00:00I have the hardest time understanding why this is suddenly all about money for everybody.
00:07I don't even think you can make the point that that has affected anything.
00:11The Niners have told us that it will, but you point this out constantly.
00:16The contract has not taken effect yet.
00:19They've planned for it for years.
00:22So he was their guy before they signed the deal.
00:26He's still their guy now.
00:27So this whole idea of once you sign a contract, now you're Superman.
00:31You're supposed to carry a team by yourself.
00:33The last show was calling them carriers.
00:35I'm with you.
00:36I don't think that exists.
00:37I think that that's just kind of the movie script writer in all of our heads.
00:41We want this to be super romantic.
00:43Oh, you're 55.
00:44Go out there and do your thing, man, and carry us.
00:47Like, that's not football.
00:48That's not the way it works.
00:50And if after one loss you want to make this about the contract, no issues here.
00:56I just want you to admit you didn't want Brock on the team in the first place.
01:00That's my take.
01:01If you're already there, you didn't want him.
01:04You thought this was a terrible contract the second it was signed.
01:08And a lot of people did.
01:09Right.
01:10So if you feel that way, feel that way.
01:11But, like, just know that about yourself.
01:15You didn't want him.
01:16Right.
01:16If you're already there, you didn't want him.
01:18And if you feel that way, know that he's making less than Trent Williams, Fred Warner,
01:24and I dare you to try and come up with a third player who's making more this year on a cap hit than Brock Purdy.
01:31I could give you 27 guesses and you won't get it.
01:34Oh, wait.
01:35Well, no, there are others.
01:36Chris McCaffrey is.
01:37No, he's making 8.369 on the cap.
01:40Oh, on the cap.
01:41Cap hit.
01:41There's one more player whose cap hit is greater than Brock Purdy.
01:46Who were the ones you already mentioned?
01:47Trent, 21.1.
01:49Fred, 16.1.
01:51And I guess if you went to.
01:54Not George?
01:55George, I guess he's hurt.
01:56So he's not.
01:57Nick and George, yes.
01:59But they're hurt.
02:00So there's one more who's not hurt.
02:01One more.
02:02Making more than Brock Purdy on a cap hit basis.
02:05Oh, my God.
02:06Let me just.
02:06I'm scanning.
02:07So, yeah, Nick and George, for sure.
02:09My bad.
02:10Yes, but they're on the injured reserve cap.
02:12All good.
02:12I'll.
02:13They're not listed on the active cap because they're not active.
02:18Boy, and you've already said, like, I won't get it with a million guesses.
02:22Right.
02:22So now I'm, like, looking for these diamond in the rough types.
02:25I mean, sure.
02:27And it's not Christian.
02:29One more player.
02:29Who's made.
02:31I'm just going to say, because it's obviously a weird one.
02:34I'm going to say Huff.
02:36It close.
02:37Okay.
02:38The answer is Yotur Grossmato.
02:40No way.
02:40Making 9.473 on the cap.
02:43Good for Yotur.
02:44All you people who are Brock Purdy making 53 million people.
02:49Yes.
02:49Go ahead and put a pin in that until next year when he's making 53.
02:54And then we can look at the roster and say, well, they should have A, B, C, D, and E.
02:58And then we can all talk about the Trey Lance deal gone wrong because those guys would be here and those guys would be, you know, mainstays and they're not.
03:06And so, Kyle and John, you've got to go.
03:09We can all have those conversations then.
03:11But right now, for me, the conversation is more about, is Brock going to be better than he was last week?
03:17Let's go to Dave in Fresno.
03:19Hi, Dave.
03:19Appreciate your phone call, man.
03:21What's up?
03:23Yeah.
03:24You know, I was going to, you know, ask you about that tweet, but you kind of explained it.
03:29But to me, it's not about the money.
03:32Well, Dave, can you explain the tweet?
03:35Like, are you talking about what I tweeted?
03:39Yeah, what you tweeted.
03:40Tell everybody what I tweeted.
03:43You say, if you're debating Brock Purdy's contract, two games after he signed it, one of which he won, you didn't want him in the first place.
03:52Correct.
03:53Correct.
03:54Yeah.
03:55Then that's fine.
03:56And to me, to me, it's not about the money.
03:58Like I said, he's played 38 career games.
04:01So, you know, sample size, pretty, pretty big, you know.
04:05So, in the last 19 games, or half of his career games, he has 26 TDs and 20 INTs.
04:15That's not good.
04:16That's not good.
04:18So, in my issue with the whole Brock conversation, it's always an excuse when it's not looking good.
04:26It's Kittle's not there, or Trent's not trending anymore, or CMC's lost a step, or we lost Bosa,
04:33or it's always something.
04:36But when things are humming and everybody's there, everybody's healthy, he's the best quarterback ever.
04:42You know what I don't hear?
04:43I don't hear this in Tampa Bay.
04:45They're missing Tristan Wirth, their best player.
04:47You don't hear a peep.
04:48They're missing Godwin.
04:50You're missing Mike.
04:51It's like, at the end of the day, what they're going to look at is Baker Mayfield.
04:55They're going to look at Baker Mayfield.
04:57Did you win, and how did you play?
04:59With Brock, there's always a caveat of, well, his foot hurt, or the grass was too hot that day,
05:06or, you know, it's always, oh, he'll get better, or the play calling, or it's always something.
05:11All right, Dave, I get the voices that you hear, but let me ask you something.
05:15I'd love to challenge you a little bit.
05:17Let's talk about all the other players on the 49ers.
05:21Let's talk about them.
05:22Because the last, that stretch of games you're talking about, for the most part,
05:28I know this year's been kind of odd, and they're off to a three-in-one start,
05:31even though they're not playing great football,
05:33but for the most part, that stretch of games that you're talking about,
05:35the 49ers have been a bad team.
05:37Agree?
05:40No, not entirely, but if you let me explain, if you let me explain.
05:44Sure, go ahead.
05:44I think last year, okay, you didn't have McCaffrey.
05:48A lot of the stuff we knew going into the season, you didn't have Greenlaw,
05:52and then you had injuries during the season, IU.
05:54I thought they had a good enough roster to compete at a higher level than they did.
06:00Okay, I think the injuries kind of get overblown a little bit,
06:03because some of the injuries you can kind of see come in,
06:05and Trent, Kittle, McCaffrey, you know, some of those things,
06:09they've been injured pretty much throughout their whole career.
06:11So a lot of that is them just not having good enough depth.
06:16But, yeah, were they as good as 2023?
06:19No, to answer your question.
06:20They were not.
06:21Okay, like when you look at last year's 49ers team,
06:25who do you think was like where you would point your finger
06:28as maybe what the problem is?
06:31Like what if I just made it broad, the offense or the defense?
06:36Offense.
06:36We have an offensive coach.
06:38Offense does not look good in a very long time.
06:42I don't have them in front of me, Dibs.
06:43You always do.
06:44Oh, yeah.
06:45DVOA, Niners offense last year versus Niners defense last year.
06:48I just have the points for, they were 13th out of 32.
06:52Points against, they were 29th out of 32.
06:55Dave, like, again, you've got your take, I've got mine.
06:58The Niners sucked on defense last year.
07:00One of the worst run defenses I've seen in recent times,
07:05certainly in the Kyle Shanahan era.
07:07What does that have to do with Brock?
07:09Brock, maybe nothing, maybe something.
07:12My point is, is do you notice how you're only focusing on what happens to Brock
07:17when everything around him is or is not in good shape?
07:22Couldn't I do that with all of the players?
07:25Like, why don't we talk about Bryce Huff for a second?
07:28And Dave, thank you very much for the call.
07:30Really appreciate it.
07:31Like, how did the defensive line perform when their best player wasn't there?
07:36Nick Bosa's not there, and all of a sudden, for the first time in 10 years,
07:40they never even breathe on the quarterback.
07:42Yeah, that's fair.
07:43No quarterback hits, no quarterback socks.
07:46So this idea that we're not allowing a trickle-down effect for the quarterback
07:50simply because he's famous and makes a lot of money, I think is silly.
07:56This is true for every team, every player, all the time.
08:00He made the Baker Mayfield comp, and he didn't have Mike Evans last week,
08:05and, well, they lost.
08:06They lost.
08:07To Philadelphia.
08:07Right.
08:08A team that racked up 180 yards of total offense.
08:10And they did have Godwin, and they have a first-round receiver
08:13who might win rookie of the year, by the way.
08:15He's incredible.
08:16He is, and, you know, Baker was 22 of 40, and he threw a pick,
08:21and they lost that game.
08:22So we can cherry-pick whatever we want,
08:24and this is kind of where I take a little issue with my guy Matt Steinmetz
08:28where we draw a line from the Baltimore game right before Baltimore
08:32where he was awful, and then we look at the numbers from there going forward.
08:36And last year, you and I have talked about it, and I think Brock was worse than you think.
08:42But either way, you look at how he played and how they did.
08:45They went 6-11.
08:47The offense was mediocre.
08:48The defense was bad.
08:50The special teams got a guy fired.
08:52So it is complimentary football.
08:54And this year, the one thing I do want everyone to remember,
08:56they're 3-1, and they're 3-1 when they can't run the ball.
09:02You've had a backup quarterback win two games.
09:04You had to fire a kicker.
09:06Your special teams are still not good.
09:09And your red zone offense is among the bottom five in football.
09:13And you're the only team that doesn't rush for a touchdown.
09:15Like all these things, if you want to look at all these factors and then go,
09:19it's Brock.
09:20Okay, Brock's played in 2-4.
09:22It's the O-line.
09:24It is the everything.
09:25It's the everything.
09:26It's the injuries.
09:27It's a lot of things.
09:28And the fan base sounds like they're 0-4.
09:30We really do.
09:31Right.
09:31I want, like, if you just take a view from 10,000 feet and listen to all the media
09:36and look at everything online, it really does sound like the Niners are 0-4.
09:41And they're 3-1.
09:42There are only two teams with a better record than them in all of football.
09:46The Eagles and Bills.
09:46Right.
09:47So you're tied for third in best record in the league,
09:50and yet we all want Brock's contract ripped up.
09:53Some want Shanahan run out of here.
09:56Some want McCaffrey either bubble-wrapped or used more.
09:59Folks, you're 3-1.
10:01Like, can we all have some perspective?
10:03I get it.
10:03I get the concern, sure.
10:05But, yes, they are 3-1, which is a miracle.
10:08Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line.
10:10This is somebody agreeing with Dave in Fresno, and here's, I'd like to rebut this.
10:14415 says,
10:15Because I completely agree, with Brock, it's always a caveat.
10:19Here's what I'd say to anybody who feels that way today.
10:22I would argue that it's actually what you're choosing to listen to.
10:26Whenever there's a Niner loss, you want to only make it about the quarterback.
10:32A lot of you won't hear anything else.
10:34Because he makes 53 million, which he doesn't even do yet.
10:38But because he makes 53 million, that's what I feel a lot of you are very hard-headed.
10:44It's very black-and-white thinking.
10:47The Niner's lost.
10:48Brock Purdy.
10:50That's all you want to hear.
10:52And if anybody brings up anything else, no matter how much data or fact is behind it,
10:57as you just pointed out, Dibs, a special teams that got somebody fired,
11:01a defense 29th in DVOA,
11:03a run defense that was absolutely melted butter.
11:07Like, all of these things, if you bring them up,
11:11a lot of you believe it's a caveat or an excuse.
11:14No.
11:15No, these are things that are actually happening.
11:18Brock was terrible on Sunday.
11:21Who wouldn't say that?
11:23But if you want to only look at that,
11:26well, then you're obviously missing a ton of crap that happened in that game.
11:31Again, more special teams gaffs.
11:34Yeah, I had someone hit me on Twitter.
11:37This is a great example of it.
11:38Someone hits me on Twitter after the game.
11:40He goes, how are you going to excuse Brock?
11:41He had four turnovers.
11:43And I went, perfect.
11:45See, you just assessed.
11:47You affixed every turnover to Brock.
11:49Right.
11:49One of them was a completed pass to his tight end who dropped the ball.
11:53You don't want to allow for all the receivers who dropped all the balls.
11:57You don't want to allow for Travis Etienne taking off down the left sideline.
12:01You don't want to allow for special teams that played horrible yet again.
12:05Yeah, kick the turn for 86 yards.
12:07You don't want to allow for that.
12:08So there's got to be a middle ground.
12:10These aren't caveats.
12:11These are things that are happening.
12:13And the Niners last year were not a very good football team.
12:17Brock was not as good as he was in years past.
12:20That's obvious.
12:21He also wasn't bad.
12:23He wasn't bad.
12:24He wasn't as good.
12:25He wasn't bad.
12:26And so far this year, he's 1-1.
12:28Yeah, and he actually, the team is 1-1, and he's also 1-1.
12:32And I just was thinking about this as you were going through that.
12:35And I'm not a Brock defender or a Brock apologist.
12:38But if you want to look at Sunday and give Brock the loss, I'm here for that because he was bad.
12:45Other things were bad, but you're the quarterback and you can't be that bad.
12:49Brock takes the L.
12:50But then you have to go to the opener.
12:51And I think it's only fair to give Brock the W where they get the ball back with 3 1⁄2 minutes to go,
12:59down by 3, and he's at his own 32, and they go down and they score a touchdown and they win the game.
13:06And he was the quarterback.
13:07And you can think what you want to think about the ton just throw, the lob ball to no one.
13:12I happen to think that it was a 50-50 ball and the Niners made the play.
13:16But Brock gets as much credit for that as he does blame for the interception he threw to McCaffrey,
13:21which I thought was a bad throw.
13:23This also was probably a bad throw, but it's process versus results.
13:28And I'm a results guy, and the result was touchdown, winner.
13:32So if you want to look at Brock on Sunday and say, you lost that game, okay, I kind of agree.
13:38But you also have to look at week one and say, Brock, you won that game.
13:41And I do.
13:42I mean, those are the rules.
13:44You just have to pick which rule you want to follow.
13:47Sure.
13:48And I respect that.
13:50If you want to pin Sunday on him, fine.
13:52But then, yes, credit him for week one.
13:55Or, for example, if you want to say, I hate the contract, but you said it in May, great.
14:00Great.
14:01You hate the contract.
14:02You may be right.
14:03You might be right.
14:04And I might be wrong.
14:06And those of us who are on the side of, I like the contract and I like the player, we might be wrong.
14:10And time is going to tell on that.
14:12But those of you who celebrated it in May and then are participating in a discussion about it today, those are the ones I don't get.
14:22I don't get you.
14:23I don't.
14:24I don't look like, who on earth signs a five-year long-term agreement and starts wanting to go about face after one loss?
14:33That would be a small sample size Sam is who that is.
14:37I thought schedule Sam.
14:39This would be Steve.
14:40Sample size is Steve.
14:41I apologize.
14:42Steve is the one.
14:43Yeah.
14:43I didn't see the name tag.
14:45Small sample size Steve.
14:46All right.
14:47All right.
14:47I don't know.
14:48We can do that.
14:48We can do that.
14:51All right.
14:51All right.
14:56All right.
14:56All right.
14:57All right.
