00:49Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:50I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Lesus Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:53We'll begin with the news.
01:00At this hour, the general debate of the 80th United Nations General Assembly continues on
01:18its fifth day, going over key issues such as the Israeli genocide in Gaza, climate action,
01:24and more.
01:25Let's go live with our correspondent Jorge Gestoso for the latest.
01:28Welcome Jorge.
01:33Hello?
01:34Hello?
01:35Hello?
01:36Hello?
01:40In a 15-minute speech, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez was launching a very strong message
01:48against Israel and what he called the genocide of Palestine.
01:54He definitely also was denouncing the complicity of the U.S. in that genocide, said that it was
02:03unacceptable that at this age, in this global community, that genocide is taking place.
02:11He said at this very moment that we are talking, children, he said 2.2 million people, including
02:18children and women, are being starved to death in Palestine.
02:22That was almost the opening of his 15-minute speech.
02:27Also he was criticizing militarism, mentioned then that it is also unacceptable, the deployment
02:35of U.S. naval fleet in the Caribbean, a threat to Venezuela and to the whole region, expressed
02:46the total remarks that Cuba has with Venezuela, the total support of what Venezuela is resisting,
02:57and also mentioned inequality, also mentioned climate change, also mentioned the request,
03:03the demand of a new world order.
03:06It was applauded at the end of his speech by many, many countries, including a lot of Latin
03:13American countries.
03:16Before Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez was speaking in the morning also, the Foreign Minister
03:23of Russia were talking about Mr. Sergey Lavrov, also condemning Gaza genocide, and also giving
03:32full support to Venezuela and Cuba, saying that it is unacceptable that they are trying to
03:41use the force and the language of diplomacy.
03:47Most, most critical are the United States that he believes that he is not very much interested
03:53in dialogue but the use of military force.
03:57And also in the morning was also the representative of St. Keith and Neves, also supporting another
04:07country in the Caribbean, also supporting Venezuela and Cuba fight against the 60 years embargo.
04:16So in the morning very much present our Latin America in the speeches of these three key speeches.
04:25Go back to Una.
04:28Thank you Jorge for the latest information on what is happening this fifth day of the UN General
04:33Assembly.
04:34In this context, let's go over some of the main remarks during today's debate.
04:37The Foreign Minister of Cuba, Bruno Rodriguez, denounced during his speech Israel's genocide
04:42against Palestine and reiterated Cuba's solidarity with the Palestinian people and their just
04:47cause for freedom and independence.
04:49On behalf of the government and people of Cuba, I reiterate our firmest solidarity with the
04:56Palestinian people and with their just cause for freedom, independence and an end to the
05:02Zionist occupation.
05:04The Cuban top diplomat also reaffirmed his rejection of threats of aggression against Venezuela and
05:13his support for the Bolivarian government and President Nicolás Maduro.
05:17We reaffirm our energetic rejection of threats of aggression against Venezuela and our full support
05:29for the Bolivarian and Chavista government of this sister Latin American and Caribbean nation,
05:38for the people's military union led by the legitimate President Nicolás Maduro Moros.
05:47The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, reaffirmed the nation's
05:52call to stop the blockade against Cuba and expressed his support for Venezuela in the face of the US military
05:57presence in the Caribbean Sea.
05:59Russia, together with an absolute majority of UN members, calls for the immediate lifting without
06:04of the prior conditions of the trade blockade against Cuba, which has been in place for more
06:09than 60 years, and for it to be removed from the notorious list of state sponsors of terrorism.
06:15We express our solidarity with the people of Venezuela and threats.
06:21We advocate for Latin America and the Caribbean to remain a zone of peace and cooperation.
06:28Moreover, Lavrov joined the international condemnation of the massacre carried out by the Israeli army
06:36in Gaza and drew attention to attempts to hinder the recognition of the Palestinian state.
06:41There is no justification for the brutal killings of the civilian population of Palestine or for terrorist attacks.
06:48There is also no justification for the collective punishment of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,
06:53where Palestinian children are dying from bombing and starvation, hospitals and schools are being destroyed,
06:59and hundreds of thousands of people are being left without shelter.
07:02There is no justification for plans to annex the West Bank.
07:07We are essentially dealing with an attempt at a kind of coup d'etat aimed at burying UN decisions on the creation of a Palestinian state.
07:18Recently, a number of Western governments announced their recognition of the state of Palestine.
07:25Moreover, they announced their intention to do so several months ago.
07:30The question then arises, why did they wait so long?
07:34It seems that they had hoped that soon, by the time the General Assembly session was convened,
07:41there would be nothing and no one left to recognize.
07:43The situation requires urgent action to prevent such a scenario,
07:48which was strongly advocated by the participants at the High-Level International Conference on Palestine.
07:57The Prime Minister of the Transition Government of Niger, Lamine Saint Ali Mahmoud,
08:02also recognized the Palestinian state and condemned the genocide.
08:06The people of Niger unreservedly condemn the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
08:11We unswervingly support the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.
08:21For his part, the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Rintalba, Gen. Emmanuel Udraogo,
08:25reiterated his support for the Venezuelan people and denounced the coercive measures that the United States has taken against Venezuela.
08:32There is also the specific case of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
08:36We would like to reiterate our unswerving support to the Venezuelan people,
08:39which for decades has suffered campaigns of isolation, illegal sanctions, and constant provocations.
08:46Faced with this flagrant interference in the sovereign affairs of this nation and this economic attack,
08:56which has disastrous humanitarian consequences,
08:59we would like to express our solidarity with this country, Venezuela.
09:02Also at the UN, the Prime Minister of Senkita, the Navy Terrence Drew,
09:09demanded an end to the blockade against Cuba
09:11and is removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
09:14Economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba
09:18is a relic that continues to wound an entire people and weaken regional solidarity.
09:25Year after year, this assembly has reaffirmed that the embargo is gravely unjust.
09:31St. Kitts and Nevis joins the Caribbean community in calling for its end
09:37and for Cuba's removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism,
09:42which isolates it from commerce and corporations.
09:46The Prime Minister also joined the voices condemning the genocide perpetrated by Israel
09:54against the people of Gaza and reiterated his recognition of the state of Palestine.
09:59St. Kitts and Nevis therefore calls for an end to the anguish caused by the horrific genocide
10:06that is unfolding in Gaza.
10:08We categorically condemn this affront to humanity for which there must be accountability.
10:15We urge for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire
10:19for the protection of civilians, of children, of women, of the vulnerable, of the weak.
10:25And we also call for the release of hostages
10:29and for the restoration of basic necessities and humanitarian access.
10:34International law, conscience and human decency demand no less.
10:40Further, the path to lasting peace between the state of Israel and the state, yes, the state of Palestine,
10:50one that guarantees human rights, dignity and security for all,
10:56lies in the implementation of a two-state solution.
11:01For his part, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abdelati condemned Israel's aggression against the Palestinian territories
11:10and warned that Tel Aviv is promoting a narrative that incites hatred and violence.
11:14We're seeing double standards across the board, but especially in the Middle East.
11:25The Middle East is at a point of implosion.
11:31The basis of stability, peace and security are absent.
11:36There is no noteworthy respect of international legitimacy.
11:41Our Palestinian brethren is falling victim to the most heinous Israeli actions.
11:49It's a war, a wanton, unjust war waged against defenseless civilians for a sin they did not commit,
12:01driven by an extremist ideology that only sees destruction, killing and systematic starvation.
12:10A toxic narrative, an incitement to hatred and violence.
12:19Let's now take our first break.

12:29Welcome back.
12:50On Friday, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador once again denounced the brutal
12:56operation of protests against the measures promoted by the government of Daniel Noboa.
13:01Leaders of Esperanza in Babura province reported that the president ordered the deployment of military troops
13:10who use tear gas and other means, leaving several protesters injured.
13:13In cities such as Cuenca and Otavalo, a series of excesses by the security forces have also been reported.
13:20In this scenario, complaints of arbitrary detentions and illegal transfers are increasing.
13:25Amidst this crisis, the Constitutional Court ruled national solidarity and public integrity laws,
13:31promoted by Noboa unconstitutional and human rights groups, accused the president of criminalizing protests.
13:42Also, Interior Minister John Reinberg announced that nearly 100 people were arrested
13:47due to a national strike summoned by the indigenous movement.
13:50In this regard, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities defined that the protesters
13:54accused Daniel Noboa's government of applying violence and repression against those who criticize his policy.
13:59On the contrary, the government assures that the manifestations have grown to political aims
14:04and are seeking to destabilize the administration.
14:06In spite of repression, demonstrations continued closing roads in at least four provinces,
14:11rejecting the readjustment order by the International Monetary Fund, which is grounding the people's economy down.
14:17Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Friday that the Decree on Foreign Commotion is ready to respond to any aggression
14:29and is moving forward in accordance with the constitutional process.
14:32Maduro made this statement during the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Strategic Cooperation Command of the Bolivar National Armed Forces.
14:39During the event, the President highlighted the organized structure of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces
14:44in eight integral defense zones for the protection of national sovereignty
14:48and reiterated that the instruction to protect the population and its right to peace and development of the country remains in force.
14:56The Bolivarian President also highlighted the importance of joint responsibility in the defense of the country.
15:02We say in Venezuela assimilation is underway, with 24 states preparing to face disasters and war conflicts.
15:14President Nicolas Maduro said that the day is made up of members of the Civil Protection Service, the Fire Service, the Bolivarian National Police,
15:22and the State Police, as well as school children, secondary school students, hospital staff, and health center workers.
15:29He also reaffirmed the importance of civil protection in activating the country's protection plans
15:34to safeguard the people in the event of an unexpected national emergency.
15:38The President explained that the purpose of this day is to be alert and prepared in the event of seismic activity
15:44or an imperialist threat from the United States.
15:52And the United States Department of State decided to revoke the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro
15:57citing reckless and incendiary actions related to a speech he gave to pro-Palestinian protesters outside the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
16:05For the office in charge of U.S. foreign policy, the Colombian President allegedly urged U.S. soldiers to disobey President Trump's orders and incite violence.
16:13In the context, Petro was, in fact, urging them not to take part in a war of extermination, telling them not to aim their weapons at humanity,
16:21and reminding them that they have the right to refuse.
16:24National organizations and leaders described the State Department's decision as authoritarian and repressive,
16:29expressing their support for the Colombian head of state.
16:38Upon landing in Bogota, the capital of Colombia, President Gustavo Petro responded to the U.S. State Department's decision to revoke his visa.
16:46He denounced Washington for breaking the United Nations' unity rules and said that the organization's headquarters could no longer remain in New York.
16:54The head of state responded to Marco Rubio's office and his reporters, stating that he is not interested in obtaining a visa.
17:00However, he warned that the only beneficiaries of a separation between Colombia and the United States would be the mafias.
17:06He also denounced Washington's failure to comply with international law, citing the denial of visas to Palestinian government representatives
17:13for the same reasons that those given for withdrawing his own visa, namely opposition to genocide.
17:43In Lebanon, a ceremony was held to commemorate the death of Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah former Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah,
17:53who was killed by Israeli forces in September 2024.
17:56Thousands of Nasrallah supporters attended the ceremony to renew their oath and loyalty to the Lebanese resistance.
18:03Present also were prominent religions and political figures to pay tribute to the Lebanese leader.
18:08Participants highlighted the continuity of his legacy in the face of injustice and arrogance displayed by the West in the region.
18:15And according to the China Earthquake Network Center, on Saturday, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Longshi County in Gansu province.
18:41Although damage to infrastructure in the area was reported, no reports of casualties have been received so far.
18:47In response to the disaster, rescue and firefighting teams from Gansu were deployed with approximately 280 dispatch personnel,
18:5442 firetrucks and more than 2,000 sets of equipment from Dingshi, Lansu and Tianshui.
19:00Official data shows that the area is one of the most seismically active in the country,
19:06with 30 earthquakes registered within a 200-kilometer radius over the last five years.
19:17A Guinness Supreme Court confirms that there will be a referendum after verifying the results of the consultation
19:22in which almost 90 percent of citizens voted in favor of approving a new constitution.
19:27In this context, some opposition parties called for a boycott of the process, claiming that the current president of the military junta,
19:33Colonel Mamadi Dumbuya, intends to take advantage of this change to expand his power.
19:38For this reason, they filed a motion with the court to annul the referendum, which was ultimately denied.
19:44It was precisely this court that confirmed that 89.3 percent of citizens who participated in the plebiscite
19:51support a new constitutional text, compared to 10.62 percent who voted against it.
19:56Colonel Dumbuya has not yet confirmed whether he would run for a new term in front of the board.
