00:00Stiney was 61 today, and that prompted a call from the great Bob Myers.
00:06And we're going in to a really, really interesting weekend.
00:10And so I thought this conversation ended up being pretty kind of revealing
00:15in certain ways, right?
00:17We talked earlier about Monday morning,
00:20and what do you all think is going to be going on when we come back Monday morning?
00:25Sure, there's the obvious one.
00:26Did the Niners win?
00:27Did the Niners lose?
00:28All right, we'll all reconvene and talk that out.
00:31But will the Giants be searching for a new manager,
00:33or will they have backed their current manager, Bob Melvin?
00:37And when the Warriors come back for Monday, just so you all know,
00:40that's called Media Day.
00:42That doesn't mean that it's like the media's running the ship.
00:47What that means is there is a one-stop shop availability of everything Warriors.
00:54So, for example, when you hear Jonathan Kaminga or Guy Santos or Steve Kerr say,
01:06hey, dibs, your picks stink, stuff like that tends to happen on Media Day.
01:11Bay Area, it's Steve Kerr.
01:13No.
01:13Hey, dibs, your picks stink.
01:15Yeah, right?
01:16Like that tends to happen.
01:17You walk around Media Day with a microphone, and you're like, hey, Leandro Barbosa, say this into a microphone.
01:25And they'll do it.
01:27But for the team, from their perspective, they're trying to say hello.
01:31They're like, this is what we're doing this year.
01:33Here's all the giveaways.
01:34Here's our new players.
01:36Get some pictures.
01:37Let's find out what number Al Horford is going to wear.
01:40All that kind of stuff.
01:42You don't want Media Day to happen while you are embroiled in the biggest offseason controversy the NBA has to offer.
01:51So, do the Warriors, and it was suggested by Tim Calcami on our show yesterday,
01:56do the Warriors kind of start upping the ante a little bit come Sunday afternoon?
02:01Like, JK, we've got to get this thing figured out, so our offer is on the table, but it'll lower starting tomorrow if you don't take it.
02:13And I don't know.
02:14I don't know.
02:15But there are many who think that the resolution is coming on or by Sunday.
02:21Yeah, and the resolution will not be televised.
02:23Very good.
02:24We should have some idea by the time we get to Monday because you're right.
02:29If the Warriors are doing the, hi, this is Quentin Post, and they're doing all those different things,
02:34the last thing they want is, you know, Trace Jackson Davis is doing his little thing.
02:39And question, let's go to Mark in the back.
02:42Trace, have you talked to Jonathan?
02:44Is Kaminga going to sign?
02:45What are you guys going to do if he doesn't sign?
02:47Do you think it'll be a distraction?
02:49Like, the word distraction is going to be used a billion times.
02:52Nobody wants that.
02:53And actually, there is a functional thing going on here, too.
02:56It's not just the, like, ooh, this is annoying, but, like, Al Horford and DeAnthony Melton and Seth Curry are not a lot.
03:04They can't be at Media Day if they haven't signed their contracts.
03:07And if they sign their contracts, then the number that Jonathan is able to make in year one goes down, in theory.
03:16So these things all work together.
03:18It's why all four of these free agent signings for the Warriors have not been announced yet and made official.
03:25So there is some cause and effect here.
03:29And I don't think the Warriors want to do Media Day and not introduce their new players.
03:33Like, that would not be good.
03:36That would not be good for the Warriors.
03:37It would be terrible.
03:38And they want this done so that, and even if it gets done, he may not be at Media Day.
03:44You know, let's just say...
03:45Who, Jonathan?
03:45Yeah.
03:45Sure, that's possible.
03:46If it all gets done Sunday in some way, shape, or form, no matter how the deal is done, and he's still a Warrior, he may not be, you know, all the way back here yet.
03:56And they can just say, well, he's still in transit.
03:58He's not going to be here today.
03:59But, you know, he'll be here for practice and blah, blah, blah.
04:02And he may be super ticked off, too.
04:04He may be.
04:05And, I mean, I would almost bet a guarantee that he won't be at Media Day no matter what.
04:11Even if he...
04:12I wonder.
04:13Let's just say, Grandy hits the sounder, whoosh, breaking news, and the deal is done, and it's, I mean, it's a two-year and a player option, and it's a done deal.
04:22And Kaminga's a Warrior, and he gets $75 million.
04:25I still don't know if they would necessarily want him to be there and want this to be the big part of Media Day.
04:34I don't know.
04:34Maybe I'm putting too much into it.
04:36Yeah, I don't know.
04:36I will tell you, if it's two years and a player option, he'll be there because he'll be all smiles and bells on.
04:43And I can tell you, I think the Warriors would get criticized if they do that.
04:50They should not do that.
04:52I will criticize the Warriors if they do that.
04:54Yeah.
04:54They should not do that.
04:56I would not criticize the Warriors.
04:58That's a bad, bad, bad idea.
05:00Only if they don't trade him.
05:03To me, the worst idea is he signs the qualifying offer and he plays for 7.9.
05:08I hear you, but again, to me, the player option thing makes it a much, much less tradable contract.
05:13It's going to lower the value of the whole thing and what you can get in return.
05:18It is also a precedent they don't want to set with their other players.
05:21They don't do this.
05:22They don't, they like...
05:23That's what Tim Kawakami was saying yesterday, and he's right.
05:26Very rare circumstances that they've given it out before Kevin Durant, Draymond Green.
05:30I mean, like...
05:31Buddy Heald has one, but that came with his contract.
05:34Right.
05:34He was already signed that with someone else.
05:36I think that was the same thing with GP2.
05:37He had one last year.
05:39He opted in, but that came from Portland.
05:41Portland, exactly.
05:42And Draymond had one, and he ripped up the option, and he wound up getting a new deal.
05:47So, the Warriors don't want to be put in that spot.
05:49All right, so, Bob Myers called in to say hi to Stiney, and Stiney and Gu asked him,
05:56hey, what do you think of these three things going into the weekend, and what's probably
06:01the lead on Monday?
06:03Bob Melvin stays or goes.
06:05Warriors media day, what's up with Kaminga?
06:09Or Niners-Jags, somebody won that football game.
06:12Listen to Bob.
06:13Well, you guys know what people call in about.
06:15I'm fascinated by the level of attention Kaminga gets.
06:20He gets a ton of attention.
06:21And you guys got to explain that.
06:23I think he's obviously drafted him.
06:25There's a big unknown around Kaminga.
06:27That's probably why he gets attention.
06:29Yeah, look, football's the king, right?
06:30So, you're going to get whatever happens with the 49ers on Sunday.
06:33People are going to want to talk about that.
06:34But the Kaminga thing, if I had to guess on how many calls you're going to get on each
06:39of them, I think you're going to get a lot of people weighing in on whatever Kaminga
06:42and the Warriors decide.
06:43Wow, wow, Bob.
06:44I think it's a pretty hot topic.
06:46I agree with him because unless something goes haywire, let's say Brock throws five picks
06:52and the Niners lose by 20, like there has to be some sort of discord, some controversy,
06:59something to sink teeth into.
07:01That's the reason why the Jonathan Kaminga thing has had such summer staying power,
07:05is there's disagreement.
07:07There's disagreement.
07:08There's a lot.
07:08There's a lot that goes into that.
07:10There's emotions.
07:11There's disagreement.
07:12There's controversy.
07:14There's happiness.
07:14And there's anger.
07:16And that's what makes all of this go around.
07:20That's what the internet is.
07:21Yeah.
07:21So he's not wrong on that.
07:24But did you notice something else he said in there, which is I'm really surprised at
07:28how much attention this gets.
07:29Yeah.
07:30And I think that that opinion is all over the NBA and that opinion is based on the idea
07:36of like, okay, I get it.
07:38You've got a restricted free agent and you're the Warriors.
07:41It's a big brand and there's a mystery around Jonathan.
07:44So, okay.
07:44But good Lord, this is a whole lot of you know what over a player who has not even established
07:53himself as a starter in this league.
07:55Like that, you don't find that anywhere.
07:57You will not find a comp to this in the NBA.
08:00This much talk about someone who isn't even a starter and has not ever been a star in this
08:09league, whether or not you think he will be.
08:10I don't think we, you can't argue what I just said there.
08:14He has not been a star in this league.
08:16Not yet.
08:17No.
08:17And yet he is getting a lot of this attention.
08:20And you mentioned Quentin Grimes before and just doing a quick search on the Quentin
08:25Grimes stuff.
08:26How's it going?
08:27It's a lot more quiet.
08:29Daryl Morey.
08:30I think we will get a resolution in the next few days.
08:33And so it's more a sense of, look, we want to get this resolved and you know, Quentin probably
08:39wants to be there and he wants a certain thing and we're not sure what we want to give him.
08:43This situation is a lot more volatile because it's pretty clear.
08:47And Jonathan Kaming has never come out and said, I don't want to be here.
08:51But the sense from his camp and we had his agent, Aaron Turner on the station for an hour
08:56and he made it pretty clear that there are certain things he wants.
09:00And it's obvious that the things that he wants aren't available here.
09:03And so if you do one plus one equals two, you realize that he pretty much doesn't want
09:08to be here.
09:09Quentin Grimes last year was able to go out and cook.
09:12He averaged 22 a game.
09:14He put up 50.
09:15I think.
09:16Yes.
09:16Was it on the Warriors?
09:18No, I think it was a little less than that on the Warriors, but he had a big night.
09:22Right.
09:23And he had many big nights.
09:24They were terrible.
09:25He was awesome.
09:26And so it's not a question of do we want him or does he want to be here?
09:30I think both of those are, are true, but in this one, there's so much more acrimony
09:36below the surface that that's what makes this more compelling.
09:38I'm glad you brought up the Aaron Turner appearance here on 95.7, the game that and
09:43other appearances around the, uh, the league, Brian Wienhorst podcast and things like that.
09:48Bob Myers, who of course was an agent prior to running the Warriors as their GM.
09:53Um, the guys asked him, Hey, when you were an agent, would you've ever done something
09:57like that?
09:58Would you have gone that public and negotiated that hard in the media as opposed to behind
10:05the scenes?
10:06Here's his answer.
10:07Did you ever go public with something like that or would you?
10:10I never did that.
10:11But you know what guys, the world is different now.
10:13It's a different world.
10:14It's a different people.
10:16There's no private.
10:18Everything's public.
10:19Everything's videotaped.
10:20Everything's films.
10:21Everything's social media.
10:22So I don't think anything, there's no boundaries anymore.
10:25I wouldn't have done it, but people weren't doing that 15 years ago.
10:28But now, you know, agents are, are, are out there.
10:31People know who they are.
10:32People, they have a power.
10:33And, um, yeah, it's just not, not me.
10:36He's not wrong.
10:37But when you say like, Hey, agents are out there now.
10:41Sure.
10:41They're out there more.
10:42You even notice when somebody like, this is the stupidest thing that happens on the internet,
10:47which is like some player will sign, let's say somebody signs with the Denver Nuggets.
10:52And then there'll be a follow-up tweet from a Woj or a Ramona, or if it's in the NFL, a Schefter.
10:58There'll be a follow-up tweet and be like, well, the deal is worth $102 million and was negotiated by Bob.
11:05Totally.
11:05And it's like, nobody gives a rip except for the agent.
11:09And so the agent's like, here's the deal that we're going to strike.
11:13I'm going to give you the information and you're going to give me a little pop on your Twitter feed that has 5.1 million followers or whatever.
11:22So that's the give and take.
11:23So yes, agents are more out there, but go ahead and give me the other agent who did this.
11:30Well, not this in that form.
11:33You ever seen an agent do what Aaron Turner did last week to go on multiple shows and podcasts and the rest of it.
11:40No.
11:40And, and tell them, by the way, I'll stay for as long as you want me pretty much.
11:47And it was only because he lost connection with his AirPods that he even left.
11:52I'm looking at the Quentin Grimes situation and his agent, apparently David Bauman, had said to Hoops Hype that they were disappointed not to receive a formal offer until this week.
12:06And this is a story that posted today.
12:08You know what they offered Grimesy?
12:10Apparently they offered him four years and $39 million.
12:14Oof.
12:15That's about nine and a half average annual.
12:18Basically what the offer is, it's you play on the qualifying offer, 8.7, and then we're going to give you an 8% raise for the next three years.
12:27And Grimes thinks that he's more of a $20 to $25 million player.
12:31So those sides are even further apart, I think, than Kaminga and the Warriors.
12:36But to your point, I don't know if Michael Bauman went on Philly Radio WIP and went on to multiple platforms and on and on and on.
12:45And yet, these two sides are way further apart than the Warriors and Kaminga.
12:50The Warriors and Kaminga are just one little box away.
12:54Player option, team option.
12:55Yeah, it's a big box, though.
12:56What's in the box?
12:57It's an option.
12:59Some acrimony.
13:00Totally, right?
13:01Yeah.
13:01But, I mean, just putting it into some context, if the Warriors would have offered Kaminga four years and $39 million, I mean, my goodness.
13:11Kaminga thinks he's almost worth $39 million per year.
13:14Right.
13:15But, like you've said all along, the Warriors have come up to 25 average.
13:20And they're right.
13:20Like, again, I like that Grimes is like, I'm a $20 to $25 million player.
13:24Fine.
13:25So is Jonathan.
13:26I don't know why Jonathan thinks he's a $35 million player.
13:28Nobody thinks that.
13:30Nobody thinks that.
13:32I don't know.
13:32But that's what Jalen Green got.
13:34And that's what Jalen Johnson got.
13:35And you're not those guys.
13:36Right.
13:37Even Giddey got, I think, four years and $100, which is $25 a year.
13:41And not that guy either.
13:42He's not as good as Giddey.
13:44So, anyway, I'm totally with you, but I just was thinking about, you know, as you said, is anyone else doing this?
13:50And I just saw this report where David Bauman, he didn't go on podcasts and radio with Windhorst.
13:58You know, he just talked to somebody from Hoopsite.
14:00I appreciate 650 on the text line, Boxer and Gerson work interview at the text line.
14:04I know another agent who did it.
14:06His name was Jerry Maguire.
14:08Yep.
14:09Yeah, that one.
14:09Yeah, that was.
14:11Yep.
14:12Show me the money.
