00:00Trouble in the tropics. Beautiful shot in Bermuda.
00:04Let's bring them on in. The crystal ball meteorologist Joe Lumberg.
00:08Joe, as we have plenty to talk about as we get in the next week.
00:12But last week we were talking about an area that was going to be getting some much needed rain.
00:18Yep.
00:20This upper level low means business and if you look at the big setup with that,
00:24you're going to start to pull some moisture from the Gulf of America.
00:27Dew points will get into the 60s and low 70s. A lot of water in the atmosphere,
00:31which means repeated slow-moving shower and thunderstorm activity may not lead to flooding,
00:36but hopefully this means beneficial rain for this part of the country.
00:39Some drought relief and definitely a downturn in the temperatures.
00:44And of course, Joe, we'll be taking a look at the drought monitor here in a little bit here,
00:48but let's take a look at next week. Number one story has to be the tropics.
00:53Yeah, we wrap up September and go into October and we're still not too far away from the peak of tropical season
00:59and there's trouble in the southwest Atlantic. We've already got two name storms out there.
01:03Obviously, Gabrielle's going away, but we've got Humberto. We may have Imelda before too long.
01:08Dry and warm weather will dominate from the Plain States all the way into the north and east.
01:12It's going to be cooler in the northwest and all the way down into northern California
01:16as a series of systems come in from off the Pacific and bring some rain early this season.
01:20Now, you look at the 30-day rainfall and percentage of historical averages.
01:26Obviously, these areas in here have seen excessive rains, but notice this area here across the Ozarks.
01:31Some places had like five, six, seven inches of rain over the past week,
01:34and we've seen that into the Ohio Valley, pretty much what we were talking about.
01:37We're getting it here in the mid-Atlantic, so you're getting some drought relief,
01:41but these areas are still, you know, in pretty bad shape.
01:44This was a nice little bump in the road, if you will, brought some desperately needed rain.
01:48Unfortunately, the pattern that we're going into, Bernie, favors a lack of rain.
01:53An upper-level ridge of high pressure will dominate across the nation's midsection, as it does.
01:58That means day after day after day of sunshine, low humidity, warm afternoons, cool nights.
02:04The exception to that is going to be the southeast,
02:06where obviously we're going to be talking about some tropical troubles,
02:09as there's a potential for a tropical system to come up and impact areas from Florida into the Carolinas.
02:13But the warm, dry weather goes over the top.
02:16You'll get some of those wet systems coming into the Pacific Northwest.
02:19Driving around the northeast, Joe, and I've been listening to other people across the northern tier of the United States,
02:24there's no question that the fall foliage is a little earlier this year.
02:30No question about it.
02:31You remember those cool shots that we had come in in the mid to late August and early September?
02:35It's almost as if it shocked the trees.
02:37And then you combine that with the fact that it's been so dry, the leaves just, the trees just kind of said,
02:43that's it, we're done, and they're starting to turn color.
02:45It's not uniform, but we're seeing good color now across portions of Pennsylvania, New York State, into New England.
02:50And it's not too far from peaking some of these places up here.
02:53So where it's dry, you should have some good opportunity to do some leaf peeping this weekend.
02:57Joe, for weeks we've been saying, watch the Caribbean, watch the Caribbean, watch the Caribbean, watch the Caribbean.
03:05Yeah, watch the Caribbean.
03:06You know, you like to say underneath the belly of the high, well, it'll be this big ridge of high pressure that builds in late next week
03:11across the northeast and into the mid-Atlantic.
03:14Underneath it, this is the area to watch.
03:16It's, you know, kind of warm, the water's been undisturbed.
03:19Just keep an eye on that area as we go into October.
03:22The Crystal Ball, meteorologist Joe Lumber.
