U.N. security council approves new gang suppression force for Haiti

00:01Radios across Haiti were buzzed on Thursday with news that the United Nations has approved a new gang suppression force.
00:09The 5,500 strong unit will replace the understaffed Kenyan mission and has the power to make arrests.
00:17Yet residents like Rodrigue Pierre have lost all faith in foreign interventions, especially those involving the United States.
00:25In my opinion, the multinational mission there should have left already.
00:31They are not accomplishing anything substantive.
00:34If another mission enters the country and the United States is involved, nothing meaningful will happen.
00:39The United States represents a danger to Haiti.
00:42It is the only country I would not want to come here.
00:45If they send forces from El Salvador, Russia or China, I have no problem.
00:49But as soon as the United States is involved, for me, it becomes a bargain and we turn into a puppet.
00:55There are always resolutions and missions aimed at Haiti.
01:03If they wanted to do something, they would have already done it.
01:07I don't know their true objective.
01:10If it's to destroy the country, I don't believe in them.
01:13Maybe, if they allowed Haitians to move freely, we could thank God.
01:19But I doubt it.
01:20And I don't think any Haitian believes that white people will do something for Haitians.
01:26This comes as gang violence has killed nearly 5,000 people since last October, displacing over 1.3 million,
01:36the largest upheaval in Haitian history, creating a dire reality that challenges any official optimism.
