00:00I'm trying to get people to stop shooting each other that's it not many knew Utah's governor
00:13before the assassination of Charlie Kirk our nation is broken but Spencer Cox has been on
00:21a years-long crusade to heal American politics I don't think it's hyperbole to say that the
00:29future of our country is at stake we cut across the Baltic in this small Navy dinghy looking for
00:39clues to a nautical whodunit undersea cables that carry electricity gas digital communications
00:46have been severed in the waters off the coast of Finland so I have to ask what seems to be the
00:53obvious question is this Russia the most prominent fighter in the UFC hint he doesn't wear gloves
01:08good fight thank you very much it's the all-powerful boss Dana White we're definitely unapologetically
01:17masculine can this bubble over to too much when when you hear toxic masculinity what's that mean
01:23you tell me no you just said it can you be too masculine you tell me the answer is hell no
01:29I'm Scott Pelley I'm Bill Whitaker I'm Anderson Cooper I'm Sharon Alfonsi I'm John Wertheim I'm
01:38Cecilia Vega I'm Leslie Stahl those stories and in our last minute we tap into director Rob Reiner's
01:46latest film tonight on the 58th season premiere of 60 minutes
01:51a lonely voice rose above the rancor after the murder of Charlie Kirk Spencer Cox the Republican
02:08governor of Utah may not have been familiar to many but after the assassination in his state
02:14he asked whether we could all stop hating our fellow Americans we wanted to hear more and we
02:21were surprised to learn the 50-year-old Republican has spent years campaigning for reconciliation Cox is
02:29asking Americans to respect our differences which in this moment is not universally admired in his own
02:37party I get accused on the right all the time of I just want people to have a kumbaya moment I want
02:44people to hold hands and just hug it out and we're done with that we're done holding hands and hugging it
02:50out I'm not asking anybody to hold hands and hug it out I'm not asking for that I'm trying to get
02:55people to stop shooting each other that's it and I think what I'm doing and what I'm saying is the
03:04best way to do that some people will disagree with that and that's okay we should have these debates as
03:11a society I'm not always right I've made mistakes other politicians I think are making mistakes right
03:17now in trying to elevate the temperature but but I'm going to just keep having these conversations in
03:24this moment what's at stake Scott I I don't think it's hyperbole to say that the the future of our
03:32country is at stake this grand experiment that we embarked on 250 years ago can we hold together and
03:40what if our politics cannot find the path to the brighter light that's the question I always ask when I
03:46hear people say that that we're at war I say okay and and and what what does that mean what what is
03:52next who who am I supposed to shoot now the shot September 10th was the kind of attack now happening
04:06every couple of months or so in April the Democratic governor of Pennsylvania and his family escaped
04:14after their home was firebombed in June in their homes to Minnesota Democratic lawmakers and their
04:22spouses were gunned down a year earlier on the campaign it was Donald Trump himself when told this time it
04:31was Utah Cox didn't believe it but there it was on his phone the video was already out there was no fog of
04:41war there there was no doubt what had happened that terrible awful video that I wish I had not seen I
04:47hate again social media that almost every person in this country including our young people have seen
04:52that video on a loop over and over and over again and I can't unsee it I can't stop seeing it every time I
04:58close my eyes that's what I see the governor sent an aide to the hospital who reported that Kirk was dead
05:05Cox dialed a number as you're calling the White House what is in your heart just sickness nauseous
05:16disbelief anger at this point I'm very angry to whoever did this we will find you we will try you
05:29and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law his anger was showing I just want
05:37to remind people that we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah but when he searched for
05:43meaning he recalled the suffering of both parties our nation is broken we've had political assassinations
05:57recently in Minnesota we had an attempted assassination on the governor of Pennsylvania
06:06and we had an attempted assassination on a presidential candidate and former president
06:14of the United States and now current president of the United States
06:18nothing I say can unite us as a country nothing I can say right now can fix
06:27what is broken we just need every single person in this country to think about where we are and
06:37where we want to be I've been following I've been studying political violence and so I I'm keenly
06:45aware when these things happen and I'm seeing I'm seeing people get get murdered get attacked who are
06:52Democrats and Republicans and that's where it came from in that moment in the days after the murder as
07:00you're trying to bring the country together Steve Bannon the philosopher of the MAGA right called you a national
07:07embarrassment yeah I love free speech I would give my life defending his right to say that about me
07:16that's okay we can have that debate there are some people that think I am a national embarrassment
07:23and that's okay too who do you blame for the division I do believe that social media is a cancer and it is
07:32taking all of our worst impulses and putting them on steroids it is driving us to division it is driving us to
07:40hate these algorithms that have captured our very souls they've captured our free agency these dopamine
07:48hits that get our young people and our old people addicted to outrage and hate that serve us up on a
07:56regular basis are absolutely leading us down a very dark path a path through platforms that look like
08:04civil war powered by algorithms programs written to amplify posts of rage the algorithms are absolutely
08:14destroying us once they know what your political leanings are then it's like a pack of wolves that just
08:21attack we have this collective problem where that we can't solve because we're all sucked in and we don't
08:28know how to get out we met Spencer Cox in the capital at the foot of the Wasatch range in Salt Lake City he
08:37was raised one of eight on a farm of modest means he's a lawyer devoutly Mormon with three years left on
08:46his second term his conservative record includes tax cuts expansion of gun rights and restrictions on abortion you are a
08:57Republican but not a Trump Republican well that depends I did vote for him this last time he
09:0416 or 20 20 that is also correct and he gives me a very hard time about that every time we're we're
09:09together the tent is broad on the right and and I'm trying to show one way to do politics his way to do
09:18politics surprised many in 2020 campaigning for governor he refused to run negative ads I think you
09:27should vote for me yeah but really you should vote for me instead he asked his Democratic opponent to
09:33join him on the air we can disagree without hating each other and win or lose in Utah we work together so
09:40let's show the country that there's a better way my name is Chris Peterson and I'm Spencer Cox and we
09:46approve this message Cox took the message beyond Utah when in 2023 he became chair of the bipartisan
09:55National Governors Association there he launched a campaign called disagree better and went back on the
10:03air I'm Spencer Cox Republican governor of Utah and I'm Jared Polis Democratic governor of Colorado
10:10and 23 governors from both parties joined disagree better healthy disagreement means not assuming that
10:18the other side is deluded misinformed or actively trying to overthrow America this month Cox took the
10:26message to the University of Notre Dame he's done more than 20 of these events nationwide often with
10:34Democratic governors including Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico does disagree better mean that we
10:41should drop our differences and everybody meets in the middle absolutely not in fact it's the exact opposite
10:47of that abortion is an issue on which we disagree passionately and and yet even though we have these very
10:54strong it looks like a chasm between us I think we would both agree that we should be doing more
11:01to take care of single moms I think those are the types of things that that we can agree on while
11:07still being pretty passionate about about whether we think abortion should be legal and when you do
11:12that and we listen and we find that we there is some common ground it it reduces right lowers the
11:18temperature it provides opportunity not just for discourse but doing something do governors
11:24understand something that Washington does not yes yes we're completely about results not about rhetoric
11:33we like to say that that potholes aren't partisan and governors do have to deliver actual results
11:39I think there's a sadly in in DC we've seen this performative politics and and and and much less
11:46substance there are some people watching this interview who are disgusted that you two are sitting
11:53together well we need courage over comfort you know I don't work for a partisan party I work for every
12:02single New Mexican yeah I I see her as an American before I see her as as a Democrat or anything else I
12:10think we need more of these conversations I think we need them in our in our own homes in our own
12:16neighborhoods in our school boards in our city councils all across the country the day Charlie
12:22Kirk was murdered one of the first calls Spencer Cox received was from Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham we should be
12:31condemning at every chance we get political violence our democracy falters when we don't this is an
12:40American this is a person this is a person who lost his life in free speech and there's real grieving for
12:49that family and it doesn't end tomorrow it will last a lifetime says the Democrat says the Democrat because it's
12:59it's true it's true please include that it was late that afternoon we returned with Spencer Cox to Utah
13:08Valley University that flag that doesn't represent any single group it doesn't represent one part of our
13:15country and not another part of our country students gathered where Charlie Kirk was killed Cox told the crowd they
13:24can't count on politicians change he said must come from all of you thank you thanks for leading
13:33us out thank you I'm desperately looking for more architects and fewer arsonists again it's so easy to burn
13:41down and tear down and and we've got too much of that today I'm hoping that a positive vision for our country a
13:49a positive vision for our party treating everyone with dignity and respect that's how we get our country
13:55back some people watching this interview might be thinking he should run for president but the fact is you
14:01would never survive Republican primaries well the thought of of running for president makes me nauseous I
14:08have no interest in that I'm glad that there are good people who are willing to do that but but that is not
14:14something I've ever been interested in and you're also correct the the way we select our candidates makes
14:23it almost impossible for someone like me to have an opportunity is it possible that your message is naive
14:30that the violence will just continue that's that's very possible that's very possible I think the founders
14:38were naive to believe that they could start a new country based on a very different principles in it virtually
14:46any country in the history of the world I think that it was naive that that we could rebuild after a civil war
14:54had fractured us and we had killed 600,000 of our fellow Americans so I believe that naivete with that with some
15:02passion can change the world it's probably the only thing that ever has
15:11Eyewitnesses to murder
15:13yours was the last question Charlie Kirk ever heard
15:17yeah I don't really know how to grapple with that
15:19at 60minutesovertime.com
15:21as tensions rise between Europe and Russia Russian aircraft have pierced
15:33NATO airspace in Poland Romania and Estonia in recent weeks and in the Baltic Sea another
15:40incident has raised the stakes even higher a tanker named the Eagle S was tracked dragging
15:46its anchor across the floor leaving severed cables in its wake
15:51undersea cables carry the lifeblood of modern existence
15:55electricity, gas, digital communications, global banking, the internet itself
16:01without the cables all that would grind to a halt
16:05in the past two years at least eleven cables have been cut in the Baltic
16:10primarily in the waters off Finland which shares an 832 mile border with Russia
16:17who's behind the rash of brakes is a mystery but this much is known
16:23before Russia's war with Ukraine these types of incidents were extremely rare
16:32we cut across the Baltic Sea in this small navy dinghy looking for clues to a nautical whodunit
16:38we headed for the 170-foot Finnish minesweeper Vaaterpaa
16:43this massive ship towering above us is a crucial part of Finland's maritime defenses
16:49guarding these waters between Russia to the east and Estonia to the south
16:55everything is quite close here
16:57you've got Estonia, you've got Russia, you've got Finland, you've got Sweden
17:02all come together right in this area
17:05Chief of Staff of the Finnish Navy Tony Joccia told us the ship uses remote vehicles
17:11to monitor undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland
17:14a narrow shallow stretch of the Baltic crowded with thousands of vessels
17:19many of them carrying Russian oil and gas to India and China
17:23through Finnish waters day and night
17:26we know what's happening in the Gulf of Finland all times
17:30that's a lot to keep an eye on
17:33that's true, for example, Russia
17:3540% approximately of their commercial traffic goes through the Baltic Sea
17:41and a lot of that is the oil transport?
17:43yes, definitely
17:45it was one of those ships, the Eagle S
17:48loaded with Russian gas headed to Egypt
17:51that triggered a nationwide alarm in Finland on Christmas Day, 2024
17:57I remember it very clearly
18:00because I was here
18:02in my residence
18:04with my family
18:06with my old father
18:08spending Christmas Day
18:10Prime Minister Petteri Orpo
18:12got an urgent call from Finland's border guard
18:15that shattered the holiday calm
18:17I was told that we have problem with electricity cable between Finland and Estonia
18:24a critical undersea electric cable, S-Link 2
18:28had been severely damaged 50 miles off the Finnish coast
18:32because there had been five other recent suspicious cable and gas line breaks
18:37the border guard told the prime minister it suspected this one was deliberately severed by a ship
18:43what did they say?
18:44they told me there is suspected ship
18:48named Eagle S
18:50in Aria
18:52and they are on their way
18:54to the place
18:55and they are ready
18:57to react
18:59with the Eagle S near Finnish territorial waters
19:03Prime Minister Orpo
19:04authorized the extraordinary step
19:06of moving to intercept the tanker
19:09I made a phone call to the chief of the border guards
19:14and I said to him
19:16you can trust that you have my and my government's full support
19:23use all the tools you have
19:27Finland called all hands on deck
19:30as the coast guard vessel Turva sped toward the Eagle S
19:34police and Finland's National Bureau of Investigation monitored from shore
19:40we had the possibility to intervene and apprehend and secure the evidence
19:46Helsinki police chief Jerry Liuku says the coast guard radioed the Eagle S asking if its anchors were up and secure
19:54the reply was yes sir our anchors are secured
19:58but three hours later at 6 p.m. as the Turva closed in the crew could see that was not true
20:05the anchor chain was hanging in the water
20:08we had a strong reason to believe that
20:12it was an intentional activity from their side
20:16the Yuku was informed that a total of five crucial undersea cables along the route of the Eagle S
20:23had been broken that day
20:25and the ship was still on the move
20:28and of course there was a risk that criminal activity may continue
20:31unless the authorities intervene
20:35just after midnight as the ship entered Finnish waters
20:38Finland dispatched an armed team of special forces to the Eagle S by helicopter
20:43they dropped onto the vessel in the dark
20:46and seized control from about two dozen crewmen from the countries of Georgia and India
20:52the police and the border guard and the defense force were actually taking over the brits
20:58is that unusual?
21:01well it was first time when after second world war when Finnish troops boarded a boat
21:10the first time since the second world war?
21:12yeah that's right
21:13because we had to do something in that case
21:15there was an imminent threat that other critical infrastructure between Finland and Estonia would be damaged
21:21we used like
21:23Risto Lohi overseeing the Eagle S case for Finland's National Bureau of Investigation
21:28told us the next cables in the Eagle S's path could have strained Estonia's electricity and gas supply
21:36so there was also a necessity to intervene
21:40this is underwater video of the crime scene
21:43Finnish investigators determined the Eagle S had raked its anchor across the sea bottom for more than six hours
21:50when the ship was ordered to haul it up
21:53the anchor was so battered it snapped off the chain
21:57we found the anchor and the track mark on the seabed started from the first damaged cable
22:03and the track mark was continuous until the location when the vessel was stopped
22:09police handed their evidence to Finnish prosecutors
22:12who charged the captain and the Eagle S's two senior officers with aggravated criminal mischief
22:18and interference with communications
22:21they pleaded not guilty
22:23the damaged cables cost 70 million dollars to repair
22:27the case is still underway
22:29in court the captain claimed the anchor had been dragged by accident
22:34how far did they drag this anchor?
22:36approximately 100 kilometers altogether
22:40that's 66 miles before the Coast Guard cutter Torva confronted and ultimately stopped the Eagle S
22:47commander Miko Simola told us the tanker's behavior raised serious alarm
22:53there are fail-safe measures on the anchor to keep it from dropping accidentally, are there not?
23:01certainly there are safety mechanisms
23:04there are like three different safety mechanisms
23:06different safety mechanisms
23:08the captain of the ship says that he didn't know that the anchor had been lowered and dragged for 66 miles
23:18is that believable?
23:19it's hard to believe being a Coast Guard officer certainly
23:23the captain of the vessel must always know whether the anchor is hoisted or in the sea
23:29so interesting comment this is what I could say
23:32an interesting comment
23:33yeah certainly
23:34more suspicious?
23:36the ownership of the 20 year old Eagle S
23:39a 7 month investigation by 60 Minutes
23:42found its owners hidden behind layers of shell companies
23:46public records list the primary owner as a woman from Azerbaijan
23:51with an office in Dubai
23:53the ship is managed by a company in India
23:56and leased to a major Russian oil company
23:59that oil company has financed a fleet of hard-to-trace tankers
24:04to move Russian oil evading Western sanctions
24:08this phenomenon is called Russian shadow fleet
24:13shadow fleet
24:14shadow fleet
24:15shadow fleet
24:16it is pumping money to Putin's war machine
24:20he's still making profit off of Russian oil
24:24even though the sanctions are in place
24:26yes
24:27Prime Minister Orpo told us
24:29the shadow fleet's constant presence in the Baltic Sea
24:32is raising the temperature with Russia
24:35barely 200 miles across the water
24:38do you consider Russia a threat?
24:40of course Russia is a threat
24:42we can see what they have done against Ukraine
24:45and also in Finland we have seen many hybrid attacks
24:51what do you mean by hybrid attacks?
24:53we have seen these incidents by Baltic Sea
24:59we have seen sabotage in Europe
25:04so we are not in the war
25:07but we are under attack
25:10you're not in war
25:12no we are not in war
25:13but you're under attack
25:15because we are the target
25:18beyond recent Russian aircraft incursions into NATO airspace
25:23EU officials have connected Russia to numerous attacks in Europe
25:27fire bombings
25:28assaults on rail and arms depots
25:31explosive packages
25:33and now the mystery of the Eagle S
25:36this breaking of the undersea cables
25:40this was not happening before the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine?
25:45no
25:46we didn't have any this kind of incidents before Russian aggression against Ukraine
25:51but after that we have had many
25:53so I have to ask what seems to be the obvious question
25:57is this Russia?
25:59does it feel as though Russia is probing and prodding to find soft spots in not just Finland's defenses but NATO's?
26:18this is their way to try to harm us
26:22make us afraid
26:24Prime Minister Orpo says the Eagle S was a test of Finland's resolve
26:31we sent a clear signal to the shadow fleet
26:34and maybe to the actors behind
26:37that we have our limits
26:39Finland joined NATO in 2023
26:42the alliance recently launched Operation Baltic Sentry
26:46deploying ships and planes to monitor the shadow fleet and safeguard critical seabed infrastructure
26:52British Admiral Keith Blount
26:55NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander
26:58told us the Eagle S incident was a provocation that demanded a response
27:03we launched a response to try and deter
27:08prevent similar incidents happening again in the Baltic
27:13so it was kind of a triggering event for us
27:15and of course we haven't seen another incident since we established Baltic Sentry
27:21what is the message that Baltic Sentry is sending?
27:26we're not going to be pushed around interfered with
27:31we're not going to be subject to illegal behaviors
27:34that either threaten the rule of law
27:38or worse threaten the safety and security of our people
27:41because of its connection to the shadow fleet
27:44the Eagle S was sanctioned by the EU, England and Canada
27:48restricting its access to ports
27:51on the face of it the incident seems to be a small thing
27:55but when I see your reaction
27:58when I see NATO's reaction
28:01that Eagle S incident has turned out to be quite a big deal
28:05yes it was a big deal
28:07we have to react
28:09and it was first time we react
28:11we show that we are ready to defense our critical infrastructure
28:18our property
28:20and that's why it was turning point
28:22I have a saying in the United States
28:24enough is enough
28:26yes, enough is enough
28:28he holds no championship belt
28:41but Dana White is the most prominent and pugnacious figure in the UFC
28:45the ultimate fighting championship
28:47the CEO slash hype man is the embodiment of the league itself
28:51long on unapologetic force short on precious formality
28:55intoxicating to some and acquired taste to others
28:59and much like the UFC
29:01White has penetrated the defense of mainstream culture
29:04moving in from the fringes to join the ultra rich
29:07serve on the board of Meta and befriend the current president
29:10a small disclosure
29:12we've been speaking with White for years about his appearing on this broadcast
29:15a heavyweight disclosure
29:17this was before Paramount Skydance parent company of CBS
29:21recently paid almost $8 billion for the UFC's media rights
29:26yes, cage fighting on network television
29:28perhaps the ultimate sign of how far this sport
29:31and its no-holds-barred leader have come
29:34tuesday night's alright for fighting
29:45we sat outside the octagon for Dana White's contender series
29:49a streaming show that doubles as the UFC's farm system
29:53yeah, yeah, yeah
29:55if the fighters entertain White like this first round knockout artist
29:59he rewards them with a UFC contract
30:02good fight, thank you tonight
30:03incredible
30:04an invitation by the big boss to the big show
30:09White is chief author of the greatest sports business story of this century
30:13maybe ever
30:14oh, that looks good
30:16in his thirties he helped buy the UFC
30:18then a renegade cage fighting operation for $2 million
30:22UFC
30:24now 56, he runs a global league valued at more than $15 billion
30:29675 fighters under contract
30:33oh, a shield!
30:36right to the body!
30:37a brutal mashup that includes kickboxing, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu
30:42fire away, you know me man, you've known me for a long time
30:45fire away, I don't give a shit
30:46the entire business is built more on White's force of personality
30:50than on a traditional playbook
30:52we met him at UFC headquarters in Las Vegas
30:55whenever I read stories about the business of UFC
30:59I literally laugh and say
31:01nobody knows anything about the business
31:03so what is everyone missing?
31:05for 25 years people have been trying to figure it out
31:08and people have been trying to do it
31:10someone told me it all starts with Dana's gut
31:12that's absolutely true
31:14I don't know who told you that, but that's right
31:16we got a sellout crowd here, 5,000 people
31:19it was his gut that got him into the game
31:22he managed boxers in Boston, then fighters in Vegas
31:25in the fledgling sport of MMA, mixed martial arts
31:28when White caught wind, UFC's owners were out of money
31:32his first call went to two high school buddies
31:34Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, Las Vegas casino heirs
31:38I said, I think they're going out of business
31:40we could probably buy this thing and we should
31:43the Fertittas put up the money
31:45White got 10%, but he had to run the damn thing
31:48the UFC wasn't just unprofitable
31:51it was largely unsanctioned
31:54in February 2001
31:56White needed a home for the first fight of his regime
31:59none of the venues wanted this
32:01you know, they didn't believe in it
32:03they didn't like it
32:04and they were worried about the type of crowd
32:06that would show up for this type of event
32:08he found hospitality at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City
32:13then owned by a familiar fight fan, Donald Trump
32:16when the Trump brand was here
32:19and the UFC brand was down there
32:21he saw it and said, I'd love to have this at my casino
32:25he showed up, the first prelim fight of the night
32:29and stayed till the main event was over
32:31he watched the whole card?
32:32watched the whole card
32:33what did the balance sheets look like back in those early days?
32:36it was so bad that at one point Lorenzo called me and said
32:40Dana, I can't keep doing this man
32:42I'm literally blowing all my family's money
32:45and obviously that night I'm thinking
32:47we're done
32:48it's a wrap
32:49this is over
32:50and he calls me the next day
32:52and literally this is what he said to me
32:54let's keep going
32:56so they did
32:57do you want to be a fighter?
32:59a reality series and its storylines
33:02helped draw in millions of fans
33:04obviously a massive, massive accomplishment
33:07electric matchups
33:08and Joe Rogan on the mic kept it rolling
33:10oh, he's done
33:12he's done
33:13from the beginning, White imposed his will
33:15just ask the guys in the live TV production truck
33:18that didn't follow his direction
33:20I literally got up from my seat
33:21went back there and kicked the door open
33:22they disobeyed the box
33:23to the truck, yeah
33:24kicked the door open to the truck
33:26you know, I was basically like
33:28you ever do this again
33:30I'm firing every one of you
33:32long story short
33:33we ended up firing everybody
33:34it's been an honor calling your fight, sir
33:36thank you very much
33:37you're welcome
33:38by 2016
33:39the sport sanctioned in every state
33:41the UFC sold for $4 billion
33:44on the condition
33:45White stay on as CEO
33:49President Trump still routinely shows up
33:52at UFC fights
33:54but now makes a grand entrance
33:56the relationship that he and I have
33:58and when we get together
34:00when I have dinner with him
34:01we don't talk politics
34:03what are you talking about?
34:04we talk about goofy guy stuff
34:05that all guys talk about
34:06you know what I mean?
34:07like what?
34:08we talk about Rocky movies
34:09we talk about
34:10different fights that have happened
34:11that that's a real samurai
34:13White's office is a shrine to guy stuff
34:16the mother of all man caves
34:18this is a piece of art that represents war
34:21war is all about money
34:23you once used a term with me
34:24that I quoted you on
34:25the wussification of America
34:27I think I said
34:29but yeah I get it
34:30we're on 60 minutes
34:31yeah
34:32has the pendulum swung the other way?
34:33I feel like it's starting to
34:35cage fighting has always celebrated male bravado
34:39but White is intent that more women than ever follow the sport
34:45he bristles at the suggestion that UFC fandom is taking on new edge
34:51you don't think we're
34:52there's this cultural movement
34:54it's a lot of guys
34:55call it the manosphere
34:57you're one of the leaders
34:58you know when you talk about
35:00knowing your fan base and knowing who they are
35:02who are they?
35:03who are they?
35:0418 to 34 year old males
35:06and growing global
35:07we are definitely
35:10unapologetically masculine
35:13can this bubble over to too much?
35:15when you hear toxic masculinity
35:17what's that mean?
35:18you tell me
35:19no
35:20you just said it
35:21what's the definition of toxic?
35:22how can somebody be too masculine?
35:24is that a possibility?
35:25can you be too masculine?
35:26you tell me
35:27no
35:28do you think so?
35:29the answer is hell no
35:32hang out with Dana White in Vegas
35:34and odds are good you'll end up here
35:36at the Bellagio
35:37hi, how are you guys?
35:38good to see you
35:39thank you
35:40enough of a regular
35:41he's plied with whiskey and a cigar
35:43before heading to a private baccarat table
35:45in this city nothing is off limits
35:49how much are we betting here?
35:50400,000
35:51the $400,000 hand?
35:52mm-hmm
35:53because these sissies won't give me a million a hand
35:56a few hands in
35:58fortune was not in his corner
36:00god damn it
36:01ooh
36:02no bueno
36:04we're down a million two forty
36:06you heard right
36:08he was down 1.2 million dollars
36:10what's this feeding in you?
36:11i'm a sick sick
36:13that's the only explanation i can give you
36:17not ten minutes later
36:19boom let's go
36:20come on
36:21where's the stance?
36:23he was cashing out
36:27up $700,000
36:29this is how we do it
36:32another win for White's instincts
36:35his gut proved golden once again in august
36:38when paramount skydance outbid others
36:41and offered the ufc 7.7 billion dollars over seven years
36:46for u.s media rights
36:47putting the ufc right up there with other major sports leagues
36:51you still have ten percent of this enterprise?
36:53ha ha ha ha
36:55i have a deal here
36:56that would make roger goodell and every other guy go holy
37:00meaning what?
37:02i got a damn good deal
37:04listen man this business has worked just fine
37:06the model isn't broken
37:08you know
37:09i love when people who have no idea what they're talking about
37:12one question that hounds White
37:14here we go round two
37:16does enough of the ufc's big money see it's way to the fighters
37:19the big stars can make millions per fight
37:23the so called bottom of the card fighters are paid as little as $12,000
37:29earlier this year the ufc settled a class action antitrust lawsuit with fighters for $375 million
37:37your media rights deal basically doubled
37:40is fighter pay
37:42gonna increase proportionately?
37:44i can't sit here right now and tell you
37:46you know it's double
37:47it's one and a half
37:48it's triple
37:49but yeah fighter pay is
37:50yeah it's gonna be good
37:52do you pay fighters a fair wage?
37:54absolutely
37:55people don't know how much a lot of these guys make
37:58if you want to know what
37:59Lebron James makes it's two keystrokes away
38:02we're different in a lot of ways
38:04we're different than most major sports
38:07and this is the only sport
38:09where the athletes get to say whatever they want
38:12another difference
38:13in most sports
38:14offensive speech by athletes can result in suspension
38:17not so the ufc
38:19we don't have to agree with it
38:21we don't have to like it
38:22is there anything a fighter can say
38:25tweet do
38:26that you say you know what
38:28there got to be consequences
38:30i'm a big believer in free speech
38:32and unfortunately
38:34probably the most important speech to protect
38:36is hate speech
38:37you're not a fan of cancel culture
38:39no i hate it
38:40on both sides
38:41it's like
38:42all the stuff that's going on with Charlie right now
38:45you know
38:47these people are going out and saying stuff
38:49and you know you're seeing people getting fired
38:51or kicked out of school
38:52you don't think they should be fired?
38:53i think you're a disgusting human being
38:55if you're celebrating the death of another human being
38:58but people make mistakes
39:00and people are going to do dumb things
39:02i don't like trying to destroy people's lives
39:06over doing something dumb
39:10so we're going to be here on the white house lawn
39:13top of mind for white
39:15a fight card next summer
39:16so the fighters will walk out of the oval office
39:19to come to the octagon
39:20the same man who once offered white a casino
39:22for staging the ufc
39:24now has offered his backyard
39:26what can you tell me about the card?
39:28everybody wants to fight on the card
39:30there's going to be a fight
39:31on the south lawn of the white house
39:33way-ins at the lincoln memorial
39:35i still can't believe i'm saying those words
39:37even an optimist like you
39:39i can't believe i'm hearing them
39:40inspiring the awe
39:42this will hardly mark white's first trip to the halls of power
39:46at president trump's inauguration
39:48he got the equivalent of a cage-side seat
39:51what do you say to the fans who say
39:52i feel like the ufc is taken a side
39:55i am an american citizen
39:57biden was my president
39:59trump is my president
40:01i was at the inauguration
40:03and i was sitting behind all the ex-presidents
40:06and there was this stuff going around like
40:08dana's mad dog and president obama
40:11president obama
40:13turned around
40:14the only president that did
40:16and shook my hand and said congratulations on all your success
40:20and i said thank you very much mr president
40:22that's what you were people wondered what you guys were talking about
40:24that's what happened i've never talked about that publicly
40:26if president obama called and said
40:28hey i'd like to come see a fight we'd be like
40:30yeah buy some tickets and good luck here whatever
40:33no the sitting president or an ex-president of the united states
40:37wants to come to your event
40:39you treat them with respect
40:41meanwhile white's tent is expanding
40:45two weeks ago he promoted championship boxing under the ufc umbrella
40:50almost 71 000 people
40:52and it was the third biggest fight ever in the history of boxing
40:55you're saying it went well
40:56it didn't suck
40:58enjoy yourself tonight and have a good time
41:01after a big fight weekend most execs might give their staff a pat on the back
41:05relax drink and smoke some cigars have a good night
41:09white the bluntest instrument in all of sports
41:12threw his staff a weeknight bash
41:15we asked around about you
41:17one word came up again and again
41:19you know what it was
41:20loyal
41:21boom
41:22yeah
41:23got some detractors too
41:25you want to guess this one
41:26what
41:27bully
41:28bully
41:29yeah that makes sense
41:30you don't seem so bothered by that
41:32yeah i love it
41:33i love it
41:34listen if you want to be my friend
41:36i'm the best friend you'll ever have
41:38you want to be my enemy
41:39i'm really good at being that too
41:49the last minute of 60 minutes is sponsored by united healthcare
41:54coverage you can count on for your whole life ahead
41:58now a look ahead to next week's 60 minutes we'll profile rob reiner who went from a character nicknamed meathead to director of some of the most memorable movies ever
42:13including his unlikely first film this is spinal tap a cult classic that mocked rock and gave new meaning the numbers all go to 11 to the number 11. one loud why don't you just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number and make that a little louder. these go to 11. all right here we go. we joined reiner on set as he directs. okay time to be the top number and make that a little louder. these go to 11. all right here we go.
42:40we've joined reiner on set as he directs. okay tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap. and stars in a sequel 41 years later. you got him right here. you're the director directing yourself. i know it's crazy. it's crazy. it's making me nuts.
