00:00:00Isn't this beautiful?
00:00:08I don't know about you, Adam,
00:00:09but if I'm looking at water or around water,
00:00:11I don't know, the whole world just feels that little bit better with it in it.
00:00:14Yeah, I have to agree, but with a house full of girls,
00:00:16the only water feature I'm used to
00:00:17is the sound of the rain head and the bath constantly filling up.
00:00:20You are not alone.
00:00:21So tonight we're actually lifting the lid
00:00:23on just how much water the average Aussie household uses.
00:00:26And believe me, the results are quite eye-opening.
00:00:29Yeah, so we're going to share some habit-changing tips
00:00:32that will make the most out of every drop
00:00:34and have you saving big on your next water bill.
00:00:37Plus, we have many more great ideas for you coming your way right now.
00:00:41Tonight we've got a cheat sheet for an Italian classic.
00:00:45It's loosely based on a risotto,
00:00:48but it's not a risotto because we're using pearl barley.
00:00:50We're cheating.
00:00:52It's that time of the year again.
00:00:54We're showing you how to spring into spring.
00:00:57Why not take advantage of all of that growth and activity
00:01:00and get stuck in?
00:01:03You'll have bedroom eyes for this stunning makeover.
00:01:06Now it's my mission to add back in
00:01:08some personality and style with colour.
00:01:12Meet the garden designer putting Aussie natives in the spotlight.
00:01:16This is sensational.
00:01:18Thanks.
00:01:18The hardest part of cooking Clarissa's pork dumplings
00:01:22is having some left by dinner time.
00:01:26If my daughter could have this for breakfast, lunch and dinner, she would.
00:01:30And this pig is named Beavis.
00:01:32But will he and Dr Harry butt heads?
00:01:35This is Beavis.
00:01:36Hello, Beavis.
00:01:37How are you?
00:01:38It's fair to say that we are a country
00:01:45that understands the effects of living with droughts and floods.
00:01:48In fact, I would go so far as to say Aussies are quite water aware.
00:01:51We don't like to waste it.
00:01:53Yeah, but that being said, Grigso,
00:01:54I mean, we still need to have our showers,
00:01:56clean the house, wash our food, the cars, our clothes.
00:02:00Have you ever wondered just how much drinking quality water
00:02:03the average Aussie consumes every single day?
00:02:06How much?
00:02:07180 litres per day.
00:02:09Which is the equivalent to one very full bath.
00:02:12Don't worry.
00:02:13We have a bunch of fabulous tips
00:02:15that will make you more water wise and save you money.
00:02:18But to do that, we've got to head home.
00:02:19Let's do it.
00:02:33We spend the majority of our lives in our kitchen,
00:02:36so not surprisingly, this is one room
00:02:37where we absolutely churn through the water.
00:02:40I mean, how many of you are guilty
00:02:41turning on a running tap
00:02:43and rinsing your veggies before you peel them?
00:02:45Well, not this guy.
00:02:46No, I'll just follow the rules, Grigso.
00:02:48I mean, it's pretty easy just to push the plug down
00:02:50and fill it up with a little bit of water,
00:02:52or you can even use a bucket
00:02:53and the excess water can be used in your garden.
00:02:56Brilliant.
00:02:56And if you need to defrost meat from your freezer,
00:02:58don't do that under running water.
00:03:00Instead, use your fridge or your microwave.
00:03:02It'll save you heaps.
00:03:08Now, we all know we shouldn't be putting
00:03:10any oils or fats down a drain
00:03:11because it could clog it up.
00:03:13So if you do have a frying pan like this,
00:03:15it's got oil in it,
00:03:16you can simply just wipe it up with some paper towel.
00:03:18Or if you've got excess oil,
00:03:19you can simply fill up an old container.
00:03:22Once that's full, you can throw that out.
00:03:24Hey, another massive don't to put down your sink,
00:03:26which people might not realise,
00:03:28is actually milk and cream.
00:03:29Why?
00:03:30Well, they're actually full of fats as well.
00:03:32Now, the reason why we tell you
00:03:33not to put any of these down the sink
00:03:35is that they actually come together
00:03:37and they gather up all other little scraps
00:03:39and they create these disgusting fatbergs
00:03:41which will put a huge amount of extra pressure
00:03:43on our waste water system.
00:03:45If you have a little bit of excess milk left over
00:03:47that's gone out of date or some cream,
00:03:49a really great tip is just to dilute it using water
00:03:53and then get online and find out which plants love it
00:03:55because this is actually a really good tip for your gardening.
00:03:58Some plants absolutely thrive with this.
00:04:01There you go.
00:04:01So it's not only good for your bones.
00:04:03Now, also, tea leaves and coffee grounds.
00:04:05Now, they definitely shouldn't be going down the sink.
00:04:08That's perfect for the compost.
00:04:10The only thing that should be going down the sink
00:04:11is water, soap and detergent.
00:04:14Simple.
00:04:14Yeah.
00:04:14Now, when it comes to the dishwasher,
00:04:22I've got a couple of tips for you.
00:04:23First one would be don't worry about the pre-rinse setting.
00:04:27Honestly, you're better just to scrape everything
00:04:29into your compost and if you have to rinse,
00:04:31do what Adam was doing with his veggies.
00:04:32Just put the plug down, use a tiny bit of water.
00:04:35The other thing would be don't put on your dishwasher
00:04:37until it's completely full
00:04:39unless you have that setting that can do a half wash.
00:04:41One setting I would recommend, though, if you have it,
00:04:44the eco setting.
00:04:45It will save you some money.
00:04:47And finally, if you do have to replace your dishwasher
00:04:49and get a new one,
00:04:50follow the energy ratings
00:04:51because they're there for a reason.
00:04:53All right, out the way, out the way.
00:04:54Most importantly,
00:04:56if you have a drip-in tap,
00:04:57you'll want to fix it.
00:04:58Now, you'd be surprised to know
00:04:59that a drip-in tap left unattended
00:05:01could waste up to 200 litres of water a day.
00:05:05That is a third of your monthly water use.
00:05:08So if you've got a drip, fix it.
00:05:14Can you guess the chief water guzzler of the home?
00:05:17Yep, it is the bathroom,
00:05:19making up to 40% to 50% of a household's water use.
00:05:23So how can we save in here?
00:05:25Well, let's start at the basin.
00:05:27When you're brushing your teeth,
00:05:29a simple thing to remember
00:05:30is to make sure that you've got the tap turned off.
00:05:33Also, if you're having a shave,
00:05:35turn that tap off, push the plug in,
00:05:37just fill up the sink a little bit
00:05:38to rinse your razor out.
00:05:39Don't keep that tap running.
00:05:41You might also consider
00:05:42adding a flow-controlled aerator to your tap.
00:05:45They're inexpensive
00:05:46and can produce water flow by up to 50%.
00:05:50It's fair to say
00:05:59that everyone loves a nice long shower,
00:06:01but you'll be surprised to know
00:06:02that if everyone in Australia
00:06:04cut their shower by just 10 seconds,
00:06:07we would save 40 million litres of water per day.
00:06:12That is 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
00:06:15Unbelievable.
00:06:16Now, what about your shower head?
00:06:18Now, the old ones use up to 25 litres per minute,
00:06:21but if you install
00:06:23a new water-efficient four-star head,
00:06:25that uses around 7 litres per minute.
00:06:28So that's a massive saving
00:06:30on your water and energy bill.
00:06:35And what about those sneaky leaks
00:06:37that we can't even see?
00:06:38They could be costing you
00:06:39thousands of litres of water per year.
00:06:42Like when a cistern leaks into a pan.
00:06:45The leak is so small,
00:06:46we can barely even notice it.
00:06:48So a good way to test it
00:06:49is to get some food colour
00:06:51and simply put some of that
00:06:53into your cistern.
00:06:54If you lift up the lid to your pan
00:06:56and see it coming out,
00:06:57you know you've got a leak
00:06:58and you need to get a plumber in.
00:07:07Let's see if this toilet's all right.
00:07:09Look at that.
00:07:10No leaks.
00:07:11Now, another good way to save water
00:07:14if you've got an old toilet
00:07:15is replace it with one of these modern ones.
00:07:17Now, an older toilet
00:07:18uses around 11 litres per flush.
00:07:22But a dual flush toilet like this one
00:07:24uses about 4.5 litres for a full flush
00:07:27and 3 litres for a half flush.
00:07:29So that's saving you a lot of water.
00:07:32Now, I guess one of the most important parts
00:07:35is we need to talk about
00:07:36what goes down a loo.
00:07:39Now, the definite no-nos
00:07:40is there's no hair,
00:07:42no dental floss,
00:07:44no cotton buds,
00:07:45definitely no wet wipes,
00:07:47even tissues are a big no-no
00:07:49because they just don't break down properly.
00:07:52If you're putting any of these things
00:07:54down your sewer pipes,
00:07:55you could end up
00:07:56with an expensive plumbing bill.
00:07:58Not to mention
00:07:59the hundreds of tonnes of rubbish
00:08:01that end up in our waste water.
00:08:04So remember,
00:08:05kids and grown-ups,
00:08:06the only thing that should be
00:08:07going down your loo
00:08:09are the three P's.
00:08:10That is poo,
00:08:12pee,
00:08:12and toilet paper.
00:08:14That's pretty easy to remember.
00:08:18And coming up a bit later,
00:08:20we flush out even more water savings
00:08:23for your laundry and backyard.
00:08:26The all-white room is a classic,
00:08:28but this one could use a little help
00:08:30with some personality.
00:08:32There's so much spring colour around now,
00:08:34I can't wait to get these
00:08:35into the garden.
00:08:39This segment is brought to you
00:08:44by Dulux Wash & Wear
00:08:46for a superior washable finish.
00:08:50All-white.
00:08:52It's a safe choice for any room,
00:08:53and how often do I see it?
00:08:55All.
00:08:56The.
00:08:57Time.
00:08:57That's exactly what's happened
00:08:58in this bedroom.
00:08:59The young family moved in,
00:09:01painted everything white
00:09:01to freshen it up,
00:09:02but now it's my mission
00:09:03to add back in
00:09:05some personality and style
00:09:06with colour.
00:09:07Let's go.
00:09:14Okay, great, thanks.
00:09:16Okay.
00:09:27These louvered wardrobe doors
00:09:28have definitely seen better days.
00:09:30There's even a whole door missing here,
00:09:32but don't worry,
00:09:32I've got an idea
00:09:33to sort them out.
00:09:34We're never gonna happen
00:09:35Oh, no, never gonna, never gonna
00:09:41We're never gonna happen
00:09:43Oh, no, never, ever, ever
00:09:45There's really not a lot going on
00:09:56in this room,
00:09:57and with four white walls,
00:09:58it feels like a stark box.
00:10:00So, I'm gonna introduce
00:10:02some joyful colour.
00:10:04Now, the colours I'm using
00:10:05are these four.
00:10:07Four might seem like a lot,
00:10:08but I know that they're gonna
00:10:09all work together
00:10:10because they're from
00:10:11the Dual Luxe Ethereal palette.
00:10:13The colour I'm starting with
00:10:15is this really lovely
00:10:16soft muted green.
00:10:17This soft green is called
00:10:38Tiamo,
00:10:39and I'm using it on
00:10:40the whole wall,
00:10:41including the wardrobe
00:10:42and the frame,
00:10:44and that is called
00:10:44colour blocking.
00:10:46It'll highlight
00:10:46the shape of this area.
00:10:48I can hear my heart beating
00:10:51My feet can finally feel the ground
00:10:53I'm finding my way
00:10:56I can feel my blood breathing
00:10:59Words lost doesn't always need to be found
00:11:03What a beautiful day
00:11:07This stunning pink is called
00:11:09Savin,
00:11:09and I mentioned earlier
00:11:10that this home belongs
00:11:11to a young family.
00:11:13This room is the master bedroom.
00:11:14Anyone with little kids
00:11:15will know that
00:11:16they're constantly in and out
00:11:18of mum and dad's room.
00:11:19The thing I love about
00:11:20Dual Luxe Wash & Wear
00:11:21is that it has advanced
00:11:23washability and stain resistance,
00:11:25which means you don't have to worry
00:11:27about those little messy fingers
00:11:28touching the walls
00:11:29because you can just wipe it
00:11:30over and over again.
00:11:37I'm going to relocate the bed
00:11:59over here
00:12:00and to delineate the space
00:12:02I'm painting it this blush tone
00:12:04called Different Pink.
00:12:05It'll give the illusion of a headboard
00:12:07and the other good thing
00:12:09about this paint
00:12:09is that it's mould and mildew resistant
00:12:11which is perfect in a bedroom.
00:12:29The fourth and final colour
00:12:30is called Lilium 2
00:12:32and it's a gorgeous neutral
00:12:33that's going to tie
00:12:34all of the other colours together.
00:12:49We've all seen louver doors like this
00:12:51and they're really practical
00:12:52for wardrobe doors
00:12:53because they allow airflow
00:12:54through to your clothes
00:12:55or whatever else is inside
00:12:56so they don't get musty.
00:12:58This though is going to be
00:12:59too heavy for the new look
00:13:00of the room that we've got
00:13:01plus it's a little bit damaged
00:13:03so I'm going to undercoat it
00:13:05and then apply that same Tiamo green
00:13:08for that colour blocking effect.
00:13:31With the paint now dry
00:13:36I can get to work on solving
00:13:37the problem of missing slats in here
00:13:40and I'm using this beautiful fabric
00:13:41it's a pinstripe that matches
00:13:43the paint colour perfectly.
00:13:45To attach it to the doors
00:13:47I'm just using some dowel
00:13:48and eye hooks
00:13:49and I'm going to put them in
00:13:50at each end
00:13:51and then you'll get that lovely
00:13:53gathered effect with the fabric.
00:13:55I think too much
00:13:56This is looking so good
00:14:09but you'll remember
00:14:10we only have three doors
00:14:11there was a whole one missing
00:14:13so I've roped Adam in
00:14:14to help out
00:14:15and that is coming up
00:14:16a little later on.
00:14:18There's something so relaxing
00:14:20about a zen garden
00:14:21and it's not that hard
00:14:22to get the look.
00:14:24Five minutes of waiting
00:14:27is well worth the time.
00:14:29Look at that.

00:15:34Just take a look around
00:15:36isn't it great
00:15:36the garden is finally
00:15:38starting to lift again
00:15:39plants are popping up
00:15:40everywhere
00:15:40so why not take advantage
00:15:42of all of that growth
00:15:43and activity
00:15:43and get stuck in.
00:15:45at this time of year
00:15:54garden centres
00:15:55are quite literally
00:15:56bursting at the seams
00:15:57because you get
00:15:58this big influx of plants
00:16:00ready to go
00:16:01into the garden
00:16:01and there's nothing
00:16:02like a bunning shop
00:16:03to get you inspired.
00:16:04you can never go wrong
00:16:14with daisies.
00:16:15so many pots to choose from
00:16:24but white
00:16:25always brings
00:16:26a fresh look
00:16:27to the garden
00:16:27it's so cute.
00:16:34I'm really racking up
00:16:44the trolleys now
00:16:45I just need a few more things
00:16:47to bring the lawn
00:16:48back to life
00:16:48I haven't even started
00:16:50in the outdoor furniture department
00:16:52first job on the list
00:17:04the lawn
00:17:05now we all know
00:17:06the lawn can look
00:17:06a little bit worse
00:17:07for wear coming out
00:17:08of the winter
00:17:08but it's a really good time
00:17:10to just do a few
00:17:11simple things
00:17:12to get in tip top shape
00:17:13for spring
00:17:13so I've just raked up
00:17:15the leaves
00:17:15but have a look at this
00:17:17this isn't an ordinary rake
00:17:19it's multifunctional
00:17:20so you quite simply
00:17:21push these buttons
00:17:22and the end of the rake
00:17:24pops off
00:17:25and separates
00:17:26so they're like
00:17:27giant claws
00:17:28that you can use
00:17:28to help you pick up
00:17:29the leaves
00:17:30you might also need
00:17:39to get your hands
00:17:39on a de-thatching rake
00:17:41so basically
00:17:42what that does
00:17:42is it helps to remove
00:17:44any of that dead
00:17:45organic matter
00:17:46that is accumulated
00:17:47around the roots
00:17:48of the grass
00:17:49because that stuff
00:17:50tends to stop
00:17:51water and nutrients
00:17:52getting down
00:17:53to where it's needed
00:17:53most
00:17:54and if you notice
00:17:55any areas of wear
00:17:56and tear
00:17:56then you might want
00:17:57to top dress
00:17:58or reseed
00:17:58and fix any
00:17:59of those patches
00:18:00when you're planting up
00:18:12big pots like this
00:18:13it's nice to be able
00:18:14to plant them in situ
00:18:15or you could choose
00:18:16lightweight pots like this
00:18:17which are easy to move
00:18:18around the garden
00:18:19I've also used a good quality
00:18:21organic potting mix
00:18:22because I think it's nice
00:18:23to plant organically
00:18:24grow organically
00:18:25beyond the veggie patch
00:18:26now when it comes
00:18:27to planting combinations
00:18:28this look is going
00:18:29to be very spring
00:18:30so I'm using pink
00:18:32and white tones
00:18:33so at the centre
00:18:34sort of the highlight
00:18:35of my potted display
00:18:36is this beautiful
00:18:37double daisy
00:18:38that we picked up earlier
00:18:39this one's called
00:18:40pink posy
00:18:41and it's absolutely
00:18:41smothered in flowers
00:18:43and as far as
00:18:44white blooms go
00:18:45I've got these
00:18:45beautiful saxifraga
00:18:46which are nice
00:18:47and compact
00:18:47and they flower
00:18:48virtually all year round
00:18:49so great for containers
00:18:51and some of these
00:18:52little everlasting daisies
00:18:53so this is a rodanthe
00:18:55so pretty
00:18:56beautiful in the springtime
00:18:58and then I've got
00:18:59some lamium
00:18:59just to lazily cascade
00:19:01down the sides
00:19:02and I'm going to use
00:19:03matching pots
00:19:04they'll get a different
00:19:05height so you get
00:19:06double the enjoyment
00:19:07and wow
00:19:08what an impact
00:19:23I think every garden
00:19:27thanks guys
00:19:28needs a place
00:19:29where you can relax
00:19:29you know
00:19:30a calm oasis of green
00:19:31this deck area
00:19:33is the perfect place
00:19:34for it
00:19:34we've already got
00:19:35this incredible
00:19:35wall of bamboo
00:19:36and these tree trunks
00:19:38laden with green
00:19:39now when you're coming up
00:19:40with your planting design
00:19:41it's important to think
00:19:42about the microclimate
00:19:44that you're dealing with
00:19:44so here
00:19:45we've got a bit of shade
00:19:46it's a little bit humid
00:19:47so we're going with
00:19:48a nice sort of
00:19:49green tropical look
00:19:51so we're starting
00:19:52by filling the area
00:19:53with these beautiful
00:19:53big white pots
00:19:54and peace lilies
00:19:56look the name says it all
00:19:57because nothing to me
00:19:58says calm
00:19:59quite like white
00:20:00and green together
00:20:01we're mimicking nature
00:20:15a bit here
00:20:16with these half wall pots
00:20:17which you could put up
00:20:19on walls and fences
00:20:20or again you could just
00:20:21put them on an old tree
00:20:22like this
00:20:22which looks fantastic
00:20:23and we've filled it
00:20:24with plants
00:20:25that have beautiful
00:20:25cascading foliage
00:20:26like devil's ivy
00:20:28and creeping fig
00:20:29and even these
00:20:30beautiful moth orchids
00:20:31and the finishing touch
00:20:38nothing brings serenity
00:20:40to a space
00:20:40quite like the soothing
00:20:41sound of water
00:20:42there are lots of
00:20:43different water features
00:20:44available
00:20:44but these little
00:20:45plug and play ones
00:20:46are perfect for a small
00:20:47space like this
00:20:48so it really doesn't
00:20:49take much to kickstart
00:20:50your garden in spring
00:20:51whether it's sprucing up
00:20:53the lawn
00:20:53or making the deck
00:20:54look really pretty
00:20:55with some instant color
00:20:56or creating a zen space
00:20:58just tackle them
00:20:59one project at a time
00:21:00then you can really get
00:21:01to enjoy an oasis
00:21:02like this
00:21:03this program was brought
00:21:23to you by Bunnings Warehouse
00:21:24where you can bring on
00:21:26that next project
00:21:27with the lowest prices
00:21:28coming up
00:21:32he may be an MKR judge
00:21:34but he's not sticking
00:21:35to the rules
00:21:36that is my chicken
00:21:39and pale barley risotto
00:21:41that's not a risotto
00:21:42but your new favorite
00:21:44this bedroom
00:21:45is just a few sheets
00:21:46and a doona away
00:21:47from pure perfection
00:21:49well it looks like
00:21:50we're going to work
00:21:50cutting out for us
00:21:51we do
00:21:51let's get going
00:21:52and he was cute
00:21:54as a baby
00:21:54but this pig
00:21:56has grown into
00:21:57a real problem
00:21:58I'm about to meet
00:21:59a four-legged mammal
00:22:01capable of complete
00:22:03removal and renovation
00:22:04of a backyard
00:22:05alright there's still
00:22:16that little chill
00:22:18in the air
00:22:18but I have
00:22:19a warmer
00:22:20that's going to
00:22:21warm the kitchen
00:22:22going to warm the family
00:22:23it's loosely based
00:22:25on a risotto
00:22:26but it's not a risotto
00:22:27because we're using
00:22:28pearl barley
00:22:28we're cheating
00:22:29so I'm going to cook
00:22:35the pearl barley
00:22:36like I would
00:22:37a rice for a risotto
00:22:39but it's a lot more
00:22:39forgiving
00:22:40and here's what I did earlier
00:22:41so all you do
00:22:43is cook it from cold
00:22:44to hot
00:22:45simmer for 15 minutes
00:22:46the barley's sort of
00:22:47doubled in size
00:22:48it's taken on the water
00:22:49and it's not
00:22:50as hard
00:22:51as it is when it's raw
00:22:52you can do this
00:22:53the day before
00:22:54grate in soups
00:22:55salads
00:22:55whatever you want
00:22:56you're going to use
00:22:57classic veg
00:22:58so you're going to use
00:22:59your onion
00:22:59your garlic
00:23:00your carrot
00:23:01and your celery
00:23:02to make a base vegetable
00:23:03keep it quite chunky
00:23:08carrots
00:23:12so roughly the same size
00:23:14as the onion
00:23:14so this is a great way
00:23:16to get your vegetable intake
00:23:18we've got our celery
00:23:19just take the top off
00:23:21down the middle
00:23:23apart from it being
00:23:28very good for you
00:23:29you've also got the Irish flag
00:23:30just saying that there
00:23:31just so
00:23:32must be good
00:23:33a bit of garlic
00:23:35pan's hot
00:23:39splash of olive oil
00:23:41our vegetables in
00:23:44so I will say
00:23:47I'm going to add chorizo
00:23:48I'm going to cook chicken
00:23:50with this dish
00:23:50but
00:23:51if you're vegetarian
00:23:52leave out the chicken stock
00:23:54use vegetable stock
00:23:55the pearl barley
00:23:56and it is
00:23:57a stunning vegetarian dish
00:23:59the chorizo
00:24:00gives a little bit of spice
00:24:01and sort of changes
00:24:02the stock a little
00:24:03all right
00:24:09same size chunks
00:24:10Ellie always turns up
00:24:15when it's the meat element
00:24:16here
00:24:16good girl
00:24:18all right
00:24:19chorizo
00:24:20into the pan
00:24:20now we're going to add
00:24:25a little bit of herbs
00:24:26thyme
00:24:26bailey
00:24:27whatever you've got
00:24:28knocking around
00:24:28a little bit of salt and pepper
00:24:33a little bit of white pepper
00:24:38a little bit of spice
00:24:41and
00:24:43I've got parmesan
00:24:44my old favourite
00:24:45the parmesan rind
00:24:46get it into the stock
00:24:47that goes in
00:24:51give it a stir
00:24:53smells great
00:24:55right
00:24:57our veg
00:24:58our chorizo
00:24:59sweated off
00:25:00the oil's taking
00:25:01all that flavour
00:25:02of the chorizo
00:25:03now you're going to add
00:25:04your par-cooked
00:25:05barley
00:25:06so this is a generous amount
00:25:12300 grams
00:25:13will feed
00:25:13six to eight people
00:25:14it's a real
00:25:15you know
00:25:16you can feed a family
00:25:17and probably next door
00:25:18with this dish
00:25:19so what you do is
00:25:20incorporate the barley
00:25:22through the veg
00:25:23get all that flavour
00:25:24in there
00:25:24we're going to add
00:25:25a little bit of white wine
00:25:26for acidity
00:25:27about 200 ml
00:25:28stir that through
00:25:33and then we're going to add
00:25:35about a litre
00:25:36or just over a litre
00:25:37of chicken stock
00:25:38so it's quite a wet dish
00:25:44at the start
00:25:45and then it soaks into the barley
00:25:48and dries up a little
00:25:49so everything's incorporated
00:25:54we'll just let it come up
00:25:55to the boil
00:25:56and heat up
00:25:57before that
00:25:58I'm just going to prep
00:25:58my chicken
00:25:59so I've got thigh
00:26:01thigh is the best chicken
00:26:03to use for this
00:26:03forget about breast
00:26:04pointless
00:26:05will get tough
00:26:06thigh
00:26:07it's got a bit of texture
00:26:08and we've got the skin
00:26:09which is going to caramelise
00:26:10good salt on the skin
00:26:19pepper
00:26:21pepper
00:26:21so what's going to happen is
00:26:28the skin is exposed to the oven
00:26:30and obviously the meat sits on top
00:26:32of the risotto
00:26:33so anything on top is going to caramelise
00:26:38so you get your cheese on
00:26:39a little bit of thyme
00:26:44if you have it
00:26:44you can sort of see
00:26:45you're building layers of flavour
00:26:47onto the chicken skin
00:26:48alright we've just come up to temperature
00:26:53so you're basically trying to cover
00:26:57all of the dish
00:27:00you're sort of just layering the chicken
00:27:03and filling in all the gaps
00:27:05so it's sort of a chicken lid
00:27:07I will give it a little splash
00:27:14of olive oil
00:27:15goes into the oven
00:27:21200 degrees
00:27:2335 to 40 minutes
00:27:24until your chicken's cooked
00:27:26alright
00:27:3435 minutes of waiting
00:27:39is well worth the time
00:27:40look at that
00:27:42the skin has crisped up
00:27:45you've got that beautiful little flecks of thyme
00:27:47the cheese has crisped up
00:27:48spoon
00:27:49alright so you want the chicken
00:27:55chorizo
00:27:56and you want that stock
00:27:57to moisten it
00:27:58a little bit of lemon
00:28:00cheese
00:28:02as you would a risotto
00:28:04that is my
00:28:09chicken
00:28:10and pale barley risotto
00:28:12that's not a risotto
00:28:13but your new favourite
00:28:14a couple of weeks ago

00:28:43we've got heaps of tips
00:28:44from your kitchen
00:28:45to your garden
00:28:46if gardening is your passion
00:28:49check us out on 7 Plus
00:28:51where you can find all your favourite stories
00:28:53plus explore hundreds of beautiful gardens
00:28:56from all around the world
00:28:57and lots more
00:28:58want to save more water in your home
00:29:09well Adam and I are sussing out the biggest water wasters
00:29:12in your home and backyard
00:29:14to the laundry
00:29:16and there's not many people I know
00:29:18who love doing the washing
00:29:19but thank goodness for washing machines
00:29:21when it comes to the machine itself
00:29:23there's actually a lot of similarities
00:29:25between one of these
00:29:26and your dishwasher
00:29:26in the sense
00:29:27don't put on a load
00:29:28unless it's a full load
00:29:30some people do actually have
00:29:31like a low suds
00:29:32or an eco wash option
00:29:34they're always a really really good choice
00:29:36if you have clothes
00:29:38that have a lot of stains on them
00:29:39take the time to do
00:29:40some pre-stain removal
00:29:41because the less suds
00:29:43and the less washing powder you're using
00:29:44well less chance
00:29:46you're going to have to do a second wash
00:29:47but the big tip here
00:29:49is if you have to buy
00:29:50a new washing machine
00:29:51or say you've got to replace an old one
00:29:53first of all
00:29:54look for the water efficiency label
00:29:55because honestly
00:29:56it will give you all the information you need
00:29:58and go for a front loader
00:30:00as opposed to a top loader
00:30:02it is an absolute myth
00:30:04that you can get more stuff
00:30:05into a top loader
00:30:06than you can into a front loader
00:30:07do your research
00:30:09the big ones are available
00:30:10but the main reason
00:30:11why you want a front loader
00:30:12over a top loader
00:30:13a top loader
00:30:14will use an average of 110 litres
00:30:16of water
00:30:17for every single wash
00:30:18whereas a front loader
00:30:20will use about 60 litres
00:30:21so almost half
00:30:23now this is a magnificent backyard
00:30:31I mean there is a huge lawn here
00:30:33but boy this can be a hungry beast
00:30:34come summertime
00:30:35yes and that's why
00:30:36if you are watering
00:30:37you want to make sure
00:30:38that you're doing it before 10am
00:30:39or after 4pm
00:30:41that way you're not losing too much
00:30:43to evaporation
00:30:43and because Adam's such a good boy
00:30:45he's got the right hose fitting
00:30:47he's actually got a trigger nozzle
00:30:48so that means that you can actually
00:30:49water the areas that need it the most
00:30:51but then also not over water
00:30:53the plants or the areas that don't need it
00:30:54and if you're going to have a sprinkler system
00:30:56make sure you find one
00:30:57that has high water efficiency
00:30:59why would you believe
00:31:00the average sprinkler system
00:31:02uses 900 litres per hour
00:31:04that is absolutely massive
00:31:06so a good tip
00:31:07is to make sure
00:31:08when you are mowing your lawn
00:31:09in those warmer months
00:31:11you try and keep it a little bit longer
00:31:12that way
00:31:13the soil underneath
00:31:14will stay moist
00:31:15and also
00:31:16for your plants
00:31:17and your trees
00:31:17try and go drought tolerant
00:31:19that will help a heap
00:31:19and speaking of keeping your soil nice and moist
00:31:27I've got three words for you
00:31:29mulch, mulch and mulch
00:31:31just make sure you put it down
00:31:32about seven to ten centimetres high
00:31:34and you will reap the benefits from it
00:31:36and as far as actually getting rid of leaves and debris
00:31:38on hard surfaces
00:31:40don't use a hose
00:31:41instead why don't you go reach for a rake
00:31:44or for a broom
00:31:45and do a bit of manual labour
00:31:46that's right
00:31:47I mean you could even use a blower
00:31:49and as for your car
00:31:50or if you've got a boat
00:31:51when you're cleaning that
00:31:52don't do it on hard surfaces
00:31:53simply do it on the grass
00:31:55or find a friend who has a boat
00:31:56and then he can actually do it on his grass
00:31:58and if you're lucky enough
00:32:04to have a pool in the backyard
00:32:06like this house here
00:32:07you want to make sure
00:32:08in those warmer months
00:32:09that you're using
00:32:10a liquid blanket
00:32:11or a pool cover
00:32:12as this is going to stop water evaporation
00:32:15by 40 to 90%
00:32:16absolutely massive
00:32:17another great way
00:32:18that you can reduce evaporation
00:32:20is by putting some shaded areas over it
00:32:22so you could actually put some shade cloth
00:32:23or use your planting cleverly
00:32:25like they have here
00:32:26with this high planting
00:32:26yeah and you want to make sure
00:32:28that you're constantly
00:32:29cleaning those filters
00:32:30and checking the pool linings
00:32:32and around lights
00:32:33for any water leaks
00:32:34let's go check out
00:32:35one of my favourite spots
00:32:35in any garden
00:32:36now even in your veggie patch
00:32:44you can save water
00:32:45I am a massive fan
00:32:46of wicking beds
00:32:47they use less water
00:32:48your plants are just as happy
00:32:49and also it saves
00:32:50how much top weeding
00:32:51you have to do
00:32:52yeah and like this house here
00:32:53you can think about
00:32:54putting in a water tank
00:32:55I mean it's great
00:32:56for the grey water as well
00:32:58for your toilet
00:32:58and you can use it
00:32:59around the garden
00:33:00but look
00:33:00if you get your water bill
00:33:01and all of a sudden
00:33:02you notice a massive spike in it
00:33:03that's a clue
00:33:04it probably means
00:33:05you have a leak
00:33:05somewhere in your house
00:33:06so you can start
00:33:06to track that down
00:33:07and don't forget
00:33:08to check out
00:33:09the incentives and rebates
00:33:10that are available
00:33:11in your state
00:33:12we're there to conserve
00:33:13water and energy
00:33:14and reduce your carbon footprint
00:33:15because water
00:33:16is our most precious resource
00:33:18and every single drop counts
00:33:20as I travel around
00:33:23this wonderful land of ours
00:33:25I'm constantly amazed
00:33:26by the things
00:33:27people keep as pets
00:33:28I'm about to meet
00:33:30a four-legged mammal
00:33:31capable of complete
00:33:33removal and renovation
00:33:35of a backyard
00:33:36you'd better believe it
00:33:37good morning Lilla
00:33:42morning
00:33:42we're doing a little trip around
00:33:44yes
00:33:45how many acres
00:33:46have you got here altogether
00:33:46we have a total of two
00:33:47two and a half
00:33:49so when we first moved here
00:33:51it was really hard
00:33:51to buy the grass
00:33:52and keep it all looking pretty
00:33:53so I got myself some sheep
00:33:55sheep didn't eat the wheat
00:33:56so I had to get a goat
00:33:57we've got guinea fowl
00:34:01and we have some chickens
00:34:02as well
00:34:03oh look at that
00:34:11this is Beavis
00:34:12hello Beavis
00:34:13how are you
00:34:14he's a big pig
00:34:16aren't you
00:34:17living a dream
00:34:18living the dream
00:34:20living the dream
00:34:21so how did you come by a pig
00:34:23well my husband works in civil construction
00:34:25and they were in western Sydney
00:34:27and one of the workers said
00:34:29there's a pig in the bushes
00:34:30and he said no
00:34:31and came back the next day
00:34:33and here's a baby pig
00:34:35the size of a chihuahua
00:34:36so he sent me a photo
00:34:37because I've always wanted a pig
00:34:39and I said do
00:34:40I hope you're not pulling my leg
00:34:42and I came home from work
00:34:43and here's a pig
00:34:43now Lilla
00:34:44why did you get a pig
00:34:46well you said you've always wanted a pig
00:34:48why would you want a pig?
00:34:49I grew up on a sheep farm in Scotland
00:34:51and I wanted goats, ducks and pigs
00:34:53and my parents wouldn't allow me
00:34:54so I'm a grown woman now
00:34:56and I've got one
00:34:58it stayed in the house
00:34:59in a box
00:35:00and it got fed
00:35:0324-7
00:35:04it slept with the dogs
00:35:05and now it's in the regi patch
00:35:08what would you like to happen?
00:35:10because of the wet weather
00:35:11he's actually been able to dig up the fence
00:35:13and he's escaped
00:35:14and gone taking himself for a walk
00:35:16down past the neighbours
00:35:17oh really?
00:35:18so I would like to get some better fencing
00:35:20to be able to keep him
00:35:22because I'm now working more
00:35:24and I need him and attend
00:35:25let's get out
00:35:27where we can talk
00:35:28and you tell me
00:35:29what you want to do
00:35:30and I will make some suggestions
00:35:31for you
00:35:32as to how
00:35:32we house this pig
00:35:34in better circumstances
00:35:35so I'm going to talk to you about pigs
00:35:43because
00:35:44pigs are a little bit different
00:35:45to having a dog
00:35:47or a cat
00:35:47you know
00:35:48you've got to check
00:35:49with your local council
00:35:50if you're thinking
00:35:50of getting yourself a pig
00:35:51pigs are what we call
00:35:53omnivores
00:35:53you know
00:35:54they tend to eat
00:35:55what we eat
00:35:56so I think
00:35:57feeding them
00:35:58a special pig pellet
00:36:00is the ideal thing
00:36:02because that's got
00:36:03everything you need in it
00:36:04it's a complete diet for them
00:36:06so that's the other thing
00:36:08what do you do about a pig
00:36:09that wants to dig
00:36:10well
00:36:11it's a natural behaviour
00:36:13because they want to eat things
00:36:14that are under the ground
00:36:15and
00:36:16fencing him in
00:36:17is one thing
00:36:18that's important
00:36:18the best way
00:36:20of controlling a pig
00:36:21in any environment
00:36:22is electricity
00:36:23now electric fences
00:36:26are used
00:36:26everywhere these days
00:36:28particularly in things like zoos
00:36:29anywhere you go
00:36:30you'll find
00:36:30electric fences
00:36:31because that nose
00:36:33is so wet
00:36:33it makes a great conduction
00:36:35gives them a fright
00:36:36more than anything else
00:36:37and they probably do it
00:36:38once or twice
00:36:39and then that's it
00:36:39we're gonna be okay
00:36:42there's a demo
00:36:43electric fence nearby
00:36:44so let's go take a look
00:36:46okay this is an electric fence set up
00:36:52so what we're looking at here is
00:36:53this is an electric wire
00:36:54and you can notice
00:36:56if you look at it
00:36:56you can actually see
00:36:57little bits of wire
00:36:58braided into it
00:37:00this is a fiberglass stake
00:37:02so it's fully insulated
00:37:04it's about a meter long
00:37:05you can drive it in the ground
00:37:07as far as you want
00:37:08but you don't have to put it in
00:37:09very far
00:37:09and then we run our tape through
00:37:11see this is bigger and wider
00:37:13and it's easier
00:37:14for a pig to see this
00:37:15than it is to see that cord
00:37:17okay
00:37:17this is a clip that fits onto it
00:37:19that goes through there
00:37:21okay
00:37:22and you run that along
00:37:23so how often would you put
00:37:24one of those stakes in the ground
00:37:25I'd be looking at probably
00:37:26a meter and a half
00:37:27something like that
00:37:28between the stakes
00:37:29you're dealing with electricity
00:37:31so when you come to the far end
00:37:33you're gonna have to
00:37:34finish the fence off
00:37:35probably with another
00:37:36just simple insulator
00:37:37it will not cost you
00:37:39a lot of money
00:37:40to set this up
00:37:41wherever you go
00:37:42I'm with you
00:37:45what about the entertainment
00:37:49how do we entertain pigs
00:37:51good question
00:37:52ah
00:37:52well
00:37:53the obvious way
00:37:54is with food
00:37:54so
00:37:55what I've got here for you
00:37:57is
00:37:57a basic food
00:37:58that
00:37:58that
00:37:59is
00:37:59formulated
00:38:00as a complete diet
00:38:01and you can mix
00:38:02your own stuff
00:38:03in with that
00:38:04your scraps
00:38:04and what have you
00:38:05and one of them
00:38:06is great to use
00:38:07and would you feed it
00:38:08whole or would you chop it up
00:38:09I'd probably chop it into
00:38:10you know
00:38:10maybe four bits
00:38:11something like that
00:38:12really?
00:38:12it doesn't matter
00:38:13you can feed it whole
00:38:13and they will eat the lot
00:38:14yeah
00:38:15every bit
00:38:15skin and all
00:38:16it's a natural food
00:38:17it's something that I can eat
00:38:18and it's good for them
00:38:19we've gone one step further
00:38:21it's a food ball
00:38:23and inside
00:38:25look at that
00:38:26it's food
00:38:26and the idea of course
00:38:28is to roll it round
00:38:28and round and round
00:38:29and it's something
00:38:30that will entertain
00:38:31this pig of yours
00:38:33hello
00:38:46Beavis
00:38:47Beavis
00:38:48hey big boy
00:38:49come
00:38:50if you can smell
00:38:53the food in here
00:38:54no risk about that
00:38:55look at the goods
00:38:56to me
00:38:56what do you reckon
00:38:58love it
00:38:59is it a goer
00:38:59I think so
00:39:00I came here because
00:39:02you had a pig problem
00:39:03you've still got a pig problem
00:39:05but I hope I've given you
00:39:06some solutions
00:39:07I hope so
00:39:08containment
00:39:09with electricity
00:39:10entertainment
00:39:11with a slow feeder
00:39:12time I went
00:39:14I don't think I've got
00:39:15any more pigs to see
00:39:16the next story
00:39:17might be a budgie
00:39:18you never know
00:39:18a budgie
00:39:19that's a bit boring
00:39:20it's not
00:39:21budgies are boring
00:39:22I'm off
00:39:23definitely

00:40:20wow
00:40:24Jet you have been
00:40:25busy in here
00:40:26this looks fantastic
00:40:28sure I have
00:40:29it was white on white
00:40:30in here before
00:40:30it was very bland
00:40:31and we've played up
00:40:32with the colours
00:40:33and it looks really good
00:40:34I think
00:40:34yeah so you've gone
00:40:35the complete opposite
00:40:36of white on white
00:40:37and I can see that
00:40:37you've picked colours
00:40:38that are in your shirt
00:40:39I have
00:40:40what happened
00:40:40you didn't come
00:40:41dressed in themes
00:40:41I don't know
00:40:42if I can accept
00:40:42this grey in here
00:40:43but I have to say
00:40:44it is very structured
00:40:45I mean this looks
00:40:46very planned
00:40:46talk me through it
00:40:47yeah we've used
00:40:48colour blocking
00:40:49as a technique
00:40:49over here
00:40:50is going to be
00:40:51like a headboard
00:40:52behind the bed
00:40:52this is going to be
00:40:53where the bedside table
00:40:54goes and actually
00:40:55speaking of that
00:40:55I would love you
00:40:56to help me make
00:40:57a bedside table here
00:40:58and put some shelving
00:40:59above this window
00:41:00beautiful
00:41:00well it looks like
00:41:01we're going to work
00:41:01colour out for us
00:41:02we do
00:41:02let's get going
00:41:03so make this custom
00:41:13shelving unit
00:41:14for above the window
00:41:15I'm just using material
00:41:16that you can get
00:41:17straight from the
00:41:18hardware store
00:41:19now this is a great way
00:41:20to create extra storage
00:41:21in the room
00:41:22but also because it's
00:41:23going to have the
00:41:24pelvic built in
00:41:25we're going to be
00:41:25covering those working
00:41:27mechanisms of the
00:41:28curtain and blind
00:41:29now to start off
00:41:30I'm just using this
00:41:31dressed pint
00:41:32and I'm going to be
00:41:33gluing and screwing
00:41:34everything together
00:41:35to build the structure
00:41:36alright so I've just
00:41:54done some markings
00:41:55and pre-drilled my holes
00:41:57and what's going to
00:41:57happen this is going to
00:41:58be the top of our
00:41:59shelf so I'm going to
00:42:00have two uprights here
00:42:03you can lean books up
00:42:04against them or put
00:42:05whatever you like and
00:42:06then from this point on
00:42:07we're going to be
00:42:08working down so then
00:42:09from that centre line
00:42:10I'll have another
00:42:11upright coming down
00:42:12and then we continue
00:42:13building
00:42:14going to Ish
00:42:31going to pay
00:42:31light
00:42:31go
00:42:32go
00:42:33now the way this unit is going to work is I've got an existing architobe on the top of the window
00:42:38I'm going to utilise that and sit down on top of it.
00:42:41But now we need to stop the shelving unit from coming off the wall.
00:42:44So to do that, I've just got a sheet of MDF.
00:42:46It's a lot more cost-effective than this dressed pine.
00:42:49It's 19mm thick, so it's nice and sturdy,
00:42:52and that will allow us to screw through into the studs
00:42:55and hold everything in place.
00:43:08All right, so I've got the backing board attached,
00:43:23and then I've got these three uprights,
00:43:25which is going to allow me to put this last bit of dressed pine.
00:43:28Now, this is the bottom here.
00:43:30This will sit on the architrave,
00:43:32and obviously we know that this is the top,
00:43:34so now I'm just going to spin it all around,
00:43:36which will allow me to fix that base.
00:43:38And the final piece of the puzzle is to add this palmet.
00:43:58Just using the same dress pine,
00:44:00I'll simply sit it on this top edge, glue and screw it off.
00:44:04Now, if you do want the plans for this build,
00:44:07I know it's a custom build,
00:44:08but you can simply just send us an email,
00:44:10and we'll send them over.
00:44:11And how easy was that?
00:44:31That is one custom shelf with a built-in palmet made.
00:44:35And you know what the best part about this is?
00:44:37I don't have to look after the painting on this one,
00:44:39because Jet's got that covered.
00:44:43All right, Jet.
00:44:44So we're going to try and get it up on that arc.
00:44:46It looks good, doesn't it?
00:44:48It couldn't have gone any smoother.
00:44:50I'm just so happy with how these turned out.
00:45:04By adding some fabric, we've solved the problem of the missing slat,
00:45:07plus it adds a really nice layer of softness to the room.
00:45:09Oh, but what about the missing door?
00:45:12Well, that was easy to fix also.
00:45:14I've just whipped up this frame,
00:45:16and you wouldn't even know that those slats aren't there.
00:45:18So clever.
00:45:19You wouldn't know.
00:45:19Should we get them up?
00:45:20Yeah, definitely.
00:45:29All right, let's give it a go.
00:45:33Look at that.
00:45:34Perfect.
00:45:35Looks beautiful.
00:45:36Gorgeous.
00:45:36Love them.
00:45:37Two more to go.
00:45:41Nice.
00:45:42And one thing you do want to remember is you need to fix off this chain,
00:45:45because otherwise it will be a choking hazard.
00:45:52Is that a new outfit?
00:45:54Well, you can borrow it for next year's logos if you like,
00:45:56but it is actually the curtains.
00:45:57Let's get them up.
00:45:58Let's do it.
00:46:06With the bed in place, you can really see the effect of that colour blocking now.
00:46:22The bed head looks amazing.
00:46:24And you could just paint that panel and nothing else, and it would look incredible.
00:46:28Yeah.
00:46:28This room is so inspiring now, full of personality.
00:46:32And before it was white.
00:46:33No, that's exactly right.
00:46:34There is so much character in here.
00:46:36I mean, look at these lampshades.
00:46:37Where did you even get them from?
00:46:39You won't believe it, but I picked them up at the hardware store.
00:46:41They're upside down plant pots, and Charlie would be so proud of me.
00:46:44Well, he would.
00:46:45They look absolutely great.
00:46:47But I'll tell you what, what about that custom shelving?
00:46:49It has worked so well.
00:46:51I mean, you've got this palmet that's built into it also.
00:46:53And because we've painted it the same colour as the woodwork,
00:46:56it all just blends in.
00:46:58And such great storage as well.
00:46:59And then these curtains and the fabric on the wardrobes,
00:47:02it just adds that layer of softness to the room.
00:47:05I absolutely love it.
00:47:06You, ooh, ooh, ooh, I know this much is true.
00:47:14Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, I can't get over you.
00:47:22I know this much is true.
00:47:23I'm sure I'm in love with you.
00:47:29Coming up, with over 20,000 species to choose from,
00:47:33there's bound to be an Aussie native for your place.
00:47:36If you want to start creating your own native garden at home,
00:47:39where is the best place to start?
00:47:42And if you're making Clarissa's amazing pork dumplings,
00:47:46more is definitely more.
00:47:48These are perfect for freezing.
00:47:53It's so much better.
00:48:03With our amazing climate,
00:48:04it's no wonder we like spending so much time outdoors.
00:48:07But if you want a garden that is truly Australian,
00:48:10or you need to be using Aussie native plants now,
00:48:12this garden was designed by Kath Gad using strictly Australian species.
00:48:17So she's probably the best person to talk to about designing an Aussie garden at your place.
00:48:28Kath, what an absolutely beautiful garden you have created here.
00:48:31Oh, hello.
00:48:35This is sensational.
00:48:36Thanks.
00:48:37Tell me a little bit about how you got into designing strictly with Australian native plants.
00:48:44Oh, that's a good question.
00:48:45Native plants, for me, I just, I love them.
00:48:50I think they're, you know, very beautiful.
00:48:53You get lots of different colours, textures and different forms that you don't really see with exotics.
00:49:02They also grow very well here.
00:49:05The other thing about them is the different flowering times, I guess, too.
00:49:09So it's quite important when I'm designing a garden that there's, you know, things in flower in each month.
00:49:16The thing I really love is how you have created these little zones that all interconnect.
00:49:24How do you pick the materials that sit well in the site and go well with the plants?
00:49:28I guess I always use materials that age in the garden.
00:49:33So I'm not going for some, you know, pristine look.
00:49:37So I want things like sandstone.
00:49:40They get moss and lichen on them, which looks really lovely.
00:49:44They all just meld in together.
00:49:46Yeah, and I've noticed you've used a bit of steel around as well to retain as well.
00:49:49Yeah, yeah.
00:49:49That's another one of those materials.
00:49:50I love the cord and steel because it goes rusty.
00:49:52Yeah, absolutely.
00:49:53Well, should we have a look around the rest of the garden?
00:49:54Yeah.
00:49:54All right, let's head off.
00:50:06I really love how the dry riverbed just sort of draws you down into that lower space.
00:50:10It's fantastic.
00:50:11Yeah, and it also serves a purpose.
00:50:13So it's not just an aesthetic feature.
00:50:17There was some quite serious drainage issues.
00:50:20So it comes from next to the driveway and then goes under the driveway and sort of pops out here
00:50:25and then flows sporadically.
00:50:27Okay.
00:50:35So how does working with a front garden differ to the rear garden?
00:50:38Well, a front garden is always an opportunity to have something a little bit special, something, you know,
00:50:45that draws people's eye and makes a bit of a statement so that you're addressing the street.
00:50:51I always like to do some special plants that maybe people haven't seen before, like the
00:50:58grafted Eremophila with that really silvery foliage.
00:51:02The Hakea pinball, which doesn't actually grow very well here, but that's a grafted one.
00:51:07You've got Banksia blechnifolia, don't you?
00:51:08No, I haven't seen that growing outside of Western Australia.
00:51:11How have you managed that one?
00:51:11No.
00:51:12So Banksia blechnifolia is a little ground cover, Fernleaf Banksia.
00:51:16What I've noticed in the last 10 years is people's desire to sort of have a more casual,
00:51:23naturalistic garden, often even wild. So people want to come home and literally tell me,
00:51:33I want to feel like I'm in the bush.
00:51:34So if somebody wants to start with native plants, where do they start?
00:51:44Starting at your native nursery is a really good idea, and just talking to the staff there.
00:51:50All right. Well, should we go to one?
00:51:52Yeah, let's go.
00:52:04Probably the best place to start, if you're a complete novice, might be tube stock.
00:52:15Yeah, all right. Let's head there.
00:52:24What are the benefits of tube stock over larger stock?
00:52:28The benefits of tube stock are price, definitely, but more importantly
00:52:33than price is the fact that they will establish more quickly. Smaller root system, obviously,
00:52:40gets into the ground, gets used to its new environment a lot faster.
00:52:43So you get a longer-lived plant from that?
00:52:45You get a longer-lived plant, and you actually get a quicker-growing plant as well.
00:52:51And I guess when you've got something that costs eight bucks, like this does,
00:52:55you're not so worried if it dies either.
00:52:56Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
00:52:58Because inevitably some stuff is going to not make it, right?
00:53:01Yes, yes. That's gardening, that's part of the problem.
00:53:02And it also then allows you perhaps to buy three of it, or six of it, instead of just one thing.
00:53:10So you can get a bit more of an instant impact by buying these tube stock.
00:53:13Yeah, yeah. You can plant mass en masse.
00:53:15It seems like we're in a sea of tube stock where everything is the same size and height.
00:53:23How do you know what to pick out when you're designing?
00:53:25Just think about what you want the plant to do in the garden.
00:53:29So, you know, do you want something low that covers the ground?
00:53:33Do you want a little bit more height?
00:53:35Do you want, you know, a shrub that's going to cover something?
00:53:38Yep. Yeah.
00:53:39So the brachycombs are excellent ground covers,
00:53:41and they'll just sort of scramble around and reshoot. And the little purple daisies
00:53:48are fantastic for the pollinators as well.
00:53:51They work well in all styles of garden as well. It doesn't have to be a strict native garden.
00:53:55You can use those in a cottage garden or something like that. Works really well.
00:53:57Yes.
00:54:03Tube stock as well is great for native grasses, isn't it?
00:54:06Yes. Yeah, definitely. Because they grow so fast.
00:54:09Yeah. So the great example is you can buy a load of them here and really mass plant them.
00:54:13Yeah. Yeah.
00:54:17So if you want something a little bit bigger in the garden, what are your go-tos?
00:54:21One of my go-tos is this haikia. I really love using spiky, dense plants. So
00:54:30that's great habitat for small birds to hide in. And then you get these little pink or white flowers,
00:54:37which are high in nectar. This has got a great sort of new growth to it, doesn't it?
00:54:41Yeah. So this is an amazing small tree. It's a dwarf angoffera. It has the big angoffera cluster of
00:54:50flowers. And it's a little bit of a mallee habit. So it kind of comes up in a vase shape.
00:54:57So it'd be good for maybe a medium-sized garden. Yeah. Something like that would work well.
00:55:01Absolutely.
00:55:10Now, this is one I recognise. I've used this one a little bit.
00:55:13Yeah. This is Banksia roba, swamp Banksia. Again, this could be a small tree shaped into a small tree
00:55:21by under pruning or it's a fantastic large shrub. And there's not that many Banksias that will cope
00:55:27with wet feet. So it's a really good one for around here. Yeah. Especially like at the bottom of a site,
00:55:32you know, that's going to collect a little water. That's good. Yeah. Yeah. The thing I like most about
00:55:37natives is the fact that they can handle all the conditions. I mean, we've got a windy day today.
00:55:41My wig is flying around, but they seem to be okay with it. Yeah. They're fine. They're not bothered.
00:55:46Look, it's been a great day learning all about these native plants. And I think on a couple of my next
00:55:50shoots, I'm going to be planting some natives. Excellent. Thank you so much. Flip it over.
00:55:58And ta-da! Pot stickers. Have you ever found yourself letting perfectly good fruit and veggies
00:56:06go to waste at the bottom of your fridge? Well, you're going to love this month's issue of Better
00:56:10Homes and Gardens magazine. It's full of ideas to save both your food and your money.

00:56:21seed cake. Plus, whip up easy homemade spice mixes for Dad for Father's Day. Grab this month's issue and
00:56:27you'll get access to 20 bonus recipes using mints, from delicious chicken burgers through to meatloaf,
00:56:34plus loads of easy weeknight dinners.
00:56:43Now, who doesn't love dumplings? If my daughter could have this for breakfast, lunch and dinner, she would.
00:56:49Today, I'll be making pan-fried pork dumplings, aka pot stickers, and it's going to be delicious.
00:57:02I'm using pork mince today, but you can use any type of protein. First, you have to get some dehydrated
00:57:10shiitake mushrooms that you rehydrate in hot water. Chop them up and just add it to your mix.
00:57:21Here, I've got three teaspoons of ginger juice, oyster sauce, white pepper,
00:57:33sesame oil, sesame oil. That will give you that beautiful nutty flavour in this. Sugar.
00:57:45I've got soy sauce, and then I've got rice wine vinegar,
00:58:02corn flour, and an egg.
00:58:06And don't forget the green onions. Three stalks. I usually use the whole stalk.
00:58:30Give them a good stir. Make sure you combine all of the ingredients together with the seasoning.
00:58:36Oh, the onion's making my eyes tear.
00:58:43And salt.
00:58:49It's ready to be wrapped.
00:58:57Gauji wrappers are slightly thicker and chewier than wonton wrappers.
00:59:02They're great for pan frying and also steaming. It's better to underfill them than overfill them.
00:59:09And what I'm doing here, I'm just doing three pinches at the top.
00:59:12These are perfect for freezing.
00:59:26Last one. Put some damp paper towel on your dumpling so that it doesn't dry out.
00:59:32And now for a good dipping sauce.
00:59:36I used fresh red chillies for this dipping sauce.
00:59:40Get the large one if you don't want them to be fiery hot.
00:59:43Next, a knob of ginger.
00:59:51Just roughly take off the skin. Doesn't have to be perfect.
00:59:56One garlic clove. One or two limes.
01:00:06A splash of sesame oil for fragrance.
01:00:12Dash of salt.
01:00:13And a pinch or two of sugar.
01:00:24Whizz that up.
01:00:28You want it finely chopped but not slushy.
01:00:35I'm just going to put this aside and I'm going to get onto my dumplings now.
01:00:39Heat up a wide non-stick pan.
01:00:45Put a little oil just to cover the pan.
01:00:50While the pan's heating up, I'm going to make the slurry.
01:00:54This slurry makes a beautiful lace around your dumplings.
01:01:00It is very impressive looking and it makes you look like you're a professional.
01:01:06We start off with the slurry with 200 ml of water.
01:01:17Two teaspoons of corn flour.
01:01:21One teaspoon of plain flour.
01:01:24And half a teaspoon of white vinegar.
01:01:33Give it a swirl.
01:01:36And I'm going to start putting my dumplings into the hot pan.
01:01:49You want them quite tight together.
01:01:53Cook it for about a minute or two before you add your slurry.
01:02:04Cover it for another two to three minutes and then take the cover off.
01:02:18Now we've got to wait till the slurry turns into a crispy lace.
01:02:23If my daughter was here, she would be running to wolf this down.
01:02:26Just loosening out the sides.
01:02:39Once you see that it moves like this in your pan, it's ready to be flipped.
01:02:44So just get a plate that covers your pan.
01:02:57And flip it over.
01:02:58And ta-da!
01:03:06Pot stickers.
01:03:09Look at this.
01:03:10It's crispy and chewy and absolutely delicious.
01:03:15Well, we've almost come to the end of the show and I'm going to say, Adam, lifting the lid on just how much water the average Aussie household uses every single year has been eye-opening for all of us.
01:03:31So, yes, we've given you some little habit-changing ideas.
01:03:34They might seem tiny, but added up, they make a big difference.
01:03:38Yeah, definitely agree.
01:03:39It's just been a lot more mindful and not taking our water for granted.
01:03:43And there's a heap more info online, too.
01:03:45Yeah, there certainly is.
01:03:45We hope you enjoyed the show.
01:03:46We'll see you next week with more Better Homes and Gardens.
01:03:49Bye-bye.
01:03:50I don't take you for granted either.
01:03:52You're beautiful.
01:03:53Next time, it may look like an ordinary house, but it's wired a little differently.
01:04:03I'm going to show you a house a robot built.
01:04:08Celebrate spring with a flower explosion.
01:04:11Wild meadows in spring.
01:04:12Just look at that colour.
01:04:13I can't wait to show you around.
01:04:17It feels like the world's gone topsy-turvy and that includes your dinner.
01:04:21I am cooking a pork cutlet with the stuffing on the outside.
01:04:28Charlie's taking his love of recycling to the next level, so you can too.
01:04:33I will show you how one man's trash can become another man's treasure.
01:04:38Plus, Clarissa's got your next dinner party menu all wrapped up.
01:04:42Delicious fish cakes in a parcel.
01:04:45Who wouldn't want one of these?
01:04:48Is this our most comfortable project ever?
01:04:51Well, this beautiful curved frame is going to be the answer to all your relaxing needs.
01:04:56And Dr Harry's cooking up a clever contingency plan.
01:05:00What do you do with a dog that's all alone?
01:05:03Just have a look at what's in front of me.
01:05:07That's next time on Better Homes and Gardens.
01:05:10What do we have?
01:05:11What do you do with a dog that you have to take a long life later?
01:05:13It's not that terrible.
01:05:14I don't think that's why you're in front of me.
01:05:15It's going to be a long life since I'm out in front of me.
01:05:17I think it's going to be a serious process.
01:05:18I hope everybody wants to take a long life since I was at home.
01:05:19That's so hard.
01:05:20I think it's going to be something I do with a dog that you were in front of me.
01:05:21So how do you want to discuss, like, do you want to get out of the dog?
01:05:22I don't think I'm out!
01:05:23I think I don't know.
