00:00As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Welcome to the afternoon session, everyone.
00:06And of course, we are following lunch and also following Ferdows and Kamaruddin, so it's kind of a tough act to follow.
00:13But inshallah, hopefully our stories will move your hearts.
00:17And thank you to our panelists who are up here with me today, Sister Amanda, Brother Malik, Brother Talha.
00:24Alhamdulillah. So, as you saw from the video, we are here to unite the hearts.
00:31But we also know that as reverts, when we first start our journey, it's not so easy.
00:38It's not always a uniting feeling. Sometimes we have to go through hashtag revert journey first.
00:45And sometimes, you know, we each have our own tailor-fit journey, but we also have some things in common.
00:52Yeah? So, I'd like to first start, perhaps, not going into the questions yet, but going into your revert journeys, but a short one.
01:04Perhaps we can each go through, starting with Sister Amanda.
01:08How long have you been a Muslim?
01:11And also, if you had to summarize your revert journey in one word, what would it be and why?
01:18Bismillah, alhamdulillah.
01:20Thank you for having me today to humbly share my experience as a Chinese-Malaysian revert.
01:27I have been a Muslim for two and almost half years now, alhamdulillah.
01:32And if I were to summarize it in one word, I would say transformational, of course, for the better.
01:38Alhamdulillah.
01:40Brother Malik.
01:41Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim.
01:43Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, everybody.
01:48I've been revert for 15 years now.
01:51And if I were to summarize it in one word, it's the struggle is real.
02:00Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim.
02:07Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
02:10Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
02:12I've reverted about 11 years ago, alhamdulillah.
02:16And if there's one word to describe my journey, it's probably unexpected.
02:20I don't know, because the morning I woke up, or in fact, the morning I woke up, not knowing
02:29that in the evening I would be a Muslim.
02:31And alhamdulillah, Qadarallah, his plans, and just right after taking the shahadah, everything
02:38else is actually unexpected.
02:41Unexpected first maghrib, unexpected first isha, zuhur, asar, and the list goes on.
02:48And last week I got a call from Hilmi Ang saying that, Dave, you need to become a
02:56panelist.
02:57And I go like, ah, this is also unexpected.
02:59So unexpected is the word.
03:01Mashallah, mashallah.
03:03I think I connect to your unexpected, because the day that I reverted also is unexpected.
03:07I wasn't planning on it as well, 12 years ago.
03:11Unexpected as well, but my word is submission, total submission.
03:14Because the path that was given to me was not the path I was planning at all.
03:21Alhamdulillah.
03:22Okay, so now we start our first round of questions.
03:25So I ask your permission to dig into your stories a little bit.
03:29Yeah, and I ask for your permission to be patient as well as we go through these stories.
03:35Okay, so as mentioned before, at the beginning of every reverts journey, we have a test.
03:44All the reverts in the room know.
03:46We are always first tested for our sincerity.
03:49Sister Amanda, when you first reverted, what was your big test?
03:59Was there anyone who perhaps distanced themselves from you?
04:04Or was there someone that perhaps, you know, left your life because of it?
04:10Yes, in fact, there was.
04:12I actually came to find out about Islam through my partner.
04:17And after taking my Shahada, his family thought that I was not a suitable choice to be a spouse
04:25due to cultural differences, Qadr Allah.
04:27But Alhamdulillah, just a bit of backstory, I grew up in a Buddhist family.
04:34And later on, I also, like, how to say, I also went to churches and all,
04:41but I couldn't accept the concept of the Trinity.
04:48And when I came to find out about Islam, Alhamdulillah, it was really, really life-changing.
04:54Mashallah, mashallah.
04:57And you say that you came to Islam through a partner, but they distanced themselves.
05:02For some people, when that happens, you know, we do see couples coming into Al-Qadim or other places.
05:08And there are such a thing as, of course, marriage, you know, reversion because of marriage.
05:14But for you, it was just before.
05:15So some people, when that happens and the breakup happens, they end up leaving their path towards Islam.
05:22What was it with you and Islam that kept you going?
05:26There is this one hadith that actually I held on to during the most times of hardships.
05:33It's from Sahih Al-Bukhari.
05:37It says that if Allah wills good for someone, he will afflict them with trials.
05:43And I really, really held on to that, Alhamdulillah.
05:48But more than that was by that time, I had already, I already loved Islam so much more than the individual.
05:57And through the basic foundations of the 561, we know that we have a direct connection to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
06:03There is no intermediaries.
06:05We fast in the month of Ramadan and we have social obligations to the poor by giving zakat, charity and all that.
06:14Alhamdulillah.
06:16And Islam is a religion that brings unity to us all instead of like how it is sometimes seen that we are divided or we keep to ourselves and all that.
06:33So, yeah, I would say I found the true beauty of Islam.
06:37Alhamdulillah.
06:38MashaAllah.
06:38Alhamdulillah.
06:39So sometimes it's just the path that Allah has given to you or to us.
06:44Yeah, it's not always the end journey, but it's the path that Allah brings us into Islam.
06:49How about you, Brother Talha?
06:52Perhaps, I don't know what your specific test was, but I'm going to go out on a limb.
06:59Could you tell us maybe your family's reaction?
07:01How did they react to your reversion?
07:05Okay.
07:06So basically for my story, the very beginning, my mother called me a disgrace to the family.
07:13So first, you know, a lot of things that were going through my head at the point I didn't know how to react to her comments being a disgrace to the family.
07:23I first thought that, you know, maybe because, oh, she was going to start a lecture on telling me, you know, how Jesus Christ died for your sin on the cross and all that.
07:37But actually it was more like protecting the family's name.
07:41I don't know if you know in the Indian family, they say in every family, there's this one guy who reverts or converts to Islam.
07:49So I was probably the, that guy who became a Muslim in the Indian family.
07:56So she was very embarrassed about, you know, having to tell people that I'm already a Muslim and he don't join us for this and that.
08:07I was not particularly sad about it.
08:10I could understand her feelings or where she was coming from when she called me a disgrace.
08:16The most I can do is to be a good son to my mother.
08:24Of course, she reacted that way.
08:26My father, he's a man with few words.
08:30When he knew that I was already a Muslim, because I was a Muslim in secret for four years.
08:36And when I kind of like broke the news, my father literally actually sat there and continued watching his Vanneville channel.
08:43So those days, you know, when he asked me to bring a screwdriver and I bring the wrong one, he'll scold me.
08:53But not for this case.
08:54I became a Muslim and he was so chill.
08:56And yeah, those are some of the reactions that I get from my family, especially from my mother.
09:02It's a bit hurtful, but, you know, I could understand her and just show a good example, I guess.
09:10Okay, so you said that, okay, all you could do was keep being a good son and show a good example.
09:15So how do they feel about you now?
09:17Alhamdulillah, today, you know, I shared a story to my mother on a story.
09:22We were talking and I said, Amma, you know what the Prophet said?
09:28You know what Prophet Muhammad said, you know, once he said, a man came to him.
09:32And the man asked Prophet Muhammad who I should love and respect most.
09:39And Prophet Muhammad said, your mother.
09:42And then my mother was like, okay.
09:44And then the man said, after your mother, your mother again.
09:47After your mother again, then what?
09:49Your mother again.
09:50And then your father.
09:52And I waited for a reaction just to make her probably feel good and proud.
09:56But guys, I continued waiting lah.
10:00No reaction.
10:05So I'm still trying my best.
10:07She hates to see me with the beard.
10:11Sometimes she thinks that, you know, she's afraid that maybe someday I'll join the Al-Qaeda.
10:19And die in don't know which Islamic state or country.
10:23I said, no, I'm not going to do all that.
10:24And show good character.
10:28And that's all, I guess.
10:29Mila, make it easy for your family and all of our families.
10:32I mean.
10:33Okay, Brother Malik, I'm sure that you have a story of your own.
10:36What was your big test in the beginning?
10:38Your test of sincerity?
10:43I actually wanted to be a Muslim when I was 17 years old.
10:47Coming from a very strong Buddhist family.
10:54So to my mother, again, it was very hurtful for her.
11:02Because I used to join the Buddhist society, the associations, and very active, in fact.
11:09But the decision to become a Muslim when I was 17 was after I read a letter from Mecca that was wrote by Malcolm X to his wife.
11:20And if you are familiar with Malcolm X, he comes from the NOI, Nation of Islam in America.
11:30And they are a very close-knit community.
11:36Only the African Americans practice Islam.
11:40And they think, they thought that Elijah Muhammad was actually Prophet Muhammad.
11:44And of course, during the 60s, there's a lot of segregation.
11:48The white society, the black society, you know.
11:50So, but when he went to Mecca, he wrote this letter to his wife, Betty.
11:56So when I read that letter, it struck my heart.
12:01Because I thought, how can a religion can only be practiced by one single race?
12:07The Buddhists are the Chinese.
12:09The Hindus are the Indians.
12:10And how come Islam for the Malays?
12:12If I may, I would like to share this letter that he wrote.
12:20Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood,
12:28as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient holy land,
12:36the home of Abraham, Muhammad, and all the other prophets of the holy scriptures.
12:40For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see
12:48displayed all around me by people of all colors.
12:53I have been blessed to visit the holy city of Mecca.
12:57I have made my seven circles around the Ka'bah, led by a young mutawaf named Muhammad.
13:04I drank water from the well of the Zamzam.
13:06I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mount Al-Safah and Al-Marwaf.
13:14I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mount Arafat.
13:20There were tens of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.
13:24They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans.
13:28But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood
13:37that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white.
13:46So when I read this when I was 17, I told my mother, I'm going to be a Muslim one day,
13:51and I'm going to choose my name Malik after Malcolm X.
13:54She didn't understand.
13:56That's why I named myself Malik.
13:59So I waited another 17 years.
14:02I revert when I was 34.
14:04The first thing my mother said to me,
14:06If you understand Chinese,
14:10He said,
14:11Bloody hell, you joined the Malaysian religion.
14:15I didn't know what to do.
14:16I moved out.
14:17I mean, after consulting Sheikh Hussein,
14:20and he said,
14:20Just move out from the house.
14:22That's just what I did.
14:23And again, until today,
14:25I don't think they still accept it.
14:27I think until today,
14:28she's still hoping that I will one day revert back to being a Buddhist.
14:33Yeah.
14:34Thank you for sharing.
14:35It's my story.
14:36May Allah give you ease as well.
14:38Amen.
14:38Thank you so much for sharing the story, too.
14:40We see, you know,
14:41there have been prolific reverts in the past with their voices.
14:45You know, we see Malcolm X.
14:47We even see Muhammad Ali,
14:48who used to be just so charismatic in media,
14:51and who knows,
14:52perhaps one of the reverts inside of here,
14:54inside this hall,
14:55may one day be the voice that reunites the ummah as well.
14:59Okay.
15:00Sister Amanda,
15:00I want to ask you about your family as well.
15:03How did your own family react?
15:05Were there some people who supported,
15:07didn't support?
15:08What happened?
15:10Alhamdulillah,
15:11my situation is not as intense as the fellow brothers,
15:15but the initial reaction when I told my family that I wanted to take my Shahada,
15:22was they called a family meeting,
15:25gathered everyone,
15:26and like basically there was,
15:29I know now that they were doing it out of love and concern for me,
15:33but it really came as a shock to me,
15:37because my auntie,
15:39she actually reverted,
15:42she converted to Christianity,
15:45and there was no such a big reaction,
15:48but due to the common misconceptions about Islam,
15:52yeah,
15:53that's why they called the family meeting,
15:54but Alhamdulillah,
15:55my brother was there to help diffuse some of the intense moments on that day.
16:00Yeah.
16:02Mashallah.
16:02So you mentioned diffusing and all this.
16:08Actually in Islam,
16:09we have some lessons about how to honor the family,
16:13right?
16:13Can you maybe share maybe a lesson that you learned from Islam about,
16:17you know,
16:17how do we honor families even though they're not yet Muslim?
16:23Islam always teaches us about peace,
16:25love,
16:26and honoring our,
16:27especially our parents,
16:29honoring and respecting our neighbors,
16:32to not be rude to them,
16:33even though they are still not yet Muslims,
16:35but we are still our,
16:37they are still our families.
16:38And my mentors at Al-Qadim,
16:41Alhamdulillah,
16:41they always reminded me to tell my family that I'm still your daughter,
16:44or I'm still your niece,
16:45I'm still Chinese.
16:47And because their initial reaction was that they thought that I would go away from them,
16:51or the rift between us would be further.
16:54But Alhamdulillah,
16:55Islam was the one that helped heal the fracture within myself and within my family.
17:00Alhamdulillah.
17:01Yeah.
17:02Mashallah.
17:03Maybe continuing on this theme of uniting and harmonizing,
17:08Brother Malik,
17:09you were just talking about how you were searching for a religion that is for everyone.
17:14And I got to know offstage a little bit about your upbringing,
17:18that when you were growing up,
17:20you faced segregation in the schools.
17:23How do you see that?
17:25What was going on with that?
17:26Well,
17:28I guess if you studied in our national school,
17:32everyone,
17:33you would know that we have pendidikan moral,
17:37and then we have pendidikan agama.
17:40It's two things.
17:41So every time when we see our Malay friends go for their agama lesson,
17:48we cannot go because,
17:49you know,
17:49we want to hold the Quran,
17:52but we go for pendidikan moral.
17:55So it's very funny,
17:56but we can learn about Buddhism,
17:58we can go for Bible studies,
18:00but we cannot learn Islam.
18:02So I think somehow this should not happen in our national school.
18:09I think it should be open for everybody,
18:14for any students,
18:15you know,
18:16if you are searching,
18:18if you,
18:19you know,
18:19if you're questioning,
18:21they should accept us.
18:24They should open the door for us
18:25and should share with us.
18:27Anytime you want to ask anything about Islam,
18:30or what are you guys learning?
18:32They cannot,
18:32cannot.
18:33Cafe,
18:34haram,
18:35babi.
18:36Yeah.
18:41Amanda and Tauha,
18:42did you face this too?
18:43Did you,
18:43did your schools also segregate the students?
18:46I'm sorry,
18:46I'm American,
18:47so I have to ask.
18:48So did this happen to you as well?
18:51Yeah,
18:51in your school?
18:51Yeah,
18:52of course.
18:52I mean,
18:52the Indians and the Chinese will get into our,
18:56our own respective classes for,
18:58for moral studies and,
18:59for agama Islam,
19:01they are segregated into a different place to learn,
19:04pendidikan agama Islam.
19:06So that's,
19:07I guess that's,
19:07that's normal.
19:09But,
19:09if I can share a little bit more about,
19:12you know,
19:12after reverting,
19:14I get comments like,
19:16I mean,
19:17I don't know if this is normal,
19:20but,
19:21once I was in a mosque,
19:23and,
19:24this pakcik,
19:25he is,
19:26he knows,
19:27that I exist,
19:28but,
19:29he,
19:29at that point,
19:30he didn't know that I was a Muslim.
19:32So when he,
19:33saw me in the mosque,
19:34and he was like,
19:35oh,
19:35you're a Muslim,
19:36Islam.
19:37I said,
19:37yeah,
19:37yeah,
19:37yeah,
19:38I'm a Muslim.
19:39I'm a Muslim.
19:41And the next question is,
19:44kau dah potong ke?
19:47Oh my goodness.
19:48I understood that one.
19:50You understood, right?
19:50The hand motion.
19:51Yeah.
19:51I understood that one.
19:52And I was like,
19:53at that point,
19:54not yet,
19:55okay?
19:55So,
19:56and I told him,
19:57no.
19:57And then he said,
19:58oh,
19:59you cannot pray with us.
20:00You know,
20:01I don't know why.
20:01Maybe because he's afraid
20:02that his Salah will not get accepted
20:05or it will invalidate his Salah
20:07because maybe,
20:08you know,
20:08he's praying with someone.
20:09Because you know,
20:10the kids would normally,
20:12you know,
20:13stand behind the adults
20:14for some reason.
20:15I don't know why.
20:15So this is something to do with,
20:17I don't know,
20:17if it's a Malaysian culture thing
20:19or if it's Islam,
20:21where we segregate the kids
20:22at the back of the surah.
20:23So I think he was suggesting
20:24that you need to pray with them
20:26because probably they are
20:27not also potonget lah,
20:30I don't know.
20:33Okay.
20:34I'm just going to keep you talking
20:35for a moment here.
20:36So aside from the whole,
20:39that word
20:40that I won't repeat for myself.
20:42So how would you say,
20:44it seems like there's,
20:45you know,
20:45there's a lot of difference
20:46between this and that.
20:48Would you say there's maybe
20:49a difference also
20:50between how you learned Islam
20:52and perhaps how it's being,
20:54you know,
20:55portrayed or practiced
20:57in Malaysia culturally?
21:00Like it sounds like,
21:01okay,
21:01go to the back
21:02because you're not that yet.
21:04It doesn't sound,
21:05you know,
21:06the Islamic way.
21:08Yeah.
21:08Okay.
21:09So,
21:09for me,
21:11definitely,
21:13because I became a Muslim
21:14because I wanted
21:15to become a Muslim.
21:16I believed in the oneness of Allah.
21:18I buy the concept of,
21:20the concept of God in Islam.
21:23And I believe that Prophet Muhammad
21:25is the last messenger.
21:27Alhamdulillah.
21:28And,
21:29you know,
21:31I always go back to,
21:33to,
21:33to dalil.
21:34If you have the correct dalil,
21:36then yes,
21:37we are good to go.
21:38And,
21:38and most of the time,
21:41when I mixed around with,
21:44you know,
21:45the,
21:45the other groups
21:46and the other communities,
21:48sometimes,
21:49because,
21:51because I based off
21:54this journey
21:55on evidences
21:56in the Quran and Sunnah,
21:58when I go out there,
21:59sometimes it's not the case.
22:01And when I refute
22:02and when I say,
22:03I don't think we should
22:05do this
22:06or do that,
22:07I think we should do
22:08this instead,
22:09it becomes something
22:10very funny to them.
22:13and obviously,
22:14after that,
22:15they start labeling you
22:16with,
22:16with,
22:18with,
22:18you know,
22:20W and all that,
22:21you know,
22:21you see.
22:22But,
22:23W,
22:24W,
22:25W that rhymes
22:26wasabi.
22:26Yeah,
22:27yeah,
22:27wasabi.
22:28So,
22:29I mean,
22:29after that,
22:30you get used to
22:31all these labels,
22:32but Alhamdulillah,
22:33when you show
22:33the true teachings
22:34of Islam,
22:35you tend to influence
22:38some people also as well.
22:39So,
22:40Alhamdulillah.
22:40I hope I answered
22:41your question.
22:41Yeah,
22:41yeah,
22:41yeah,
22:42Alhamdulillah.
22:42Alhamdulillah.
22:43So,
22:43I think I,
22:44I can connect to this,
22:45um,
22:46that I've been
22:47called wasabi as well
22:49from time to time.
22:50And we kind of,
22:51um,
22:52come up with
22:53our coping mechanisms.
22:55So,
22:55one of my coping mechanisms
22:56is I kind of
22:57pretend not to know.
22:59So,
22:59what I say is,
23:00oh,
23:01I've never heard of this.
23:03Can you please
23:04provide me with dalil?
23:05I would love to learn.
23:07I'm still learning.
23:08And then they would go back
23:09and they would come back
23:10and they would be like,
23:12we didn't find it.
23:13But still do it.
23:16Okay.
23:18So,
23:19we get around it.
23:20Yeah,
23:20we have our coping mechanisms.
23:22Okay,
23:22going back to
23:23Sister Amanda,
23:24um,
23:24I think we're going to stay
23:26on the kind of
23:27misconceptions route,
23:29um,
23:30since you're
23:30the only other,
23:32um,
23:33uh,
23:34woman here.
23:35Um,
23:35so,
23:35I want to ask you,
23:37of course,
23:38Western media
23:38and even sometimes
23:40Malaysian media
23:41will portray
23:42Muslim women
23:44as oppressed
23:45or suppressed
23:46or suppressed,
23:46you know,
23:47these kinds of
23:47press.
23:48Um,
23:49but what is your
23:50opinion?
23:52Um,
23:52thank you for the
23:53wonderful question.
23:54Actually,
23:54that was one of my
23:56family's concerns
23:57that day when,
23:57um,
23:58they were having a meeting.
23:59But,
24:00hummedillah,
24:00uh,
24:01going back a bit,
24:02um,
24:03my mom afterwards,
24:05she came with me
24:05to MRM
24:06to take my Shahada.
24:07and today,
24:08hummedillah,
24:09she's in the crowd
24:10with my auntie as well,
24:11hummedillah.
24:14So,
24:15to answer your question
24:17regarding,
24:17um,
24:18women being oppressed
24:19in Islam,
24:20that's what people think,
24:21right?
24:22But that is not true at all.
24:24In fact,
24:25um,
24:26being a Muslimah,
24:28hummedillah,
24:29um,
24:30we,
24:30I found that we
24:33basically,
24:34it's basically empowerment
24:36and,
24:36uh,
24:37inner peace
24:38because it helped
24:40to restore
24:40our dignity
24:41and self-worth
24:42when we,
24:43um,
24:44wear the hijab
24:45and things like that.
24:46It's a beautiful,
24:46beautiful religion,
24:47hummedillah.
24:48And,
24:49uh,
24:50Allah always says,
24:51he always,
24:53there's so much honor
24:53given to women,
24:55like,
24:56uh,
24:56being a mother
24:57or a teacher,
24:59et cetera.
25:00So many things
25:01that,
25:01um,
25:02Allah has given to women,
25:03for example,
25:04inheritance,
25:05the right to education,
25:06the right to choose
25:07as a spouse,
25:08and many more.
25:10Even,
25:11subhanallah,
25:12it shocked me
25:13every time I learn
25:13something new
25:14about Islam,
25:15uh,
25:15to this day.
25:17Um,
25:18even before,
25:18uh,
25:20modern day
25:21feminism,
25:22or they talk about
25:23women rights,
25:24the Quran and Islam
25:26has already been
25:26speaking about this
25:2714,000 years ago.
25:29Alhamdulillah.
25:30Alhamdulillah.
25:30If I could just
25:31add on
25:32my spin
25:33as well.
25:34Um,
25:34I think
25:35one,
25:37one of the things
25:38that I saw
25:39when,
25:39when I reverted,
25:40I was still
25:40in the industry.
25:41So I was still,
25:42um,
25:42filming,
25:43and I was still
25:43doing commercial work
25:45and things like that
25:46in the fashion industry.
25:47So,
25:48I felt that
25:49when I put on
25:50the hijab,
25:51it was freedom.
25:53Um,
25:53I don't know
25:54if you're able
25:55to wrap your mind
25:56around this.
25:56I,
25:56I was quite a,
25:57um,
25:58successful model
25:59at that time.
26:00And,
26:01but I didn't own my body.
26:03And I'll,
26:03I'll kind of explain how,
26:05um,
26:06every week
26:07my agent
26:08would check in on me.
26:09Aliza,
26:09have you clipped your nails?
26:11Aliza,
26:12have you put on 500 grams
26:13because your cheeks
26:14will show on screen?
26:16Aliza,
26:16have you trimmed your hair
26:17just a little bit
26:18because your hairstyle
26:19will affect
26:20how it is on set?
26:22You know,
26:22so like,
26:23my body didn't
26:24belong to myself.
26:25My look didn't
26:26belong to myself.
26:27Nothing belonged
26:27to myself.
26:28But I felt
26:29that when I put
26:30on the hijab
26:31also it was freedom
26:32because now
26:33I didn't have
26:34to conform
26:34to other people's
26:35standard of beauty,
26:37other people's
26:38standards of what
26:39they thought
26:39I should look like,
26:40what I should be,
26:41what I should say.
26:43So now finally,
26:44as you can tell,
26:45I like to talk.
26:46So,
26:47I,
26:47my voice
26:48was coming out.
26:49Alhamdulillah,
26:50the intelligence
26:51was coming out
26:51and people were
26:52actually looking
26:53at my eyes
26:53instead of my hair
26:54and the rest of me.
26:55Alhamdulillah.
26:56Okay,
26:56getting back
26:57to our panelists.
26:58Brother Malik,
26:59a slightly different
27:00question.
27:02Were there
27:03perhaps
27:03some people,
27:05inspirational people
27:06in your life
27:07that perhaps
27:07guided you
27:08in your journey
27:09to Islam?
27:10Maybe you can
27:10choose a few
27:11that you can highlight.
27:12when I was working
27:17in the production
27:17house
27:18before I revert,
27:21I have,
27:21I have an ex,
27:22I was working
27:24with an ex,
27:25my ex boss,
27:27he,
27:29he is also
27:29a revert.
27:31So when he reverted,
27:32I looked at him,
27:33I thought to myself,
27:33hey,
27:34I found someone
27:34like me.
27:35but he was,
27:37he was some sort
27:38of like a role model
27:39that I look up to
27:40and I said,
27:41probably one day
27:42I would want
27:42to be like him too.
27:43I would like
27:44to learn Islam
27:45and of course,
27:48and also,
27:49he,
27:50he also used
27:51to attend
27:51classes at Al-Qadim
27:53with Sheikh Hussein
27:54and I would,
27:56this,
27:56this,
27:57nothing happened
27:58without a reason.
27:59There's no coincidence.
28:01So when I was
28:01working there
28:02in the production house,
28:03so a lot of times
28:04we'll have,
28:05we have to go out
28:05filming and when
28:07there's got to do
28:07something with
28:08a religious matter,
28:10the producers
28:11will go and
28:12interview Sheikh Hussein.
28:14So one time
28:15I followed him
28:16for the interview
28:17but I did not
28:18go out of the car,
28:19I was just
28:20sleeping in the car,
28:21I was tired,
28:23but I some sort
28:23like know the way
28:24from the office
28:26to Al-Qadim.
28:28So the day
28:30that I wanted
28:31to learn about
28:32Islam before
28:33I revert,
28:34I just jumped
28:34into the car,
28:35started the engine
28:36and just drove
28:37to Al-Qadim
28:38without the help
28:39of Google Maps
28:40or nothing.
28:41And then when
28:42I reached there,
28:42I was a bit early,
28:44about 10 something,
28:45I think,
28:45because the class
28:46usually starts at 11.
28:47So 10 something,
28:4810.30,
28:49I was sitting around
28:50looking,
28:50how come there's
28:51no one here?
28:51Is that really a class?
28:53And I saw Sheikh Hussein
28:54coming up from the room
28:56and say,
28:56okay,
28:56okay,
28:57I met him,
28:59okay,
28:59so I asked him
29:00what time the class
29:01starts,
29:01he said 11,
29:02he just hang out,
29:03okay.
29:04So when I went
29:05into the class,
29:06I was looking around,
29:06I was asking myself,
29:07am I really doing
29:08the right thing?
29:09I was very afraid,
29:11very,
29:11very afraid.
29:13But somehow,
29:15I sat
29:16and I waited
29:17and I attended
29:18the class
29:19and then another Sunday
29:20I went again
29:20and again
29:21and then I revert
29:23after that.
29:23so there's two
29:26person,
29:27which is my boss
29:27and of course
29:28Sheikh Hussein
29:29that somehow
29:32role model guided me.
29:35Another person
29:36is my uncle
29:37actually.
29:38He is also
29:39actually a revert
29:40but he does not
29:41show it
29:41because of
29:43our family
29:43and we are
29:45all strong Buddhists
29:45but he lived
29:47his life
29:47just like any Chinese
29:49but when he
29:50passed away,
29:52his last wish
29:52was
29:53he wants to be
29:55buried
29:55the Muslim way
29:56and he had
29:58a very colorful
29:59past.
30:00He was
30:00gang member
30:01of secret society
30:02and you know
30:03but
30:04he,
30:06no matter,
30:07I mean,
30:07during his lifetime
30:08he did not talk
30:09about Islam
30:10at all to me
30:11but when he died
30:13he showed it
30:15and he told me
30:16please make sure
30:17to bury me
30:18the Muslim way.
30:20so he's my uncle,
30:23my ex-boss
30:24and of course
30:24Ustaz Sheikh Hussein Yee.
30:26MashaAllah,
30:27MashaAllah.
30:27How about
30:28Brother Dolha
30:29and Sister Amanda?
30:30Is there someone
30:31that perhaps
30:32impacted you
30:33in the beginning
30:33and helped you
30:34along with your journey?
30:36I can go first.
30:38Alhamdulillah
30:39there's too many
30:40to say actually
30:41but
30:41the one
30:42that I wish
30:43to speak about today
30:44is Ustazah Maryan.
30:45She's also
30:46a revert
30:47Chinese-Malaysian.
30:48She just left
30:49after Zohar prayer today
30:50but
30:51through my classes
30:53with her
30:53and
30:54all the other
30:56sisters at Al-Qadim,
30:58Alhamdulillah,
30:58they really showed me
30:59the true
31:00embodiment
31:01of what Islam
31:02is supposed to be
31:03which means
31:04as reverts
31:05sometimes you get
31:06a little like
31:07paper cuts
31:08here and there
31:09you know like
31:09comments that
31:11how to say
31:13they are not
31:14so direct
31:15but
31:16they do hurt
31:16sometimes
31:17and it will
31:18pile up.
31:19Alhamdulillah
31:19she taught me
31:19that to always
31:21respond the
31:22negative
31:22with something
31:23that is positive
31:24for example
31:25like
31:26maybe
31:27someone has
31:27backbitten you
31:29or slandered you
31:30but
31:30still smile at them
31:32you know
31:34give them a gift
31:34maybe to soften
31:35your heart
31:36things like that
31:37and she also
31:38helped me
31:39mend my relationship
31:41with my family
31:41how like
31:42Sheikh Awe says
31:44that Islam
31:44is simple
31:45we always go out
31:46for family dinners
31:47Alhamdulillah
31:48halal places
31:49and since my auntie
31:50is a Buddhist
31:50we choose places
31:52that has vegetarian
31:53options also
31:54so Alhamdulillah
31:55Mashallah
31:56Mashallah
31:57Marianne is a part
31:58of my journey
31:59too I'll say it
32:00in a moment
32:00Brother Dalha
32:01For me
32:03Alhamdulillah
32:03there's definitely
32:04this one person
32:05and a whole lot
32:06of them
32:06it is our
32:07none other than
32:09our Sheikh Hossein Yi
32:10and the Jemaah
32:11of Al-Qadim
32:12Alhamdulillah
32:12when I became a Muslim
32:14the next day
32:14they introduced me
32:15to Al-Qadim
32:16and Alhamdulillah
32:16I learned so much
32:19of adab
32:19akhlaq
32:20and deen
32:21in Al-Qadim
32:21and Alhamdulillah
32:22until today
32:23I go there
32:24I try my best
32:24and
32:25yep
32:26it's definitely
32:27them
32:27the brothers
32:28in Al-Qadim
32:28who
32:29constantly guide you
32:30teach you
32:31advise you
32:32and correct you
32:33and Alhamdulillah
32:34for that
32:34Alhamdulillah
32:36so for me
32:37after my
32:38unexpected
32:39Shahada
32:39which was
32:40really unexpected
32:41I was actually
32:42supposed to
32:43meet up
32:43with a group
32:43of sisters
32:44who some
32:44of them
32:45are here
32:45today
32:46and I was
32:47supposed to
32:47follow them
32:48around to
32:49figure out
32:49if I could
32:49be a Muslim
32:50or not
32:50I was like
32:51I'm gonna
32:51follow this
32:52woman from
32:525am
32:53in Fruga
32:53how does
32:54she put
32:54on her
32:54hijab
32:55it takes
32:55so long
32:55right
32:55how does
32:56she like
32:57pray
32:57five times
32:58a day
32:58it's so
32:58disruptive
32:59to the
32:59day
33:00right
33:00so how
33:01am I
33:01supposed
33:01to figure
33:02this out
33:02if I don't
33:02follow someone
33:03around
33:03so I
33:04actually
33:04was supposed
33:04to meet
33:05up with
33:05someone
33:05there
33:05and it
33:06was
33:06sister
33:07Annis
33:07who is
33:08there
33:08now
33:08and we
33:09were going
33:10to lunch
33:10with sister
33:11Grace
33:11who is
33:12there
33:12sister
33:13Marianne
33:14who is
33:14gone
33:14and also
33:14sister
33:15Elizabeth
33:15and these
33:17were the
33:17sisters
33:17who taught
33:18me
33:19okay
33:19and Zyla
33:20Zyla
33:21was the
33:21first one
33:22that taught
33:22me to
33:22pray
33:23the very
33:23first
33:23prayer
33:24and I'm
33:24praying
33:24like this
33:25okay
33:25whatever
33:26she's
33:26doing
33:26I'm
33:27doing
33:27what
33:27is she
33:28doing
33:28so I'm
33:29praying
33:29looking to
33:30my
33:30side
33:31then the
33:31second
33:32group
33:32was
33:32with
33:32this
33:33group
33:33and we're
33:33still friends
33:34to this
33:34day
33:34and I'm
33:35very
33:35honored
33:37and indebted
33:37to them
33:38for you
33:39know
33:39holding my
33:40hand along
33:40the way
33:41mashallah
33:41and of
33:41course the
33:42rest of
33:42the Al-Qadim
33:43community
33:43as well
33:44because Al-Qadim
33:45really became
33:45my second
33:46home and I
33:46think much
33:47like ours
33:48as well
33:49mashallah
33:49okay so
33:50now we are
33:51at the end
33:52of our
33:52panel and I
33:53would love
33:53for each
33:54of us
33:54to say
33:55perhaps
33:55some final
33:56words
33:57particularly
33:58on how
33:59you think
34:00the revert
34:02journey
34:02can perhaps
34:03add to
34:04the narrative
34:05of uniting
34:06Malaysia
34:06we'll start
34:10with sister
34:10Amanda
34:10we'll go
34:11down the
34:11line
34:11one
34:13advice
34:14I say
34:14that I
34:14would give
34:15is that
34:16to surround
34:17yourself
34:17with good
34:18friends
34:19because
34:19who you
34:20surround
34:20yourself
34:20with
34:21you will
34:23eventually
34:24become them
34:25something like
34:26that
34:26that was
34:26a
34:26hadith
34:27if I'm
34:27not
34:27mistaken
34:27and
34:28the
34:31sisters
34:31at Al-Qadim
34:32Alhamdulillah
34:33they have
34:34really helped
34:34create this
34:36cycle of
34:37the elder
34:38sisters
34:38will help
34:39mentor
34:39the younger
34:40sisters
34:40and so
34:41on and
34:41so forth
34:42we should
34:43always
34:44us as
34:44humans
34:45we are
34:45more
34:46social
34:46creatures
34:47we are
34:47not meant
34:48to do
34:48things
34:48alone
34:49so
34:50find
34:50your
34:50community
34:51find
34:52your
34:52support
34:52and
34:53through
34:54them
34:55insha'Allah
34:55you can
34:56learn
34:56to have
34:58better
34:58akhlaq
34:59better
34:59manners
35:00and
35:01as
35:02one of
35:02my
35:02sister
35:03Angeline
35:03she always
35:04says
35:04if I
35:05help
35:05you
35:05Allah
35:06will
35:06help
35:06me
35:06Alhamdulillah
35:07I
35:09ask
35:10if we
35:14seek
35:15for it
35:15we
35:15definitely
35:16will
35:17get
35:17the
35:17answer
35:18and
35:19if
35:22during
35:23our
35:23darkest
35:23time
35:24when we
35:25are sad
35:26or
35:27when we
35:28are in
35:28trouble
35:29I guess
35:30the best
35:31is to
35:31pray
35:31even
35:33even if
35:34it's
35:34just
35:34one
35:34raka'at
35:35even
35:36if
35:36it's
35:36just
35:36to
35:37recite
35:37the
35:37surah
35:37al-fatihah
35:38or
35:39even
35:39just
35:40bismillahirrahmanirrahim
35:42because
35:43at the end
35:44of the day
35:45why we
35:47choose
35:47Islam
35:47because
35:48we
35:48know
35:48how
35:49we
35:50are
35:50going
35:50to
35:50be
35:50buried
35:50we
35:52know
35:52our
35:53ending
35:53and
35:55we
35:55know
35:55for a
35:56fact
35:56everything
35:58happens
35:58for a
35:58reason
35:59and
35:59it's
35:59all
36:00written
36:00and
36:02no
36:03matter
36:03what
36:03we
36:04need
36:04to
36:05cling
36:05on
36:05to
36:05Allah
36:06for
36:07only
36:08him
36:08that
36:10will
36:10be
36:10able
36:11to
36:11guide
36:11us
36:11and
36:12help
36:12us
36:12insha
36:13Allah
36:13yeah
36:14okay
36:15so
36:16basically
36:17you know
36:18recently
36:18in day
36:19one
36:19rakyat
36:20I think
36:21the speaker
36:22actually
36:23warned
36:23some
36:23of the
36:24politicians
36:24not to
36:25call
36:25each other
36:25kafirs
36:26and
36:27I can
36:28agree
36:28to that
36:28I hope
36:29sometimes
36:29that the
36:30born
36:30Muslims
36:30can
36:31control
36:31what
36:32they
36:32say
36:32and
36:32not
36:32call
36:33each
36:33other
36:33kafirs
36:33because
36:33it's
36:34kind
36:34of
36:34like
36:35a
36:35turn
36:35off
36:35for
36:36the
36:36not
36:36yet
36:37Muslims
36:37you
36:37know
36:37when
36:37they
36:37hear
36:38that
36:38they
36:38are
36:38kafirs
36:39because
36:39they
36:39take
36:39that
36:39very
36:40personal
36:41and
36:42and
36:44a few
36:44years
36:45ago
36:45it was
36:46it was
36:47Ramadan
36:47you know
36:47my mother
36:48was actually

36:56she asked
36:57if you
36:57have

36:58and
36:59the owner
37:00said
37:00no
37:00we don't
37:00have
37:00and
37:02few
37:02minutes
37:02after that
37:03she
37:03caught
