Thousands displaced as gang violence surges in Haiti

A new wave of gang violence in the Haiti's Ouest and Artibonite departments has left dozens dead and displaced thousands, according to the World Food Programme.

00:08in a nation that has been left reeling by spiraling gang warfare for five years
00:13following the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise.
00:21These are newly displaced people who have just fled the recent attacks that took place in the
00:26Plein-Kal-de-Sac area in the commune of Cite Solue in Port-au-Prince.
00:33They arrive with nothing and are in urgent need of assistance in order to survive.
00:41This Shalom church in Delmas 33 is now sheltering more than 2,000 newly displaced people.
00:47Some families recount the horrific moment when they had to flee their homes in search for safety.

01:01Now we have nothing, no money, no roof over our heads, and we don't know if or when we'll be

01:12A new multinational anti-gang force is now being deployed to Haiti to replace the under-equipped
01:18and under-funded multinational mission to support the Haitian police.
01:22But so far, only a contingent of 400 Chadian soldiers has arrived in Port-au-Prince.
