29That's specific for the vessel.
12:31It's a bit like a vehicle identification number for boats.
12:35We'll be able to trace the vessel from that.
12:37We've found the vessel, which is the Margaret Ann.
12:45A fairly big scalper.
12:48The registered owner has actually leased the vessel
12:51to another fishing company based in Brixham.
12:54I can speak to them directly,
12:56find out what the state of play is,
12:58safety folders, copies of route planning, etc.
13:00Who the crew are, what their qualifications are,
13:03and, in particular, who the skipper is.
13:05We'll speak to them, get statements from them.
13:08At this stage, obviously,
13:09we're just trying to make initial inquiries.
13:11That way, we can get a full understanding
13:13of what's happened.
13:14I've managed to speak to most of the crew that are available.
13:35One is the second-in-command.
13:37He had previously been on the bridge just before the incident.
13:42The skipper had relieved him.
13:45Most of the others were down at the rear of the vessel.
13:48They were completely unaware of having hit the vessel
13:50until they heard shouting through an open porthole.
13:55So they ran up to the wheelhouse from the back of the boat
13:59to find out what was going on.
14:01They got in there and found out the skipper was actually asleep,
14:05and they physically had to wake him up.
14:08That's undoubtedly why it hit the back of their boat.
14:12Definitely starting to ring alarm bells
14:16for the competition of the skipper.
14:23The whole incident can really only boil down to him.
14:27So I've arranged to meet the skipper
14:29down at Plymouth Marine Office,
14:31where I'm going to do the voluntary interview under caution.
14:34If there is an admission from him,
14:39then absolutely we'll take him to court.
14:41But we'll see what he has to say.
14:43A rescue knife for eight.
14:58Intentions are asked to take both casualties.
15:01You can tell them to stand down.
15:03151 now.
15:04I've got the two casualties packaged now.
15:15There'll be two stretchers.
15:17That's copied now.
15:25Rescue helicopter nine for eight.
15:27I'm just going to pass you a high-line brief.
15:28Are you ready to copy?
15:29Over.
15:39Three, two, one.
15:43Clear to win.
15:45I'm trying to dispatch.
15:47On the left.
15:49Get to play.

18:20Given the severity of these injuries, survival times are minimal.
18:31You could die within minutes.
18:35It was my concern that the casualties would not make it.
18:38I don't know how they were still alive when we actually reached the hospital.
18:58As with every casualty that's got anything trauma-related, that patient or casualty will deteriorate very, very quickly.
19:08Time is of the essence.
19:09You're in the hospital.
19:11You're in a lot of pain just now.
19:13We just have no control over the outcome.
19:16We just have to do our best and see if they could survive.
19:19We just have to do our best.
19:26Coast Guard Rescue.
19:45I'm at C and at North Point.
19:48My little dog's gone over the edge of the cliff.
19:53How long ago did you go over?
19:54About 20 minutes.
19:57Yeah, we can see her.
20:02We're going to get some Coast Guards moving to your location straight away.
20:08Don't put yourself in any difficulty by going too close to the edge.
20:14She's 30 foot from the floor up and about 20 foot down.
20:19I can hear her.
20:20She's obviously just to be scared.
20:22The Coast Guard will be at about 10 minutes, please.
20:26Nobody puts themselves into any danger.
20:30I'm the Coast Guard, C and Mobile, we're departing C and CRE now
20:33and heading for the dog over the cliff at North's Point.
20:37The road that you're apart is received.
20:40Okay, I'm recovering from the dog to place the safety.
20:43In order to stop members of the public attempting to arrest me.
20:45Come on.
20:45Massive cliffs over there and all, aren't they?
20:56If it's on a ledge, the potential of further injury or possible death if it falls from the ledge is quite high.
21:03Oh, there's the first informant there.
21:13Sunderland's already on scene.
21:15Yeah, I'm the Coast Guard Mobile there.
21:16That just arrived on scene now.
21:18Save Mobile out.
21:19Can I get CRO to start getting the animal bag prep, please?
21:43Yeah, it is.
21:44I'll work from there if I can.
21:52Main line's on the red.
21:54Safety line's on the blue.
21:56I'm just going to jump on that ESO line and have a quick look at what I've got first.
22:01Where is he?
22:01Let's have a look.
22:02There he is.
22:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:06Right.
22:07It's probably about 20 metres.
22:14Can I grab you one second, please?
22:27Just getting finished and set up on here and then I'm good to go.
22:31Try not to worry.
22:32We're going to do our best to get him back.
22:33Just remain on that side of the fence.
22:38I'll just get down and try and get him in the bag.
22:40Just get him in the bag.
22:40I'll get him in the bag.
22:44Can we have a function test, please, on safety line?
22:49Lower.
22:50Stop.
22:51Adam, can you check me off, please?
22:54Good.
22:56Good.
22:57Nick, I'm ready to go, mate.
22:59Main and safety, are we ready?
23:00Clifftop has control.
23:03Clifftop has control.
23:04Down on both.
23:14Clifftop has control, down on safety only.
23:28Bit of an overhand.
23:30Just trying to...
23:31get...
23:32get...
23:35get...
23:37tick...
23:40stop.
23:41Stop.
23:42Stop.
23:44Are you all right, Andy?
23:45Yeah.
23:45That's it.
23:47Ready?
23:51Clifftop has control, down.
23:58Are you happy now?
23:59Do you want to load yourself now?
24:00Oh, it's for now, Adam.
24:18Hey, Marley.
24:20Here's a good dog.
24:21Good dog.
24:27Stop.
24:31Clifftop, er, with the dog now, er, stand by us.
24:34We'll show, er, recovery methane, Alvin.
24:42Hello.
24:44Hello.
24:45Hey, you're here.
24:50Come on.
24:51Come on.
24:52Come on.
25:03Come on.
25:05Hey.
25:06Try not to get stressed.
25:08Come on.
25:10Look at this.
25:13Are you ready for recovery, Alvin?
25:16He's freaking out.
25:18Come on.
25:20Come on.
25:22Come on.
25:24Come on.
25:26Come on.
25:29Come on.
25:31Come on.
25:33Come on.
25:35Come on.
25:36He's freaking out.
25:51Come on, come on, there's a good dog.
26:06Hey, good dog.
26:36Good boy, good boy, go on.
26:51Yes, just trying to keep them steady on my knees.
27:01Hello, that's a good pup.
27:08Hey, Molly.
27:11I see you.
27:13Hello.
27:14Let's keep fourth range travelling at the same speed, guys.
27:18Up.
27:20Up.
27:21Up.
27:22Hello.
27:24There's a good lad.
27:26Hey, good to see you, Mum.
27:28Hey, good to see you, Mum.
27:29I see you.
27:30Hey.
27:31I see you.
27:37I've folded the bag.
27:38I've folded the bag to stop him darting from side to side.
27:43I've sort of wrapped him up like that,
27:45because he's pinging from side to side.
27:47Put him in the back of the truck to let him out, Adam, so he doesn't bolt with the owner, yes?
28:00So pull the ID over, Adam.
28:01Pull the ID over.
28:02Right.
28:03Stop now.
28:04Stop.
28:05Right.
28:06Right.
28:07Now, if we can take the handle and lift the bag round that side.
28:10Yeah, and leave him there.
28:11Right.
28:12Up.
28:20Yeah, just let myself right out.
28:22Steady there.
28:23Nice one.
28:24Nice one.
28:31Lumber Coast Guard, this is Sunderland Oscar.
28:33Ma'am.
28:34Yes.
28:35The dog recovers here from at the Smith top.
28:39Sunderland Mobile, Lumber Coast Guard.
28:40Many thanks for assistance.
28:41Stand down and approve, sir.
28:43Lumber Coast Guard out.
28:45It's all right, Marley.
28:46It's all right, Marley.
28:47You're such a good man.
28:48Brilliant.
28:52I am a dog owner, and I have been a dog owner for many years.
28:57Some of the team call me the dog whisperer.
29:00If you've got a pet yourself, you'll know what they mean to the owner.
29:04The second that zip closes, that's eye of relief.
29:09It's always an overwhelming feeling to get the dog back to its owner.
29:13That's what we train to do, to prevent those people from attempting that self-rescue.
29:19Because that's when we have an animal and a human casualty.
29:22That's how it will be.
29:36Aaron Oscar rescued.
29:38We've got a job over on Trasko at our vicinity.
29:42It's a witness cardiac arrest for a 70-year-old male.
29:45Apparently patient on a vessel, a 59-foot vessel at the moment.
29:59It's in the harbour.
30:01How it's going to be to get him off, I'm not too sure.
30:04I imagine that'll be addressed to you.
30:06Do you know if it's alongside a Quayside or if it's an anchor?
30:09I'm not sure, I'm afraid.
30:10Bearing in mind it's a cardiac arrest, I think what I'll do is speak to 924 and get them going.
30:29Hello there, New Key, it's the Arc Key. Can I task you please to Trasko on the Isles of Scilly?
30:41We have a male who's had a witness cardiac arrest on board a vessel.
30:46At the moment, no paramedic crew.
30:49Unfortunately, they have very scant information.
30:51They don't know the vessel type and I don't have a name for it at the moment, I'm afraid.
30:54It's either going to be for access to winch him off his vessel or if they can get him off his vessel,
30:59obviously bring him back to the mainline.
31:00We have got a grid reference for the vessel here for you of Sierra Vicks,
31:02which is the main source of the vessel and that's what we need to bring him back to the mainline.
31:07We have got a grid reference for the vessel here for you of Sierra Vicks.
31:24We have got a grid reference for the vessel here for you, of Sierra Victor, eight, eight, six, one, five, two.
31:36We need one, four miles, headed one, seven, six.
31:41We don't know whether they're on the boat or on the bus line.
31:45The boat just sounds like it's still the best game.
31:47I don't know if you want to get it off or something like that.
31:49How busy it is in here.
31:52I've just been seven minutes to run.
31:54Oh, come on.
32:11Okay, there's the...
32:13I guess we're going to be putting you down on the jetty.
32:17Well, you've got all the people on the jetty at the moment.
32:20Definitely included, Trish Denner.
32:21The whole incident can really only boil down to him
32:36and whatever he's got to say.
32:39He was fast asleep and really it was an out of urgency finding out what he has to say.
32:54There may be some mitigation in it but at the moment it doesn't look like he's going to have any.
33:09We gave him a few more chances to respond to us.
33:25We didn't get any response whatsoever.
33:31Eventually we decided that the best solution was to send him the interview questions by email.
33:37If I'm really honest I wasn't expecting any response whatsoever.
33:41I thought we were going to have to just take this to court.
33:45But then he's responded to us.
33:49He has admitted to being the only person in the wheelhouse at the time.
33:57He has admitted to being asleep whilst looking after the vessel.
34:01He's mitigated it by saying that he was aware of what he called a close quarter situation with another vessel but didn't realise he'd hit them.
34:13However, the positive thing is that he's responded to us and that means that we can now use that as part of our evidence when we go to court.
34:19He should have a look out at all times as part of collision regulations clearly that didn't happen.
34:37He's put himself in this position and really there isn't much place for him to go.
34:41Fishing boat is it?
34:55Yes, sir. Fishing boat alongside.
34:57Can't tell the bloody
35:08I think anyone looks like, this is sick from boundaries

36:28Okay.
36:29And his wife is there behind us.
36:31There were three off-duty doctors.
36:33He had immediate CPR.
36:35When I arrived, one shot delivered.
36:38Oh.
36:39It's a good sign that he's making noises.
36:48I haven't had a chance to do a 12 lead.
36:51As a Winchman paramedic, you're always grateful for early intervention by competent individuals.
37:06It's certainly going to improve the chances of survival.
37:08But at that point, the casualty is in a very delicate state.
37:21Until they're under full monitoring within a hospital environment, there's no real guarantee.
37:25There is a high chance that they might arrest again.
37:30He has a regular tachycardia of 120.
37:34What time is the witness to that?
37:36Must be over an hour now.
37:37We will have to put him in your device, because we can.
37:47We'll slide him out, and we'll just lift him straight into our Uber.
37:57Yeah, we'll put him at that end, and we'll bring him straight on.
