Haiti: gangs continue to terrorise local population

Residents in some areas of Port-au-Prince have returned to what's left of their homes following an assault by armed gangs. But with gangs now controlling an estimated 90% of the capital, some are too afraid to return.

00:00Here in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, residents are hard at work cleaning up what's left of their homes.
00:09The area was seized by gangs around a year ago before they suddenly left in recent weeks and told residents they could return.
00:17Some have seen their entire livelihoods destroyed.
00:20I'm an entrepreneur. I own a funeral home, a hardware store, an apothecary and a house rental service.
00:34In November, since November 13th and 14th, I've been left with only a pair of pants and sandals.
00:39Police have told residents that it's unsafe to return to the area, a warning that some are taking on board.
00:59There's no way I'll return to live here. I'm not going to live with the gangs.
01:12Others, meanwhile, have ignored the warning since returning to the capital mainly controlled by gangs is a rare occasion.
01:20It's really serious. They took what they could and broke everything.
01:26What they couldn't take, they broke and left behind.
01:31Here's the oven, but they couldn't take it, so they took the motor.
01:37An estimated 90% of Port-au-Prince is now controlled by armed gangs, who have tightened their grip on Haiti since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.
