For Alana Dunsmore, a Scottish revert to Islam, the journey of faith comes with a profound sense of responsibility.

Having grown up exposed to years of negative portrayals of Muslims in Western media, she understands firsthand why many in the West carry misconceptions about Islam.

But when she discovered the true beauty of Islam in Malaysia through friendships, the Quran, the hadith, and the mosque, she realized how far removed those stereotypes were from reality.

As someone who has 'lived both sides', Alana now sees her role as a bridge-builder, using her voice to foster empathy, compassion, and understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims.

00:00suddenly so bad for my husband who's sitting here in Malaysia who is only visiting Scotland twice
00:07and he may well get hit he may well get that back in Scotland and why he never did anything wrong
00:15I'm assuming it's very difficult for a Muslim here sitting in Malaysia to understand what did
00:23I do so wrong that people in the west assume the worst of me yeah and it just occurred to me the other day
00:34that as a river coming from Scotland okay I've been exposed to this negative publicity my whole
00:42life about Muslims are this Muslims are this and when I like about the true Islam which was here in
00:51Malaysia we find us on friends reading the Quran reading the hadith going to mosque that's not what
00:59I was exposed to for 19 years of my life prior to learning about the true Islam so I feel a huge
01:09responsibility and I'm willing to take on the challenge of trying to bridge that gap because
01:17a revert like myself I have seen both sides not only have I seen it I've lived both sides I've lived a
01:26different lifestyle in the past and I have empathy for both sides because in the west they're getting
01:34taught somewhat that this is true about Muslims and it's not and there needs to be someone to try and
01:44bridge that gap that can almost empathize with these people who are misguided who don't fully
01:50understand so PX reverse pin trying to bridge that gap but going back to my first point it just occurred
01:59to me recently like I just felt suddenly so bad for my husband who's sitting here Malaysia who is only
02:08visiting Scotland twice and he may well get hit he may well get that back in Scotland and why he never
02:16did anything wrong so actually recently I asked my husband to watch this documentary called the London
02:23bombings on Netflix to actually try and understand hey why would I ever bet hey as a Muslim in the UK
02:30Naomi wanted him to watch that to understand how we can both bridge a gap we can't just fight hate with
02:39more hate that's never gonna work so the only way that we can fight and try to bridge that gap between
02:48this misunderstanding the misjudgment is only by compassion and empathy so I I hope that he watched that
02:56and understood the huge role that he has to play also which he never asked for he's just a born Muslim
03:04mind in his business you know a great lifestyle how do they love so yeah I would urge you all this is a
03:12a chilling documentary London bonings on Netflix but just to try and understand why were people in the
03:21West and in the UK specifically for this why would they think that way about us Muslims we're just trying
03:27to have this beautiful lifestyle that that the Quran teaches us to be and yeah maybe then we can start
03:37with the empathy and compassion and understanding the mindset of others and then inshallah we can bridge
03:43that gap together I mean
03:44you
