00:00All right, so the C.J. Gardner-Johnson cut is the biggest news of the week for the Texans.
00:05Texans play the Titans this Sunday, noon kick.
00:09Seth and I have you for Texans Countdown starting at 9 a.m.
00:13You can hear the game right here on Sports Radio 610.
00:16This was D'Amico Ryan's.
00:17This is kind of a back and forth with the media yesterday.
00:21Obviously, the first questions right out of the shoot were about the team cutting C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
00:26Here was the back and forth between D'Amico Ryans, after which we will play what I thought was the most revealing answer
00:34in a press conference that didn't reveal a ton about the thought process behind cutting C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
00:40Just started. I know everyone saw the news where we released C.D.
00:45With C.D. the best.
00:47Unfortunately, we just moved on.
00:49For me, every decision I make is always the best decision for us to move forward.
00:56And so, now we're here and we're on to the Titans.
00:59Why did you think it was in the best interest of the team?
01:02Yeah, because it was my decision to move on.
01:04I know it was best for my team.
01:05So, was it performance or something else?
01:08There's been a lot of news reports on it.
01:10Yeah, I'm not going to go into all the details of it.
01:13It was coming from me, the head coach.
01:15It was my team.
01:17It was the best for our team.
01:19And that's why I made the decision.
01:20So, I'm not going into any further details on it.
01:23Did you all seek a trade partner or did you get any interest from other teams?
01:27No.
01:28Okay.
01:29That was very, very concise.
01:30That was very concise.
01:31Yeah, that last part.
01:32If you're wondering what the question, if you didn't quite hear it,
01:35the one word no was the answer to was there any interest, trade interest out there.
01:40Did you seek a trade partner or was there any interest?
01:42And he said no.
01:43No.
01:43And that press conference pretty much went like that anytime he was asked about the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade.
01:50And the emphasis on, without quite as much gusto as Bill O'Brien,
01:56it was that it's all about the team and doing what's right with the team.
02:00There were some times where I thought, okay, he might be making a point about C.J. Gardner-Johnson here
02:04when he talked about how good the practice was yesterday and all those things.
02:08But, you know, you've got to stretch a little bit to think that.
02:12We did get a we're on to the Titans at one point.
02:15It was at the very beginning.
02:16Coaches do that all the time.
02:18Like, that's their attempt to steer the conversation before any questions have been asked.
02:22And when I was listening to it yesterday and I heard that, I'm like, hey, you're about to get –
02:26I know you're on to the Titans.
02:28You're about to get four C.J. Gardner-Johnson questions, just so you know.
02:33I know that old stuff.
02:34Why are you bringing that up?
02:36We're on to Christmas.
02:38That affair was weeks ago.
02:41We're on to Thanksgiving.
02:42Yeah.
02:42Why can't you trust me now?
02:44I thought this was the most revealing answer because the media started asking non-C.J. Gardner-Johnson questions.
02:53And then later on in the press conference, Cody Stutes steered it back and said,
02:58was the team surprised that C.J. Gardner-Johnson got let go?
03:03Yeah, I don't think it was a surprise.
03:06If it is, that's the league.
03:08It's always surprises each and every year in the league.
03:12So if it's a surprise to them, it's okay.
03:16Everybody will be all right.
03:17Just a quick reset for everybody.
03:19Refocus on what we need to focus on.
03:21And then, again, I spoke about we're moving forward to how can we focus on beating the Titans.
03:26Okay, we're good, man.
03:27We got the part.
03:28It was the beginning part.
03:29He basically said he didn't think that the team was surprised that C.J. Gardner-Johnson got cut.
03:34I think that everything about this situation speaks to that there was a level of drama above and beyond the level of drama.
03:42You know, guys do kind of get in silos on an NFL team, and not everybody's always aware of what drama there is on the offensive side of the ball.
03:51Remember that Houston 93 documentary, Warren Moon.
03:56Warren Moon was basically just learning of some of that drama as he was being asked about it on a documentary 20 years later.
04:04You know, it was 25 years later.
04:06So, I think maybe on the defensive side of the ball, and, you know, based on what D.J. and Serge and other people had said,
04:15that it seemed like there was tension there.
04:18Guys might have been surprised that the Texans pulled the trigger on it,
04:21but I don't think it was probably a surprise that there was something brewing.
04:24I just thought it was interesting that D'Amico acknowledged that guys probably weren't surprised by it.
04:29You know, that would be like the normal, if you're trying to just steer the conversation away from the obvious drama behind the scenes with this,
04:36because the guy got cut after, you cut your starting safety after week three.
04:40Something was going on.
04:41The answer would have been, were guys surprised?
04:43Like, I don't know, you'd have to ask them.
04:44You know, it was a decision I made.
04:46The fact that he said, I don't think guys were surprised by this, I thought was very revealing to me.
04:50Like, that was way more revealing than anything he said in the back and forth to start the press conference yesterday.
04:56That's, um, the, what, didn't they have another situation like this?
05:00Was it, was Aaron Colvin fired mid-season?
05:03No, uh, yeah, yeah, he, I think he got cut after, well, he, but yeah, like maybe after that, um, that debacle against the Saints in the, uh.
05:11Yeah, but he, I mean, he was the starter on opening day.
05:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:14So it happens, I guess.
05:15Yeah, yeah, um, it, there wasn't drama like this, but it was, it was a weird situation.
05:21Yeah.
05:21Um, I think that the, the whole thing, somebody yesterday was asking me like, hey, Seth, isn't it weird that all his information came out immediately after C.J. Gardner Johnson, um, got cut well.
05:33The, you know, we haven't heard anything about Joe Mixon, we can't get a peep.
05:37And, no, it's notable, but it's not weird.
05:40This is a tight-lipped organization.
05:41Very.
05:41When there are leaks, they tend to be intentional leaks.
05:44And I think that's, so it's not weird.
05:47You might, you might say it's notable.
05:48Yes.
05:49Notable, yes.
05:50Does it mean that the, boy, the Texans with C.J. Gardner Johnson?
05:55Yes.
05:56Very possibly, yes.
05:57Yes, yes.
05:58But it's kind of all in line with the way that it played out.
06:00And with his history, I think I'm really astounded at how many people have taken up the banner for C.J. Gardner Johnson as if he's not a guy who has been on five different teams in the last five years.
06:15Probably going to be on his sixth team in five years.
06:17Right.
06:17Right.
06:18Very shortly.
06:19I just, like, it is what, it is what, the guy's got a track record of being pretty damn disruptive.
06:25Yeah.
06:25Like, if you just said, if you'd taken names out of it and said, this team that saw itself coming into the season as a Super Bowl contender, after week three cut their starting safety, you'd be like, wow.
06:37Are you kidding me?
06:38Who is it?
06:39And then you say, C.J. Gardner Johnson.
06:41You'd be like, oh, okay.
06:42Well, it's a little bit like Fromber's Beaning Salazar incident.
06:47If you didn't know, if somebody just described the incident to you and then told you to guess which player it is, 100% of Astros fans who pay attention would have said Fromber.
06:57Likewise, if you describe this exact scenario and explain that it was somebody who wasn't playing his responsibilities, was pointing the finger, had interpersonal issues, oh, okay, that sounds exactly like the version of C.J. Gardner Johnson I've heard about.
07:10So, is it notable that so much information was leaked?
07:14Yes, notable, but I don't think it's weird necessarily.
07:17I think it falls in line with how a tight-lipped organization where the leaks are intentional, this is how these things tend to happen.
07:23I wonder if the Texans are out of the head case business now.
07:28You know, they dipped into the Deontay Johnson pool at the end of last year.
07:34I think, than anything else, that was a team that had lost Stephon Diggs and had just lost Tank Dell both to knee injuries.
07:41Like, you were really thin at wide receiver and he was out there and he's super talented.
07:45But he was complaining about his lack of targets to the coaches after a 20-point playoff win.
07:54Like, that's the kind of guy he was.
07:56So, they cut him loose after that.
07:57And now the C.J. Gardner Johnson thing has honestly been a more costly disaster than that.
08:04Because you got $8 million spread out over the next couple years sitting on your salary cap for C.J. Gardner Johnson.
08:11And it's in the middle of an 0-3 start.
08:12Like, this one feels way worse than the Deontay Johnson one.
08:15I just wonder if they are going to maybe, if they look at these two situations and say,
08:20All right, let's stay out of the head case business here.
08:23Okay, there's two guys that I don't think fit into the head case category necessarily.
08:27But they've had interpersonal issues before or off-the-field issues before who are currently in the Texans organization.
08:34Okay.
08:34Jimmy Ward.
08:35Yep.
08:35But I don't ever look at Jimmy Ward as a head case.
08:37Jimmy Ward is kind of, I think Jimmy Ward has that kind of hyper-competitiveness but knows how to channel it better.
08:43And he had an issue with Kyle Shanahan when he was in San Francisco.
08:46Oh, about playing slot corner, yeah.
08:48Yeah, about the way they were using him.
08:50But, like, by and large, until this recent incident, it's not like he's been looked at as a head case or anything like that.
08:56They voted him a captain of the team.
08:58But he's had notable, you know, he's had some notable drama.
09:02For sure.
09:02But I don't think he's in that same category.
09:04The other guy would be Damon Arnett, who, this is where it's, you always have to draw a line between, okay,
09:10is a guy, there's crimes against oneself and, well, and crimes against society.
09:19Yeah.
09:19I think he's had crimes against himself and crimes against society.
09:22But in a team context, I don't remember seeing a lot of drama about that.
09:26It's just that he's, the guy's got a lot of issues.
09:29He's currently on the practice squad.
09:30Yes, yes.
09:31But it's a different, like, there's guys that can have a whole lot of issues but still be good teammates
09:36and still not cause drama on a team.
09:39So I kind of put those guys in a different bucket.
09:42Like, Damon Arnett's got some, he's had some serious issues and he's worked through them and he's still working through them.
09:47But it's just, it's not a divisive character the way, like, a locker room cancer type of character.
09:53No, that's a really good point.
09:55That's a good point on that.
09:57Tyler Milner noticed maybe a petty version of C.J. Gardner-Johnson, I guess.
10:03T-Mill tweeted this yesterday evening.
10:05Just noticed that C.J. Gardner-Johnson at some point today went and deleted a handful of his most recent tweets,
10:11which had the hashtag, hashtag H-Town made with the little Texans logo after it.
10:16Yeah.
10:17I saw Charles Robinson, the Yahoo writer, was talking with Mike Florio, I believe, if I remember correctly.
10:23And Charles Robinson framed this, I don't, I can't remember if it was Rob, anyway.
10:28Somebody, somebody, somebody framed this as kind of a scapegoat thing that, like, well, when things are bad, you got to do something.
10:35And it's ironic that it's the Texans' offense that's the issue here, but you get rid of a guy on defense.
10:42That's the, I think that's from people just looking at it from 35,000 feet.
10:46It makes sense if you look at it this way.
10:48The way I look at it is, this is a team right this moment that needs to be carried by its defense.
10:54There appear to have been at least several instances in three games that were all decided by a touchdown or less,
11:00where C.J. Gardner-Johnson may have cost the team a touchdown just by playing outside the system.
11:06In low-scoring games, by the way.
11:09Yeah, it's not a scapegoat.
11:11It's a, we don't have any room to spare right now for stuff like this because we need this defense to carry the team as long as it can
11:20until hopefully the offense catches up.
11:22So, I don't look at it as a scapegoat thing.
11:24I think it is, I think of it as a very nuts and bolts.
11:27We'd rather have M.J. Stewart out there who won't actively try to destroy us.
11:33Sabotage.
11:33Yeah, versus somebody who can make some nice plays on the ball here and there,
11:37but he's doing it by taking too many gambles.
11:40Yeah, yeah.
11:41Boy, there's a little bit of juice yesterday for this matchup on Sunday,
11:45which is probably, around the league, probably one of the less juicier matchups.
11:49It's two 0-3 teams.
11:50Apparently, LeJarius Sneed of the Titans, he's their best cornerback, was at,
11:57I found the audio, but it's kind of, you know, it's not great radio audio,
12:00but just to describe what happened, he was asked around his locker in open locker room yesterday
12:05with the Titans about Nico Collins and multiple times said,
12:08who?
12:09About Nico Collins?
12:10Yeah.
12:10That got back to Nico yesterday in open locker room with the Texans.
12:14I love these.
12:15Like, did you hear what so-and-so said about you?
12:17Here was, Nico Collins responded to LeJarius Sneed.
12:20So, thoughts on going against Sneed on the other side?
12:25Yeah, it's going to be fun.
12:26Can't wait for the matchup.
12:29Can't wait to get back on the field with the guys and play again.
12:33You know, getting back at that with my teammates and my brothers.
12:37Going there, rocking out, getting my swag back.
12:38He was asked about you, and he said who a couple times today.
12:42Okay.
12:43Yeah, he knows who I am.
12:45Yeah.
12:46Yeah.
12:47There's a little bit more.
12:48Nico has asked further about LeJarius Sneed.
12:51If somebody doesn't know you, what should they know about you after Sunday?
12:54Should they know?
12:55S***.
12:56No, my bad.
12:57Yeah, I'm a dog.
12:58You know what I'm saying?
12:59I'm just me.
13:00I don't say much.
13:01I just play.
13:02You know what I'm saying?
13:02You can talk all you want.
13:03I'm not hearing it.
13:04You know, just line that s*** up.
13:07Yes, sir.
13:08I like the last part.
13:10Line that bleep up.
13:11Yeah, yeah.
13:12You guys can guess at home, whichever word you use.
13:17This is the thing.
13:18I went back through in the game logs, and listeners fact-checked me on this.
13:21I didn't go through sorting it right now.
13:22I just went back through the game logs of both these guys,
13:24and I don't think they've ever faced each other.
13:27Just because, look, they both had injuries.
13:29Yeah.
13:30And Nico especially.
13:31When LeJarius Sneed was with the Chiefs,
13:34a good chunk of that was before CJ Stroud was here,
13:38and then, you know, or Nico was injured.
13:42And all of that.
13:43But then also, LeJarius Sneed missed a bunch of time last year.
13:46He did, yeah.
13:46When he was with the Titans.
13:47So, I don't think these two have ever faced each other.
13:50So, this will be an introduction for both of them.
13:53Yeah.
13:54And it would be, I mean, it's a bold move,
13:57talking smack about how you don't know who the guy on the other team is
14:01when you're on one of the worst teams in the league right now.
14:05So, but I applaud him for his confidence.
14:08Let's just, now let's do this, Nico.
14:10Is there.
14:11Let's just, let's.
14:14Please.
14:14Yeah, yeah.
14:15Is there any chance LeJarius Sneed didn't know who Nico Collins is?
14:18Any, is there a 1% chance he didn't know?
14:20No, I don't, no, no, no.
14:21Yeah, especially, there's no way he would admit to it if he genuinely didn't,
14:24I think.
14:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:25Because this is, it's Wednesday, it's Wednesday of game week.
14:28That's true.
14:29You've already watched film and everything.
14:30Good point, good point.
14:31That would mean you were sleeping through,
14:33you were sleeping through the entire game planning meeting,
14:36installation, all of that.
14:37I'm just doing that thing that DJ Bien-Aime did to D'Amico earlier this week
14:41where he was like, okay, so you definitely weren't yelling at Nick Cayley
14:46on the side, right after D'Amico had said, I was yelling at the ref.
14:51Yeah, I just, I just, I just want to make sure.
