00:00An analyst has described the opposition's Malay unity narrative as more rhetoric than
00:06reality, saying the latest clash between Bersatu President Muhyiddin Yassin and Dr. Mahathir
00:11Muhammad over the alleged misappropriation of party funds has exposed deep fault lines
00:17in the agenda.
00:19Mazlan Ali of University Technology Malaysia said the public fallout showed that key Malay
00:23political figures were unable to work together despite Mahathir's push for a so-called
00:29big Malay umbrella.
00:31Mazlan also criticized Mahathir's version of Malay unity for excluding Malays aligned
00:36with UMNO, PKR and AMANA, adding that Malay unity agenda needs to include everyone, not
00:42just certain parties.
00:43Meanwhile, Akademi Nusantara's Azmi Hassan questioned the timing of the dispute, saying
00:49Perikatan National was entering a critical phase with the 16th general election less than
00:53two years away.
00:56He warned that the dispute could confuse Malay voters as Mahathir was using Muhyiddin's
01:01PN as a vehicle to push his Malay unity message.
01:05The analysts were commenting on a call by Bersatu Information Chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz for
01:10a closed-door meeting between Muhyiddin and Mahathir to resolve the dispute.
