00:00On sale this week.
00:07Morris pickup, which is a 54, but what a lovely old car.
00:11I love it. You know, as everyone knows, I'm a Morris Minor man.
00:14Never was, because I wouldn't have been seen dead in one
00:17when I was 20, 30-year-old.
00:191986 Citroen Visa GT Tonic.
00:22Now, there's an unusual bit of kit.
00:24That will sound awesome under load, that.
00:26That will give you such a smile when you go on to full choke
00:29and when you open that up and it's pulling.
00:31That will be, that sound will be quite addictive.
00:35It will be.
00:36Very unusual conversion there.
00:38Don't see many of these come on the market.
00:401975 VW.
00:42Yeah, I'm living a dream.
00:43Doesn't get any better than being in Northumberland in a game.
00:46With the sun shining, I'm kind of where I want to be.
00:50Here we are then, the butcher's baker's bike,
00:52starting on a big wheel at the front, as you can see.
00:54I'm going to do a triathlon on this, that's the flan.
00:56Three, two, one, go.
00:59Oh, wheel's spinning off.
01:01Brace and I'll give you very, very popsicle off our kidneys effectively.
01:05Oh, and there we go, through the rope.
01:07The Matthewsons, a dynasty of classic car auctioneers.
01:1255.
01:13The joys of an auction.
01:15Most people will go to us out with something in mind,
01:18but come away with something different.
01:19The fun is the chase.
01:21We'll have a look and we'll advise you from there.
01:23You just don't know what's on the end of the phone,
01:25what you're going to find when you open them doors.
01:27This is a family's love affair,
01:29with motors that have lived a life.
01:31Testing, testing.
01:32Most people will buy a car because they can relate to it,
01:36maybe a car that Dad had.
01:37We're selling dreams.
01:38Right, here we go.
01:51Good morning, Matthewsons.
01:52Three.
01:53Three previous keepers.
01:55If it's running in the video,
01:56we would have had it running at some point.
01:58Here we go again.
02:00More old car business with an old car dealer in an old car,
02:04nipping home to check on the latest arrivals.
02:07They're in there all the time when we look at them,
02:09they're almost content.
02:10And then she comes out and just walks out outside.
02:14Marvin is definitely the culprit, yeah.
02:17He's a little bit nervous.
02:18He's a bit scared about the child fees and bits and pieces
02:21at the moment, as you can see.
02:23Don't quite know what to do with himself.
02:24How's Marvin stacking up as a dad?
02:26Well, he didn't pay anything yet, put it that way.
02:28I've asked Jack for that.
02:29He laughed.
02:30I don't know why he laughed,
02:31but anyway, I thought I was quite serious.
02:33We're excited, yeah.
02:34So we've got some little grand puppies.
02:36Seven, I think.
02:37Seven.
02:38So that's going to be fun, innit?
02:39All them running around the house.
02:40I don't think grandad's too impressed,
02:41but it was his idea.
02:42It was his idea.
02:43So, yeah.
02:45Marvin's a dad.
02:47And is he a dad for the first time?
02:49Second time.
02:50You get us out of it, does Marvin.
02:51Marvin.
02:52You get us a bit excited, don't you Marvin?
02:54What are you going to do with seven?
02:56I don't know.
02:57That's up to grandad.
02:58I just said I've got enough vet bills at the moment with his tail.
03:01Actually, I've heard that there might be a few lots there in the ocean.
03:06Oh, I don't know.
03:07I'm too soft though, mate.
03:08I'd keep holding them.
03:11Catching everyone's eye in the not-sure-what-category-of-vehicle-this-is yard
03:16is a VW camper with a South African passport.
03:20Quirky.
03:21That's what this is.
03:22It's a VW camper, but Juergens.
03:26Well, it nearly looks like a caravan's had an accident with a VW T2, doesn't it?
03:31Drove in last week.
03:32I've been up the estate in it.
03:34Drives quite well, actually.
03:35There's a bit of body roll.
03:36It's a little bit sort of, I won't say top-heavy, but there's a bit of body roll.
03:41And I must admit, first impressions I thought, but then you open the door.
03:52From damp 60s festival-goers to millennial St. Ives surfers, the VW camper has been a broken-down feature
03:59at the site of the UK's Holiday A-Roads for several generations.
04:05It was the brainchild of a Dutch Volkswagen importer who spotted a stretched Type 1 Beetle chassis
04:11on a visit to the factory in Wolfsburg.
04:14His quick pencil sketch became a useful multipurpose shed on wheels, and the VW Type 2 was born.
04:22South Africa's largest caravan manufacturer came up with this.
04:26The Juergens Auto Villa.
04:28Because it could barely make it up some of the country's steeper inclines,
04:32it was nicknamed the Skilput, which is Afrikaans, for tortoise.
04:37A thousand VW tortoises were made, all of them sold, and many have survived,
04:42including a surprising number now in the UK.
04:47Come in here. Come in here, look.
04:49Look at the room. It's great.
04:51And all right, wants a bit of decorating, doesn't it?
04:53And a bit of... wants a bit of TLC.
04:55Wants a bit of air in here, that's what it wants.
04:57But, look at the room in it.
04:59It's brew.
05:00You've got everything you want.
05:01Spare set of wheels, kitchen, oven.
05:04And it's spacious and light, and I think it's brew.
05:07Do I want it? No.
05:09I do too many miles, don't I?
05:11Otherwise, you'd make a great little rally barge, wouldn't it?
05:14But it'd just take you a while to get there.
05:16It wants a bit of love.
05:17Let's not get away from that.
05:19But, pull up.
05:20Slip the curtains across.
05:21Pull them.
05:23Bedtime.
05:24Doddle.
05:25Oh, hey, hey.
05:27I might even have a night in it.
05:29I'll see you tomorrow.
05:31In Shropshire, Mike Sargent's having a clear-out.
05:52What's in the barn, then, Mike?
05:54Oh, two Morris miners, butchers' bikes, bakers' bikes, tandems.
05:59There's quite a lot of objet d'art.
06:03Objet d'art.
06:05Brilliant.
06:06Can I ask you about your hat?
06:08Is that your new hat?
06:09You know when you warm a nut up, and it's red hot,
06:12and you go for pick-it-up?
06:14You always use your hat for pick-it-up,
06:16and then it burns holes in your hat.
06:18It still keeps your head warm.
06:20But I like to think it's when I'm doing thinking,
06:22my head gets so warm, it sets fire to my hat.
06:24Mike's roped in Jonathan, another moggy enthusiast,
06:30but of a younger vintage, to lend some muscle.
06:33I'm always dreaming of you.
06:37It's Aladdin's cave.
06:46This is Henry.
06:47This way a bit, Jonathan.
06:49Sorry, all the cars have got names?
06:51Oh, yes.
06:52The black is Esmeralda the skip.
06:541959, that one is.
06:56And it's like an everyday transport.
06:59So it's a workhorse?
07:00Oh, definitely.
07:01And then we've got Jeremy.
07:03Even the Jaguar tow his Y4.
07:06Y registration number, so I just call it Y4.
07:08Or wife number four.
07:10This is a unicycle.
07:16Should there be another bit to it, then, Mike?
07:19I presume there was at one stage.
07:21Were you a butcher and or a baker?
07:24No.
07:25So what was the interest in these, then?
07:27Rarity of them, really.
07:28There's just not so many about.
07:30When they started collecting these,
07:32but it seems more about now.
07:34That one's got rod tacks on it?
07:36Yeah, because it's got an engine in the back wheel.
07:39It's a BSA winged wheel.
07:42It's got a petrol tank and it runs on boom.
07:45It runs on what?
07:47Boom.
07:48You do pedal it, you can pedal it,
07:51but it's also got a motor, I think.
07:54I don't know.
07:56I just like anything old.
07:57I just like to preserve things.
08:00Henry is one of the two cars heading to auction.
08:04So when we bought it, it was just a chassis cab
08:06and I built the bodies.
08:08On it.
08:09And then just to put the milk chains on the chain carrier
08:12just to give it a bit of character for showing.
08:15Basically.
08:17Mike, is this all part of the objet jar?
08:20This is rubbish.
08:21I don't even know what this is.
08:22This is rubbish.
08:23I don't even know what this is.
08:24I think it's rubbish.
08:25It's rubbish.
08:26It's rubbish.
08:27It's rubbish.
08:28It's rubbish.
08:29In the Pickering arrival hall, Jack's seeing in a very rare 80s hot hatch.
08:47That's all factory, all this.
08:49Is it? 100%.
08:51I've never seen one.
08:52They made 500, Jack, and this is the last one.
08:57Seriously, it's the very last one, mate.
08:59Literally, it took me off to my house.
09:01Oh, really?
09:01I didn't even know you had it in the garage.
09:02I did it for about three months to give it to you lot.
09:05Go on.
09:10You might be on some weathers.
09:13Yeah, go on, you're all right.
09:18Blimey.
09:20That sounds nice, doesn't it?
09:22Look at that.
09:23Cool.
09:25Oh, fire speed.
09:27I'd better get it inside, hadn't I?
09:29Now then, guys.
09:39Good morning.
09:39Good to see you.
09:40Good morning.
09:41Just brake testing.
09:42Going out for a run.
09:43I'll just brake through tires on the flat.
09:45Nice to meet you.
09:46Nice to meet you, Jack.
09:47Hi, Mike.
09:48Good to see you.
09:49The small wheel's the one that we'll have, of course, isn't it?
09:51Yeah, because if they were tall baskets, they were baker's bikes.
09:54Yeah.
09:54And if they were lower baskets, they were butcher's bikes.
09:58Yeah.
09:58Because if you got this filled with meat, you'd be a bit of a balance.
10:02I know that all right, yeah, yeah.
10:04In an ideal world, I'd tend to agree with you, but basically, I think, whatever the butcher
10:08could buy.
10:09Well, possibly, yeah, and years ago.
10:11Yeah.
10:11And get on it, lad, and if you fall off, you'll have to pay for the meat.
10:14That's about right.
10:14Which is exactly what I did.
10:15Yeah.
10:15So I rode one just about identical to that, but you're right, yeah, you know, your baker's
10:20bike would have more volume, innit?
10:22Oh, you've got all sorts.
10:23A load of cans.
10:24Yeah.
10:24Oh, you've got half a bike.
10:26Half a bike.
10:27Yeah, it's like one of them unicycles, isn't it?
10:28Yeah.
10:29Where you're going to find a bed.
10:30Look at that.
10:31Oh, thanks, my love.
10:33Very nice of you.
10:33Thanks very much.
10:34Have you offered Derek any biscuits?
10:35No, she ain't done yet, but she's going to in a minute.
10:38Yeah.
10:39Have you got any chocolate ones, then?
10:40I've got plenty of chocolate ones.
10:41Oh, a couple of them would be nice.
10:43Derek, you've been here.
10:44Literally two minutes, and you've got a cup of tea in your hand.
10:47Oh, no, a bit steady, isn't she, really?
10:49She thought she'd have had it ready for me when I pulled up, wouldn't you?
10:51But there you go.
10:52I'm letting her off, because at least she's been and got me one.
10:54Just a minute, Derek.
10:55You've now been here three minutes.
10:57You've got a cup of tea and a Belgian chocolate biscuit.
11:01I've got more than them.
11:02I've got a pocketful here.
11:03I've just knaffled them up there.
11:05A few more in here.
11:08With the drive-home biscuits sorted, back to business.
11:12Well, these two here can go.
11:14But they're both sun tandems.
11:16Personally, I think they'll do somewhere between 200 and 300 quid apiece.
11:20They can go, then.
11:22Henry is one of the vehicles off to auction.
11:25Originally, they were sold as a cab.
11:27I built all this on after.
11:29We've seen all sorts of conversions like this to flatbeds and all sorts of stuff.
11:35On a Morris minor chassis.
11:37In my opinion, none of them have been much good.
11:39And they haven't appealed to me.
11:41But I'll be honest with you.
11:42I like that.
11:43I don't think that's really caused any sort of adverse value.
11:47This is a 54.
11:48Reserve, mate.
11:49Tell me what we've got ready for.
11:50I don't know.
11:50What do you think it'll make?
11:52Run okay?
11:53Jonathan, fire her up.
11:55It's a hard one to value, this.
12:04I'm probably going to upset you a bit here now.
12:06No, steady now.
12:07I think it's six or seven grand.
12:09Could make eight or nine.
12:10Yeah.
12:10That's the only way I can put it.
12:11I'll accept that.
12:14Right, what else we got there, mate?
12:16Also heading Pickering Way is a Mark II Jag.
12:19Good looking old car, aren't they?
12:21Eight or nine, maybe ten max.
12:24Yeah, I don't think it'll do above ten.
12:26So, ten grand for the Jag, seven-ish for the Morris pickup,
12:30and the maths isn't getting any more precise than that, really.
12:34I think it'll probably do 30 quid.
12:37You've got some bikes.
12:38We're going to have three bikes that are going to fetch,
12:40let's say, 150.
12:42A little bit more, maybe.
12:44Not a great deal more.
12:45The tandems are going to fetch between 200 and 300.
12:48This one here, probably 500 or 600 quid,
12:50I'm going to go on that sort of line.
12:53So, with a head full of figures and no real clues to a total,
12:57Mike persuades Derek it's time for a lunchtime meeting
12:59with his accountant.
13:07The latest arrivals are all lined up in the showroom
13:12and, making Dave go weaker than knees,
13:15the Citroen Visa GT Tonic.
13:18Bloody hell, it's the last time I saw one of them.
13:21Citroen Visas, where are they gone?
13:23There's hardly any in the UK.
13:24And then you get this limited edition GT version,
13:27of which I think was only about 500 made to start with.
13:30And then as life's gone on, it's become even rarer.
13:34And then to find one in the condition of that,
13:37that's had a tremendous amount of love and care
13:39and money spent on it,
13:41really is a fab little car.
13:43It's the car itself, isn't it?
13:44And the condition of the car itself
13:45and the presentation of the actual car itself,
13:47which I think is up there at the top,
13:51especially for a Citroen Visa GT.
13:54Never delved into why they fitted this.
13:58But you would think it must be something to do with wheel size
14:00and it must be something to do with competition.
14:04Yeah.
14:08Look at that.
14:08Not only are they quite impressive,
14:11two great big car operators at the top,
14:13but it's more so the condition as well
14:16of inner wing strut tops, chassis legs.
14:19It's quite a big set up there for a little car.
14:22You know, it's a biggish lump that.
14:24And to see all the spot welds where they should be,
14:27firewall there, chassis legs,
14:30all look nice and clean and smart.
14:32In our world, you're on a rally stage
14:33and you see something coming towards you,
14:35you think, wow, that sounds fit.
14:37That sound is not coming from out of that pipe at the back.
14:40It's coming from here where it's all being generated.
14:43And they, with that big air filter there,
14:46that will sound awesome under load that.
14:48That will give you such a smile.
14:50When you go on to full choke
14:52and when you open that up and it's pulling,
14:54that will be, that sound will be quite addictive.
14:58It will be, yeah.
15:00I would be extremely disappointed
15:02if that didn't do really well on auction day.
15:04I think it's worth £10,000 all day long.
15:06Just an impressive little car, that.
15:07Lovely, lovely little car.
15:13Derek and Mike have arrived at Slape Airfield,
15:20home of Shropshire Aero Club,
15:22a cafe, two runways,
15:24Mike's accountant
15:24and the UK's cheapest aviation fuel.
15:31Derek's always said
15:32a flight over Shrewsbury is top of his bucket list.
15:34Today, pilot Max Metcalfe is making dreams come true.
15:40So what we'll do is take off,
15:41climb out to the west,
15:42get to about a thousand feet.
15:43Obviously, the cloud isn't very high today.
15:45Good.
15:45All right, we'll have a good look around the countryside,
15:47maybe a quick look at Shrewsbury.
15:48Lovely.
15:49And then back in.
15:49Fantastic.
15:50Yeah, and then you will take it by yourself, okay?
15:52Yeah.
15:53Crack it.
15:54So if you're ready, we'll crack it.
15:54Yeah, we'll go on.
15:55Yeah, yeah.
15:56Right.
15:56See you later.
15:57Hopefully.
15:58Good afternoon.
15:58The Romanus 05 right-hand circuit is the QFV 1025,
16:02QMX 1035.
16:04You've loaded Derek up with some bikes.
16:06Now what have you got him into?
16:08I don't know, really.
16:09I offered him to bring me for lunch
16:11and then it's just developed from there, really.
16:13So we've come to the local airfield
16:14for a cup of tea and a sandwich
16:16and he's gone off in an aeroplane.
16:17Aeroplane, yeah.
16:18I hope he'll come back.
16:25What do you think Derek will be thinking now?
16:27He's left terra firma.
16:30Things will be clenched.
16:51Thanks for that, mate.
16:52Seriously, it's been absolutely brilliant.
16:54Super job.
16:55Lovely.
16:57Thanks, Mike.
16:58Right.
16:58Super day.
16:59You had a good time.
17:00Brilliant, brilliant day.
17:01Excellent.
17:01As long as you're happy, that's amazing.
17:02One of the best days we've ever had,
17:03no question about it.
17:04And this was totally unexpected.
17:05You haven't bought the plane, have you?
17:07No, no.
17:08It's the club plane, apparently.
17:09It's their runabout.
17:11Their sort of club trainer type thing.
17:13Yeah, yeah.
17:13Easy to fly and, you know,
17:15it's the trainer in the world, apparently.
17:17Not in the country, in the world.
17:19About 1975, that plane.
17:21I suppose it's like an old Ford Sierra, really, isn't it?
17:24That's about what it is, I think.
17:25An old Ford Sierra.
17:26Yeah.
17:26So, brilliant.
17:27So, you've been up in a Ford Sierra?
17:29Yeah.
17:29Ford Sierra with wings.
17:31Two litre GXL.
17:32And it's been an absolute joy.
17:34Anyway, we're going to get cold.
17:36Good show.
17:36Lovely.
17:36Lovely to see you.
17:37It's auction day, and there's a new hopeful on the camera team.
17:551986 Citroen Visa GT Tonic.
17:57Now, there's an unusual bit of kit.
17:59Five, seven, five, eight, eight thousand pound, eight thousand pound, eight five.
18:03Eight thousand five hundred only.
18:05Find another one of them.
18:06Now, there is a rarity.
18:07I've got more on the machine, gentlemen.
18:09Eight thousand five.
18:10Come and see us on that one, please.
18:12A deal isn't done, and the Citroen Visa is entered into the next auction, with a price drop.
18:19Seven thousand pound, then, away.
18:20I'll take that seven there, Will.
18:21Seven and a quarter, then, we have it.
18:23Seven, two, fifty.
18:24Eight thousand, then, for the Citroen Visa GT.
18:27It's the Tonic model, as well.
18:29Eight and a quarter, down there, says David.
18:31Eight, two, fifty.
18:32Eight thousand, two hundred and fifty pounds.
18:34The Citroen Visa GT Tonic is snapped up by an enthusiast in Malvern.
18:40We'll be putting it through its paces on the Shellsea-Walsh hill climb.
18:44Henry, Mike Sargent's Morris Malt truck, is making its Pickering debut.
18:53I love it.
18:54You know, as everyone knows, I'm a Morris Minor man.
18:56I never was, because I wouldn't have been seen dead in one when I was 20, 30 years old.
19:00I used to sell them, but only for profit.
19:03I wouldn't run around in one.
19:04I mean, they've got no street cred whatsoever.
19:06So, none of us had any interest in them at all.
19:10But then, when you get a little bit older, you start appreciating the simplicity, and the way they work,
19:15and just what good news they are, really.
19:18They're just charming.
19:19And the fact that it's a little pickup, it's just great.
19:22That's what appeals to me.
19:24And it's just been beautifully dressed up.
19:27But everywhere you look is in lovely condition.
19:29The interior, the cab, is lovely.
19:31But look how good that floor is.
19:33You can't knock that, can you?
19:34What a lovely floor.
19:36I think you can buy the original rubber map for it.
19:39You can buy everything for these.
19:40This is the beauty of it.
19:41You can buy just about every nut and bolt for that car.
19:44Indicators.
19:44We've got semaphores.
19:45They'll obviously come out and light up, as we know.
19:47Split screen, early dashboard.
19:50Crying out for a set of wing mirrors, as you can see.
19:53It's 15 quid or something, you know.
19:55Someone, at some stage, aftermarket, has washed it on.
19:58Look.
20:01What a level little car that is in there.
20:04Lovely condition.
20:05Clean up.
20:05Mint, look.
20:06And so reliable.
20:08Everything's available, like I say.
20:10Won't be as popular as if it had a standard factory body.
20:13But the body's been built so nicely.
20:15Lovely coach-built body in it.
20:16With that body on, it's probably going to make eight and a half.
20:19So for less than ten grand, you can have a really little eye-catching pickup.
20:23But it looks pretty unique.
20:25So I love it.
20:26I think it's great.
20:27Especially dressed up the way it is.
20:28Little Iris has had some lovely babies.
20:48Oh, no, that guy is.
20:52No.
20:54This is Bentley.
20:55Bentley?
20:56That's Bentley.
20:56Oh, yes.
20:57That's it, yeah.
20:58Who have we got there?
20:58Do you have a red collar?
20:59Col.
21:00That's Col.
21:00Col.
21:01You're doing the same thing as us.
21:02Yeah.
21:05Oh, and you were sweetie.
21:07You're a good boy.
21:08It's several weeks since the puppies were born, and Grandad Derek couldn't be prouder.
21:13You've spent good money on a box to put them in.
21:16$14.99, that.
21:18That's how much it was.
21:19Don't let them run about in here.
21:20Open the towels out in the puff, they'll be out there.
21:22You know, if you let them out here now and they'll start running about, it's a hell of a job I've heard of me, man.
21:25Yeah, we forgot that we're actually having to do our job.
21:28But you can't not take five minutes to have puppies inside of me.
21:34This is the best box of memorabilia we've ever had in.
21:38Look at him, look.
21:45It's auction day, and as per reputation, puppy dad Marvin is getting about.
21:53Very unusual conversion there.
21:55Don't see many of these come on the market.
21:56A deal isn't done, so a few months later, and with a reduced price, the South African camper heads to auction again.
22:20There you are. Where are we going to be on that? Who wants to start me at £8,000?
22:24I know they're a little bit quirky, a little bit odd, but look like half of us up here in this room today.
22:28But there you go. Third and last time, provisional at £8,000.
22:34Sold. And the cute immigrant is heading for a new life in Northumberland.
22:38They're hard at it in the Pickering Departure Lounge, which gives Derek a chance to scope out Mike's bikes.
22:48Yeah, a little BSA wing wheel, look. Look at all the cables, look.
22:54Honestly, I couldn't see the sense in them, but I suppose they were cheap and cheerful transport just after the war, you see.
23:00A few of them down our street, going to work on them. I can remember that, though it was yesterday.
23:04This lady's frame, that one, that's a bit unusual, isn't it?
23:07Trade bikes, these are close to my heart, these. I've got an affection for these.
23:11I've got quite a collection myself, actually.
23:13And then you've got these here, these tandems. All I know is that a mate of mine had one when we were 13, 14, 15-year-old,
23:20and we nearly killed ourself on it so many times.
23:22My mate came round one morning, picked me up, go to school, and the brakes had been squeaking like mad on them.
23:27And I jumped on the back, I said, you stopped the squeak? He said, yeah, I oiled it.
23:31Well, we found out he'd oiled the bloody thing. We got down the road and couldn't stop at the junction.
23:35Good job, there was nothing coming, because straight out, straight across the road.
23:38I said, you bloody fool, fancy putting oil on the...
23:41You see, well, it stopped it squeaking. It stopped everything, didn't it?
23:44But this is the bite to buy. I would love to see this restored.
23:48Trouble with it, you know, if you're lucky enough to buy that 150 quid,
23:51you're going to spend so much on it to make it look lovely,
23:54and it's still only going to be worth 650 quid. It's the easiest way to blow a grand.
23:59So these are a labour of love. You do them for a labour of love. That's what you do.
24:03You know, there's no point in looking at them on a commercial basis, because it ain't going to work.
24:11The Humber wing wheeled bicycle with BSA engine, there we go.
24:16400, thank you. 400 then, 425, 450, 475, at 500 pound bid, 525, at 550 pound bid, at 550 pound and sold.
24:29The Sun tandems both sell for below their estimate.
24:32Third and last time at 190. Third and last time at 180 pound.
24:41Hammer's coming down at 60 provisional. Here we are then, the Butcher's Baker's bike starting on a big wheel at the front, as you can see.
24:48All done, 110. Third and last time provisional, 130.
24:58The owner of the bikes, Mike Sargent, is looking for a bit more than a few hundred for his Jag Mark II.
25:04When they're riding, they're a lovely old car, aren't they?
25:08Timeless, aren't they?
25:10Once a fair bit of paintwork, once you start getting round it, all these aren't actually water bubbles, it's micro blistering.
25:16So why does that happen?
25:17It's effectively moisture under the colour. Simple as that.
25:21And it literally just bubbles up.
25:23You could pop these and you get a little bit of water out. Shame, isn't it?
25:27And that's down to poor prep, basically.
25:31Poor prep, poor environment.
25:34If you were to, arguably, paint the panel out here today, it's damp in the air, you can feel it, can't it?
25:40It's freezing.
25:41Not many people paint outside nowadays, do they?
25:43Most things are done in an oven.
25:44Firstly, to help things dry, you know, it cures them quicker so you can get more work through.
25:49Fine, lovely.
25:50But more importantly than that, it's done in an oven for a dry environment.
25:54It's already been painted on the top.
25:56And then after the top, it's been painted on the bottom, look.
25:58Because there's your overspray there, look.
26:00That's where it's been masked.
26:01So that's been masked off.
26:02That's been painted.
26:03So there's your line.
26:05I suspect the bottom would have been similar to the top.
26:09And indeed, it's starting to come through again.
26:11So, yeah, you're just papering over cracks.
26:15Generally speaking, it's a nice car.
26:17It wants headlining, putting in.
26:18Seats want cleaning, but they're okay.
26:21Car pits were arguably homemade, but...
26:23It's all right.
26:26It's a good little either a user or an improver, isn't it?
26:31I see the car personally somewhere around the...
26:34I don't know, seven or eight grand.
26:37That's where I see it.
26:38And I arrive at that figure because if it was lovely, it would do probably mid to late teens.
26:44So that then leaves somebody some scope to do the imperfections.
26:53Pre-auction browsing, and it's time to make your mind up.
26:56Do I want it?
26:57And have I got the money?
26:59I never was a big fan of a red Jag, but Inspector Morris, he liked his Jag, didn't he?
27:06And that was a red one.
27:08As a kid, my dad had one.
27:09And they used to float along.
27:11The comfort and the leather and the worn-up dash.
27:15Just really are a great car.
27:17Oh, they're brilliant cars.
27:19Very comfortable.
27:20Sit there with automatic gearbox.
27:21You just put it in gear and she just goes.
27:24I absolutely love them.
27:26The Jaguar 2.4, 240 Jag, basically there we are.
27:36£5,000 now we've got.
27:38£5,250, £5,500.
27:41£5,750 we've got.
27:43That's £6,000.
27:44That's £6,250.
27:46That's £6,250.
27:48Then hammer's coming down at £6,250.
27:51Extremely provisional.
27:53No, he's off the Jag.
27:55He won't give any more.
27:56No.
27:57To be honest, if it was my car, I'd want more than that for it.
27:59Six and a quarter.
28:00It's not enough money, is it?
28:01I know what's painting, but six and a quarter.
28:04I'd outbid him on that and then send it out for painting.
28:07So, that's it.
28:09Fluffed it.
28:10But hang on a minute.
28:12An exciting postscript.
28:14Driving off with the Jag here, having shelled out nine and a half thousand,
28:19is a man who has kicked his Aston Martin out of the garage
28:23while he sorts out the paint on the Jag that has a new forever home.
28:28It's a good idea.
28:29It's a good idea.
28:30It's a good idea.
28:31It's not good for me.
28:32I mean, it's what I've got to do for a few days.
28:33Sitting around like this is not good for it, really.
28:45It's what I've got to do for a few days
28:47just to sort of repair the bit of damage in here, I suppose.
28:51But it's not ideal, really.
28:53It's a lot better when I'm moving about.
28:55So what is it you actually have done?
28:57I've had a full knee replacement, but I've been waiting two years.
29:01And when I went to do the pre-med thing,
29:02he fortunately knew who I was and what I'd do,
29:04and he said, but if you can assure me
29:06that you can stand on your tiptoes after two weeks,
29:09I'll sign you off and you can drive.
29:11So let me get this right.
29:12Not only do you do deals with people for selling cars,
29:15you've now done a deal with the surgeon.
29:17There's always a deal to be done with everyone, John,
29:20because you do.
29:20You do a deal all the way through your life, don't you?
29:23He realises that I'm not daft and that I'm not dangerous,
29:26and if I wasn't capable of driving, I wouldn't do it.
29:29And I would. I genuinely wouldn't.
29:31And then I've got to keep an eye on the dogs, puppies.
29:34There's like seven of them,
29:36and they're just everywhere around you,
29:38you know, nipping at your heels and nipping at your slippers
29:40and trying to trip you up.
29:43So, yeah, just got to be a bit careful for the next few days.
29:46And I reckon I'll be back to work next week.
29:48Well, something like that, what do you imagine?
29:52You're not going to wee on my shirt, are you?
29:54This is Bentley.
29:56Yeah, he's a runt.
29:58Always keep the runt. That's what I've learned.
30:00As a runt, you'll turn out.
30:02Blooming brilliant, you will.
30:04Absolutely brilliant. You're lovely.
30:06You're no trouble, are you, really? You're all right.
30:13It's auction day.
30:15You still got yours, Charlie?
30:17And guess who's back at work?
30:19Just in time to auction off the pickup,
30:22he picked up when he had his old knee.
30:24Two hundred pounds.
30:27Maurice pickup.
30:28She's a 54, early one, as you can see.
30:31She's in lovely condition, but what a lovely old car.
30:33Split screen, all the rest of it.
30:35Five thousand pounds away.
30:36Five one.
30:37Five two.
30:38Five three.
30:39Five thousand four hundred.
30:40Five five.
30:41Five six.
30:42Five thousand seven eight.
30:44Five thousand eight.
30:45Five thousand nine hundred.
30:46Six thousand.
30:47Six one and two.
30:49Brilliant show vehicle.
30:50Six thousand four.
30:51Third and last time submitting.
30:53Six thousand four.
30:56Got bid to six four.
30:57Spoke to the vendor.
30:58He would like a bit more.
31:00Had a chat with the buyer.
31:01He won't increase.
31:03Spoke to the seller.
31:04He's accepted the money.
31:06Simple as that.
31:06And everyone's happy.
31:11People remember the 205s.
31:14They remember the Metro Turbo.
31:16They remember certainly the RS2000s,
31:17things like that, as the early 80s.
31:19Hot hatchbacks.
31:20It's the kind of forgotten hot hatchback, the VESA.
31:22Certainly, when I've been speaking to people,
31:24they're going, where's this coming from?
31:25What is this?
31:26I think it's almost like an Italian design sometimes.
31:28It looks a bit like a Lancia.
31:30Find another one out there.
31:31I'm sure there are some, but I don't know where they are.
31:34Buyers tend to get a bit excited
31:35when they finally land their dream vehicle.
31:38And it's safe to say that Jim Cochran's latest purchase
31:41has a sense of déjà vu.
31:44So there's a car that a good friend of mine,
31:46in the 80s, grew up driving.
31:48He had one, he had a GT, not the Tonic,
31:50but he had the Citroën VESA GT.
31:52He was the cool kid with a cool car.
31:54And I had a chat with him over Christmas this year,
31:56and he said, are there any about?
31:58And literally a month later,
32:00found the one at Matthewsons.
32:01In Tonic version, they only made 2,000.
32:03So from those 2,000, this is a 1986 car.
32:07I don't really know how many of those are still in existence,
32:11in any condition,
32:12or certainly in very good drivable condition like this is.
32:14Thankfully, this rare French fancy
32:18has found a new home amongst some fellow ex-pats.
32:22Well, I've got a couple of cars, really.
32:23It's not really a collection.
32:24So the 4CV was the one I got sort of 2019.
32:28I got the Alpine a couple of years later.
32:30And then the sensible family car.
32:31And weirdly, it's another French car.
32:33It's a Peugeot 308 diesel.
32:36So I think, yeah, I've got a Citroën,
32:37I've got Peugeot, and I've got a Renault.
32:39Any other cars I need to start thinking about?
32:41So you'll have any car as long as it says French?
32:44I just find that adds to their charm, if anything.
32:46Yeah, you just need a good insurance policy
32:48and a good tow truck.
32:49A breakdown provider.
32:51Yeah.
32:51In fact, a couple of the guys I go to the car shows with,
32:53as we meet new guys at shows,
32:55we say, well, do you want to join our little group?
32:57I said, there's two provisos to be in the group.
32:59You've got to have a picture of your car
33:00in your garage at home.
33:02And you've got to have a picture of your car
33:03and a tow truck.
33:04Otherwise, you're not coming in the group.
33:06So on your car,
33:07just tell me what's different from the box standard Visa.
33:10So on this one, it's got these bolt-on panels,
33:13which are different from the standard Visa.
33:15It's got a couple of spoilers on the rear.
33:19It's got one on the bottom of the tailgate
33:21and one at the top.
33:21And of course, underneath the bonnet,
33:23what we've got in the engine is a very different engine.
33:26Citroën did the Visa in the GT form,
33:28which was a larger engine.
33:29And the engine itself has had some tweaks done to it
33:32by a motorsport engineering firm in Wales somewhere.
33:34So it's one of those.
33:35It's unique.
33:37How does it make you feel driving, Jim?
33:39Well, it makes me smile.
33:41If I'm going to have to go somewhere,
33:42you might as well go in a bit of style
33:44and enjoy your ride there.
33:46Because it can be so mundane and boring
33:48these days driving on the road.
33:50I intend to keep it a while,
33:52have some fun in it,
33:53take it on some trips,
33:54get out to some shows.
33:56Maybe it might get different.
33:57But no, I'm going to use the car as much as I can
33:59and get out there and get seen in it
34:00and let people just have a look around it
34:03and ask the same question.
34:04Where did you get that from?
34:13I don't know what that wine is.
34:15Me neither.
34:16Hopefully nothing to worry about.
34:20Fingers crossed.
34:21Oops.
34:21Row bump.
34:22Oops.
34:23First row bump we've done in this.
34:25Oh, well, no, that's speed.
34:28In Whitley Bay,
34:30the South African camper
34:31is being put through its paces
34:33with new owner Neil Kellam
34:34and his daughter, Caitlin.
34:39I'm looking at taking early retirement next year
34:41and we'll be moving up here.
34:43And I want to be able to go out and about
34:46and enjoy the Northumberland countryside
34:48and have it as day camper.
34:50And if we want to stay overnight somewhere,
34:52we can do it.
34:53We're not tired to just coming home every day.
34:56So it's just to have our flexibility.
34:58Go out, do some fishing somewhere,
35:00go walking
35:01and maybe even a little bit of cycling.
35:03Maybe not cycling
35:04because it's quite hilly.
35:08This is a Juergen.
35:09It's a T2 camper van conversion
35:12for the South African market.
35:14I like quirky.
35:15I like different.
35:16And yeah, it grows on you.
35:19And what was it caught your eye about this one?
35:20The amount of work the seller had done to it.
35:23It's got the mains hook up
35:24and the solar.
35:25Got a tow hook.
35:26Not sure how good that's going to be.
35:28What's he planning on towing?
35:29Maybe a bike rack.
35:31It's got a refurbished engine.
35:33New weathers.
35:35Needs a little bit of work.
35:36The steering, the suspension.
35:38Normal running bits and pieces
35:40just to tighten it up
35:41because it wallows a bit.
35:42It's got a couple of leaks
35:43but nothing that worries me.
35:45Let's put it away.
35:46I mean, it's come from South Africa.
35:49You know, it's not used to British weather.
35:51The little Juergen has played a big role
35:53ticking off several firsts
35:55for dad and daughter alike.
35:57Have you got other vintage vehicles?
35:59Yeah, I've got a 24-year-old Skoda Felicia
36:03which I used to run around in.
36:05So this isn't your first old thing then?
36:08No.
36:09But it's probably the oldest
36:11and my first camper van
36:12and my first Volkswagen.
36:14My plans on it
36:15is go through all the running gear
36:17because that to me
36:17is standard maintenance.
36:19It's a 50-year-old van.
36:20You want to make sure
36:20all those bushes
36:21and everything are good.
36:23Are you going to try
36:24and bring it up to the 21st century?
36:25Yeah.
36:26Try and put it in a toilet,
36:27maybe a shower,
36:28better cooking facilities,
36:30maybe have a barbecue outside,
36:32put an awning on the side of it,
36:34have a nice sound system in it,
36:36maybe a TV,
36:37make it comfortable for sleeping.
36:39Is this van bigger in your mind
36:41than it actually is in reality
36:42with all these things
36:43you want to put in it?
36:44In my mind when I was buying it,
36:46it was probably bigger than reality.
36:49No, I know that there's
36:50very limited space
36:52as to what I can do.
36:53No, it's just I'm looking forward
36:54to seeing the 40-inch TV
36:56and the toilet and the shower
36:57and the jacuzzi.
36:59Yeah, the jacuzzi.
37:00That's what the tow bar's for.
37:04Oh, it's beautiful.
37:06Couldn't be a better spot.
37:07No, absolutely lovely.
37:08Shall we have a brew?
37:10Yeah, let's do it.
37:10Go on then.
37:12Have you got a name for it yet?
37:15Yes.
37:16Oh, God.
37:16Yeah.
37:18Yeah, it's a Winnie-Woo too.
37:20A tribute to our dog.
37:21She's an elderly Labrador.
37:23When she passes,
37:24she'll live on in this.
37:26She's been special for us
37:27and we hope that this van
37:29will be special as well.
37:31Yeah, I'm living a dream.
37:33It doesn't get any better
37:34than being in Northumberland
37:35in a gale
37:36with the sun shining.
37:37I'm kind of where I want to be
37:39and I've got the freedom of the road.
37:41Bit windy though, isn't it?
37:43Yeah, it's definitely
37:44a bit on the breezy side
37:45but at the end of the day
37:46it's the North Sea behind us
37:47and the North Sea's always lively.
37:50It's such a thrill
38:01and with the online bidding
38:02it's so easy to get carried away.
38:04You know, you set your limit
38:05and then you go past your limit
38:06to your next limit
38:07and then you go to your next limit
38:09and before you know it
38:10you've paid way too much
38:11but you've got what you want.
38:14In Tadcaster,
38:15Richard Yeomans
38:16is waiting for the arrival
38:17of a fellow trades bike fan,
38:19Derek.
38:20I have a Matthewsons addiction
38:22these days
38:23inherited from my father
38:24so I've got signs,
38:26I've got bicycles,
38:27cars, motorbikes,
38:29anything that just catches my eye.
38:31So here's the butcher's bike
38:32that I bought from Matthewsons.
38:34I have done
38:35a limited amount of work on it
38:37so it's in a usable condition.
38:38The frame is pitted
38:40and it needs repowder coating.
38:42The brakes,
38:42one of them doesn't work at all,
38:44one does sort of work.
38:45I'm intending to change the seat
38:47and of course
38:47I will have to get
38:48a lovely basket
38:49rather than this one
38:50to go in the front.
38:51So I've got somewhere
38:52to put my helmet.
38:54Once used by shopkeepers
38:55across the land,
38:56trades bicycles
38:57with a practical way
38:58to transport goods
38:59to their customers.
39:01But Richard
39:01has something
39:02entirely different in mind.
39:05Well 12 years ago
39:06when I turned 40
39:07I decided to have a go
39:08at my first ever triathlon.
39:10Many people do
39:10when they get to a certain age
39:12and I turned up
39:13at the beginning
39:14not realising
39:15what I was getting into
39:16and there was
39:17racks upon racks
39:19of very expensive
39:20looking bikes
39:21and I was on
39:21a very cheap road bike
39:23and I just thought
39:24wouldn't it be great
39:25if I had a butcher's bike
39:26and I could overtake
39:27one of these professional riders
39:28and so it's been
39:29a 12 year ambition this.
39:32It's unlikely
39:33that Derek
39:33and his new knee
39:34will be joining Richard
39:36on the triathlon
39:36but he does have time
39:38for some unorthodox training.
39:41I nearly didn't find you.
39:42What a pleasure to meet you.
39:43Lovely and a pleasure
39:44to meet you.
39:45What a lovely spot you've got.
39:46We've come here today
39:47obviously to look
39:48at this trades bike
39:49and everyone knows
39:49I've got a soft spot
39:50for trades bike.
39:51My first company vehicle
39:52when it was a trades bike.
39:53How about that?
39:54When you think about it
39:55I had a company vehicle
39:56when I was 13.
39:57Not many people can say that
39:58but it just happened
39:59to be a trades bike
40:00unfortunately.
40:01And this is it is it?
40:02Is this the beast
40:03you're going to use?
40:04This is the beast
40:04I'm going to use.
40:05It's ready for renovation
40:07shall we say.
40:08You're going to do
40:09this triathlon?
40:10I'm going to do
40:10a triathlon on this
40:11that's the plan.
40:12It's swimming first
40:13then cycling
40:14and then a run.
40:16Wow blimey.
40:17And how five
40:17have you got to ride this?
40:18Well luckily
40:19the one I'm going to do it on
40:20is about 12 kilometres
40:21I believe
40:22but there are some hills.
40:2312 kilometres on this?
40:24On this.
40:25That's far enough.
40:27The odd brake doesn't work
40:28but the back one does.
40:30Will you be able
40:31to stop a ride
40:31on the back brake only?
40:32Don't worry about stopping.
40:33No no no.
40:34I've got a big runway
40:35for us to stop on.
40:36Have you?
40:36Yeah.
40:37Fantastic.
40:38And so
40:39with an athletic attire
40:40of a flat cap
40:41a pair of brogues
40:42and a broom
40:43Derek and Richard
40:44prepare to give
40:45the Brownlee brothers
40:46a run for their money.
40:48So what are we attempting
40:49to test with this course?
40:51Maneuverability.
40:53I mean basically
40:53on this surface
40:56it's a good job
40:56you ain't got any brakes.
40:57If you started
40:58whacking his brakes
40:58on up there
40:59you'll have a front wheel skid
41:01then we'll have
41:01the ambulance coming.
41:02Oh I'm ready for this.
41:04We've sort of got
41:04the grand master here
41:05haven't we?
41:06Yeah now Derek
41:06tells me he can do it
41:07in half the time
41:08that I can
41:08but today unfortunately
41:09you can't prove that.
41:12Right off you go then
41:13we count down from three
41:14and I'll stop it
41:15as soon as you hit that rope.
41:16Three
41:16two
41:17one
41:18I'm going to get
41:21them sausages on sand.
41:26Yeah we'll just make it
41:28just a weenie
41:30a little bit more difficult
41:31just a tiny bit.
41:32Three
41:33two
41:33one
41:34go
41:35Oh wheel's spinning off.
41:39Grace and I were getting
41:40very very hot
41:41so we can't have
41:41things effectively.
41:42Oh and there we go
41:43through the row.
41:45He's still done well
41:46put between
41:4713-14 seconds
41:49now then
41:49shall we
41:50spring our little
41:51surprise on him?
41:52It's safe to say
41:53that Richard's
41:54ecstatic with his latest
41:55Matthewson purchase
41:56but Derek's keen
41:58he experiences
41:59a more
41:59authentic ride.
42:02Have you got a
42:02forklift?
42:04We need to go get
42:05the farklift truck
42:06that's even more
42:06worrying.
42:07With his knee on the mend
42:08Derek's back
42:10to his delivery days.
42:11This is your dummy load
42:12if you like.
42:13Is it potatoes?
42:14Yes.
42:14Surprised you didn't
42:15bring me two bags.
42:16You've got to beat
42:1613 seconds.
42:18Three
42:18two
42:19one
42:20let's go.
42:21Oh this is nothing.
42:25Sliding all over
42:26that doesn't matter.
42:27Coming up to the
42:28finish line.
42:30No brakes again.
42:3112 seconds.
42:33Another world's
42:33race course.
42:35Ah
42:35there you go.
42:37It's exactly what
42:37happens with the
42:38trade bike
42:38when you get off.
42:4012 seconds
42:41that was absolutely
42:42brilliant.
42:42Well done.
42:42Oh it was brilliant.
42:43The potatoes were
42:44going a bit lopsided
42:45that time.
42:45They are a bit now
42:46yeah.
42:46I'd have lost my
42:47delivery if I'd
42:47gone much further.
42:49I'll have your
42:50potatoes back in.
42:51I'll go deliver
42:52them for you.
42:52We'll put them
42:53in the cab.
42:53There we go.
42:54Oh here we go.
42:55There we go.
42:56We knew that was
42:57going to happen.
42:57If we just polish
42:58them off nobody
42:59will know.
43:00Clean them up
43:01quickly.
43:01That's it.
43:02Put them back in
43:03their bag and
43:03scarf them.
43:04Exactly.
43:06I'm a member of
43:07the Butcher's Bike
43:07Owners Club
43:08and yeah
43:10properly affiliated.
43:12Yeah well 12 seconds
43:13you want a record
43:14holder at the moment
43:14I'll challenge you
43:16but for the old
43:16knee you see.
43:17If you come back
43:17in a year
43:18we'll have another
43:18go.
