Looking ahead: Cold from Plains to Northeast; Thanksgiving storms

AccuWeather's Joe Lundberg looks ahead to next week where the Plains and Northeast regions of the U.S. could shiver from cold weather and multiple parts of the nation could have a stormy Thanksgiving.

00:00Joe before we talk about what it's going to be a very busy weather pattern upcoming for the next

00:04two weeks let's review the tape from last week. As we go into midweek though there are more changes

00:12in the jet stream and it's that second storm system that'll drag some cold air into the pattern

00:17coldest area you've seen this so far this season for the deep south and you're going to see some

00:21snowflakes in the air in places like Detroit, Pittsburgh and maybe Charleston, West Virginia

00:26later next week. And we're talking about that accumulating snow and in the Poconos and in

00:32into the Appalachian Joe as we go over the next 24 hours so you're in the long range team

00:37we're able to dissect that. All right let's talk about next week. Let's put it this way Birdie

00:42they're not going to be alone in seeing snow in the coming week or two and there's going to be a

00:47lot more cold that's going to be spread around and that's part of our three things to know about

00:51next week. Waves of cold will be coming into the northern plains and then spreading south and east

00:56all the way to the northeast as we go through the week of Thanksgiving and beyond. It'll dry out

01:00along the west coast after this weekend and Thanksgiving day yeah we're going to be talking

01:04about a storm system across parts of the country. Here's the jet stream map for the middle of next

01:08week you can see that bend in here for the middle part of the week you see the drier air with the

01:12bulge in the jet stream along the west coast still warm across areas from Texas to the southeast but

01:17cold air is trying to come in from the north and west and as this dip of the jet stream takes shape

01:22there'll be a storm system in here the question is where is it going to go Bernie? Yeah and then

01:27that's the really big question here Joe and the other question is is it weak is it strong it's

01:31strong it all depends on how much energy the west coast comes eastward but you and I worked on this

01:38map with uh meteorologist Paul Pastelok about the different scenarios. Yeah and let's take it you

01:43know one by one the the northern track would mean a slower system that develops a little bit more

01:48intensely and that means some accumulating snow on the northwest side of it and some heavier rains

01:53but then the cold air will come in but that could linger into Friday a weaker system means some rain

01:59some snow on the north side of it but it moves more quickly off the coast by Thanksgiving night

02:03so those are the two different scenarios we're looking at for that storm next week. Regardless

02:07of the scenario Joe I mean we've got some big changes coming. We do well I think there's one

02:13thing we got a key in for the long range forecast as we go into early December it's going to be

02:17stormy it's going to be snowy and there's going to be very cold air in the pattern. Many people

02:23will end up getting accumulating snow. Yes. Winter comes early at least this year. It does indeed.
