Transcript
00:00on sale this week can we just have a quick look see what we're up against yeah
00:10yeah a bomb find Aston Martin DB4 extremely valuable get a bit of this stuff cleared eh
00:19be careful Pete mind them rats 1959 Nuffall got us making a feeling a typical farmer he's kept
00:28the back probably he's kept the brakes only one good thing he hadn't had the air around the tires
00:32does he know he left that yeah that comes with it what a beast she's an evil thing in it God why
00:40eat the corruption and rubbish so in six weeks time this comes up how are you selling it dead
00:48straight right nice original tractor that's well worth restoration don't laugh it's a fact now who's
00:57going to be interested in that let's be honest struggle selling it this one right we are here
01:02lot 500 is about to commence very very rare as we know I think it's going to surprise all of us
01:08have you got a figure in mind Richard I have to tell you we've got 79 registered bidders
01:13the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55 the joys of an auction most people will go to a
01:24house out with something in mind but come away with something different the fun is the chase we'll
01:29have a look and we'll advise you from there you just don't know what's on the end of the phone what
01:33you're gonna find when you open them doors this is a family's love affair with motors that have lived
01:39a life testing testing most people will buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car that dad
01:45you're selling dreams right here we go quick service before you head down the a1 we're down to
02:00Colchester get into the rotten thing wow look at that I think we might pop a bit of oil in there
02:10you know that's a bit like the machine we're picking up tomorrow in there we're off to go just
02:18to pick up a bomb find so it'd be a real horrible thing but of course extremely valuable very very
02:28valuable and then down there good creep and been off for a little while we get a pair of grips on that
02:34got a move of triumph TR7 first and then pull it out and winch it out so yeah it's gonna be
02:40a little bit of an effort really you know don't see too many of them of course so no do a lot of
02:46money let's have a look when we see it well this hasn't been open for a long time as you can see
03:08there's no roof that disappeared many years ago and here we've got the car which has been here I
03:14should think probably 40 years plus Colchester is an ancient town with roots that stretch back past
03:21the Roman conquest of Britain it's a fitting place then for a project that involves a touch of motoring
03:27archaeology with a very special car that dates back to 1960 and is owned by John Godfrey's brother
03:35this is gonna be a surprise he bought the car from a cousin of ours that lived in Gloucestershire that
03:40dealt with classic cars and things like that although at the time it probably wasn't a classic car the last
03:49time I saw this car it was in absolutely pristine condition and drivable must be pretty good piece
03:58of tarpaulin to keep the car in this considering it's better than I thought actually not quite sure
04:07what that is we've got the spare wheel which is in pretty good condition really I should think you'd be
04:13out put that on the car now if you had a puncture the Aston Martin DB4 Stirling Moss drove his to
04:24races Paul McCartney gave Jane Asher a lift home in his it's one of the greats a car with Continental
04:32flair that made it look oh so bellissima and with all that best of British engineering that made it sound
04:38sensational a new db4 would have cost you three thousand seven hundred and forty six pounds seven
04:45shillings and eleven pence including purchase tax the convertible version which came out a couple of
04:51years later was 300 pounds more this Aston hails from a time when blokes in brown coats took weeks to
04:58shape elegant curves in aluminium on an English wheel to come up with a thing of beauty those craftsmen made
05:06just twelve hundred db4s in five years which is why for many this Aston is the most desirable of the
05:12most desirable kidding we should mention James Bond at some point I'm not quite sure why it was left in
05:24the garage at the time the years just slipped by and the garden got worse and worse and it comes to
05:29time and you couldn't even get down to the garden to get to the garage anyway and it's just been ever since
05:34really I love these wheels with the spokes in don't get them these days beautiful my brother's tough for
05:43the stroke in March 23 he's in no position now to make a decision about it under the dirt which is
05:51about four inches deep it's kind of protected the car really a re-spray wouldn't go amiss I don't think
05:57but uh it's not uh it's better than I thought it was going to be I'm pleasantly surprised really
06:06my brother's in a nursing home at the moment and fees are quite high and he has to fund himself so
06:11any money's returned from it when it's sold will will go to help his nursing home fees and give him a
06:19better quality of life hopefully hoping he'll understand that it had to be done I'd like to see
06:25it go to someone that's going to restore it and look after it and give it the love that it hasn't
06:32received for the last 40 years so hopefully it will be a good end to the story a happy ending anyway
06:39I like I like the old American ones and I like I don't know all of them
06:57I like the really vintage ones don't I the really old ones that probably aren't practical at all
07:04we might be dreaming a little bit but it's nice to come yeah it does fire your imagination that's
07:10for sure if I could go back I'd like an Austin 7 that was that was my first car it was a mini but
07:17like it they were known as Austin 7s it used to have this starter button on the floor you know
07:23it's absolutely amazing but had some fantastic times in it you know
07:27while the motors continue to arrive Matthewson's crack father and son team are off to collect a pair
07:38of rusting tractors it should be fairly interesting because apparently Mick who owns them according to
07:47dad Mick's dad would never put batteries on tractors he'd either park them on a hill or tow them off to
07:52start them and leave them running all day so they ain't got any batteries on so that'll be
07:56interesting anyway it's a classic bit of Yorkshire time isn't it isn't it yeah won't buy a battery but
08:01we'll buy three tanks of diesel instead we're late as ever and now we're going so on that note see
08:12you later why can Derek not have one lorry that is just nice
08:26I'm not into vintage tractors for vintage sakes when people start quoting different types of
08:33tractors it don't really mean a lot to me all we do all these are these tractors have just a straight
08:37work mix a farmer a practical sort of chap who's been working this land since the 1980s I think the
08:47public let me see large farms when things are a bit more afterwards but this is a small family farm
08:55there's not a lot to spare to be honest with you yeah yeah that's the best way of putting it yeah
08:59thing pull stop we always break eventually and yeah you can buy new ones I suppose but just as you'd
09:06put a bit of baler band on there just put that on there just pull it like that it pulls a stop that
09:11way and it springs back again and that's how you stop it with a bit of baler twine it works every time
09:16every little bit of brass helps that's why it's time to say goodbye to two old workhorses now you've
09:23got that no field I don't remember my dad bought it but I think it would be around about 1980 I
09:28would think are we going to use the word basic with this then well it is basic yeah it is I mean
09:33point out some of the quirks of it because I notice we've got a block of wood oh I think that yeah I
09:39think the air intakes got a bit disconnected so we stick that block of wood underneath and that just
09:45holds it up in the right position you see just age and time we just things are just worn on it a lot
09:50the engine last engine that was in it the push rod came out the side so my father put a a wagon
09:55engine in it enough field wagon engine in it this hasn't been used much for quite a few years apart
10:01from starting it up to put the antifreeze in for winter time it's never been parked inside so it's
10:06going to get weathered isn't it 1980 on would you outside yeah it's a long time isn't it is it can of beans
10:14what's oh no that was just the exhaust if you leave it outside you want to put that on the exhaust
10:19stops water getting down the exhaust and into the pots and then you get what you call hydraulic locking
10:27take that off put that up there put that on so the can of beans goes with the tractor does it oh well it's
10:35anybody who buys it that's extra they have to pay extra for that can how special is that did you have it for your team
10:41I got it out my mother's dustbin I think and then we've got this fordson my father split it and put a
10:51six cylinder the wagon engine in it so it's a bit better than a bit of baylor bannies this this is a
10:55piece of bought it's a piece of what something must have been bought at one point oh I see right if you've
11:00bought something better than a piece of baylor bannies that that's a six cylinder my father put a
11:04wagon engine in it I think it's 130 horsepower a heck of an engine though it's time by
11:11it has some power it's even a good track in its time it has yeah there's that there does seem to
11:16be a lot of twine and bale on this yeah yeah it's cheap yeah starting these battered relics can be a
11:26bit of an issue there's no batteries on most of them they run off the slope and so you're not
11:32worrying about electrics so to start it we're jump starting them yeah yeah yeah pull them off the
11:37track to them down the slope yeah that sort of thing they run up and they start very well shot
11:44an easy start and you're away they've been worked and passed their best and eventually I might be
11:51going the same way worked and passed my best so we're going to put you in the option as well
11:56there we are guys looks easy
12:26easy yeah lovely to see you John and we'll get on with it shortly friends of mine here Robert they've
12:34kindly come from Chelmsford we don't know what we're going to encounter hey that's so let the heavy mob
12:39really yeah yeah can we just go just have a quick look see what we're up against yeah yeah get the door
12:49open and get a bit of this stuff cleared a call from Derek you know I've got a little job for you if
12:55you wouldn't mind helping so of course but you didn't really think it was going to be as big a
13:00job as this be careful Pete mind them rats don't damage the roof exactly and not a good sign that
13:07bumper is it I think we can safely say that's that it the initial problem isn't the Aston Martin
13:14do you want this saw Brian yeah we'll have that for Ian mate yeah there's a TR7 blocking the exit to
13:19the road the Triumph nothing can be done for that one it was just acting as a bodyguard for the Aston
13:26Martin because someone knew the Aston was there they might have wanted to steal it but it would have
13:31been a real challenge to move that out the way and get the Aston out the prize has got to be the car at
13:37the front doesn't it but so what do we can get this one out we don't know how bad that that prize is we
13:43have had worse get a bit of tea cut on that should be all right I'll drag that out and then get it out
13:51and see what we're going to do with it really but I don't think it's just scrap yeah go for it there
13:56she goes she's away now good job we've got a few mates in it yeah it's quite an emotional day
14:02really things about what's happened over the last 18 months my brother being in a nursing home
14:07now it's good to see something's happening about it at last and thanks to Derek and the team for
14:13helping out yeah go on mate give it a try doing a good job at the moment ah she's going excellent
14:22there she goes perfect let's hope the Aston comes out as easy as that one oh be careful with this one
14:37it's like a death trap fuck it's been there a while yeah it's everywhere how's it got so many well it's just bizarre isn't it really
14:52yeah Paul and Charlie are meeting Mick the farmer to collect his well-worked brace of tractors
14:59hey up Mick how are you not bad at all thanks to you yeah I'm all right yeah I like that the angle of
15:09that car oh Gareth stuck up yeah how's things yeah yeah those the two these are you there yeah yeah right
15:17with the tractors with the tractors having no batteries they need a tow to make a rolling start
15:22oh no that's your clutch yeah yeah you won't need brace because it won't work anyway do they
15:35go on where do we want to be you want to be in that gear and that's your throttle yeah yeah yeah
15:40yeah I want to get going Charles give it a few more revs all right yeah I'd stand back John
15:46okay yeah yeah it's not power steering
15:50perfect
15:55you want this backing up to that other one yeah please yeah
16:00that's there now we're farming
16:05yeah I'm glad Charlie came otherwise I might have to be on one of them
16:12what will it weigh that
16:15how far up you're not getting nervous are you I know you're all right you're still going uphill
16:30yeah yeah is that a bit of exhaust is it hot it's a bit yeah I slide it this way
16:38ah yeah it's still quite hot it's only an exhaust now you know why your dad brought you along
16:44oh yeah I get all the good jobs I get to go farming John to be honest he loves it though doesn't he you know
16:50I've been there done it all haven't I but Charlie it's great isn't it playing about with tractors
16:56what more could you want I thought that was going then all right Charlie yeah yeah lovely
17:06What must the neighbours think?
17:20Whoa!
17:23Yeah, what a machine, Mick.
17:25If the engine gets running right, she goes like somewhere she was.
17:28These tractors have seen better days.
17:31They're as old as the hills.
17:33Let's be fair, both of these tractors are older than me, aren't they?
17:35They might be older than you, John, maybe.
17:38I think they are. Let's go, yes, they are.
17:43And so, as such, they have every right to have a little bit of tin worm in them, don't they?
17:47But you'd repair them. You know, the tractor boys would repair them, no problem.
17:51I'll put a £7.58 reserve on them each. I don't want to go less than scrap, lad.
17:56No, no, no, no, quite right.
17:58Right, well, I think we're all right, aren't we, Charlie?
18:00I think so.
18:01Well, roll on. Good to see you again. No problem.
18:04No problem.
18:16Well, if we can get that other, that near-side front up, it'd be great, but if we can't, don't worry.
18:20Dashboard's nice. Steeringboard's nice.
18:23Yeah, that's exactly as it should be, grey like that. They're all grey.
18:28But look at all this chrome that wants to do it. Look at the work involved just in stripping them seats out and having it all done.
18:34Days and days and days and days. You can see where the money goes, can't you? You know, let alone the big job on the bodywork. Massive amount of work.
18:41So, you know, when you hear people say, you know, I'm spending £300,000 on it, you go, oh, heavens.
18:47But if you start thinking about it and analysing it, you can actually see where it's going. A lot of work.
18:54But you're then going to wind up with a very nice car and a car to the standard that you want it.
18:58Pulling the DB4 out is complicated by an inspection pit under the vehicle.
19:05Yeah, don't fall down that pit. Oh, perfect. Going to steer it, mate. Give it a bit. Yeah, lovely.
19:12Once we clear that pit, we'll be a lot safer, won't we? Right hand down, mate.
19:17How are we getting on? Easier than we thought?
19:19Only because a lot of us here, it's been a bit of a chew on me own, wouldn't it, really, eh?
19:24These lads, massive help, innit? And the only bit of kit for dragging it, job's a minter, innit? No trouble at all.
19:34There's a skeleton in there.
19:39Go on, mate, put a bit of paint on.
19:41It's unbelievable that just three weeks ago, I hadn't heard of Derek or his business up north. I'm not quite sure where it comes from now, but...
19:56Oh, perfect. Good. Well done, lad.
19:58And I was wondering what to do. I had this terrible predicament. What can I do with this car?
20:02Just got a watch now. It don't run away.
20:04And three weeks later, empty garage and the car's been shipped. Fantastic.
20:09Big, big thank you for Derek and his team.
20:13And what I said to John, right from the beginning, is let's not guide it, let's do a submit the best bid.
20:20So the best thing to do is let them all just make their own mind up.
20:24Personally, I think it's going to do thick end of underground.
20:28Really interesting. It's going to be one of the most interesting jobs that we've done, I think.
20:32Yeah, I think it wants a bit of beating, to be honest. I think it's tremendous.
20:35It's been a momentous day for John, too. But there may be further adventures to come.
20:41Some bits and pieces here. Well done, John. Thank you.
20:45I'll keep you informed, obviously, all the way.
20:47Yeah, where did you come from?
20:49Pickering. Pickering?
20:51Yeah, Pickering. North Yorkshire Pickering.
20:54Near Scarborough. Oh, OK.
20:56Between Scarborough and York.
20:57I know Scarborough. Well, I don't know. I've never been there.
20:58Have you not?
20:59I've never been further north than Watford.
21:02I went to Leicester, but it's only because I must have turned off at Northampton.
21:04Did you?
21:06As long as you're happy.
21:07Yes, very happy, yeah.
21:09Lovely to see you, John.
21:11Thanks ever so much, mate.
21:12You're going to look after yourself. Be careful, won't you?
21:13Yeah, yeah.
21:18Well, that's the end of an year, eh?
21:20It is, yes.
21:22Yes.
21:24Off it goes.
21:26The past is new.
21:43Big tractor, little tractor.
21:46Mixed tractors are back at base.
21:49Paul and Charlie aren't risking a jump start.
21:52Are you all right?
21:53Oh, yeah.
21:54Oh, she's keen.
21:55Oh, look at that.
21:57What a beast.
21:59She's an evil thing, isn't it?
22:01Have you got her?
22:02Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm all right.
22:03Do you want me to go a bit slower?
22:04She's like a steam engine.
22:06How many revolutions on that wheel, look?
22:09We're down to steel on the top half.
22:13Oh, she's lovely, isn't she?
22:15The question is, can I get it round?
22:18Because I can't go any slower.
22:20Is that slippy, that?
22:21Hang on.
22:23There's something about this old tractor.
22:24I quite like it.
22:26I don't know why, because it's just an old animal, isn't it, really?
22:30There's something about it.
22:31There is.
22:32And I don't know what, because it's horrible, but...
22:35Anyway, we've got to get the other one.
22:36Look what it is.
22:37So if you sort of offset that against a bit of commission and what have you, it's quite
22:49a profitable day, I would have to say.
22:52You can live on that for a while.
22:54Aston Martins of all shapes, sizes and conditions come through the auctions.
23:01There's a load of stuff on that that'll go on that.
23:04The plate didn't go with it, innit?
23:05He'll definitely make one out too, no question about it.
23:08I bet a year I'll have them done.
23:10You've got to drive this sort of thing before you die, haven't you?
23:13So he's going to again.
23:14Yeah, nice, innit?
23:15If you can't afford the Aston Martins, you can afford this one, can't you?
23:21We're not all on cameraman wages, you see, so we have to think about alternatives.
23:32There are a few basic rules at this top end of the classic car market that actually make it a bit easier to figure out.
23:39This car is a standard 1960 Series 2 DB4.
23:45But if after restoration it looked like this, get prepared to fork out between £300 to £500,000.
23:53If it was one of these, a DB4 drop head, like the one the Mafia threw over a cliff in the Italian job, double that price.
24:02Expect to pay three quarters of a million, and upwards.
24:05And if it was one of these, a DB4 GT that looks like the standard car but goes a bit faster, get ready to double that price again.
24:15One of these will cost you £2 million.
24:18And finally, here we have the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato.
24:24The plan was to make £25, but they stopped at £19.
24:28£10 million might get you somewhere near the purchase price.
24:32Or better still, find one in a barn.
24:36The first thing is, it's an Aston Martin, isn't it?
24:43And Aston Martin just have this pull, don't they?
24:46Dave's giving the derelict DB4 the once-over.
24:49It's a pretty car. It's a lovely shape, isn't it?
24:53Dad's obviously put that up there for a reason, so no-one can see what it is from the drive down there.
24:57Because the last thing you want is bits and pieces going missing.
25:00But it's a very elegant looking car, isn't it?
25:02Yeah.
25:04It wants a reasonable amount of work.
25:07The first thing I spotted, obviously when you open that door, is the gear stick.
25:11Which means it's manual.
25:13Which means a massive tick, I would suggest.
25:16Yeah.
25:17A massive tick.
25:19Oh.
25:21Well, this has got an engine.
25:22It looks to me like that's been in there more than a couple of weeks.
25:27Looks like it's been in there from day one.
25:30Oh, boy, it wants some work though, doesn't it?
25:33It's all doable, isn't it?
25:34It's a massive Meccano set.
25:35It's just...
25:37You just need a lot of money, Phil.
25:40You just need a lot of money and a lot of passion and a lot of enthusiasm.
25:45Derek thought the car could fetch a hundred grand.
25:48But there's a family split when it comes to valuation.
25:51I think we're going to witness late 30s, early 40s.
25:56And I think someone with a load of money will look at that and think,
25:59I'm going to do that for me.
26:00You know, I'm going to spend £200,000 on that, making it mine.
26:05And what a fantastic position to be in if you can take that journey.
26:10Yeah, it'd be interesting.
26:11But that's the figures I think. Late 30s, early 40s.
26:13You'll spend £150,000 on it, won't you?
26:16But that figure won't come into it, will it?
26:18Because you've got to put a price on the enjoyment that you're going to get.
26:22And how can you price that?
26:30I think they need a lot of reserve on these things.
26:45God, what a heap of corruption, aren't they?
26:48Dear, oh, lordy.
26:50Derek is waxing un-lyrically about Mick's brace of rusting tractors.
26:54Rubbish.
26:58I mean, this has been work to death, this thing, innit?
27:01Hydraulics haven't been used for years, look.
27:03Tyres are knackered, the paintwork's knackered, the wings are hanging off.
27:07Absolutely horrible.
27:09I mean, I'm sorry, but that's the way I see it.
27:12I think, well, should we call that an upgrade?
27:14I might use that when I sell it.
27:16Yeah.
27:17And this comes up, how are you selling it?
27:19Dead straight, right, nice original tractors, well worth restoration.
27:24Don't laugh, it's a fact.
27:27Because, basically, I'm telling the truth, aren't I?
27:30The fact that I think it's a load of rubbish is nothing to do with anybody else, is it?
27:33It's my personal opinion, you know, so...
27:35It don't matter, does it?
27:37And I did hear that they came in without batteries.
27:40Well, that's no surprise at all, because farmers won't buy batteries.
27:43That's the way they are, honestly, they really are.
27:45They'll skin a fart and split a penny.
27:47That's what they would do, the farmers.
27:48They're all the same.
27:49They're proud of it.
27:50They take pride in it.
27:52You know, the meanest farmer in the world can be called exactly that.
27:56The meanest farmer in the world.
27:58And his chest comes out and he's so proud that he's the meanest farmer in the world.
28:02Don't take offence at all.
28:03That's a massive praise to a farmer.
28:06Funny old boys, aren't they?
28:07I'll get on the right with them like that.
28:09I'm probably just as mean.
28:10Yeah.
28:141959 Nuffel.
28:15This tractor did one pull the other one on.
28:18They both run.
28:19And I've got a sneaking feeling of a typical farmer.
28:22He's kept the battery.
28:23Probably.
28:24He's kept the brakes.
28:25Yeah.
28:26He's kept the brakes.
28:27He's kept the brakes.
28:28Kept the battery.
28:29Only one good thing.
28:30He hasn't had the air out of the tyres, has he?
28:31No, he's left that.
28:32Yeah, that comes with you.
28:33But he's left the air in the tyres, but he's had the battery.
28:35To be fair, he's never had a battery on any tractor for the last 40 years.
28:41You've got to run them off all the time.
28:43Funny.
28:44500, 600, 600 pounds.
28:45You've got a steering wheel.
28:46What else do you want?
28:47What else do you want?
28:48Yeah.
28:49I'll laugh at the tyres.
28:50He's put some funny tyres on it.
28:51600 pounds.
28:52Typical farmer.
28:53Kept he going on a shoestreet for the last 45 years.
28:56He's proud to death.
28:57He's never spent 80 on them tractors.
28:59Provisional only, 600 pounds.
29:02Don't hold your breath.
29:03That'll make a nice old tractor, that.
29:05They both will.
29:06They're ever so genuine.
29:07The trouble is, like...
29:09He'd have probably done better keeping them in a stable, wasn't he?
29:12Rather than leaving them in a field.
29:13You know, you had to leave them in a field,
29:14because you had to have them on the hill.
29:17Fords of Major.
29:18There you are.
29:19Where are we going to be?
29:20Who's going to start me, then?
29:21400.
29:22400 pounds on the win.
29:23Thank you very much.
29:24You're 400, then.
29:25At 400 pounds, we'll submit it.
29:26But 400 pounds for the first, second, third and last time,
29:29we'll submit it.
29:30400 pounds.
29:32Hello.
29:33Paul Matthewsson down the auction.
29:34How are you?
29:35Good lad.
29:36Well done.
29:37I ring with news.
29:38It's not great news thus far, Mick.
29:39We've got 400 pound bid on the Major.
29:40I spoke to him.
29:41I've got him up to 600 pound.
29:42What do you reckon?
29:43Are you sure?
29:44I actually thought they would both do a bit better,
29:45if I'm being honest.
29:46But anyway, they haven't.
29:47So, yeah.
29:48Right.
29:49Pull the lever now, mate.
29:50See you, mate.
29:51Ta-ra.
29:52And so, with the lever pulled, Fordson Major and Minor are off to pastures new.
30:09It's auction time.
30:10The DB4 is, to me, one of the perfect Afton Mountains.
30:26And there's a buzz in the air.
30:29Bottomless pit, I would think.
30:31I don't suppose, you know, you'd get a Halifax mortgage on it, would you?
30:36Dave thinks it's a 40 grand car.
30:39You open this up and it's just, well, it's disgusting.
30:43That you can leave that and allow that to get into that condition.
30:48Derek has a bigger figure in mind.
30:51Now everybody thinks the GM has bond with Eames, don't they?
30:55That's not the way they've found it.
30:57It's out of life.
30:58It's a good old British car, isn't it?
31:00Yeah, they'll make a nice car one day.
31:0220, 30 years ago, I might have had a go, but not now.
31:05I want something that's all done, I can get in and drive.
31:09A lot of interest in it.
31:11Have I asked you if you've been to see it or not?
31:13You're not.
31:14You don't need to.
31:15That'll do then.
31:16Have you got a figure in mind, Richard?
31:17I have to tell you, we've got 79 registered bidders, so.
31:21Word's definitely out about the Aston Martin.
31:23And for the Matthewsons, it's all hands on deck.
31:26I think it could do 100 grand.
31:28We'd never surprise you if it'd done like 110, 120.
31:31But I think it'd definitely do 18.
31:33Right.
31:34Well, anyway, we are here.
31:35Lot 500 is about to commence.
31:39The 1960 Aston Martin DB4.
31:43Now, who's going to be interested in that?
31:45Let's be honest.
31:46Who's going to want to buy an Aston Martin that wants a lot of work on it?
31:49There'll be no interest at all.
31:50You wait and see, Mum.
31:51Struggle selling it, this one.
31:53Very, very rare, as we know.
31:55Unique opportunity.
31:56Fantastic project for somebody.
31:57I think it's going to surprise all of us.
31:5920,000 pounds.
32:0025.
32:0125,000.
32:0225,000 there.
32:0325,000 there.
32:0425,000.
32:0530,000.
32:0630,000.
32:0730,000.
32:0830,000.
32:0930,000.
32:10Where's 35?
32:1135 I've got.
32:1235,000 now.
32:1340,000.
32:1440,000.
32:15Do you want to do 45?
32:1645,000.
32:1745,000.
32:1845,000.
32:1945,000.
32:2045,000 now.
32:2150,000.
32:2250,000.
32:2350,000.
32:24And where's five?
32:2550,000 pounds.
32:2655,000 pounds.
32:28It is for nothing, actually.
32:30From what everyone's been saying.
32:3250,000 away then.
32:33You're asking 55.
32:34Do you want to bid?
32:3555 now on the internet.
32:3655,000.
32:3755,000.
32:38Where's 60?
32:39He's got 60.
32:40He's got 60.
32:4165.
32:4265 now, yeah.
32:4365.
32:4470, I've got.
32:46You don't want to bid at 70, no?
32:4870,000.
32:49We're at now 70,000.
32:5170,000.
32:5270,000.
32:53What a project.
32:54Cannot possibly lose money.
32:5570,000.
32:5670,000.
32:57Do you want to try one?
32:58Look at the reward.
32:5970,000.
33:0072,500.
33:0175.
33:0275.
33:0372 and a half.
33:0472 and a half.
33:0575,000.
33:06David.
33:07Here you go, 76.
33:08Derek, 80.
33:1080.
33:11No.
33:12Right.
33:1380.
33:1480,000.
33:15Yeah, 85.
33:1685.
33:17It must be good.
33:18Derek's getting off his stool.
33:1985,000.
33:2090.
33:21He's got 90.
33:2290,000.
33:2390,000 I have.
33:2490 on the bar.
33:25Well, you just don't know me, do you?
33:27You don't know.
33:28I appreciate you trying.
33:29You might as well just hang on and we'll see where we go,
33:30Mark.
33:31We at moment.
33:3295,000.
33:3395,000.
33:34He's got 100.
33:35100.
33:36100 on the phone.
33:37105.
33:38105.
33:39110 with Mark.
33:40110 back on the phone.
33:42110.
33:43115.
33:44115.
33:45115.
33:46Now do you want 20?
33:47115.
33:48Two guys there done their maths.
33:50115.
33:51You want 20?
33:52115,000.
33:53Stephen's buying.
33:54120.
33:55Oh.
33:56On the telephone.
33:57Mark's telephone.
33:58Five.
33:59One and a quarter.
34:00125.
34:01130, Derek.
34:02130.
34:03130, Derek.
34:04130.
34:05130.
34:06130.
34:07130.
34:08Are we all done?
34:10130.
34:11Got to talk with the family.
34:12135.
34:13135.
34:14135.
34:15140.
34:16On Mark's telephone.
34:18140.
34:19140.
34:20On Mark's telephone.
34:21140.
34:22Sorry, Derek.
34:23Try two and a half.
34:24Go on then.
34:25Yeah.
34:26If you want, we'll, yeah.
34:27I mean, got to be fair.
34:28We'll try.
34:29Yeah.
34:30We'll take two and a half.
34:31142.
34:325.
34:33Right.
34:34145.
34:35145.
34:36Yep.
34:37Well, these two lads know their cars, don't they?
34:38145.
34:39Going to be submitted.
34:40We'll have an answer virtually straight away.
34:42145.
34:43145.
34:44There we go.
34:45145.
34:46There we go.
34:47145.
34:48Thank you, Stephen, for your bidding.
34:50Best of luck.
34:52You can't find them.
34:53You know, they don't come up for sale.
34:55Even projects like this rarely come up for sale.
34:58So when they do, you've got to grab them.
35:00Simple as that.
35:01I can go and get a cup of tea now.
35:03It's just a lot of money, isn't it?
35:05It doesn't matter how fast you say it.
35:07It's a lot of money, isn't it?
35:08Yeah.
35:09Especially when you can't jump in it and go shopping tomorrow.
35:11Yeah.
35:12You know what I mean.
35:13Hello.
35:14Hello, John.
35:15Paul Mathewson.
35:16How are we?
35:17Good, thank you.
35:18I've just been watching on the telly.
35:20I thought you might have been.
35:22Well, what are we doing, mate?
35:23Can we sell it?
35:24Yes.
35:25Yeah.
35:26Done well, really, hasn't it?
35:27Let's be fair.
35:28Good man.
35:29Find me another one.
35:30Good man.
35:31Thanks, Paul.
35:32Cheers.
35:33All right.
35:34Let's go.
35:35Are you here to collect something?
35:36I am indeed, yes.
35:37Lot 500.
35:38Easy one to remember that.
35:39The man who's shelled out a cool 145k for the Aston Martin wastes no time before coming
35:52to pick up his valuable prize.
35:55Julian Crossley has bought his son, Edward, with him.
35:58Wow.
35:59It's certainly breathtaking, that's for sure.
36:03However, I can see daylight through the floor over there.
36:06And Derek's on hand to see the DB4 off the premises.
36:10There aren't many cars in that condition that stack up financially, but that actually
36:15near enough does.
36:16Yeah.
36:17Because if you put 400 grand in your pocket today and went out to try and find a DB4,
36:21you'd probably find one.
36:22But you might not find one as mint as that's going to look when it's done.
36:25Absolutely right.
36:26And the thing is, you go on the journey with it.
36:29And it's the journey of not just sending it down and writing a cheque.
36:33When you're pulling it apart, you get an attachment to it.
36:36You feel you're part of the car, you're part of that restoration.
36:39And if we get some, you know, Edward and some of his mates come along and help us with
36:44the cars.
36:45You know, get them involved, get them in enthusiasm, get the youngsters.
36:48If you restored it as standard and you do a fair bit of work yourself, you can still
36:53make it stack up.
36:55Yeah.
36:56Final task, to load this ultra-precious cargo onto a trailer and head back to the Midlands.
37:02I never thought I'd be loading a DB4 into our trailer.
37:07That's for sure.
37:08That's it.
37:09I can't wait to be part of it, get hands on, get stripping it.
37:13Yeah.
37:14I'm just really, really excited and keen to get going, to be honest.
37:17Right.
37:18Go on.
37:19Keep going.
37:20I used to look at DB4s in magazines and they're always so, so way off.
37:25It was another world.
37:27It is almost a dream come true.
37:28It really is, yeah.
37:29Yeah.
37:30For him to see it go from this stage to when it comes out of our garage brand new, it's
37:37going to be, for him, I think a very special and amazing moment.
37:44I've been looking for one for a while, but like, it was cheap.
37:51Yeah, I thought I'd go for it.
37:55Something a bit different.
37:57The battered old Fordson tractor is ready for collection.
38:01It's heading across the border to Lancashire with new owner, Jordan.
38:05I'm thinking he's going to feel the weight of it behind that motor.
38:09Blimey.
38:10All right?
38:11Yeah.
38:12Great tractor, that.
38:13I like that old girl.
38:14I don't know for why, because it's a big old thing, innit?
38:16But she's some machine, innit?
38:18What's the plan with it?
38:19Get it running and driving first.
38:20Yeah, yeah.
38:21Yeah.
38:22Shouldn't be too much.
38:23They're quite simple tractors.
38:24Exactly right.
38:25Yeah, yeah.
38:26There's something about that old girl.
38:27That's it.
38:28It was cheap for one of guys, for us.
38:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:31Yeah.
38:32Agreed, yeah.
38:33Was there any keys with it or anything?
38:34No.
38:35No.
38:36I just thought, yeah.
38:37No keys.
38:38No, mate.
38:39No, no.
38:40No keys.
38:41Yeah.
38:42But you can have whatever diesel's in it.
38:43Yeah.
38:52Get the trailer.
38:53We're in the trailer.
38:54Yeah.
38:56In the cold light of day, the uphill task facing new DB4 owner Julian Crossley and son Edward is now crystal clear.
39:07It's a lot better when it comes out of the garage and it's in some nice sunlight.
39:10This is the worst.
39:11Yeah.
39:12I mean, when you have a look into the engine bay, you can see just how bad it is.
39:16Definitely the rear of the car has been covered and unfortunately at the front, water has just been pouring in.
39:23Water's collected in the channel around the bonnet and it's rotted this channel out completely.
39:28I can almost get my entire fist in the chassis rail there.
39:31So this is all will need replacing.
39:34It's sort of just given up.
39:36I'm amazed how any of this lower suspension mount is still attached to the car and still bearing the weight of the engine and the vehicle.
39:46With 145 grand already in the game and many more thousands to be spent, the Crossleys plan to keep the work in house, only going to specialists when absolutely necessary.
39:58It's a great story.
39:59It's another Aston Martin that's been saved.
40:02Look where the thing was found.
40:03It's just fabulous to be part of that and some things in life you can't put a value on.
40:09When you look at what the car is, the history it's got, the price is justified.
40:18Inside, yeah, it's a bit of a mess.
40:22Everything's going to need to come out.
40:24The seats will certainly need re-trimming.
40:28Possibly they'll require the frames restoring.
40:32The dash, stripping all dash gauges, they will need a degree of refurbishment.
40:37It's nice it's got the old 8-track player in there and radio.
40:42So that might go back in.
40:44There's a lot of stuff in there.
40:46We've even got this rather nice pair of trousers.
40:49I don't think they'll be restorable.
40:53It's still got the reg.
40:55And these are quite nice because these are proper aluminium letters on this plate.
41:00So we'll probably restore this plate and put it back on the car.
41:05But how do you bring a car in this state back to life?
41:09For inspiration, they're taking it to the Practical Classics Restoration Show at the Birmingham NEC.
41:15It's getting a lot of attention.
41:17A lot of attention.
41:18I'm really surprised.
41:19Where they might also pick up some spare parts.
41:22We will need certainly some rear brake calipers.
41:26A prop shaft would be nice because that's missing as well.
41:29We actually haven't got any pedals in the car.
41:32Which is one of the things that everybody sort of missed.
41:35But then we go, hang on.
41:37No pedals.
41:38Where are they?
41:40If I took that one as a project, it would still be there when I died.
41:44Very true.
41:47Very true.
41:48Because it is well on its way to destruction.
41:51Understatement.
41:53The actual corrosion is very serious and probably more serious than it actually looks, you know.
41:59There's nothing left of the front end really.
42:00The inner panels and wings have rotted away.
42:03It's terrible to see really.
42:04It's tragic.
42:05It's tragic to see.
42:06We want to restore it as a DB4.
42:09And we know there's a whole load of pain and heartache in this.
42:13But we're going to be talking to specialists along the way.
42:17That's the right way to do it.
42:18Yeah.
42:19I agree.
42:20It's a colossal undertaking.
42:21This car will need every single thing touching.
42:25I think that's quite a project.
42:27That's the worst I've seen.
42:29Richard Furse from AstonMartin.com has seen it all before.
42:33To do this car, you are going to have to take the body off.
42:36You understand that?
42:37The whole lot.
42:38Yeah.
42:39Well, you want to be careful about taking the roof off.
42:42That was, when people say, that's the bit I'm concerned about.
42:46Yeah, you are going to have to literally piece that chassis back together.
42:51Well...
42:52It's a shocker.
42:53I'm not sure whether the engine's holding the chassis together or the chassis is holding the engine.
42:59But nothing's beyond saving.
43:01But it's a question of how much work you're prepared to do and undertake.
43:06It could take more than two years to restore this car.
43:09We want to try and use it to inspire the younger people to get involved.
43:14But don't worry.
43:15We'll let you know how they're getting on.
43:17Soon we can start swinging some spanners on it.
43:19The better.
43:20The better.
43:21Yeah.
43:22The better.
43:41The better.
43:47You
