02:02Boxing After Dark blows into the fabulous Forum again.
02:06Nearby, the movie capital of the world watches as the storybook saga of Marco Antonio Barrera and Kennedy McKinney continues to unfold.
02:15Seven months after their battle of the year here at the Forum, they return on the same card.
02:20Many current and former Mexican champions on hand as celebrated Mexican champion Chiquita Gonzalez is honored in retirement tonight.
02:28The same Mexican fans and fighters come to honor two warriors, Barrera and McKinney, as they seem to head toward another showdown next year.
02:37Welcome back to the fabulous Forum, where it all began for Boxing After Dark.
02:43Hello again. I'm Jim Lapley. We'll start the telecast by telling you in advance, for better or for worse, no heavyweights on this boxing card.
02:53Take that however you like it.
02:54Only fights in the 122-pound weight class, where for the last seven and a half months, every landed punch has been fraught with meaning.
03:02That's how long it's been since the fight that many call the fight of the year between Marco Antonio Barrera and Kennedy McKinney.
03:08Tonight, you'll be seeing both of them against separate opponents.
03:11Working with us, as always, HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant.
03:14And Larry, so much has been written and said about the first battle between McKinney and Barrera that the question on the minds of many boxing fans tonight has to be,
03:23why aren't they fighting each other again, and when will they be doing that?
03:27Jim, right now, after a fight like they had, the last guy either one of them wants to see in the ring opposite them is the other guy.
03:36They need time to gather their forces for a rematch.
03:40That was a great fight for boxing.
03:42It was a great fight for the fans.
03:44It was even a great fight for them, but not necessarily a great fight for the health and longevity of the fighters.
03:52What they want to do right now is build up toward a bigger fight down the road.
03:58So we're here building a bridge, in effect, toward a rematch that will be more meaningful financially for these fighters.
04:06Hopefully they don't stumble while they're on this bridge.
04:11And as we're building the first fight between Kennedy McKinney and little-known Nestor Lopez,
04:15it's our privilege always on Boxing After Dark to be working with a man who many believe is the best all-around fighter in the world,
04:22168-pound world champ Roy Jones, eight years ago, a teammate of Kennedy McKinney's in Seoul, South Korea,
04:28when McKinney won an Olympic gold medal.
04:30Kennedy said to us yesterday, Roy, that when he fights Barrera again, as he expects to do,
04:35he's going to have to box and stay within the boxing envelope.
04:37He wants to work on that tonight against Lopez.
04:40Can he do it?
04:40Well, he can do this, but it would be very difficult against a fighter like Lopez,
04:44mainly because this guy is not supposed to be a Kennedy McKinney or a Marco Antonio Barrera of this weight division.
04:52Therefore, if something happens, Kennedy's going to step up and say,
04:55hey, you're in the ring with Kennedy McKinney, and I have to show you this.
04:58So I don't think he'll be able to do it so easily tonight.
05:01However, when he fights Barrera, he will because that is the only way that he can win against Barrera.
05:06All right, let's go into the ring where both fighters are ready for our first main event of the evening.
05:10There's a look at young Nestor Lopez from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico,
05:15making his first trip ever to the United States.
05:19He took this bout on relatively short notice within the past couple of weeks.
05:22As you can see, he's a power puncher with 14 knockouts in his official dossier,
05:29and he says he's going to go straight at that man, Kennedy McKinney.
05:33McKinney, as you know, has only lost two fights in his career.
05:37The former champion in this weight class lost to Liani Bungu, South Africa,
05:41in an upset and then lost in that sensational 12th round technical knockout performance
05:46against Marco Antonio Barrera.
05:48earlier this year.
05:53Kennedy McKinney expected to have all of the physical and tactical advantages
05:57in this fight against a fighter from the Yucatan Peninsula who freely told us yesterday
06:01he watches a lot of boxing on television, but he has never seen McKinney
06:05and doesn't know anything about him.
06:07Tale of the tape between Kennedy McKinney and Nestor Lopez,
06:10and Kennedy had trouble making the contracted weight of 124.
06:14He was a half pound over, had to take about an hour to sweat it off, got it done,
06:18has a height advantage and a reach advantage.
06:21Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
06:23The Kennedy McKinney-Nestor Lopez fight is scheduled for 10 rounds.
06:28There is no standing eight count, no three knockdown rule.
06:31The referee, only the referee can start, no, the referee or the doctor can start the fight,
06:35and he can be saved by the bell in the 10th and final round only.
06:38Jim!
06:39All right.
06:43Thank you very much, Harold.
06:44Now let's go up to Michael Buffer for the pre-fight introductions.
06:49Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to the Great Western Forum,
06:52home of the Lakers and the Kings,
06:55serving the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area here in Anglewood, California,

07:29Executive Director Richard DeCure.
07:31The timekeeper tonight is John Lixie.
07:34The three positions at ringside will be Dr. Robert Karnes, Dr. Paul Wallace, and Dr. Adam Karnes.
07:42The three judges scoring this contest on a 10-point must system are Pat Russell,
07:48Marty Salmon, and Dick Young.
07:50And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action,
07:53your referee, newly inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Marty Dankin.
07:58And now, ladies and gentlemen, 10 rounds of boxing in the junior featherweight division.
08:06Introducing first, in the red corner, wearing red and green with white trim and weighing 122 pounds,
08:13he brings a professional record of 16 victories with only one defeat and two draws.
08:1814 of his 16 victories are by knockout.
08:23Ladies and gentlemen, from Merida, Mexico,
08:27here is Nestor Chino López.
08:32And his opponent across the ring in the blue corner,
08:40wearing red and gold and weighing 124 pounds.
08:44In 1988, he captured Olympic gold and now, as a professional, has a record of 29 victories.
08:5117 by knockout with only two losses and one draw.
08:55And he has won two world title belts.
08:58Ladies and gentlemen, from Memphis, Tennessee,
09:00presenting the two-time junior featherweight champion of the world,
09:06Kennedy King McKinney.
09:16You got it? Come and go.
09:18You got it? Come and go.
09:28That's gloves.
09:29Talk us to manos.
09:30Good luck.
09:31When I went there.
09:34Kennedy McKinney told us that when he does fight Barrera again,
09:39if it happens to come off, he wants to do
09:41what Sugar Ray Leonard did in his rematch with Roberto Duran.
09:45Box.
09:46Let's see if he can box
09:49for a full fight.
09:52He's got the kind of temperament
09:54that hasn't allowed him to just box in the past.
10:02McKinney starts off working behind the left jab.
10:07And the young man from the Yucatan
10:09has indicated that he'll go straight at
10:11the former junior featherweight champ.
10:15Hands up.
10:16Both fighters seem to be feeling one another out right now.
10:32Kennedy actually went so far as to say to us, Roy,
10:35that if he saw an opportunity for an early knockout,
10:38he wouldn't necessarily pursue it aggressively
10:40because he wanted to get in some boxing work.
10:43Hard to believe that he could pass up the chance to whack the guy
10:46if, in fact, he thought it was possible.
10:48I know Kennedy McKinney.
10:49If he sees an opportunity to sit this guy in those trunks,
10:52he's going to do it.
10:54It's a fighter's instinct to do exactly that.
10:57Kennedy McKinney, with 270 amateur bouts prior to his professional career,
11:02has been in this a long time.
11:15One thing you also have to worry about when you try to go out and not knock a guy out
11:18is that he can't take a chance and lose to this guy.
11:21If he lets this guy gain too much confidence,
11:23then he's going to have a problem.
11:25Gino Lopez hoping to stay as relaxed as he would be
11:42if he were fighting his hometown of Merida in the Yucatan Peninsula.
11:45And so far, Lopez shows no particular fear
11:48or even any particular respect for Kennedy McKinney.
11:52No, he does not.
11:54And Kennedy has to be very careful of Lopez's head
11:56because he's coming straight in with his head down.
12:03Gino Lopez, on his first trip ever to the United States,
12:07spent the entire week in an airport hotel.
12:12Said he never really left the hotel.
12:14And he's leaving tomorrow morning to go back to Mexico.
12:17So not exactly a tourist visit.
12:20No, he's not.
12:20He's here strictly on business.
12:22We thought he might take one day
12:23to go over to the Universal Studios Tour
12:26or something like that.
12:41Then seconds left in round one.
12:44As we go to the corners between rounds,
12:46your interpreter in Nestor Lopez's corner
12:49will be Ray Torres.
12:50Good counter right hand by McKinney in close
12:53to punctuate the round.
13:04You have to be aware of what the guy's doing.
13:09Be careful.
13:09He's trying to get you from the outside.
13:12Only with the left.
13:13That's all he's got.
13:14So you need to keep your hands up
13:16and keep after him.
13:17And he's taking the chances inside.
13:21Move, move, move, move, move, move.
13:23Move off the jab.
13:23Move off the jab.
13:24He's going to run into it.
13:26All right.
13:27It should be noted here that Kennedy McKinney's trainer,
13:33Live off the tab, the both of them, he's going to run into it.
13:41It should be noted here
13:44that Kennedy McKinney's trainer,
13:48Ken Adams, is in Australia tonight with another fighter
13:52fighting for a junior welterweight title.
13:55Kennedy McKinney threw 51 jabs by punch-out numbers in round number one,
14:04landed only 14 of them.
14:06He'll have to step up the accuracy rate on the jab
14:09if he's going to set up that power right hand,
14:11which just landed flush as he fired it to the chin of Nestor Lopez.
14:17And to be honest with you, Jim,
14:19I don't think he put all his power into that right hand
14:22because I think he really wants work.
14:25And I'm not saying that that's the best thing to do, but...
14:28Well, that's what he said was the plan yesterday.
14:31Box, stay within the envelope,
14:33try to get the six or seven rounds of work boxing
14:36that he feels as though he needs
14:38as the right kind of preparation for another Barrera fight.
14:41Somebody's bleeding.
14:43Yep.
14:48There's a spot of blood on the back
14:50of Lopez,
14:54which means it came from McKinney's glove.
15:00But there's no visible blood on Lopez's face.
15:02What about that, Roy?
15:03The fans are not too interested in all these rounds
15:06that Kennedy wants to go either.
15:07No, that's right.
15:08They want to see him unload those right-hand shots
15:11he was firing against Barrera back in February.
15:14Kennedy believes he has new respect
15:19from Mexican and Mexican-American boxing fans
15:22as the result of the great heart
15:23he showed in that performance.
15:26I think he has new respect from everybody.
15:28Unquestionably.
15:29It's one of those losses that did more for him
15:31than a lot of victories would have done.
15:32Well, he says it did more for him
15:34than any of his previous victories.
15:36I certainly had no idea he was that good of a fighter.
15:39I'll tell you this.
15:49Of course, shortly after winning
15:50the Olympic gold medal in 1988,
15:53McKinney saw his professional career
15:55ruptured by early problems with drugs.
15:58Says he's been clean for a number of years now.
16:00He's recently adopted the Muslim faith
16:02and says he will soon be making a pilgrimage to Mecca.
16:06His manager, Akbar Mohammed,
16:08has helped to steer him in that direction.
16:12And sometimes people need something else like that
16:15to keep them out of trouble.
16:16Well, he himself said that it would help him
16:18with his continuing rehabilitation from drug drivers.
16:34The crowd gets a little bit restless.
16:35Mr. Lopez trying his unpolished style
16:39against Kennedy McKinney, brave, aggressive.
16:42McKinney, obviously wary of Lopez's head
16:45when the Mexican fighter comes in.
16:47Let's go.
16:50Yes!
17:05You have to work a little faster, you are too slow.
17:07I
17:14Got the air in because
17:22What I'm gonna get me to move it up again and let him run into the shot what's greater the line ahead a little bit
17:27I told him to
17:29I
17:33Want me to relax a new
17:37I think that's the one to follow me about trying to get around
17:44Nesta Lopez is an aztec warrior descendant of aztec india
17:59You
18:02Kennedy mckinney sticking with the jab as round three begins
18:05Lopez is corner telling him he would have to be busier so he tries to go downstairs and get to mckinney's body
18:13Referee marty dinkins warning mckinney against grabbing lopez's head
18:18The power mckinney i'll be trying to get this over with as quick as possible to hurry up and set up the showdown between
18:25myself and barrera
18:29I
18:32Even if for no other reason that the guy
18:35Has a lot of potential to accidentally headbutt him and the last thing you want is another big cut
18:40On your facial road map going into a big fight like that there you go
18:45He can go back and work on his skills
18:47He's allowing this guy to get comfortable against him roy which could set lopez up the fight at a higher level than might otherwise be the case
19:04Yes
19:06Yes, and it also would make lopez start to fight with more confidence
