00:00Petition for either of the champions in the junior middleweight division.
00:03All right, well, we'll see what happens.
00:04Meanwhile, we're going to look forward now to the second main event of the evening.
00:08Arturo Gotti trying to revive his reputation after a loss in the last fight against Angel Manfredi.
00:14Tonight's opponent, Ivan Robinson.
00:15Big change for Gotti since that last loss, Roy Jones.
00:18He has dumped his longtime trainer, Hector Rocha.
00:21And now he moves forward with Bob Waring, who's made a mark in the sport as a physical trainer,
00:26a fitness guy, but has never before been the head trainer for a boxer.
00:31What kind of choice is that for Gotti at this stage of his career?
00:34Well, it all depends on what Harding has learned in this boxing game.
00:38He's been around boxing long enough to have learned an awful lot about boxing.
00:41Now, you hate to see a guy go away from his original trainer,
00:44but Arturo Gotti is already the fighter that Arturo Gotti is going to be.
00:47Everybody knows what Arturo Gotti brings.
00:49He knows what he brings.
00:51He's been bringing that since he was a kid.
00:52Who can change it?
00:53So why change it?
00:54Go work on changing something else.
00:55That's probably why he has a strength trainer trying to make different changes.
00:59Well, we'll see what changes Bob Waring makes, if any,
01:02in Gotti's inimitable and already well-defined style as a warrior.
01:07Tonight, Larry, Gotti goes against Ivan Robinson.
01:09The one previous time we saw him here on HBO,
01:12he threw more than 90 punches a round in losing to Philip Holliday,
01:15who threw 120 punches per round.
01:17Those numbers and Robinson's style as a mover and a boxer,
01:21Is he going to do damage to Gotti the way so many of Gotti's previous opponents have?
01:26I've got a scoop for you, Jim.
01:28That DNA on Monica Lewinsky's dress, Gotti's blood.
01:32Everybody cuts Gotti.
01:33It's what makes Gotti, Gotti, the drama queen of the boxing world.
01:39The interesting thing about Robinson before this fight
01:41is how much praise he's heaped on Gotti,
01:45as though he's trying to soften him up for the gloves
01:48that he intends to do some cutting up with later in the fight.
01:52He says that Gotti may be from Jersey City, but he's a Philadelphia fighter.
01:56The highest praise a Philadelphia fighter can give to another fighter.
02:01He says about Gotti, what God had in mind there was a fighter.
02:05And he also says when you have him hurt, that's the time to get away from him.
02:11What Gotti has said is you don't bring a knife to a gunfight.
02:16Gotti may have the bigger weapons, Jim, but knives do cut.
02:20And you don't necessarily need a knife to cut Arturo Gotti.
02:23You can do it with a spatula.
02:25At any rate, we get ready to bring the two fighters into the ring,
02:28and as we do, we take a look at the tail of the tape
02:30between Arturo Gotti and Ivan Robinson.
02:32You can see that they are separated by one year in age.
02:35Robinson, an inch the taller, two inches longer reach.
02:38They weighed in within a pound of the 135-pound limit,
02:41and Gotti has put on 16 pounds overnight.
02:44He was totally dehydrated at the weigh-in.
02:46Robinson has only put on 8 1⁄4 pounds.
02:50So Gotti will have an 8-pound weight advantage
02:53and the translated punching power advantage as he goes into the fight.
02:57Rules of the bout with Harold Letterman.
02:59The Arturo Thundergatti-Ivan Robinson fight
03:02is scheduled for 10 rounds once again
03:04using the rules of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.
03:07There is no standing 8 count, no 3-knockdown rule.
03:10Only the referee can stop the fight,
03:12and you cannot be saved by the bill in any round,
03:14including the 10th and final round.
03:16Jim.
03:17All right. Thank you, Harold.
03:19First into the ring will be Ivan Robinson.
03:24Had a colorful amateur career
03:28and won a lot of amateur glory in titles,
03:31but he lost three times to Oscar De La Hoya
03:34and then lost at the Olympic trials in 1992,
03:37so he fell short of the measure of success
03:40he had hoped to attain in that phase of his career,
03:42and in some ways, Larry, he's still trying to make up for it.
03:45Now, I like the way he ran into the ring also, Jim.
03:48He came here for a fight.
03:51The last time I remember somebody running into the ring like that
03:54and down the runway was a guy named Buster Douglas in Tokyo,
03:57and we were wondering what the heck did he have in mind.
04:00And a closer look at Ivan Robinson,
04:03who has not won by knockout in three years.
04:08And there you see the huge volume of punches
04:11that both he and Holliday threw in that memorable fight
04:15a year and a half ago.
04:18So now Robinson waits,
04:20and to the familiar strains of Rocky,
04:23here comes the most Rocky-like fighter in the sport,
04:27Arturo Thundergatti.
04:28Well, he isn't bleeding or puffed up yet.
04:41He also has a version of that fade haircut, I guess,
04:45with the blonde locks on top.
04:48So I guess his colors now are black and blue and blonde.
04:55Or bleeds.
04:56Black, blue, and bleeds.
04:58Black, blue, and white.
04:59We've got a full house in the upstairs room at the Convention Center
05:12because fans love Thunder Gotti and his style.
05:17Bob Waring, as we told you, replacing Hector Rocha as the trainer for this former 130-pound champion.
05:25There's going to be a question as Gotti moves up in weight of how much punching power he takes with him.
05:32And you saw the number that said that the last five opponents have combined for a connect percentage over 50% against Gotti.
05:39In short terms, he gets hit too much.
05:41I want to make one correction. According to Larry Hazard, who told me in the ring after our interviews,
05:48he did not tell the referee to watch for an injury to Mashinsky.
05:52He was merely asking Mashinsky whether the cut came from a butt or from a punch.
05:58In association with Valley's Park Place Casino Resort and Budweiser, the undisputed, undefeated king of beers,
06:07this Bud's for you presents the HBO Boxing After Dark main event of the evening, 10 rounds, lightweights.
06:18Ring officials assigned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, your judges at ringside are
06:24from Ardsley, New York, Malvina Latham, from Landing, New Jersey, Ed Leahy, and from Cedar Grove, New Jersey, Steve Weisfeld.
06:35Your referee for this event, from Newark, New Jersey, Earl Morton.
06:43Morton.
06:43Introducing now the principal's first in the red corner to my right, wearing the blue trunks with the gold trim.
06:53He weighs in at 135 and three quarter pounds with a professional record of 25 victories, two defeats, and 10 wins coming by way of knockout.
07:07He hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, introducing mighty Ivan Robinson.
07:19Robinson.
07:21His opponent in the blue corner, wearing the black trunks, weighing 146 pounds,
07:30with a professional record of 29 victories, two defeats, 24 wins coming by way of knockout.
07:39Heatboxes out of Jersey City, New Jersey, ranked number seven in the world by the Budweiser ratings of Fight Game Magazine,
07:49former IBF Junior Lightweight Champion of the World, Arturo Thunder Gatti.
08:02Gatti, 10 rounds, lightweights.
08:06Y'all both received the same instructions.
08:08I expect you to be my command.
08:10I want a good clean break and protect yourself at all times.
08:13Keep your punches up, touch gloves, and good luck, fellas.
08:15Go on now, Morton.
08:16Gatti told us that he was sick of having to fight a desperate fight.
08:23We'll see if he can do anything about it here.
08:26These two guys were together in Brunel Whitaker's training camp before his fight with Oscar De La Hoya in June of 1997.
08:33They know each other well.
08:34They like each other.
08:35Ivan Robinson said he's a terrific guy.
08:38I think of him as good friend.
08:39We'll still be good friends after the fight, but tonight we're going to get it on.
08:43And Robinson comes out throwing roundhouse right to try to get Gatti's attention from the beginning.
08:50And Gatti misses with a wild left hook in return.
08:53Interesting piece of opening aggression by Ivan Robinson, who lands a right hand across the top.
08:59Maybe he's trying to cut Gatti in the first round the way Angel Manfredi did.
09:02Yeah, he is, but if he's not careful, he's going to get caught with a big punch.
09:07And if he gets caught with that big punch from Gatti, it's going to be dangerous.
09:10Well, the right hand is the vulnerability of Gatti.
09:14That's what he's been training to change by taking a sideways stance to his opponent rather than straight ahead.
09:21I don't know if it's working so far, Roy.
09:25But already you see the style that Robinson wants to employ.
09:29Entering scoring points, trying to begin and finish the exchanges and then get back out.
09:34He wants to go in and move away.
09:37There are some big punches that are until Gatti really, too.
09:41Ivan Robinson with a tremendous start in round number one.
09:44And here it is, a minute into the fight, and Gatti's left eye is already puffing.
09:52This is what happened when two guys know each other well.
09:55They don't have to waste any time.
09:57They've never sparred together, even though they spent weeks together in Whitaker's camp.
10:02It's a little unusual, given the fact that they're the same size, that they didn't spar.
10:06And Robinson said, it never really occurred to me at that time that we might fight somewhere down the road.
10:11It was only later when I started thinking, wow, I like him so much.
10:14I might have to fight him.
10:16Good body shot by Gatti with the left hand.
10:22But another storm and return from Robinson.
10:26Landed a right hand across the top.
10:32Good left hook by Ivan Robinson.
10:34Oh, hard left hook by Gatti.
10:46Robinson is taking these punches pretty good right now.
10:52You can tell we're boxing out the dark already.
10:55Oh, yeah.
10:55This is a boxing out the dark round one.
10:58No question.
10:59No question.
10:59This round reminds me a little bit of the 10th round of Bo Holyfield 1.
11:14First half of the round has belonged to Robinson.
11:16Second half of the round has belonged to Thunder Gatti.
11:19This is a good fight here, Jim.
11:27They know how to find each other, that's for sure.
11:30If you want to see guys who are going to hit and get hit, you found the right address tonight.
11:36HBO's Boxing After Dark.
11:38Doesn't get much better than that.
11:48I've said that a few times over the years.
11:51Sometimes it even gets better than that.
11:53Sometimes it even gets better than that.
12:00Get back in the game plan, okay?
12:05He's following the guy.
12:07You've got to take the ring off him.
12:08They're following him.
12:09You're trying to kill him, okay?
12:11Okay?
12:12Okay?
12:13Come here, sit.
12:14You're doing great.
12:15Stay in the body.
12:16Stay in the body.
12:17But you've got to go in behind the jab, okay?
12:19You've got to go in behind the jab.
12:20And you've got to keep dropping to the right, okay?
12:23Look here.
12:24Arturo.
12:25Arturo.
12:26Arturo, listen to me.
12:27You don't have to kill this guy, okay?
12:29There you go.
12:32Well, so much for him not having to fight for desperation.
12:39Practically from the first three seconds of the fight.
12:43And you saw that the left eye is already swollen and puffing.
12:47Gotti smiles as he stalks Robinson across the ring.
12:51And referee Earl Morton pulls him back.
12:53In round one, Ivan Robinson threw 112 punches and landed 57 of them.
13:01Gotti, 27 out of 80.
13:03More of Gotti's were power shots.
13:05Well, in step one of Robinson's plan was to damage Gotti's chronically swollen left eye.
13:24He's accomplished that.
13:26Well, Robinson's condition is going to be a thing for him here.
13:30He has to be conditioned to go some time because I don't think his punch power is going to knock Arturo out right now.
13:34He's going to have to ram down a little more before he can knock him out.
13:38And a little...
13:39Right cross by Gotti.
13:40Arturo can knock him out because Arturo has that one post power.
13:45Gotti just punishing Robinson to the body and to the head in the first minute of round two.
13:53Those big shots take a lot out of you, though, Jim.
13:55Both throwing him and catching him.
13:56And Ivan claimed that he's never been in better condition for a fight than is the case here.
14:01He learned from Phillip Holliday what it means to out-condition your opponent.
14:06Well, he's been in Philadelphia, Jim Moore, since he was nine years old.
14:11And this looks exactly like that.
14:13What would another loss do to Gotti's career, Larry?
14:35Well, it wouldn't do him any good.
14:39I'll tell you what, it wouldn't hurt him too bad, though, because people love to see a guy that fights like this.
14:51Well, there's certainly nobody in the sport more worth buying a ticket to see if style is the issue.
14:56But he's got to keep winning to be marketable.
15:17Robinson giving as good as he's getting and sometimes better.
15:20This requires no commentary.
15:24If you've ever seen boxing before, and you have even the vaguest sense of when it's good, you know what you're looking at.
15:37The thing you have to wonder is with Arturo got it coming off the loss to Manfredi, why do you match him up to another boxing?
15:43Why don't you match him up to a puncher?
15:44Yeah, particularly a guy who can move the way Robinson can.
15:52It's easy for him because you stand in front of him.
15:55Use your tag, keep moving, make him round easy.
15:58Make it easy.
15:59Come on, pop the tag, step around, step around.
16:01You've got to keep going around, this way or that way.
16:05Keep going.
16:06Arturo, take your time.
16:08Don't try to kill this guy.
16:09Get in your rhythm, okay?
16:10Get in your rhythm.
16:11You're going to take this guy a little into a few rounds, okay?
16:14And you've got to think defense, okay?
16:16Hands up.
16:17You're doing a great job keeping him, but don't be afraid to fall away from that right hand, okay?
16:21You're following the guy.
16:23This is a battle of one guy going and then the other.
16:26Here you see a fusillade of punches from Gaddy upstairs, downstairs.
16:32Two good left hands, and now you're going to see Robinson answering later in the round.
16:36That big right uppercut looked about the hardest punch in the fight so far.
16:46And your eyes might pop at first, and the high connect percentage for Robinson, over 50%, 52% to this point in the fight.
16:54But remember, the graphic showed you before the fight, Gaddy's last five opponents have connected at a 51% rate.
17:01He eats half the punches that come his way.
17:03You know, you ask yourself, can Robinson go like this for the entire 10 rounds?
17:14Well, he went sort of like this for 12 rounds against Philip Holliday.
17:18So if he's in great shape, then that's not going to be a problem for him, the pace of this fight.
17:22I tell you what, this is a fight that fans can watch every day.
17:33You got a classic boxer and a classic puncher here, and this always makes for a terrific fight.
17:37A classic boxer who's willing tonight to exchange, and you heard Ivan Robinson's corner asking him to exchange a little less.
17:47But so far, he continues to show a willingness to stand in there with Arturo and trade punches.
17:53Maybe because he's landing so much, it's hard to step away from it.
17:57Yeah, it is, but I think Arturo is actually hurting his body some.
18:00I think Arturo hurt him bad with a left body shot just a few seconds ago.
18:04Okay, let's keep it in. Come on.
18:05Warning for low blow there from Earl Morton.
18:09Got him taking the warning.
18:10Never took his eyes off of Robinson as he listened to Earl Morton.
18:16Come on, we're working. Pulls him out.
18:18Well, Robinson went to the same high school as Meldrick Taylor.
18:21Like Taylor, he has really good boxing skills.
18:26But like Taylor, he wants to get in there and trade, and sometimes that backfires.
18:32The high school was Simon Gratz in Pennsylvania, or Philadelphia, I should say.
18:37They trade, and they trade, and they trade again.
18:40But Robinson seems to be getting the best of it right now.
18:43He is getting the best of it right now.
18:46Eight minutes of sustained brilliance by both fighters.
18:49Assault after assault after assault.
18:53Here comes Gotti.
18:58Now, blood coming from the eye of Gotti.
19:01That was inevitable.
19:03That took so long.
19:12Hard left hook by Gotti.
19:14Backs Robinson up.
19:16He's going for football.
19:16I got put, Jill.
19:17But Robinson is taking everything from him.
19:20Yeah, he is.
19:21And he's having a good up couple on the inside.
19:23Robinson is.
19:25Robinson just targeting Gotti.
19:28Firing combinations and landing punch after punch.
19:32Gotti says, give me more.
19:33I love this kind of fight.
19:35It's who he is and what he does.
19:42It's who he is and what he does.
19:42It's who he is and what he does.
19:46What's wrong?
19:52You got to hit my head.
19:53You got to hit my head.
19:53That's all.
19:53All right.
19:53You all right.
19:54Yes, brother.
19:55All right.
19:57You got to get around this guy.
19:59We don't want you trading with him.
20:00Get around.
20:01Right hand uppercut.
20:03Right hand uppercut.
20:04And turn, turn, turn.
20:06Slow the pace up a little bit.
20:08That means put pressure on him, but make him miss.
20:10You ain't got to kill him with every shot, okay?
20:12You hear what I'm saying?
20:13Yeah.
20:13You hear what I'm saying?
20:14Don't try to kill this guy.
20:16Just make it easy.
20:17Make this round easy, okay?
20:18Keep touching to the body.
20:21You don't have to kill him with him, all right?
20:23But you walk in behind the jab.
20:24Don't let him hit you with the right hand.
20:27Come on, baby.
20:28Come on, baby.
20:29Hey.
20:29Come on.
20:29I'm going to have your help.
20:31Hey.
20:32You're standing too straight with me.
20:34Robinson has always had good skills.
20:36Here you see him using it to elude Gaddy.
20:39Hit him with combinations.
20:42Two-punch combination followed by a three-punch combination.
20:46Good work from Ivan Robinson.
20:48Harold, how'd you score the first three rounds?
20:56Jim, I've got it 30 to 27, three rounds to nothing.
21:00Ivan Robinson, I think he's bugging him in this war.
21:02I'll be honest with you.
21:04And I'll tell you something else.
21:05I don't think Arturo Gaddy really sees that right hand coming
21:07because that left guy is really swelling badly.
21:10And if you watch Robinson, every time he throws a right hand,
21:12he connects.
21:13So, so far, I'm clean punching alone.
21:15I've got Ivan Robinson winning every round.
21:18I have the same score.
21:19Fairly obvious.
21:24Yeah.
21:28I mean, the drama would appear to be established already.
21:31Can Gaddy land enough thunder to score a knockout?
21:35Will Robinson stick to his game plan enough to last in the fight
21:38and score a decision victory?
21:40Uh, Robinson obviously sees this as a crossroads fight.
21:44He told us this is his Olympics.
21:47This is his championship fight.
21:49If he was going to be a professional fighter who could make money,
21:52he had to make his stand here, and he is making it.
21:55I'll tell you what.
21:56Arturo Gaddy's going to have to start blocking some of these punches
21:59or slip them because he won't be able to take this peckly like this all night.
22:02Ivan Robinson feels as though he hasn't gotten as much attention
22:07as he deserved in his career.
22:09So, he relished this opportunity to step back into the spotlight
22:13and look ahead to bigger things.
22:15What a statement it would be on how every fight could be different
22:37if Robinson were unable to beat the light-hitting Philip Holliday
22:41but able to beat the thunderous punching of Arturo Gaddy.
22:45Well, styles make fights.
22:47Philip Holliday is a good fighter that throws multiple punches
22:50just like Ivan Robinson.
22:51He's more experienced in fighting that type of fight than Robinson,
22:54but they're fighting the same fight.
22:56In this matchup, you have a classic boxer against a classic puncher.
23:00There's the classic puncher doing his work.
23:03Right hand over the top by Gaddy.
23:07I thought Robinson was a little bit out of balance.
23:11As he turned sideways, he got caught.
23:16But it is a clear knockdown,
23:18and it puts Gaddy back in the fight in terms of the scoring.
23:21Yeah, two-point round would be huge for Gaddy at this point.
23:23Yeah, he needed something real bad, and he made it happen.
23:29And that brings the chance of Gaddy, Gaddy, Gaddy back from the crowd.
23:33And Arturo tries to respond as round four of a great battle comes to a close.
23:40And the two good friends smiling and laughing with one another
23:51after four rounds of spirited warfare.
23:53Oh, that's great to see.
23:57Lovely.
23:58Well, they winked at each other just before the fight started.
24:03Everything's okay.
24:03Hold this.
24:04Put it in there. Put it in there.
24:06Now, listen to me, God damn it.
24:07Listen to me.
24:08You see how good you did when you took your time?
24:10Then, at the end, you tried to kill him, didn't you?
24:13Why do you do that?
24:13Take your time, okay?
24:14It's going to come, okay?
24:16You listen to me.
24:16You hear what I'm saying?
24:17Open up.
24:18Go down the middle.
24:19Baby!
24:20One, two.
24:21Swallowed up.
24:22One, the fight with a jab and a right hand.
24:25Take a look at the knockdown.
24:27There you can see it hit Robinson.
24:30The punch landed Robinson high on the head
24:32and sort of almost muscled him over
24:35rather than knocked him over.
24:37Maybe that extra eight pounds, huh?
24:39That could be.
24:41And there's always something about those punches
24:43right up on the top of the head
24:45or very high on the head.
24:46Well, they can make you lose your balance.
24:48Exactly right, Jeff.
24:52In round four, Gotti landed 29 of 82 punches.
24:55Robinson, 31 of 68.
24:57So that was the first frame
24:58in which Gotti actually threw more punches than Ivan.
25:06And you heard Bob Waring telling Gotti,
25:08stick to your boxing.
25:09Don't try to knock him out with one punt.
25:11It's going to come if you're patient.
25:13Robinson landing the uppercut.
25:15Good uppercut by Ivan Ralf.
25:16That's the point that Corley told him
25:18to go too early in the fight.
25:20You know, they made this a 10-round fight
25:23because Gotti felt that if the fight
25:27with Manfredi had been 10,
25:29they would have let him finish it.
25:31But he may have needed 12 against Robinson.
25:35Gotti with the left hook combination,
25:38body and head.
25:39Robinson comes back with a flurry of right hands.
25:42Both men scoring in the first minute of the fifth.
25:47Now, Arturo is taking some of those punches.
25:49You saw the cut under Gotti's left eye.
26:07So since it is under the eye instead of over it,
26:10the blood won't be seeping into his eye.
26:12Maybe he preserves a little more visibility that way,
26:14although, as Harold Letterman pointed out,
26:17the eye is badly swollen as well.
26:19Good right hand by Gotti.
26:20I tell you what, Gotti is doing exactly
26:22what Raring told him to do.
26:23He's punching, doing slight punches,
26:25trying to win the fight for us.
26:26He's not trying to kill with every punch.
26:28And he's landing a lot more punches that way.
26:33Great right hand by Robinson.
26:37Beautiful one-two by Robinson.
26:38This is a ten-round fight,
26:58not a twelve-round fight.
27:01No official title at stake.
27:04So as we reach the end of round five,
27:06we are coming to the halfway point in the bouton.
27:11And that makes the knockdown for Gotti
27:13in the last round even more important.
27:17As Larry pointed out,
27:18he's got him back into the fight on the scorecards,
27:20or should have anyway.
27:26Oh, good right hand by Gotti,
27:28good left hand by Robinson.
27:31Both men still landing with great frequency.
27:34Oh, good right hand by Robinson.
27:36Ivan Robinson having a big night
27:38as he tries to set up the upset victory
27:42over Arturo Gotti,
27:43which would energize his career.
27:46Hold it there.
27:54Hold it there.
27:55Hold it.
27:55I got this there.
27:56Hold it.
27:57I got this there.
27:57Hold it.
27:59Close your eyes.
27:59Okay.
28:01Okay.
28:02Oh, don't blow it out.
28:03Don't breathe.
28:04Nice and easy.
28:05Nice and easy.
28:05Don't worry about it.
28:06Put your hands away now.
28:07Okay.
28:08Look.
28:08Make your turn, okay?
28:09Come on!
28:10All right.
28:11Nice and easy, baby.
28:12Look.
28:13Hey.
28:14Take none all.
28:15Make the turn.
28:16You got the turn.
28:16You got the turn, Ivan.
28:18The turn.
28:18Ivan, you make the fight easy
28:20when you give them angles.
28:21You give them angles,
28:22hit them with combinations,
28:23and go.
28:24Okay.
28:24That's it.
28:25All right.
28:25Make it easy.
28:26Deep breath, man.
28:26Deep breath.
28:28Don't show up for the people, Ivan.
28:29They can't help you
28:30if you're getting in trouble.
28:30Right.
28:31You got to keep your mind on it.
28:32Take your time, okay?
28:33Take your time.
28:34Get in your room.
28:34Get under her stuff, okay?
28:37Hold on.
28:37Hold on.
28:38Hold on.
28:38Don't walk me down.
28:39Give me some out, please.
28:43Every gouty fight
28:44seems to be held
28:45in E.R.,
28:46the emergency room.
28:54And now a delay
28:55as the ring rope
28:56is repaired.
28:58Just to the right
28:59of Ivan Robinson
29:00at the edge of the screen,
29:01there was a repair
29:02on the ring rope.
29:03That's done now.
29:05Gotti starts out
29:05popping two little jabs.
29:07In round five,
29:08Gotti threw 106 punches.
29:11Robinson threw 96.
29:14Between them,
29:15they landed 77.
29:17So it continues
29:18as a war
29:19as we move into
29:21the sixth of a Schedule 10.
29:28Robinson came into
29:29this fight as a
29:30four or five-to-one
29:32underdog.
29:34He is not an underdog
29:36anymore.
29:39And those odds
29:40were a little lopsided
29:41to begin with
29:41just because of
29:42the manifest skills
29:43that Robinson
29:44has demonstrated
29:45throughout his career
29:46as both an amateur
29:47and a pro.
29:48He knows how to fight.
29:49That's right.
29:50Well, and he's taking
29:51a great punch here.
29:52Taking a beautiful punch
29:53here, Larry.
29:54That comes from
29:56conditioning determination.
30:01Taking a punch
30:02from a guy
30:02who outweighs him
30:03eight or nine pounds
30:04in the ring tonight.
30:09But in addition
30:10to constantly living
30:12in desperation
30:12in the ring,
30:14Gotti is constantly
30:15fighting the battle
30:16of making weight
30:17at 135 or even
30:19more desperately
30:19prior to this
30:20at 130.
30:21And that takes
30:22a lot out of him, too.
30:26He walks around
30:27at over 160.
30:31Must be hanging out
30:32with Vince Phillips.
30:33Well, his left hook
30:41is just as stout
30:42as Vince Phillips'
30:42straight right hand.
30:43Yes, it is.
30:51See, when he moves
30:52his head left and right,
30:53then Ivan couldn't pinpoint
30:55him to land a big shot
30:56on him.
30:56That's what he needs
30:56to be more of,
30:57move his head.
30:57Robinson stunning
31:05Gotti inside.
31:06The straight right hand
31:07stopped Gotti in his tracks.
31:08Arturo not throwing.
31:10Robinson with a chance
31:11for a knockout.
31:12Gotti holds on.
31:13He was definitely wobbled
31:15and ready to be taken,
31:17but Robinson momentarily
31:18got tied
31:20and had to back off.
31:22Now, when Gotti
31:23got into this kind
31:24of trouble
31:24against Gabriel Willis,
31:26Willis left openings
31:27and Gotti landed
31:28the left hook
31:29that won him the fight.
31:31Robinson has to be careful
31:32as he continues
31:33to land sight.
31:34And there it was.
31:35Oh, he got caught
31:36with a big punch.
31:41Look, can you believe
31:42this guy?
31:43Can you believe Gotti?
31:44This is unbelievable.
31:45This is him.
31:47He can't walk
31:47into nothing big
31:48either, don't you?
31:55So both men
31:56come close
31:57to scoring knockouts
31:58in round number six.
32:01And Gotti finishes stronger.
32:03And Gotti finishes stronger.
32:07Breathe in.
32:08Breathe in.
32:08Don't worry about knocking him out.
32:19Keep constantly moving.
32:20Keep constantly moving.
32:21You stand there
32:21to try to knock the guy out.
32:22You can't do this.
32:23When he throws combinations,
32:38I want you to fall.
32:39Hey, don't stand up there straight.
32:42All right, let it go.
32:44Let it go.
32:47Here we see Robinson landing
32:49this real devastating flurry.
32:53And at the end of the round,
32:54when Robinson thought he had him
32:56finished, that right hand
32:57turned the tie.
33:00Gotti comes out
33:01and attacks with the left hook.
33:04The left eye really bothering
33:06Arturo between rounds.
33:09Well, that great script writer
33:12in the sky
33:13has written another Gotti script.
33:15Yes, he has.
33:17Harold, how do you have it
33:18through six?
33:19This is absolutely unbelievable.
33:2157, 56,
33:23four rounds to two.
33:25Ivan Robinson.
33:26I got Ivan Robinson
33:27by one point.
33:28The fifth round
33:28was the critical round
33:29of the fight, Jim.
33:30Could have gone either way.
33:31I really fought Robinson out,
33:33fought him in the fifth round.
33:34So that's where I got Robinson
33:35by a point.
33:36But let me tell you,
33:37this is sensational.
33:38But you gave the sixth round
33:39to Gotti.
33:40Oh, without question.
33:41He almost had him out
33:41at the end of the sixth round.
33:42Yeah, but Robinson almost
33:44had him out in the middle
33:44of the sixth round.
33:45But Jim, I thought
33:46Gotti's punches were much
33:48more devastating at the end.
33:49You had to give it to Gotti.
33:50All right.
33:51I had the score
33:52the exact same way.
33:53You recall I said
33:54at the end of the round, Jim,
33:56he's finished the stronger fighter.
34:01The eye of Gotti
34:02is really close and bad.
34:03He needs to make something
34:04happen pretty quickly
34:05here if he can.
34:07Well, he's not really dangerous
34:08until it's totally closed.
34:11Well, you remember,
34:12he's not following
34:13his own advice, Robinson.
34:14Remember, he said that
34:15when you hurt Gotti,
34:16that's when you got
34:17to get out of there.
34:17Yeah, but I was...
34:18He hurt Gotti
34:18and went after him
34:19and caught a punch
34:20that turned the tie.
34:22And his corner told him,
34:23don't fight for the crowd.
34:24Fight a small fight.
34:25Stay away from the guy
34:26when you hurt him.
34:26Yeah, the guys in his corner
34:27saw the winless fight.
34:29They know what happens
34:30when you chase Arturo Gotti.
34:31There's one thing
34:32George Foreman always says,
34:34don't chase a big puncher.
34:41Right hand over the top
34:43by Robinson.
34:44Left hook lands for Robinson.
34:48Gotti not able to find
34:49the target as much
34:50in round number seven.
34:52Robinson seems weird too,
34:54though.
34:54Both fighters very tired.
34:56Good left hook to the body
34:58by Arturo.
34:59Every round Robinson wins now
35:01a possible step
35:02toward the upset victory.
35:05Stop, step out, step out.
35:11Calm down, calm down, all right?
35:13Come on.
35:14I'm in, let's go.
35:15I'm in, let's go.
35:33They're throwing some big punches
35:34at running over now, Jim.
35:36Both guys looking for a knockout.
35:37All right, just walk out clean.
35:38Come on.
35:39He's got a lot flowing from the cut under Ghani's eye as Robinson lands combination after combination on the bell fellas. Robinson got a smarter round in that round. Good round. Took the crowd out of the fight too. Took the crowd back out of the fight.
36:09Relax. Breathe in. Breathe in. Let me deep breath in. Nice. That's nice. Arturo, buddy. You've got to go in behind the jab. You can't go in empty. You hear what I'm saying? Behind that shoulder and behind the jab. I know you're tired, but you've got to be behind that shoulder. Don't give him nothing. When he starts firing, I want you to tick tock. You okay? Come on now.
36:34Hold a couple of rounds, baby. A couple of rounds. It's anybody's fight now. Anybody's fight.
36:37Put it on the cuff.
36:39Hold all I got.
36:41Lock my neck. Okay.
36:43Hold it. Hold it.
36:45Well, they told us before the fight it would be Bob Waring and not Lou Duva, who would be doing most of the talking in Ghani's corner, and that has been true throughout the fight.
36:55Right now, Ghani needs the U.S. cavalry because he's probably a couple of points behind.
37:02And you heard Bob Waring saying that he wanted Ghani to go in behind the jab. Arturo has landed only 41 out of 247, one-sixth, 17% of his jabs in the fight.
37:15So he may be thinking, why should I be going in behind my jab? I'm not even landing in the thing.
37:21He said to go in behind the jab for defensive purposes. Maybe that jab will deflect the right hand so he's coming in.
37:28He wants to land left hooks.
37:32Ivan Robinson with a brilliant performance through the first seven rounds.
37:40Seeming to pile up a lead on the scorecards as he goes into the last three, an underdog against the living lightweight legend Arturo Gatti.
37:49That legend may be taking a step toward extinction tonight.
37:56All right, walk it out. Walk it out. Let's go. Let's walk it out.
38:02All right, stop punching. Let your heads, bro. Let's go.
38:08All right, stop punching. Let your heads, bro. Let's go.
38:12Both fights seem to be catching a little bit of a second wind now.
38:22Yep. Okay. Let's go.
38:26They both look tired at the end of seven. Ghani trying to go back to boxing.
38:31Robinson definitely moving faster on his feet now than he did in the rounds preceding this one.
38:37I think he's trying to start boxing instead of like he should have been doing the whole time now.
38:41Well, you don't want to get ahead of yourself, but if you're Ivan Robinson, in the back of your mind, you've got to be thinking seven more minutes and I've won this fight.
38:53Now you keep taking punches like that though, Jim.
38:56Yeah, well, Ghani has landed some hard punches and Robinson has taken him very well.
39:00He may be the biggest guy we've seen Ghani fight and he seems to be handling the power reasonably well.
39:07More and more Robinson making Ghani chase, but Ghani continuing to land when he's able to get in close.
39:25Right.
39:27Let's go.
39:28He's Pompey.
39:29Don't want him to walk out.
39:30Walk him out.
39:31Keep up right ahead by Robinson.
39:32Keep up right ahead by Robinson.
39:33You can't put it in close.
39:34Keep up, okay, walk it out.
39:35Keep up right ahead by Robinson.
39:38Hey, OK.
39:39Look at that.
39:40Good right ahead by Robinson.
39:42Hey, look at that.
39:43Big right hand and a big left hook by Gotti, trying to score that one dramatic punch that'll turn the fight around for it. Six minutes to go.
40:13You did great. That was a good round for you. You can do that all day, okay? You let him get hit with nothing, okay?
40:19Because you've got good defense. Where to fall? Beautiful, beautiful.
40:25That was a good jab, okay? Now take your time. We've got two more rounds, okay?
40:31Two more rounds. Okay. You okay?
40:35You okay? Touch him in the soft spot. Put it down there in the soft spot. Come on.
40:41It's a fucking fight too close and you let it go. Okay.
40:45This bump can't beat you. You get busy and get the movement and get your angles and shit. You understand?
40:54Gotti liked that round. Every time he's landed some good punches, however, you see Robinson coming back.
41:04Robinson landing at 49% through the course of the fight.
41:08Gotti landing at 32%. Arturo's punches packing a little more power, perhaps, but Robinson has the advantage of directing the judge's attention to Gotti's badly damaged left eye throughout the fight because he got it to swell and to bleed after only one round.
41:26One, two, three, two, one, two, one, three, four, five, four, five, five, five, five, five, five, six, five, six, seven, seven, eight, nine, eight, nine.
41:35One, two, three, one, eight, nine, eight, nine, eight, nine, nine, nine, nine, ten, eight, nine, nine, ten, nine, ten.
41:37Bob Waring urging Gotti to Fox and Arturo has managed to stay behind the jab and keep his shoulders perpendicular rather than square to the opponent for the last couple of rounds.
41:48but it's late in a fight
41:50in which he is likely trailing on the scorecards.
41:59Come on, no time.
42:00All right, stop punching. Stop punching. Let him out.
42:02Come on, guys. Walk it out. Walk it out.
42:15You know, Bob Earl seemed to be doing a pretty good job
42:17with Arturo. This is his first time ever working
42:19out in front of a fighter,
42:20and it doesn't seem like it's too bad.
42:22I think a few more fights,
42:23and he'll be a good trainer for Arturo better.
42:25But he actually is good now.
42:29But as you pointed out at the top,
42:31nobody's gonna change Arturo much.
42:33Not much at all.
42:34You're just talking about refining
42:36what is already a well-defined style.
42:38And fine-tuning. That's right.
42:40Exactly what you already have.
42:42You know, while the odds may have been 4-1,
42:44as Larry pointed out,
42:46he's in against a really good fighter in Ivan Robinson.
42:49Oh, that hurt Arturo Gatti.
42:59Huge ninth round for Ivan Robinson,
43:02trying to finish Arturo Gatti off.
43:04Gatti wobbling.
43:07Seemingly almost out on his feet.
43:09Watch him erupt with a big left hook here any minute.
43:12He needs to put his hands on.
43:14He's taking too many punches here, Joe.
43:20And there's the attempt interruption.
43:22Bud Robinson ducking the punches.
43:24Ivan Robinson fully in command now,
43:27as they come down the stretch of the ninth.
43:39Thunderous left hook landed for Gatti,
43:42but Robinson's okay.
43:44You ask me what Gatti's future holds.
43:48Because of his exciting style, Jim.
43:51There will always be quick fighters willing to fight him.
43:54Maybe a rematch is in his future.
43:57One more round. One more. One more round.
44:12Hey, come here. All right.
44:14That's our luck. Last round, baby.
44:15Last round, baby.
44:16I can't let him take this fight away from him.
44:18I can't let him take this fight away from him.
44:21You're okay, baby. You're okay.
44:22You don't got here now, don't you?
44:24With a double uppercut shot, baby.
44:26You understand?
44:28Don't be trying to knock that guy out.
44:30Don't worry about trying to knock him out.
44:32Win the fight. Win the fight.
44:34You need this round.
44:35How many times I told you this?
44:37Two minutes.
44:38All right, then.
44:39You don't have time to take this guy.
44:40Give this guy nothing, okay?
44:41Take this guy and you've got to get him out.
44:42Get him down.
44:43When I yield Gotti.
44:46Yeah, really.
44:47Early in the round,
44:48Gotti getting wobbled
44:50by some of Robinson's
44:53stiff, straight punches.
44:56Right there.
45:00And Gotti landed only two out of 34 jabs in the ninth round.
45:04He will go with Power Punches in the tenth
45:07to try to pull it out
45:09against good friend Ivan Robinson.
45:11Harold, how do you have it going into the 10th?
45:14Jim, six rounds to three.
45:1686, 84, mighty Ivan Robinson.
45:20Jim, I got to tell you, I haven't seen a performance like this
45:23from a Philadelphia fighter since Benny Briscoe retired.
45:26I just love it.
45:27Ivan Robinson fighting his heart out.
45:29I mean, he don't have the power, but certainly he's got the heart,
45:32great ability, moving.
45:34Just keeps whacking Arturo Gatti with left chairs and right hands.
45:37I think Ivan Robinson has done this fight so far.
45:40Yeah.
45:43Robinson's performance here tonight,
45:45reminiscent of Meldrick Taylor's first nine rounds
45:48against Julio Cesar Chavez.
45:50Now, can Gatti pull out a last-round miracle the way Chavez did?
45:59Chavez looked a little better.
46:02If you were to judge the fight by a side-by-side picture
46:05of the two faces, it's no contest.
46:08Robinson looks fresh and relatively unmarked.
46:11Gotti looks like Gotti.
46:13Good left hook by Arturo.
46:16The open court really hurt Arturo's left eye there.
46:25By the scoring of both Harold and I,
46:27Gotti needs a knockdown in this round to avoid a defeat.
46:32Yeah, to pull out a draw, right?
46:34Yeah, yeah.
46:35Walk him out.
46:36Walk him out, Robinson.
46:37Walk him out.
46:38Walk him out.
46:39Walk him out.
46:40Walk him out.
46:41All right, great.
46:42Stand back.
46:43Sit back.
46:44All right, stop punching.
46:45Let him out.
46:46Let him out.
46:47Come on.
46:48Let him out.
46:49Let him out.
46:50Let him out.
46:51Let him out.
46:52Come on.
46:53How big a factor do you think Gotti's damage left eye has been
46:57in Robinson's ability to land so many punches, Roy?
47:01How big a factor has the damage left eye been in Robinson's ability
47:05to land so many punches?
47:06I think it's been a big effect because he's glad that Arturo got
47:09up and see that right hand and Ivan landed at the right hand all
47:12night long.
47:13Oh, that was the right hand that knocked Ivan cold.
47:15Ivan is almost out of his feet.
47:17Gotti again.
47:1844 seconds to go.
47:21This would be the miracle of all miracles if he's able to pull
47:25it off.
47:26Robinson trying to hold.
47:28Gotti looking for one big clincher.
47:31Now Robinson seems to be collecting himself.
47:38Oh, what a right hand that was.
47:41I think Gotti spent himself.
47:44I don't think there's too much left to pull this off.
47:55He's still trying to go there.
47:57He's still trying hard there.
47:59Oh.
48:00Oh, what drama.
48:01What a fight.
48:06Oh, what drama.
48:09What an unbelievable fight.
48:19Ladies and gentlemen, we may well have seen a fight of the year.
48:26Let's hear it for mighty Ivan Robinson and a brutal,
48:35Dr. Gotti.
48:36Look at this.
48:49This is the punch that almost starts diving Robinson.
48:52That almost knocked him cold in his tracks, Jim.
48:55Look at him.
48:56He was almost out.
48:58Shades of the Ruelas fight.
49:00But Robinson survived that one and stood through the full ten rounds.
49:12In the kind of fight we've come to recognize over the past two and a half years, you see most frequently on boxing after dark.
49:22Thank goodness I fight on regular HBO.
49:24No, you wouldn't want to be in one of these, Roy.
49:27I'm not going to be in one of these if I can hit it.
49:32Harold Edelman, how'd your card wind up?
49:34Jim, you know, this is very interesting.
49:35I got it.
49:3695, 94, six rounds to four, Ivan Robinson.
49:40But, Jim, let me tell you, there's a real good argument for a 10-8 round in that tenth round.
49:45And that would even it up and cause a draw.
49:47Because, you know, when a guy gets staggered like that, even without a knockdown, certainly the judges would be correct in calling it 10-8.
49:54I almost called it 10-8.
49:56But to be perfectly frank, I thought Robinson held on and fought back enough late in the round so that Gatti only wins the tenth round 10-9.
50:04So I got Robinson by a point.
50:06Well, too late for the chant of Gatti, Gatti, Gatti to influence the judges.
50:10But the crowd gets in one last element of support for their man as Mark Barrow prepares to read the scores.
50:19Ladies and gentlemen, we have a split decision.
50:34Judge Ed Leahy scores it 96-93, Gatti.
50:45Judge Melvina Lathan scores it 98-93, Robinson.
50:56And Judge Steve Weisfeld scores it 96-94 to the winner by split decision, mighty Ivan Robinson.
51:13Well, there are a lot of members of the crowd who don't like it, Roy Jones, because the love affair with Gatti is well established.
51:31But I think you got the right decision there.
51:33Well, I think it's the right decision.
51:35But you hate to see a loser in a fight like that, Jim.
51:38That was one of the best fights that I think I've ever witnessed.
51:42A tremendous battle by Robinson and Gatti.
51:45And we take a look at final punch stat numbers.
51:48Here's part of the reason why, at least to our lights, it appeared to be the right decision for Robinson.
51:54He outlands Gatti by 126 punches.
51:57Gatti wound up throwing 40 more because Gatti was unloading the kitchen down the stretch, throwing as many punches as he could possibly find in his body.
52:07Let's hear from Larry Merchant in the ring.
52:10And Jim, thank you guys for this fight.
52:14Ivan, the first thing you said to Gatti after the fight was...
52:18No rematch.
52:19No rematch.
52:20No rematch.
52:21Why is that?
52:22No, no, no.
52:23We're just kidding.
52:24We'll do it again with Gatti if he want to do it again.
52:26He's a true champion.
52:27I want to thank Main Event.
52:28I want to thank Team Robinson for putting up with me for eight weeks.
52:31And Gatti, you's a hell of a champion, baby.
52:33Do you want a rematch?
52:35Of course.
52:36You know, whenever I fight, I want a rematch.
52:38It was a tough fight.
52:39And Ivan Robinson showed a lot, you know, about good boxing skill.
52:42Yeah, definitely rematch.
52:43Why not?
52:44Ivan, you came out uncharacteristically, jumped on him right away, almost as if you were going after his eye.
52:53What was the point?
52:55Like I told you earlier, Larry, yesterday, Gatti's a true champion.
52:59People intend to say that he cuts.
53:01I didn't want him to cut.
53:02I wanted him to fight me just like he fought me tonight.
53:04Make it a good fight.
53:05Let the audience and the people know that I'm a true lightweight.
53:09But why did you jump him at the opening bell?
53:12Because I know Gatti's a slow starter.
53:14I knew he comes on later in the late round.
53:16And, you know, I know I'm not a big knockout puncher, so I had to build up the points.
53:20Were you really shocked the way he came at you at the beginning, thinking that he was going to box you?
53:25Not really, no.
53:26He just tried to, you know, to intimidate me.
53:29But I knew he would go in the boxing style.
53:31And, you know, I tried my best to come on, but I came on too late in the fight.
53:35And he's a good survivor.
53:36And I hurt him a couple of times.
53:38How badly were you hurt in the last minute of the round?
53:41You know, I tell everybody back at home, and I also tell the fans, you know, I'm a warrior.
53:45I don't take nothing away from no fighter.
53:47God, he hurt me plenty of times in the fight.
53:49But like he said, I survived.
53:50But what about in those last 45 seconds when he hit you that punch high in the head and you reeled into the ropes?
53:56I was hurt.
53:57But I knew he was going to come on.
53:59But I got a great enough defense to weather the storm.
54:01And I came back.
54:02Did you think you had him?
54:04Did you think that last round was going to pull the fight out for you?
54:07I thought so.
54:08I won the last round hard, and I thought that pulled the fight off.
54:11But I didn't.
54:12But like I said, he did a good fight, and he survived those big shots.
54:15All right.
54:16You winked at him when the fight started.
54:18You guys seemed to go to war after loving each other.
54:22How was that?
54:23Well, you know, Gotti, like I said before, I trained with him on many occasions.
54:27He's a true warrior, and he's a fun guy to be with outside the ring.
54:30So, you know, I respect him a lot.
54:31I appreciate it.
54:33It's part of the sport.
54:34You know, we're fighters, and it's just part of boxing.
54:38Thank you very much.
54:39Once again, both of you.
54:40Look at that.
54:41Look at that.
54:42Ain't that nice?
54:43Hey, Ivan.
54:44All right.
54:45Thank you very much.
54:46Back to you, Jim.
54:47All right.
54:48And very quickly, Larry, we've covered Arturo Gotti with glory over the years because of
54:51his style and all the entertainment he's brought to us once again tonight.
54:54He was terrific.
54:55But a moment of tribute for Ivan Robinson, who was one of our best amateur boxers for years,
55:00never quite got to the golden ring, has had his frustrations as a professional.
55:04This was his night.
55:05Yeah, I think this was his night.
55:06I think he got his just dues.
55:08I think he's happy with that.
55:09I like to wish Smoke a happy birthday because it's Smoke's night, too.
55:12Well, hello, Smoke.
55:13Happy birthday.
55:14But I think Ivan did a terrific job.
55:15I think that may be the beginning of a new career for him.
55:18Well, we'll be seeing Ivan Robinson in the future as he now brings new star power to the 135-pound weight class
55:25with his victory over Arturo Gotti.
55:27And remember, Angel Manfredi, who defeated Gotti back in January, still waits in the wings for another big fight.
55:33Maybe he has a rematch with Gotti.
55:35Maybe Robinson gives Gotti a rematch.
55:37You'll be seeing Arturo somewhere again along the way.
55:40We'll have a final word on boxing in just a moment.

57:31But with his trunks shaded by blood, he came back to get a technical knockout victory over Darren Mashinsky
57:38at the end of the sixth round on the stoppage by referee Jimmy Condor.
57:42Then Ivan Robinson jumped out in the first round and showed aggression against Arturo Gotti.
57:47Hurt Gotti's left eye and used that as a tactical advantage throughout what became a ten-round split decision victory over Gotti.
57:56Gotti's second consecutive loss does nothing to dim his relationship with the fans.
