00:00on sale this week the Cortina here has got the makings of a hell of a car carry
00:11yourself a clutch cable timing belt emergency fan belt set of spark plugs and a bit of fuel
00:17line if you can't get out of bother with them you're in bother brilliant the 1978 Leyland
00:26a little maxi basically with all old maxi's it was like a plastic interior heaven forbid it got
00:32sunny out to sit on it because it will burn you're alive the guard the Douglas there probably one of
00:36the most highly respected reproductions of the world-famous AC Cobra most Cobras that come through
00:42here don't impress me that one he really does this is the Capri which was bought new by the family
00:48it's the love of your life isn't it Bill was the love of my life it was the Matthewsons a dynasty of
00:58classic car auctioneers 55 the joys of an auction most people will go to us out with something in
01:05mind but come away with something different the fun is the chase we'll have a look and we'll advise you
01:10from there you just don't know what's on the end of the phone what you're gonna find when you open
01:14them dads this is a family's love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most
01:21people will buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car that dad had you're selling dreams
01:26right here we go at first glance he could be forgiven for thinking that it's situation normal but oh how
01:40wrong you are don't a polishing wheel well there's this seven booking wheels there if you want one
01:51used Jack little Jack and sooty are attempting to bring order to the chaos that is Derek's automobile
01:59related memorabilia storage system I love memorabilia like I love for Cortina's because they sell
02:06sometimes you do feel like a bit of a dumping ground call past Matthewsons on the way to the
02:11skip right all the responsible for allowing all this in grandad I love this I'll have to have a bid for
02:20this grandad loves his memorabilia you can't say no he has got better though a lot of stuff in there to
02:28go through yet just little come down here whoever can walk straight up and then so you clear as day
02:35this is for June because before June was up on that shelf over there down here over there over there
02:40here's from the roundabout put my wages up grandad in Nottinghamshire Doreen Fletcher is prepping
02:55for Dave's imminent arrival to pick up her two cars her nephew and niece David and Sheila Mitchell
03:02are giving her a helping hand oh it was well covered into never had polish on it isn't it never
03:11didn't don't polish I've never polished it did Bill do it did Bill polish it well he wanted to
03:17over keen on polishing anything it's lovely ain't it ain't it Doreen and Bill were married for 46 years
03:26they took great pleasure in their motoring holidays Bill passed away a few months ago and it was his
03:33wish that Doreen's 1300 XL Mark 1 Capri and his 2 litre Mark 3 Cortina gear were both to go to
03:40auction at Mathewson's the Capri appeal to you didn't it yes the color and the style I think he's got a
03:49nice style Iconic they call it it's warm well aren't it he went up East Coast along the top and back down
03:58the West Coast and then along the Cornwall the only thing he says we'll never do this again was when we
04:05went down to Cornwall and we couldn't get in it anywhere everywhere were full and Bill found the field
04:12parked the car I slept in the back which is the best seat and he slept in the front and when we got
04:21up next morning he says we're never doing that again and you didn't what about Cortina then oh I
04:31aren't interested in that I think there was an advert in the evening post so it had been laid up a while
04:37Bill went had a look and the two front tires were rotten so I had to pick a couple of tires
04:42up and he drove it down here I wasn't interested in them sort of details all I was interested on was
04:50going out in it yeah that's the love of your life I love this one I know it's the love of your life
04:57isn't it yeah Bill was the love of my life it was there was and he did if I said I wanted something I got it
05:06lucky I used to think I was the Queen when I door is 93 next month she's still independent doesn't
05:20want carers I'm still capable I'm not old I'm only 92 so so we're working around that she still carries
05:28her driving license around with her just in case you never know and she says if I go out of this
05:34bungalow I'm going out feet first like Belle did Derek's spotted something of an old friend yeah J2
05:51Austin J2 I like these old girls that they're so reliable they're quite nice to drive they're not
05:56bristling with power but they're quite smooth and quite nice it looks very sound it looks so original
06:02just about identical to one that I drove as a 17 year old as a mobile butcher shop sadly we don't have a
06:12picture of Derek as a butcher but we have found this artist's impression of the young Matthewson delivering
06:18his chump chops in a J2 with its twin windscreen wipers and optional heater the memories of your
06:271960s British high street come flooding back when you see a J2's face it was a firm favorite of the
06:34delivery vehicle the column gear shift and underfloor engine meant the driver could slide across the cab
06:40front and make his drop-offs from either side of the vehicle the J2 pickup sold well your milkman had
06:49one and it could double as a useful getaway vehicle after a visit to the dogs the post office had J2's
06:56Woolworths had them they were TV licensed detective vans and the Beatles went to Hamburg in one J2's a part of
07:04our commercial history but a bit like Woolworths they're mostly memories I'll just sit in for old
07:13time's sake it takes me back all those years rolls back the years when you get into something like
07:17this this of course was was enclosed in our one there was a fridge behind here which you plugged
07:22in of a night and it stayed pretty cold all day this has all been repulsion and very nice and very
07:26comfortable column change which I love I absolutely love column change but dark things like there's no
07:33gator down there we don't matter but I see the road down there so you know you've got a nice breeze
07:39nicely up your trouser leg wouldn't you out there and that but that's what you you had so what you put
07:43up with in them days when I was a kid with caravans like this me dad had Bedford's and it was just so
07:49lovely to get out of a weekend and of a night time you didn't you couldn't afford every night to go out
07:55to a pub even McDonald's and what have you and have your tea out as we do now you know you had
08:01to have it in the caravan so mum dished it all up you know potatoes and all that business and
08:05it was lovely when you think about it it's a shame what we do now like a throwaway society aren't we
08:11and we go out we buy all this bloody packaged food and chuck it in the microwave and all the
08:16packaging's got to be disposed of and all that and then this day you went camping and when you
08:21camped in the old days you'd done your own cooking and preparation and stuff like this has got the
08:25facilities to do it fantastic I hope I really do hope it doesn't turn out like a body van that would
08:32be almost criminal but you can imagine if you if you stripped out the interior which would oh I
08:37couldn't bring myself to do it I could could not do it but if you did you know it's all built isn't
08:42it you know your windows are there it's set up but I could not alter that that is just so lovely
08:47value-wise I don't think it's gonna fetch a lot of money really it wants a big paint job it's got
08:53some corrosion issues as you can see I personally think it's like four and a half thousand quid
08:59myself that's what I think it's worth so all in all I think it's lovely but I still think it's 4500
09:05Dave's arrived in Nottinghamshire to collect a couple of crackers from Doreen Fletcher you remember
09:19learning to drive didn't you Mark four yeah yeah two litre GL you know I'd only be 11 12 but the
09:27first car I ever drove was my mum's little Fiat van little Fiorino van I think it was but then I
09:32remember a few weeks later I was at work and there was a two litre GL mark four in red in the yard
09:38amongst other things now I used to get the keys and see which one I had some petrol in and I just
09:42remember one particular Saturday morning the car that had some petrol in was a two litre GL Cortina
09:47I've got news for you Dave yeah I suspect this hasn't so yeah fond memories of mark four quarter all
09:53I wanted really for my first car at that age was a two litre gear Cortina and what do we have a
09:58two litre gear Cortina all right now then how are you are you okay nice to see you how long have
10:07they been in there then about 10 15 years do we think at least at least the Capri Doreen's
10:12very difficult many many years long that first job for the removal team is clearing the garage
10:20anyone wants a cheap bucket of coal give me a shout yeah if your dad was here he'd be taking that
10:27with yeah never deal with it wouldn't he while he was here here and then send me down for it in
10:31about a week's time yeah yeah yeah yeah lot number three I'm a set of governing tools just having a rake
10:39about yeah you made 500 spiders homeless there can't be many a three as far as running free running
10:57and have all the tires pumped up after being in the garage for 15 years or so I was the first to
11:03say I want that one now I'll be the last to say to raw right I'm gonna go then thanks ever so much
11:17come on I know it's a sad time isn't it it's always sad when the car goes
11:30after Jack's revelation that his grandfather has a hoarding problem
11:56all the responsible for allowing all this in grandad here comes another family bombshell
12:03dad's getting on a bit yeah dad's getting on a bit he likes I mean look at him here I know look
12:11I know you like a maxi don't you oh I do yeah maxi or an allegro or an ambassador yeah I am an
12:17ambassador call a maxi I think a British laden vehicle should be compulsory if everyone had something
12:24from British laden I think the world would be a better place and so with all his father's words
12:30of wisdom to accompany him Jack heads north up the B12 57 and across the moors via Stokesley still
12:37wondering why me and why a maxi I'll tell you why I'm going because it's been parked up for the last 20
12:45plus years Darren Lister is clearing the decks ahead of Jack's arrival for the maxi that has been a taxi for cats
12:57couple of cages here there's the cages at the back there might be one or two inside as well when we get
13:03in there was a cat needed rescued or something like that the girls fair play to them be straight
13:08there and rescue the cast really good with them so as well as cats there's girls sisters in fact three
13:14of them and they had parents and a maxi are you still with us I think Audrey bought it in 1980 and it
13:24was wheeled into the garage in the summer of 1999 and it hasn't moved since so we're talking about 25 years
13:32now it's got a load of stuff inside which we're known that but around the outside it's got loads
13:37of stuff I mean here's our deck chairs we've got the croquet set and radiators I'm getting the impression
13:44this car this garage belongs to quite an old person yeah so going back in history a little bit mom and
13:52dad lived here with the three daughters and they moved into this house in 1957 the three sisters lived
14:00here unfortunately we've only got one sister left hasn't been driven for you know 25 years so without
14:08putting it bluntly who are you that I'm their next door neighbor it's been a privilege to meet them and
14:16to know them and to help them and that you know I was speaking to Margaret just a couple of days ago
14:21and she said it was Audrey's favorite car she had quite a few maxis did Audrey which is that this white one
14:27was a favorite car when she bought it from a local British Leyland dealer she was given a certificate
14:33of excellence for the car and also a photograph in a folder of the car at the garage on the forecourt
14:40on the day she bought it where do you start with a car described as having it all by an unkind press
14:48referring to the list of things they felt were wrong with it the maxi was to be BL's Cortina beater more
14:55space inside a hatchback it had many things the Cortina didn't have but without the joy but despite the
15:03car's early setbacks the maxi appeal dealerships found customers returning their early cars with broken
15:09gearboxes and then ordering a new one because they liked it maxi owners were loyal and sales were
15:17okay but ultimately BL's lack of investment and confidence in the car did for it they made all
15:24the bad things good enough but they never changed the shape of it the maxi was clever spacious and dull
15:31and not what the 80s wanted there aren't too many survivors now but if you see one on a show field
15:37it will be surrounded by admirers whose dad had one with all old maxis it was like a plastic interior
15:47you know heaven forbid it got got sunny you had to sit on it because it will burn you're alive and
15:52that but yeah it's nice inside the headlining is absolutely immaculate so yeah a bit of dust I think
15:57it would really clean up great with the smokers have you got a smoking smell inside or no no they
16:02they weren't smokers and they weren't drinkers they were methodists so it's going to be a very clean car
16:07yeah it's a I'll tell you what I'll open this boot I've got a rake here to keep the boot open
16:16which refuse no it's an optional extra I have a feeling Mr Mouse has been in the boots just from
16:27all this shredded up paper and that I think he might have had a nest in there maybe 10 or 15 years
16:31ago I'm not sure but I wouldn't put my hand in there it's an old car it's probably been a very
16:36old mouse as well to be honest long gone now I hope it's auction day and amongst the sweet
16:50treats on display a blast from Paul's past me grandad always had a motorcar around of some sort
16:56always he wouldn't go anywhere in it not really but it was there wasn't it and he'd go out on the drive
17:01like get out the way from the old nan I suppose to have shot at times he'd make his own cup of tea
17:05in it and just just potter just took me right back to being a little tiny kid and I always looked up
17:10to me granddad I spent a lot of time with me granddad because that was always working see so
17:13all words my nan and granddad brought us up a fair bit so but I do miss him hmm if he was here now we'd
17:20have been all over that like a cheap so to be fair if he was still here now I'd have bought the bloody
17:23thing for him and just gin him it and he could have just played with it couldn't he even if he didn't
17:27drive it wouldn't have mattered would it he could just play with it no bother at all yeah the Austin
17:32Bluebird the highwayman super bit of kip it's just so so lovely 1959 ever so original absolutely lovely
17:39inside lots and lots of interest in it during the week 4,000 pound away third and last time
17:45provisionally four or five to Gary or five probably not the old do-free off again like I did the Austin
17:54Bluebird is off for a new adventure with a Matthewsons regular in Suffolk Jack's drawn the
18:04short straw yet again his mission to shift the Austin maxi which has been garage bound for 25 years
18:12Aaron how you Jack how you doing you all right yeah yeah good thanks good look at this then blimey what do you think
18:19see it up close now it's been sat here a little while on it I think it came in in the summer of 99 did it
18:26hasn't moved since blimey it's not kept too bad though was it really I know there's a bit of bubbling
18:31around the on that front wing as you see there I can see that there soon get a wing though underneath the dust and a big big
18:37clean and polish that's quite a level thing my dad's got a soft spot for these he's got a massive soft spot
18:43for anything British laden and Honda C90s he's obsessed with them I can't get too excited about
18:48them truthfully no he loves another Ford is it it's not a fast forward it's not a fast forward have you
18:53had the engine turning over or anything no no not tried batteries dead and that's all you know that's
18:57it finishing that yeah I'll move a couple of things better get loaded anyway aren't we but with decades of
19:03belongings and a flat tire or two Jack will have to hang fire oh blimey I got electric one through
19:11they do electric ones now you know Darren are we on a bit of a workout just come back in 15 minutes
19:24right let's give it a push oh she's lovely in for it
19:29first time in daylight for 25 years yeah I think it looks great it's got the rust but it looks great
19:38it looks really really good gosh it's the new testament a little bit of light reading for Derek I think
19:45are we lined up that side Darren that way a bit
19:58you see the glory of the dust on the windscreen now thanks very much for your time yeah hey no thanks
20:02I'm a good old Jack
20:11amongst the luring lots a cult classic under Paul's professional gaze all right wants a bit of paint
20:18work but she's an early Capri it's got the makings in it a little bit there a little bit here look
20:23usual usual spots generally speaking it's kept marvellous isn't it look at that
20:29off to all these here turret tops and things fabulous never mind tidy fabulous all right got
20:36a little bit on the front and the back edge of the front wings but again they used to rost out didn't
20:41they just for fun look at the tailpipe cover look look so the exhaust looks a little bit prettier
20:48it's little things in it really I think it's great I do a recommission a good service in that
20:53recommission and some sympathetic paint work and try and keep as much of the original as pos and then
20:59you can stand back and say didn't have to paint it lovely in it I'm assuming it's going to be a
21:04real low owner car it's clearly been nurtured hasn't it all its life if it were me and I specifically
21:10wanted a really good one owner low owner mark one Capri yeah I'd give eight to ten for it I would
21:16honestly because it's not rotten as a pair most of them are rotten as a pair they're horrible bloody
21:20things aren't they but this one and all right it wants a bit of love but no I would I would give
21:26eight to ten for it definitely definitely yeah
21:33in Pickering a very interesting new arrival a Gardner Douglas Cobra replica
21:51how long did you have the vehicle for 20 years and it's got 500 mile on do you think we haven't
21:56driven it enough I've just had a new knee in I'm having another new knee in so we're having a bit of
22:01a restart selling all those motors and then we'll probably start again and Hawkeye Matthewson doesn't
22:07miss a beat what body gardener Douglas we built it I bought the chassis when I was 40 and I'm 62 now
22:17it's got a 354 back there thing four speed GM first quick shifter about 350 horse in a 5.7
22:25litre Chevy it's a good car but we don't use it when you get a bit older you're not so keen on riding
22:30about in Cobras it represents a cheap gardener Douglas and then we spotted an expensive gardener
22:37named Derek all in the working day mate all in the working day after this I'm going to clean the
22:42loos clean the sinks tidy up have a sweep up you're never complete with this sort of work can you
22:47there's always something for good but I don't mind it actually it's a bit like painting once you start
22:52it's therapeutic so I don't actually mind it really but someone's got to do it there's a Gardner Douglas
22:59just come in if they reckon to be a good body then he's got a good combination there good body right
23:04engine if you like there's all sorts in the pilgrims and all that sort of it but they reckon to be
23:08possibly the best body shouldn't really say that but someone will argue the other way but certainly a good body
23:23Paul's admiring the rest of Dave's delivery
23:25that's a novel mirror if it were me mirror there and take them ones off but nevertheless it doesn't
23:33really detract from the car as such maybe he had a battery pack in his knee or something I don't know
23:40an 18 000 miles showing which might be right might it no wear on steering wheel that limited wear on the
23:48pedals you never know but it's a lovely car isn't it correct period woolen over covers look at them
23:57there bro aren't they wasn't owned by a mechanic then was it that was when motoring was motoring
24:04wasn't it carry yourself a clutch cable timing belt emergency fan belt set of spark plugs and a bit of
24:11fuel line if you can't get out of bother with them you're in bother aren't you a good clean alone and
24:19you're looking at a completely different car aren't you what a lovely lovely straight old thing it's the
24:25best one we've had for ever i would think or at least the most original one yeah i actually kind
24:30like the color must be getting old i must be getting old yeah i won't say what we would call it but it
24:38involves a creek and brown and all right i know there's a few dings and a few marks and bits and
24:44pieces but what a fabulous example most of them are rotten as a pair and had loads of filler and loads
24:51of paintwork not that one Cortina is going to do five or six in it i would have thought a cracker special
25:00the browsers are out and that cracking Cortina is proving to be a big draw i had one of these at
25:08age 17 when i passed my driving test back in 1988 my first car this is exactly same color exactly same
25:14spec same roof same everything paid 325 pounds for it i come from reading at 200 and whatever it is
25:21miles a fair trip that's left at five o'clock this morning initial thoughts it's uh it's very good it
25:26just depends on the price it's going to go for on the day it's going to be a lot more than 325
25:31pound i think it's going to be about seven but only time will tell it's just a wonderful experience
25:37of them just go down memory lane again and hopefully end up with the car again but we'll we'll see on
25:42the day the Cortina here has got the makings of a hell of a car i've got lots of interest on my sheet
25:51there's lots of people on the phones here today as you will see at five thousand pound for the
25:55Cortina five two five thousand two five four five six right we're in six thousand pound on the net
26:02six six thousand two with mark six four on the internet seven four with amy it's gone to seven
26:09four seven six seven six with day six he's gone on seven eight eight two with amy eight four's internet
26:16eight six with amy eight eight with mark nine thousand problem amy's been all right thank you
26:21very much nine two bye bye nine thousand eight amy's big nine nine nine ten you come this far
26:28you might as well ten thousand pound ten thousand pound amy's bid there gonna go at ten thousand pounds
26:36amy's bid at ten thousand pounds
26:38that Cortina smells right and if it's retained that that that odor then it's obviously been a
26:46non-smoker and it ain't done a lot of work because you lost it and i think you've done 18 000 miles that
26:52tells me it's right now this is the sister car to the Cortina this is the Capri which was bought new by
27:00the family so we've got four four one four two four three four four four five four six four seven
27:09four eight four nine five thousand six two six two with andy fresh bitter six two six two six three
27:16marks back in at six three six four with dave six four six five mark six nine six nine it's gone straight
27:23to six year old six thousand nine you might have done it there dave i think six thousand nine hundred
27:27pound it's david's bid seven and he sneaks in at seven seven thousand five seven six seven six seven
27:35nine seven nine eight eight thousand pound with andy eight one eight one eight thousand one eight one
27:42it's going down to david eight thousand one hundred pounds well done well done well done well done
27:50thanks bye bye so he made an eight hour round trip from milton keynes to come and view it and
28:00he just really liked it like the history with it and was determined to get it and so he wants to keep
28:06in touch with the family as well and just follow on the history really really excited to restore it
28:12and admits he probably spent more than what some people would on it and he's no doubt going to spend a
28:16lot more so yeah seems happy though sounds like it's gone to a good home it does yeah i think it's
28:22gone to a loving home certainly the post-auction chaos is well underway but dave sneaks off to indulge
28:34in a guilty pleasure you said i said you said the world would be a better place if we had the maxi are
28:41you getting into a better world as we speak i am i am and how is your world better
28:48it's just a nicer place to be in here john it's a lot nicer than out there shall i just shut the door
28:52and leave you there please i never thought in a million years i would be an ambassador for austin
28:58rover you see what i did there i did see what you did see what i did yes but it's all agro really
29:02isn't it but you cannot help but love these i mean you couldn't give them a birdie away could you at
29:08one point some things are just so bad they're good aren't they there's just something about them there
29:14is i can't put it into words but i'm gonna have to buy one would you buy this one no because i haven't
29:19got time to do the work the projects are always a little bit tricky to sell and they're more tricky
29:24than ever at the moment because the cost of work on some of these things oh blimey if that's not a
29:31genuine sight john tell me what is he even still got the plastic clips and the splash guide on the
29:37front yeah to stop the water as it comes in the front yeah obviously the union got involved i'm
29:43sure and they said where should we put the electrics tell you what we'll put them at the front where all
29:48the water goes in yeah that's a good idea a bit of ventilation in the wing there and then she's
29:54going to want and then have the availability of wings for these and in their wisdom they obviously
30:00welded the wings on as opposed to ford that had the foresight to bolt them on so you could take
30:05them all off in a couple of hours i like that hydroelastic suspension and that sort of wallowy
30:10feel the wallowy yeah i do i like that i love all that you're at sea aren't you yeah i thought you
30:17didn't like boats uh oh i love boats i just not a massive fan of being on them when they sink
30:23you'd go an awful long way to find a more genuine car wouldn't you
30:26so if if genuine as a value then we're up and running aren't we well we put under the hammer
30:31a maxi a year maybe on average it will only be a few hundred i'm afraid i can't see it going into
30:39four digits it just wants that bit too much doesn't it i hope someone takes it on
30:44around the corner the cobra replica is mesmerizing derek with its charms it's as good a body as i've
30:56ever seen it's very obvious to me that it started with a really really good mold very nearly golf in
31:03it look at that beautiful i'm really you know not only the shot of it i mean the shut lines i'm
31:08talking about a very very level body got the right engine chevy engine a little brock heads and such
31:16like which is the top notch apparently everything under there looks to me like top notch the most
31:20important thing is it's manual gearbox the interior is lovely even my choice of color i would go with
31:25that color i'm a sort of a biscuit color man really this upholstery with a red pipe in and a red
31:30carpet i think looks superb this here it's exceptionally nice so i think it's superb even
31:37down to little head restraints you know which are unnecessary but quite nice the build quality
31:44the presentation the overall appeal of a car is as good as i've seen one of these so i rate it
31:5110 grand buys you a very basic cobra replica 15 grand buys you a nice one 20 grand buys you one of
31:58the best in the country 25 buys you probably are the best in the country so i don't know where this
32:03is rated but all i can say is that on presentation and appearance and quality i think it's as good as
32:10i've seen nice alloy wheels as well with nice three years spinners look i do appreciate something that is
32:17nice straight level proper well prepared well presented car that's it most cobras that come through here
32:26don't impress me don't impress me they really don't impress me that one it really does
32:42in bickering the new filing system is going well sparky sparky looking for spark plugs right
33:00thank you you haven't seen these spark plugs anywhere have you there must be plenty in here yeah that's not
33:06the one i don't think it's quite big enough no they're master cylinders lockheed i got a distributor
33:18no ah ah wait a minute
33:24yeah whoa oh
33:29that's got to be one big engine that's going to take that
33:31champion sure is
33:42with the usual mayhem it can only be auction day it's yours yep it's yours
33:48and sooty's champion spark plug is making its debut 575 the large plastic display spark plug 50

34:47sold at 550 well done thank you very much
34:53the garden douglas there probably one of the most highly respected i would think reproductions of the
34:58world famous ac cobra a lovely machine as well looking a million dollars 18 and away please will
35:0418 19 20 000 but 20 000 found 22 50 21 250 at the back 25 25 25's gone 26 is andy at the back 27 i've got sam
35:1727 250 28 3 quarters andy northampton's in 29 and a quarter andy sam's out andy at the back
35:28northampton 29 and a half 29 and three quarters 30 northampton and a quarter says andy andy you're in
35:36the driving seat at the moment at 30 250 for the first for the second third and last time
35:42it's all well done well done guys at an impressive eight grand over the estimate the cobra has flown
35:50past everyone's expectations including derrick's
35:58my very first car was the mark four fortina two litre gear in that color that specification that roof
36:05that interior exactly the same as that car so i've been looking for a
36:10a replacement to my very first car for approximately six years not found anything that's
36:17ticked all the boxes until this car came along so i went with it this might just be a classic car match
36:23made in heaven the last time we saw paul atkington he'd driven over 200 miles to set eyes on the 1977
36:31ford cortina gear it's going to be a lot more than 325 pounds it's just a wonderful experience of them
36:38just go down memory lane again and hopefully end up with the car again but we'll we'll see on the day
36:44i paid 10 000 for it i initially valued the car at 7 000 which is where i think it probably should
36:50have been but i wanted it so it was dig deep and pay the money now the cortinas found a new home in
36:59berkshire alongside paul's ever-expanding collection i've got quite a few cars the first one austin allegro
37:06which my granddad's from new i've had that for over 30 years now i've got an allegro estate a very
37:13very original car and very early austin mini metro in a very unusual color as well i've got an original
37:20mini cooper s very late rover maestro as well and paul's the man with all the gear and all the ideas
37:28so paul a little bit of dry weather for 10 minutes yeah she's doing well aren't she she has done well
37:33there's a little bit of body work that still needs to be done on it float both front and rear bumpers
37:38that will need to be addressed so all across here uh there's a few little dinks in the paintwork there
37:45there's another one around there somewhere this ford badge shouldn't be on the car so that just needs to
37:51be peeled off this is all original paint as far as i can tell it's had absolutely no paint on it
37:57whatsoever over the years both the mirrors on top of the wings they are non-standard so those will be
38:02removed there'll be a paint just on the top of the wings here we'll do as little paint work as we can
38:06so keep the car as original as we can bumper should be a little bit further towards the back of the car
38:12the gear badge is at a funny angle the gentleman who had the car before me he's fitted these mud flaps
38:18they're non-standard they're a bit rubbish they need to come out when you're finished with it will
38:23this be the best cortina gear in the uk i like to think so whether it will be or not i don't know
38:28i'm sure there's another one out there somewhere i get the impression though you're a bit of a
38:31stickler to detail yes i've got quite a few cars and i do like looking after them and keeping them as
38:36original as possible and this one fits into the collection beautifully yeah you start the right car
38:41to begin with you're laughing so very pleased for now it's a car to be enjoyed in all seasons
38:50uh we've literally had everything thunderstorms a little bit of lightning i think at some point uh
38:54hailstones sun now thankfully rain everything you can think of all in one day third time the car's been
39:01used since it's been back on the road it's done more mileage today and it's done in 20 years she's
39:07held up really well a few big puddles we went through um it cut out in one of them but it
39:11restarted again it's very smooth they always were very smooth these cars they're a poor man's
39:16rolls-royce i suppose in a way if you're going to get a forward you wanted the gear that was the car to
39:20have and this is about as good as you're going to get now i think there may be another one out there
39:25more original than this i'd like to think there's still some more out there somewhere but i'm very
39:31pleased i've got this i'm quite good at acquiring cars but not very good at getting rid of them so
39:38once i get a car it generally stays with me i don't move them on and there's nothing to suggest
39:43i'm going to move that on yeah i'll probably end up keeping it for everyone a day
39:46it took me a long time maybe 30 40 years and some of these bands here have been in here 25 years
40:04and never be for sale and all the rest of it i've collected over the years and i don't know why
40:09because i don't like doing the job no more but just what i've done since i was 12 and had a living out
40:14of it and i just think it's nice to keep it that's what i like about coming here sometimes have
40:19a cup of tea and reminisce a little bit in suffolk retired ice cream man gary sutton is doing his
40:26morning round when you're young and you get married your wife at christmas and your birthday
40:33you own your presents you get some aftershave pair of pants and some socks but when you get to 65
40:40she buys you an horse so i've had a few horses years ago but that's the cheapest
40:44source i've ever had to run because i ain't got to feed it and it don't make a mess
40:47some people said well you bought it so why not i've got the aftershave got the pants and i've got
40:51the socks so who bought the mannequin i don't know really he's got me boots on i don't have
40:55them jeans i don't wear jeans and we bought that coat got the wig for him that's what i used to look
41:00like when i was there you haven't changed a bit gary i don't know about that but um they said elvis
41:05president's dead i don't think he is i think he's been on the ice cream so is this the biggest collection
41:10of ice cream memorabilia i don't know anybody else who's got this and if they have let me have a
41:16look i ain't being greedy i just like to keep it all together gary is already a firm fixture of
41:22matthewson's and he was last seen escorting a coffin off the pickering premises there you go
41:29nope don't ask us either good old boy so it made perfect sense that the latest addition to gary's
41:36ice cream emporium is the 1959 austin bluebird camper van it's a gary not an ice cream van this
41:45ain't no it was gonna be so i brought it home to make it to an ice cream event resprayed it put a new
41:51clutch in it had the bumper powder coat of chrome done a few little bits put my granddaughter's name on
41:57it bethany she's only 17 it's got to be named because it's a bethany in it turns out bethany was
42:02a bit flaky on the idea of another ice cream van so the bluebird stays put as an original camper
42:10she's original panels on it all the screws are all original not been touched or nothing it's had a
42:15nice coat of paint on it and then when we get around the back here it's all nice all the little lights on
42:20it all the old hand all the old clips of brass or whatever they are all the old windows put all new
42:25bolts stainless steel bolts in the engine the wife cleaned the curtains put them in the washing machine
42:29we've finished that back door up we've got a pack of biscuits down there we'll knock them out in a
42:33minute we'll get a cup of tea you've got a time clock on here some speakers look so we'd be all right
42:37a bit of 60s music a bit of dine de ross a bit of barry white we'll be away won't we but done it as an
42:41ice cream van oh it'd be lovely and i'd have it signed with an old sign right and it wouldn't be all
42:46modern fabs and knobbly bobs and all silly things over it so i'll keep it in character with
42:51the 60s at the end of the day it ain't original is it and all them boys out there and they've been
42:56doing the job as long as me they know it ain't original i think you've got to be as old as me
43:00to work it to appreciate it so at the end they leave it as a camper yeah it's nice but then you go
43:05enjoy it
43:23so
43:35We'll see you next time.
