In Ecuador, Indigenous communities have denounced the media criminalization of their protests and ancestral knowledge, accusing President Daniel Noboa’s government of deploying a repressive strategy to silence dissent and legitimize state violence. Contrary to the official narrative of alleged “kidnapping and torture” of soldiers, teleSUR obtained exclusive testimonies from military personnel confirming they were treated with respect and their physical integrity preserved—challenging a corporate disinformation campaign in favor of Noboa. The Indigenous peoples asserted their jurisdictional rights, recognized under Ecuadorian law, following a violent military incursion in Cotacachi that resulted in the death of Quichua leader Efraín Fueres. In accordance with their customs, the communities held and subjected 13 soldiers to a community trial—an act of Indigenous justice that ancestral leaders defended as a legitimate institutional response to state impunity.
