Bicycling's Tom Messina talks about fall bike maintenance.
Transcript
00:00Just gave my bike a deep, deep clean because it's a new season and there's really no better time
00:06than the new season to take a close look at everything that's going on here. First, give
00:10it a real wash, like with a hose and soap and a sponge. This isn't something I like to do far too
00:16often because of bearings and other sensitive areas. Second is once you have it all put back
00:21together, let's take a look at the chain. Personally, I have a wax chain and when you
00:25measure the wear with a tool, any wax buildup or other impurities will actually throw off the chain
00:32accuracy. So make sure it is crystal, crystal clean to get the most accurate measurement.
00:37And if it falls below that threshold, go ahead and replace it. Then lastly, talk about tires.
00:42There comes a point where you have to just let your ego aside and realize those set of GPs or those set
00:50of Pirellis have had a really, really good run. If you're pushing 1,000, 1,500, if you're really
00:56creeping up on those mileage, when you're stranded with a blowout on the side of the road, isn't the
01:02time you want to think, man, I should have replaced those. So check the wear dots on your tires and just
01:08go ahead and slap a new pair on. So check the wear dots on those tires and go ahead and put a new pair
01:12on for the new season.
