00:00Human rights lawyer, Barrister Jefferson Muaharen has condemned and berated the federal government of Nigeria under the presidency of Bola Ahmed Tanubu, for arresting, detaining and remanding to Kuja prison, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the lawyer to the detained Biafra Republic agitation leader, Mazi Namdi Kano after Aloy Ejimakor was seen joining the Free Namdi Kano protest in Abuja on Monday, according to the human rights lawyer who have remarkable experience.
00:30In fighting against police extrajudicial killing, one notable exception is that a lawyer enjoys less freedom than others to speak publicly about his or her own cases, but not when it involves solidarity marches and protests for his client.
00:44The conducts of lawyers and the limit of their professional duties is the kennel of the alarming accusation by the presidency yesterday against the lawyer of Mr. Namdi Kano and his subsequent arrest by the police for his presence at a scene in Abuja, where protesters were marching peacefully demanding the release of Mr. Kano.
01:02The statement from the presidency and the police action is obviously a culmination of undisguised hostility towards the lawyer for having the temerity to represent a person the government have since prosecuted and convicted in the court of public opinions.
01:17Ordinarily, a lawyer's bail application for alleged crime of illegal protest won't be refused.
01:23The refusal is concerning and turning a simple matter into a political case of vendetta and persecution.
01:30Bayo Onanuga, the special advisor to the president on information and strategy had on Monday tweeted while the Free Namdi Kano protest was ongoing,
01:38that, I spotted, I spotted a lawyer, one of Namdi Kano's lawyers, among the small group of protesters mobilized in Abuja by Omiyele Sawari,
01:48I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest,
01:54as a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of subjudice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court,
02:02The prosecution has concluded its case, and it is now incumbent upon Mr. Ejimakor and the other lawyers to mount a strong defense for Kano,
02:11rather than focusing on preparing a strong case, Mr. Ejimakor has resorted to extra-legal tactics,
02:18joining a career anarchist, to influence the process.
02:21Meanwhile, few hours ago, the organizer of the protest and the founder of Sahara Reporter's news media,
02:28Omiyele Sawari stated via his social media accounts that,
02:32We have been informed that plans are allegedly in place at Kuja Prison to harm Namdi Kano's younger brother,
02:39Fineboy and Aloy Ejimakor, his special counsel, inside Kuja Prison by special warders assigned by the Asawaju bowler Ahmed Tanubu.
02:48Bayo Onanuga in the tweet demanded a snaction against barrister Aloy Ejimakor for joining the protest,
02:54calling for the release of his client, Namdi Kano.
02:59Accordingly, Bayo Onanuga said,
03:01I spotted Aloy Ejimakor, one of Namdi Kano's lawyers,
03:05among the small group of protesters mobilized in Abuja by Omiyele Sawari.
03:10I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest.
03:16As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of subjudice,
03:20particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court.
03:24The prosecution has concluded its case, and it is now incumbent upon Mr. Ejimakor and the other lawyers to mount a strong defense for Kano.
03:35Rather than focusing on preparing a strong case,
03:38Mr. Ejimakor has resorted to extra-legal tactics,
03:42joining a career anarchist, to influence the process.
03:45Ejimakor's action questions his adherence to professional ethics.
03:49Legal authorities should consider appropriate sanctions for the unethical conduct of the bearded lawyer.
03:56Reacting, Barrister Jefferson O'Haren in a statement signed and made available on Tuesday.
04:02Said,
04:03Lawyers generally enjoy constitutional protection for two kinds of speech.
04:07Like everyone else, though with at least two important exceptions, lawyers can criticize government,
04:14including the courts and judges, and speak about public issues,
04:18subject to such narrow limitations professional rules of practice will permit.
04:23One notable exception, is that a lawyer enjoys less freedom than others to speak publicly about his or her own cases.
04:30But not when it involves solidarity marches and protests for his client.
04:35The conducts of lawyers and the limit of their professional duties is the kennel of the alarming accusation by the presidency yesterday
04:42against the lawyer of Mr. Namdi Kano and his subsequent arrest by the police for his presence at a scene in Abuja,
04:49where protesters were marching peacefully demanding the release of Mr. Kano.
04:53The statement from the presidency and the police action is obviously a culmination of undisguised hostility
05:00towards the lawyer for having the temerity to represent a person the government have since prosecuted and convicted
05:06in the court of public opinions.
05:09This is a deeply concerning assault on our adversarial legal system and the rights to legal representations.
05:16No matter the severity of the allegations or the repugnancy of the case,
05:20an accused person remains innocent until the courts rule otherwise.
05:24Any lawyer who knows his onions on his suya knows that there's no good or bad case,
05:29until the final determination of the case.
05:33Thus, the first great duty of an advocate or lawyer is to reckon or do everything legally possible in the interests of his client.
05:41In the discharge of his professional duties,
05:43a lawyer knows but one person in the whole of the world and that person is his client,
05:48even if it requires encouraging protests or protesters who are in sympathy with his client's interests
05:54or speaking to the press to clarify the allegations against his client.
05:59This is similar in reality and desperation in capital offence cases.
06:03When government determinately provide the judge, prosecutor,
06:07and free turncoat indolent defence counsels for accused persons,
06:11the government is determined to waste.
06:13A trinity of conspiracy and collusion against indigent and poor citizens.
06:18To Bayo Onanuga and other moral, ethics schizophrenics,
06:22a lawyer's representation of a client including representation by appointment,
06:27does not constitute an endorsement of his client's political, economic, social, or moral views.
06:34Arresting lawyers or making moral judgments about lawyers because of the identity of their clients
06:39will inevitably impede access to justice and the availability of lawyers for political dissents
06:44in the coming days, Barrister Jefferson O'Haren stated.
06:48The remanded Nnamdi Karnu lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor in a tweet on Tuesday, said,
06:54I am safe and sound but still under custody at Kuja Prison.
06:58The magistrate refused to listen to our submissions.
07:02He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way.
07:05For context, keep in mind that they bypassed several magistrate courts in town
07:10and headed to this one in Kuja.
07:13On Monday, Aloy Ejimakor had tweeted that,
07:16We've just been arrested.
07:18Myself, Prince Emanuel and others.
07:21We are at FCT Command Sid.
07:24Myself, Fineboy and others.
07:26Number 1 Zarya Street, Gariki 2, Abuja.
07:30Earlier on Monday, Ejimakor also tweeted that,
07:33I'm in front of Transcorp Hilton with a mammoth crowd that gathered for Marzi Nnamdi Karnu
07:39October 20th and the police just exploded tear gas.
07:43My eyes and throat hurt.
07:45They're scattering everywhere.
07:46Omiyele Sawari on Tuesday stated that,
07:49I just learned that illegal IGP Kanyode Egbetokan has sent Nnamdi Karnu's brother and lawyer,
07:56Aloy Ejimakor, and 11 others all the way to Kuja Magistrate Court
08:00to get them remanded in prison at all costs.
08:03Earlier on Monday, Omiyele Sawari said,
08:07The despicable and illegal Inspector General of Police,
08:10Karyode Egbetokan,
08:12has ordered the arrest and detention of 13 peaceful protesters
08:15who participated in today's free Nnamdi Karnu demonstration in Abuja.
08:20Among those detained are Nnamdi Karnu's lead lawyer,
08:23Aloy Ejimakor, Nnamdi Karnu's brother,
08:27Fineboy Karnu,
08:28Barrister Akere,
08:29and 10 others whose only,
08:31Crime,
08:32was exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest.
08:36Shockingly,
08:37the protesters have been taken to the notorious SARS Abattoir Detention and Torture Facility in Abuja,
08:43a place long associated with human rights abuses,
08:46unlawful detentions,
08:48and unspeakable cruelty.
08:50Their only offense was standing for justice and freedom and protesting peacefully.
08:54In another post on Monday,
08:57Omiyele Sawari said,
08:58We relocated to the FCT Police Command today to ensure the unconditional release of Nnamdi Karnu's brother,
09:05Fineboy,
09:06his lawyer,
09:07Barrister Aloy Ejimakor,
09:09and 11 others who were arrested and tortured for participating in Free Nnamdi Karnu's peaceful protest.
09:15While we were there,
09:16we commenced another phase of our protest,
09:19and the police responded by attacking us right in front of the command.
09:23We were informed that the illegal inspector general of police,
09:26Ka Yode Egbetokan,
09:28requested that they be
09:29interviewed,
09:30and possibly detained.
09:32This will not stand.
09:33On Tuesday evening,
09:35Omiyele Sawari stated in a statement that,
09:38Lawyers representing Barrister Aloy Ejimakor and his brother,
09:42Emanuel,
09:43Fineboy,
09:44Karnu,
09:44filed a bail application today at the Federal High Court in Abuja following their unlawful arrest during the Free Nnamdi Karnu protest.
09:53However,
09:54in a blatant display of bad faith,
09:56police prosecutors reportedly refused to accept service of the court summons delivered by court bailiffs,
10:01an intentional move to frustrate and delay the bail process.
10:06Today,
10:07we also found out they were so desperate that they thought,
10:10Aloy,
10:11for Aliyu.
10:12Today,
10:13we proceeded to the Kuja Magistrate Court,
10:15where the Nigeria police force under the leadership of a legal IGP Kiyode Egbetokan,
10:21hastily arraigned Nnamdi Karnu's lead counsel,
10:24Aloy Ejimakor,
10:25his brother,
10:26Fineboy,
10:27and 11 others.
10:29However,
10:29the Magistrate had already remanded them in Kuja Prison until Friday,
10:34before their attorneys arrived at the Magistrate's Court.
10:43Nigeria Police Force,
10:45NPF under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police,
10:49IGP Kiyode Egbetokan,
10:51who is currently in the United States,
10:54U.S.,
10:54attending the International Association of Chiefs of Police,
10:58IACP Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado,
11:02USA,
11:03alongside other senior police officers,
11:05has warned troublemakers to resist the temptation of hijacking the free Nnamdi Karnu protest slated to hold today across the West Africa country by the organizers,
11:15and other group of Nigerians to demand the release of the detained Biafra Republic agitation leader,
11:21Mazi Nnamdi Karnu,
11:23Also,
11:24the NPF reminded the organizers and the protesters to respect the federal high court order that restricted them from staging the protest in certain areas in Abuja,
11:33such areas which included Aso Rock Villa and its environs,
11:37the National Assembly Complex,
11:39Force Headquarters,
11:41the Court of Appeal,
11:42Eagle Square and Shehushigari Way,
11:44while assuring the protesters of protection.
11:46The NPF in a statement issued and made available by the force spokesperson,
11:52Benjamin Hundeyen,
11:54indicated that,
11:55the Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public peace in accordance with constitutional provisions.
12:05This follows the subsisting order of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division,
12:09given on the 17th of October 2025,
12:13by Honorable Justice M. G. Umar,
12:16in suit number FHC,
12:17ABJ,
12:18CS,
12:192202-2025,
12:23Federal Republic of Nigeria
12:25versus Omayene Sawari and four others.
12:28The order restrains the respondents and any other persons or groups acting under their instruction from staging protests within and around Aso Rock Villa and its environs,
12:38the National Assembly Complex,
12:40Force Headquarters,
12:42the Court of Appeal,
12:43Eagle Square and
12:44Shehushigari Way.
12:46In deference to the authority of the court and in line with the constitutional mandate of the police to enforce law and order,
12:52the force hereby calls on all groups, whether in support of or opposed to the ongoing agitation for the release of Mazi Namdi Kano,
13:01to adhere strictly to the provisions of the court order.
13:04The directive remains binding and enforceable pending further judicial proceedings.
13:09The Nigeria Police Force recognizes and respects the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and expression.
13:16However, such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law,
13:21particularly where public safety, national security, and the rights of other citizens are concerned.
13:28The court's intervention is therefore a safeguard, not a suppression, of constitutional freedoms.
13:34Accordingly, all intending protesters and counter-protest groups are strongly advised to avoid restricted areas and to refrain from any act capable of provoking confrontation or disturbing public order.
13:46The force will ensure the free flow of traffic, protection of lives and property, and security of all law-abiding citizens.
13:55Any person or group that uses protests as cover to incite violence, carry or use offensive weapons,
14:02vandalize public or private property, kidnap, or engage in acts likely to cause loss of life or serious injury will be dealt with decisively.
14:10Offenders will be arrested, subjected to full investigation, and prosecuted under relevant criminal laws,
14:18including laws relating to public order, violent conduct and terrorism where applicable.
14:24Those who incite others via social media or other platforms should note that digital evidence will be used in investigations and prosecutions.
14:32The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kar-Yode Adeolu Egbetokan, has directed the FCT Commissioner of Police and relevant operational commands
14:43to ensure strict enforcement of the court's order, maintain visible and strategic deployments across vulnerable locations,
14:50and ensure the safety of residents and lawful activities in the FCT.
14:55All organizers and participants are therefore advised to, avoid the restricted areas specified by the court,
15:02refrain from carrying weapons, engaging in provocative conduct, or encouraging others to breach the law,
15:09and channel grievances through the courts and other lawful avenues rather than the streets.
15:15The Nigeria Police Force assures law-abiding Nigerians that adequate security arrangements have been made to protect lives and property.
15:23Non-participants should go about their lawful businesses without fear.
15:28Anyone found to be in breach of the court's order or in contempt of the law will be arrested and prosecuted.
15:35We have reported that the founder of Sahara Reporters News Media and the organizer of the Free Namdi Karno protest,
15:42Omiyele Sawari has refuted and debunked the reports circulating in some sections of the media
15:47that the federal high court sitting in Abuja has stopped the upcoming Monday-October 20 mass protest organized
15:54to demand the release of the detained Biafra Republic agitation leader,
15:59Mazi Namdi Karno, saying,
16:01The media report is false and a calculated attempt to distract members of the public from coming out to join the protest,
16:08adding,
16:08Namdi Karno is so sick that the people must come out now to set him free.
16:13The sickness as alleged by Omiyele Sawari apparently challenged the medical report issued by the Nigerian Medical Association,
16:22NMA who had submitted its panel report before the trial court on Thursday that Namdi Karno is fit to face trial,
16:29that,
16:30The sickness is not life-threatening,
16:31but,
16:33Punch newspaper reporter at the court on Thursday reported that it was the Department of State Services,
16:38DSS lawyer,
16:40who happened to be one of the parties in the dispute that presented the NMA medical report before the court,
16:46We are yet to ascertain the independency,
16:49fairness,
16:49objectivity,
16:50accuracy and transparency of the Nigerian Medical Association,
16:55NMA in conducting the medical examination.
16:57We have reported that Justice Mohamed Gaba Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday
17:04apparently rejected the plans by the Inspector General of Police,
17:08IGP Kar Yode Egbetokan,
17:10to stop the upcoming Monday,
17:12October 20th plan mass protests by Nigerians to demand the release of the detained Biafra Republic agitation leader,
17:20Mazin Amdi Karno,
17:21but,
17:22according to the organizer of the protest,
17:24Omiyele Saware,
17:26after the judge initially declined to grant the Nigeria police force an ex-party motion to stop the planned protest in the open court,
17:34the,
17:34Federal High Court judge,
17:36Justice Umar reportedly granted the motion in chambers,
17:40imposing a ban on protests at Aso Rock Villa,
17:43National Assembly,
17:44or Unity Fountain in Abuja,
17:46we await a certified true copy of the order,
17:49which our lawyers will review,
17:51the protest remains unstoppable,
17:53while this is ongoing,
17:54the United States,
17:55U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has warned America citizens to be far from the protest areas and limit their movements in the Nigeria capital city,
18:05Abuja,
18:06saying,
18:06the planned protest may lead to disruptions and violence.
18:09We had also reported that the Nigerian army authority has issued a statement,
18:15denying threat messages issued against members of the public ahead of the planned mass protests slated for October 20,
18:222025 to demand for the release and freedom of the detained Biafra Republic agitation leader,
18:28Marzi Namdi Kanu,
18:30just as the organizer and chief campaigner,
18:33Omiyele Saware,
18:34the publisher of Sahara Reporters News Media met to seek understanding with the former president of Nigeria,
18:40Goodluck Abele Jonathan,
18:42who,
18:42according to Saware,
18:44promised to visit President Bola Ahmed Talubu to discuss the issue with him.
18:48Founder of Sahara Reporters News Media and the organizer of the free Namdi Kanu protest,
19:01Omiyele Saware has refuted and debunked the reports circulating in some sections of the media
19:06that the federal high court sitting in Abuja has stopped the upcoming Monday,
19:11October 20 mass protest organized to demand the release of the detained Biafra Republic agitation leader,
19:18Marzi Namdi Kanu,
19:20saying,
19:20the media report is false and a calculated attempt to distract members of the public from coming out to join the protest,
19:27adding,
19:28Namdi Kanu is so sick that the people must come out now to set him free.
19:32The sickness as alleged by Omiyele Saware apparently challenged the medical report issued by the Nigerian Medical Association,
19:41NMA who had submitted its panel report before the trial court on Thursday that Namdi Kanu is fit to face trial,
19:48that,
19:49the sickness is not life-threatening,
19:51but,
19:52Punch newspaper reporter at the court on Thursday reported that it was the Department of State Services,
19:57PSS lawyer,
19:58who happened to be one of the parties in the dispute that presented the NMA medical report before the court,
20:05we are yet to ascertain the independency,
20:08fairness,
20:08objectivity,
20:10accuracy and transparency of the Nigerian Medical Association,
20:14NMA in conducting the medical examination.
20:16In a statement on Saturday,
20:19Omiyele Saware said,
20:21the Federal High Court in Abuja has not stopped the proposed free Namdi Kanu no protests slated for Monday,
20:27October 20,
20:282025.
20:30Contrary to the misleading claims being circulated by police lawyers and sections of the media,
20:35no order was granted restraining citizens from exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
20:42Justice Umar of the Federal High Court declined to issue any ex-party order sought by the police to halt the nationwide protest altogether.
20:50What exists is a purported court order obtained in chambers by lawyers of the police,
20:56which has not been served on anyone asking that protesters not protest at Aso Rock Villa,
21:02National Assembly,
21:03Eagle Square,
21:04and a certain Shehushigari Way,
21:06the latest false claims designed to confuse the public and discourage participation.
21:11The protest date is sacrosanct.
21:14The movement is unstoppable.
21:15In another statement,
21:17Omiyele Saware said,
21:19I was deeply involved in the struggle for the validation of the June 12th election,
21:24and I remember vividly how the system operated back then,
21:27how they weaponized the judiciary to buy time,
21:30to deceive the public,
21:31and to justify injustice.
21:34They kept saying,
21:35Abiola's case is in court,
21:37using that as a shield for tyranny,
21:39until they eventually killed him a day before his,
21:42supposed,
21:43release.
21:43It was a well-orchestrated tragedy disguised as legal processes.
21:48Today,
21:49I see the same script being replayed with Marzi Namdi Karno,
21:53the same manipulation,
21:54the same excuses,
21:56fake narrators,
21:57fake protesters,
21:58the same abuse of process.
22:00The language has not changed.
22:03Only the victims have.
22:04History is repeating itself before our eyes.
22:08And just as we fought to expose the truth then,
22:10we must do so now,
22:12before it's too late.
22:14The Namdi Karno I saw in court on October 16th is very ill.
22:18We must rescue him before another citizen is sacrificed to the bloodthirsty Nigerian elite club.
22:24Punch newspaper had during the week reported that the,
22:28Nigerian Medical Association on Thursday informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that the illness of the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra,
22:36Namdi Karno,
22:38is not life-threatening.
22:40The medical panel set up by the NMA president said it had concluded the health assessment ordered by the court on the IPOB leader and found that Karno is fit to stand trial.
22:50About two weeks ago,
22:52the trial judge,
22:54Justice James Omatosho,
22:55directed the association to independently assess Karno's health status following conflicting medical reports presented by the defense and the prosecution.
23:05While DSS counsel,
23:07Mr. Awamalo Adigbo-Egba,
23:09S.A.N.,
23:10maintained that Karno's health could be adequately managed at the DSS medical facility,
23:15the defense counsel,
23:17Mr. Onyechi Ikpizu,
23:18S.A.N.,
23:19insisted that his client's health was deteriorating and that he should be taken to the national hospital for proper care.
23:26This prompted Justice Omatosho to order the NMA to conduct an independent medical examination to determine,
23:33among other things,
23:34whether the DSS medical facility could cater to Karno's needs or if he should be transferred to the national hospital as requested by the defense.
23:42The report is also expected to determine whether Karno is fit to stand trial.
23:48However,
23:49at the previous sitting,
23:50Omatosho had to adjourn for October 16th,
23:53for the presentation of Karno's medical examination report by the NMA due to the inability of the panel to conclude its assessment of the IPOB leader's health status and present its findings before the court.
24:05The DSS requested a one-week adjournment to allow the NMA medical board to conclude its investigation.
24:13Karno is currently being prosecuted by the federal government on charges relating to alleged terrorism.
24:20According to the panel's report,
24:22which was submitted to the court on October 13th,
24:25by the prosecution team led by Awomelo and partly read in open court during Thursday's proceedings,
24:30the medical body stated that the defendant's ailment does not pose any immediate danger to his life and confirmed that he is fit to stand trial.
24:39Relying on the medical findings and in the absence of any objection from counsel to the parties,
24:45Omatosho ruled that the court was satisfied that the defendant could proceed with his trial and okayed the medical facility of the DSS for his medical care.
24:53The judge consequently granted Karno six consecutive days,
24:58beginning from October 23rd to 30, to open and close.
25:03The defendant has until the 30th day of October to close his defense, Omatosho said.
25:09Additionally, Justice Omatosho granted an oral application by Karno's lead counsel,
25:15Chief Karno Agabi, S.A.N.,
25:16seeking permission for a private consultation between the defendant and his legal team outside the Department of State Services premises.
25:25Agabi had argued that the defense team feared the discussions with Karno might be monitored or recorded by the DSS.
25:33The court therefore approved that the private meeting be held within the courtroom,
25:37with only Karno and his lawyers present.
25:39The consultation is scheduled to take place between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on October 22nd,
25:46ahead of the resumption of the trial on October 23rd.
25:50The court adjourned for continuation of the trial and commencement of Karno's defense to the 23rd of October 2025.
25:58We have reported that Justice Mohammed Gaba Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday
26:04apparently rejected the plans by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokan,
26:11to stop the upcoming Monday, October 20th plan mass protests by Nigerians to demand the release of the detained Biafra Republic agitation leader,
26:20Mazi Namdi Karno, but, according to the organizer of the protest, Omiyele Saware,
26:26after the judge initially declined to grant the Nigeria Police Force an ex-party motion to stop the planned protest in the open court,
26:34the Federal High Court Judge, Justice Umar reportedly granted the motion in chambers,
26:40imposing a ban on protests at Aso Rock Villa, National Assembly, or Unity Fountain in Abuja.
26:46We await a certified true copy of the order, which our lawyers will review.
26:51The protest remains unstoppable, while this is ongoing.
26:54The United States, U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has warned America citizens to be far from the protest areas
27:02and limit their movements in the Nigeria capital city, Abuja, saying,
27:07the planned protest may lead to disruptions and violence.
27:11We have also reported that the Nigerian Army Authority has issued a statement,
27:16denying threat messages issued against members of the public ahead of the planned mass protests
27:21slated for October 20, 2025, to demand for the release and freedom of the detained Biafra Republic agitation leader,
27:30Mazi Namdi Karno, just as the organizer and chief campaigner, Omiyele Saware,
27:35the publisher of Sahara Reporters News Media met to seek understanding with the former president of Nigeria,
27:41Goodluck Abele Jonathan, who, according to Saware, promised to visit President Bola Ahmed Tanubu to discuss the issue with him.
