Ted Karras on Bengals' Struggles on Offense, Week 5 Matchup With Detroit Lions
Transcript
00:00I don't think we have a here we go again I can only speak for myself but I'm I'm worried about
00:04what I got to do in the next play and we had a good group in Denver credit to them two week two
00:09weeks in a row toughies so um got to do something to score some points. As a captain are you kind
00:16of looking around at practice just making sure everybody is where they need to be or is that
00:20never a concern that attention and energy is there? You know one thing about me is you know
00:26with stuff like this you can never break my spirit trying to lead this team with energy
00:30and spirit and we got a football game Sunday afternoon to be ready for it's our job to be
00:35ready for it and we're going to be ready so um you know I think again we've we've had good practices
00:39I think in the moment we've let these games get away from us and it's uh it's it's a damn shame
00:46really because you know we're doing some good things but it's corny to point out the good things
00:51when you're getting uh you know really letting games get away from you so um we all feel that
00:57and um really my biggest role is to just bring the energy every single day and be ready to go
01:02help help these men be ready to go. It seems like every week there's a tough front this week no
01:08different Aiden Hutchinson obviously you're facing DJ Reader I mean they got a lot of dudes in the
01:12trenches. They do um DJ Reader what a great man great teammate great player um still playing really high
01:18ball high level ball um you know they're a good team we got a good football team coming into town
01:24Sunday afternoon so we gotta be at our best. We got rookies starting on either side now these guys
01:29seem like they're made of the right stuff but it's a challenge how difficult is it for the entire unit
01:34to have two guys with so little experience? You know I think they've been doing a great job and
01:38you want to point out some positives I think we have two ascending guards that hopefully are the
01:44guard duo here you know with the program's health for the better part of a decade so
01:48really proud of those guys um you know we had a really tough draw up in Denver and I thought we
01:54shut them down pretty solidly but obviously not enough to score any points or really do anything
02:00to affect the box score so a lot still to work on but you know we're out here we're ready to go and
02:06getting getting ready and we got the Detroit Lions now. The average four yards to carry next week was
02:11it a step in the right direction? I think so I mean we ran 52 plays though so I mean what are you
02:16going to say? I mean there are positives to build off of but I don't want to be overly corny about
02:21that we got to do whatever we can to put points on the board three points will win you zero games in
02:26the National Football League. So what's what's the key like what has everything like what what has to
02:32to change? I think we got to convert their downs I think we got to eliminate pre-snap penalties
02:36play ahead of the sticks and punch it in the red zone and it's just all individual execution
02:41working together as a unit as position groups and as an offensive team so we're you know no one's
02:47hanging their head we're getting it from all angles guys we hear you um and that is what it is and we
02:53deserve that but no one like I said earlier you can't break my spirit you're not going to break
02:57this team spirit and we're going to come out and be ready for a football game Sunday 4 p.m.
03:01How much in the run game are you guys tinkering every week right now versus just
03:05let's just do what we do better is that is there or is it a combination?
03:09I think it's always a combination in the NFL I think there's obviously stuff you got to scheme up
03:13per team and personnel wise team wise scheme wise but obviously we have our stalwarts that we always
03:19carry um you know I you know I I don't think we're ever going to be the highest volume run team in the
03:26world but when we do get the chances to run the ball we need to be effective we need to be efficient
03:31and we need to execute with physicality and you know try to try to let Chase Brown get get Chase
03:36found loose a little bit. I think one of the underrated skills of Joe Burrow is is this cadence
03:42does Jake have that in him and how big of an advantage is it being at home both in pass pro
03:47and in firing off in the in the run game? I think um it affects more in pass I think that's the
03:52that is the you know highest trait of home field advantage is the silent count on the road for the
04:01home team for the defensive ends especially um so I mean you know two weeks on the road
04:06two toughies on the road glad to be back home we're in the jungle let's go beat the lions
04:13they're all go beat the lions all again so we're going to see for the upper dale
