00:00on sale this week lovely bit of kit this one the honda jzr and it's great fun it's been out in the
00:12open air like a motorcycle but you've still got that thrill it's actually magic the granada gxl
00:22three liter these cars shouldn't even be here because they were built really to last 10 15
00:27years then here we are 45 years later and it's still there looking lovely we're looking after
00:34a little bit of history here there's just fun original yellow mark one rally chopper 1970 i
00:43think we've got more choppers on site than anywhere else in the uk i would think at the moment it's a
00:48great bike to ride it really is it's actually better than some electric bikes i've run i could
00:54do another 20 miles the matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55 the joys of an auction
01:06most people will go to a sale with something in mind but come away with something different
01:11the fun is the chase we'll have a look and we'll advise you from there you just don't know what's
01:15on the end of the phone what you're going to find when you open them doors this is a family's love
01:20affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most people will buy a car because they
01:26can relate to it maybe a car that dad had you're selling dreams right here we go
01:39steady with uh with monday mornings like this we know why derek deliberately comes in late
01:45this is the one that the alarm keeps going off down it's a nightmare
01:53maybe we'll unplug that horn if you can find it that's an idea where's the horn we'll be buried
01:59there's a joke here isn't there how many people does it take to unplug a horn
02:03i had such a lovely relaxing weekend
02:16oh this is a joke madness we don't have this bother with our other cars do we jack you don't no
02:21how was your weekend yeah lovely until i got here how far you got to go far more probably
02:33but sutty has got worries of his own sort that later a bumper load of bikes is about to tip up
02:40we're gonna have a bet on that i can get 18 in this we're going for 18 are we how much are we betting
02:44a couple of quid oh no yeah i've got about 50p in my pocket right we'll go 50p then look what we've
02:53got today what you got for us lee we've got 18 wonderful rally choppers am i getting double vision
03:02i'm getting blurred vision classics courier lee costello has gathered in the well-tended flock
03:08from great yarmouth there's one for every member of staff in there isn't there new company transport
03:14i was gonna say yeah team bikes these have come from a chap who used to restore yes very very
03:20passionate yes this is all he did and sadly they're here because he passed away about a month ago
03:27but he said to his wife that he didn't want them to go anywhere else other than matthewson's to be sold
03:33that was one of his dying wishes he's really put a lot of time and effort into them he really has he's
03:38done a great job that's mark one it's the one with the yellow stripe this is the one yeah
03:45that's it i'm sure this is the one i had yeah so that's that's the one with the round gear stick
03:49then they changed it to the t-bar gear stick didn't they why the t stuck in third gear most of its life
03:55didn't ride it a lot to be honest no i had that little shopper bike thing shopper shopper not chopper
04:02shopper that was ace at white wall tires white wall tires now then could it have a basket on the front
04:08though no there's no basket no yeah come on i think you've lost your bet mate
04:14get your money off john john had a bet with this mind that it wouldn't all fit in i've lost this bet
04:20haven't i yeah i'm 50p down on the job it was a fiver wasn't it the mark ones are the desirable ones
04:28are the most sought after what sort of money do they command thousand to two thousand probably
04:34you might three's yeah two to three hundred quid maybe i'll have to road test solomon i think we'll
04:39see if they're all right
04:40over in leicestershire roger moss is saying goodbye to an old friend he's decided now that he's in his
04:5680s life needs to slow down a little that means selling his jzr a honda 500cc motorbike that's been
05:05converted using a kit into a 100 mile an hour speed demon it was invented by a yorkshire man
05:13who had been racing motorbikes like me so it was a very practical man and honda had just brought out
05:20a v-twin shaft drive motorcycle called the cx so he sketched it out and within a week had made the
05:28prototype i got fascinated with motorbikes because of the freedom and the excitement of riding motorcycles
05:43the jzr and it's great fun it's been out in the open air like a motorcycle but you still got that
05:51thrill it's actually magic and i'm heartbroken to see the back of it but i can't use it anyway
05:58and rather than have it torment me every time i looked at it i thought well i better sell it
06:07i used to put it on the back of the trailer on the back of a camper go to where the area i wanted
06:14like exmoor put the camper into a campsite offload the little car off the trailer and do all your
06:21touring around in the little car you're out in nature you could see everything beautifully and it
06:28used to create a lot of attention so it's great fun so you tend to make a lot of friends of course
06:35unusual things attract unusual people somebody's going to be lucky getting this because it's really
06:42fun we spend most of the time in life working but you've got to have some fun for god's sake because it
06:48wouldn't be worth living and this is real fun
07:04thank you squire commercials have always had a special place in the matthewson's hearts
07:09and tim ward from northampton has brought in a bit of a time capsule it's a ford cargo built in
07:19the 80s 1989 this one is
07:24they did have a bit of a habit of rotting away a bit quickly as for a lot of fords but this one was
07:29kept by fords and used as a test vehicle for training technicians to find tachograph faults so it
07:36basically sat in the workshop for 25 years it only came on the road in 2014 and it's only done 2 000
07:45miles since then from new so it's had a very easy life oh very yeah yeah yeah it's had a life of
07:51leisure basically it's got a larger normal engine in it for this size truck it's got a 10 litre 250
07:57cummings engine and an eaten gearbox i'm selling it basically because we need something that's a lot
08:03easier for us to get in and out of and more comfortable to drive so i think it's probably
08:10worth about 15 000 if it doesn't go for that i'll just take it home again simple as that i wouldn't
08:14let you go for any of this
08:33paul and charlie have arrived in leicestershire on their mission to collect the 1970s jzr
08:38right let's go find roger get ourselves tidied up a bit it's fair to say the jzr isn't paul's cup
08:47of tea no no no the whole concept's wrong in it you know two wheels lean go around corners four wheels
08:55stability three wheels let's be fair at least they're the right way around if you're going to have one
09:01have two at the front don't you so if you're going to have a three-wheeler it's the best way to have one
09:05this way around unless you want to have a laugh oh no it is no you're right it is absolutely it is
09:10yeah and there is loads of fun to be had in that car are they for me no not at all absolutely no flat
09:15no but it says well we're all different in it thankfully retired engineer roger can talk up the
09:23finer points of his machine and what what is this 500 it's a 500 honda it's a straightforward honda cx
09:30engine right with an extended prof shaft and the same wheel in the back with all the bevels so you
09:37get you've got all the spares correct ratios yes yes because the the frame of it isn't really much
09:45heavier than a motorbike no no cortina brakes oh yeah is that standard or is that what you've put on
09:52no that was what they would have been produced with yeah and now we're valuing it that's the next
09:57question i've no bloody idea you'll have a figure in mind no i'm oh i need some advice on that what
10:05we're thinking like a couple of grand or something yeah if we can do better in a couple of grand i'll
10:09be happy yes you know what we ain't got don't you
10:20third ramp because i was told it was on a trailer
10:22so we thought oh that's all right we're just going to put the whole thing on you see
10:29there you go look and just nice and steady up to there drink the 10 men there paul oh you what
10:37oh this is going to work lovely trailer will sit up there look that'll do i was just thinking i was
10:44going to put the ramps in the van out the way light so then they'll not be blowing off i'll give you the
10:50leaves if you want yeah that's very thoughtful of you i'm very sad to see it go but there again
10:58i'm nearly 84 and i'm very sad to see those 84 years go time waits for no man roger i've got to
11:07make the best of the rest of my life that i can but i still want to race my bike roger it's been a
11:16pleasure to meet you thank you very much a very nice car now we all know dave's partial to a ford or
11:34two and then a stunning car and today he's clapped eyes on a rather rare mark one granada very unusual
11:43car uh especially in black obviously people feel that black is a sort of a run-of-the-mill type
11:49color nowadays but it was special order back in the day so it does say up under the bonnet
11:56so if you open it it says black if that doesn't if that doesn't prove the fact that we don't plan
12:01anything yeah special vehicle orders there you go there you go we are talking very low numbers even i can
12:08hear it like three we're talking ish maybe four ish that alone makes it a super interesting car
12:14quite a prestigious car back in the day it was a little bit like the v8 rover p5 it was accountant
12:20bank manager that type of level of driver really you know it was a three liter granada was not your
12:27reps car it's the whole pecking order isn't it yes the whole yeah exactly so
12:32back in the day the granada was a mainstay of virtually every british tv cop show
12:42i watch this model of a granada every morning well i remember my boy legs and soldiers
12:48because obviously jack reagan uh was driven around in one
12:51it's really mind us next to me it's only the professionals come up ford who gave them the
13:05cars to use they got the marketing head screw yeah the ford marketing department were absolute geniuses
13:11weren't they
13:14part of the fondness and the love for them is the fact that we were surrounded by them
13:18these cars shouldn't even be here because they were built really to last 10 15 years
13:23then here we are 45 years later and it's still there looking lovely
13:30and 45 years plus later what would somebody potentially be looking to pay for something
13:36like this do you think probably four times than it was 45 years ago yeah crazy to many people that
13:44granada there is worth 20 000 pounds the more people can relate to something
13:52that dictates the value doesn't it but we have a connection with these cars and
13:56that's where it all comes in isn't it
14:05thousands of cars pass through the matthewson's hands every year
14:09but there's one era of vehicle that looks like it's reached the end of the road
14:15pre-war cars meaning pre-war second world war cars are poor at the moment not selling haven't
14:22sold for quite a while because it's a generational thing so the new generation of classic car buyers
14:28are ford capri men and ford escort men and so on and then we've got the edwardian era which we
14:34sort of say is 1920 back to pre-first world war they have been on the decline for many many years
14:42then you go back a bit further to 1904 that is the cutoff point the cars that are eligible for
14:49london at brighton run they are very very popular lots and lots of younger people driving so they've
14:55obviously been encouraged by their parents through their interests and collections of cars you're actually
14:59seeing quite a resurgence there the reason pre-1904 cars are so popular because they qualify for the
15:06london at brighton run in this country london at brighton event is the most prestigious event
15:11that you could possibly participate in that's what makes them so popular and being a bit of a veteran
15:17himself derek's been invited to take part in the rally i think it's a great honor to do it but it's also
15:24a great deal of responsibility as well because you don't want to go and wreck the old car i'm looking
15:29forward to do it in london at brighton run and i can imagine it will be a massive relief when you
15:33get there it's 6am and while the vehicles rest easy in pickering 250 miles further south
15:48in hyde park derek has joined the throng that are warming up for the annual london to brighton
15:55veteran car room i'm looking forward to getting out of town a bit less pressure on the open road a bit
16:02really you know which i'll feel a lot more comfortable then i think nice and dry everyone seems to be having
16:08a great time the gaffer's been invited to drive a panhar elavasa built in 1900 see you down there
16:24was looked after by stewart grey and john montgomery from the prestigious shuttleworth collection in bedfordshire
16:31i don't think we're in first are we might be in second and with daylight breaking they're off
16:39we'll be all right as long as we've got a cup of tea left yeah we'll be all right
16:47over 400 still roadworthy relics are taking on the 60 mile route down the a23
16:53it's the guy did a penny far then i'll tell you what they're not going to go all the way are they
16:58yeah oh they're mad aren't they after a good hour of grinding gears and very little in the way of
17:05suspension derek's on cloud nine it's just like what motoring used to be i mean you've never done
17:11long distance trips did you and uh and like this one's no no no different it's going well yeah you
17:17know you get to about 35 and you start getting a bit on you know you've got to hang on to it a
17:22little bit otherwise should be to be over but that's fine but it's old isn't it i mean it's 125
17:29year old or something so i mean bloody done well on it again here clearly and uh people watching and
17:35that the response of spectators been brilliant absolutely brilliant a lot of people that know us
17:41and we stopped at traffic lights and looked them up and said you just sold my escort for me
17:46the next job i think is truly back at the business end in yorkshire prospective bidders
17:55are out in force i've got a couple at the moment classic cars and i really need to sell them before
18:01i start because i'm running out of room and he's just a petrol and i know our first date
18:06we got in the car and he said um don't put your feet on the mats and i went where do you want me to
18:12put them through the sunrave i mean the whole purpose i said i'll do it as a hobby i'll buy them
18:16and sell them and he does a lot of buying but not quite so much selling problem is you get attached to
18:23them so you end up buying them but forgetting to sell them
18:32but not everyone's eyeing up the cars paul's taken by the work shy workhorse that's arrived from northampton
18:38and we haven't had any cargoes come through in this sort of condition forever because there isn't
18:46any as you always say built to work work to death every commercial out there is built for a job in
18:53it built for a purpose it's just a lovely truck in it 2 000 miles so she's a chassis cab engine and
18:59gearbox not running yet bits of bro bits of trim which you expect don't you know cargos were built to
19:05break headlining sagged a little bit look just a few little bits and pieces but as an example of
19:12wonderful lovely truck some would say it's a shame it's a tractor unit if it was a rigid of some sort
19:18it would arguably be more desirable to some i could see it doing 10 or 12 grand realistically i think it's
19:30worth 15 or 20. will it achieve 15 or 20 grand probably not because it's a tractor unit but it's
19:36worth it there's less money to lose out of this lorry than there is out of that one
19:46it's auction day and there's an absentee
19:49derek's not here what do you reckon to that it's blooming lovely it's nice and quiet no hassle
19:59do you mean that or do you miss him no no yeah we do miss him
20:03i've noticed a lot more ford left it's greeters cake to go through it
20:20the ford cargo we've got 10 000 here with me 10 000 10 5 11 000 online 11 5 12 000
20:30here we go look 13 13 5 go straight to work that lorry would it not yeah lovely 14 000 we are provisional
20:39we're nearly there 14 6 14 000 at 15 000 at 15 000 pounds 15 1 at 15 100 pounds on sale at 15 2
20:5215 3 15 300 for the third and last time thank you very much
20:57and the cargo is set to be shipped off to a new home in shropshire
21:11in the bike shed dave's nostalgia for all things two-wheeled is riding high
21:27ah they're fab aren't they i think we've got more choppers on site than anywhere else in the uk i would
21:32think at the moment a lot of them are the later ones which are still interesting but nothing like
21:40as interesting obviously as the early ones
21:481969 was quite a year man set foot on the moon and the movie easy rider roared into our cinemas
21:57with it a cultural icon was born the harley davidson chopper
22:04rally cycles designer alan oakley came up with a sketch for a pedal version
22:08and bond bug creator tom caron saw through the final design
22:14success was instant and the mark one chopper became a must-have for a whole generation of british
22:19teenagers who just wanted to look cool
22:24by 1972 an improved mark ii version was in the bike shops out selling all of the marks six times over
22:3150 years on and the chopper remains a cultural icon much loved and still very much desired
22:46still quite a nice early machine seems to think about it's got on here 1970 i think that's supposed
22:51to say on there you've got to look for things like the studs look with the obviously the rally symbol
22:56on still got the rib cables the rib cables are again that's an important feature so they're nice
23:02and genuine the rib cables the later ones are quite cheap the ones that were produced not that long back
23:07you know in comparison you know a few hundred quid as opposed to sometimes like two or three thousand
23:13bell now i had a yellow one my granddad built me a yellow one bless him and i think we bought a tatty
23:18one back in the day and then made it up into a nice bike we used to go down the bike shop in amptill
23:24and we'd buy something each week either a front wheel or a back wheel or a mudguard or whatever it might
23:28be and i remember as if it was yesterday it's still great they're lovely
23:44back on the veteran rally to brighton having made it halfway time for a tea break
23:50it's in the ford model c it's been in the family for over 40 odd years i've been part of the event
24:04for 16 years the uncle did it for 31 years and now peter's going to continue the venture this is this
24:12is the second year that i've done it i did it last year beautiful weather beautiful day and so forth
24:19and today it's been very mild and i'm a complete novice i'm just navigating it's an english car
24:25built in 1901 somewhere around four horsepower oh yes because we've been pushing pushing the car
24:32up already uh up little hills it's not a strong guy it's for a flat lance
24:39it's a charrette international charrette built in london and what sort of engine has it got a one
24:45cylinder which you have to put the oil on yourself and you uh you might get there
24:55yeah we are halfway so that's good looking forward to brighton
25:02one of the joys of vintage meltering then swinging it love it don't i absolutely
25:07and if you're not careful it'll come back and bite you it'll come back and break your thumb
25:14yeah i thought the swinging days were over
25:23the way to do it i'm the oldest swinger in town
25:30derek and the team from the shuttleworth collection have made good progress in their 125 year old
25:35panha elavasa the run out of london yes i really enjoyed it been great weather's been good i mean
25:42it's chilly obviously it's gonna be in it but it's dry that's the main thing looking forward to getting
25:46to brighton now
25:54jerry yo are you doing a bit of navigating no i don't know i can't read that map but he can
26:02so we're going to follow him and if he goes wrong we all go wrong so i reckon we'll probably be there
26:08the way we're going by about tuesday now the cards did the run first of all under richard chuckleworth in 1928
26:17so it's been doing it now for 88 88 yeah well over 80 years
26:2490 years you're accompanying him on that run you know he was there
26:32you gotta do this every year ain't you you gotta really ain't you you know if you don't do anything
26:37else during the year you gotta do this ain't you
26:42that throttle's sticking again no it's gone off now
26:44i don't know where the throttle's throttle's gone i've got no throttle
26:54so watch it turn her off mate
27:01slight technical hitch broke down
27:04right it's a bloody long walk that's what it is
27:06uh no all that's happened is the caps come off the mag that's all distributed cap load up lads i
27:13think we're away well done john with the repair done there's now fewer than 20 miles to go before
27:22they hit the bright lights of brighton
27:24the sun's shining in yorkshire time 31 and the sale is underway 160 pound bid and 70 at 170 and 80
27:38here with me with a special order ford going under the hammer it's all in the way well done gentlemen
27:44there we are the granada gxl three litre there she is a rare svo special vehicle
27:53order one of only three known to exist right it's on screen now just to see if there's any
28:00bins on it we've got 17 4 5 6 7 8 all the way up to 20 000 and 200 pounds will 20 200 pound then
28:09there we are then the granada a very very special car ladies and gentlemen at 20 400 pound then at
28:1620 600 tallton in somerset good afternoon i'll take 100 if it helps
28:2620 000 8 and 9 but 20 921 and then are we done not missing anyone off down to somerset well done well
28:39done bought yourself a lovely lovely car well done ladies and gents a ford enthusiast has snapped up
28:46the granada it'll soon be off to the west country
28:48i love them little one cylinder ones they're great aren't they they pull their heart out don't they
29:03it's the final leg of the rally to brighton and the old relic still rolling along
29:08it didn't come off again is it that i don't think so the throttle working again we might have just
29:18pulled in here a little bit we died again john no throttle that's out derrick got no throttle
29:28the throttle's working because you said it was running nicely yeah
29:33what a devil we're failing to proceed it's not brilliant is it no but it's a magneto yeah it's
29:45not a bloody electronic ignition i think it might well be that we vaporize the fuel and we can't
29:55it feels like fuel evaporation i think yeah you look how nice that sounds and that they just put along
30:10don't they they're just brilliant i mean i was totally anti one and two cylinders i'm not now
30:17on twenty miles down the road in brighton over 320 of the 360 cars that started have made it to the
30:26coast but for the veteran panhar it's not looking so good is there a plant there not really no right
30:36just plan it by you mate just it's just really like exhausting ideas to be perfectly truthful really
30:43but when you're in the sort of situation and position you're trying to film if somebody said
30:49shove a banana up the exhaust would give it a go problem is you've never never have a banana when
30:54you want one you've never got one when you want one absolutely yeah don't know in all
30:58terms and purposes you should go ain't gonna go is it so for this year at least it's the end of the road
31:05you expected to break down which is why you took all your tools and some spares with it
31:13if it didn't break down you were sort of almost disappointed it spelt the day but it didn't spoil
31:19it for me it made it to some extent and the banter that we had and the camaraderie as i say
31:25was just phenomenal it was just wonderful
31:27back in pickering dave's still finding it hard to escape the bike shed yeah look at them little
31:38beauties yeah aren't they lovely what is there not to like about a honda c90 i think i might sell the
31:46bm over there and get a honda c90 instead no i'm not selling me a bm i love me bm tell you what i want
31:51it for i want it to put in the back of the race truck i can't be putting that great big thing in the back
31:56so uh so i could wheel it in the back of the race truck you see and then if you want to pop downtown
32:01or wherever it might be or whatever but you can just open the doors pull out your little honda c90
32:07off you go down the shop yeah down the town down the seafront that's my dream yeah but like most
32:14things it's probably a bit of a pipe dream so now one day i should get the honda out the back of the

36:52with purpose-built trailer fantastic Morgan look-alike of course based on a
36:58Morgan the three-wheeler they're highly rated real fun car totally no purpose to
37:04it whatsoever totally impractical that's the word
37:06totally or 100% impractical but thank heavens we've got cars like this we've
37:12got guys out there that build and run in practical cars lovely oh wire wheels it's
37:18nice inside real basic and then ever so ever so basic dead basic seats that fly
37:25screens racing mirror brilliant bit of kit wouldn't be worth a fortune I've seen
37:33them advertised at three and a half four thousand quid so I would have thought two
37:37and a half three thousand quid might be its real value be interesting to see what it
37:41does on the day I think it'll do okay here we are the Honda JZR I love these I just absolutely love
37:50them oh here we go that little JZR Rogers I had a right good day when I picked this up

38:01what you like with it three thousand three thousand we're off three wheelers and me
38:06don't get on however I think there's so much fun I can see the fun and I can see
38:11the appeal and I hope it goes on to somebody else who is actually gonna use it and
38:16have a bit of fun with it because that's what it's for in it you know absolute
38:19bargain three thousand pound three two hook it up and tow it away three thousand two hundred all

38:55I'm pleasantly pleased with that for him it's not a show-winning car wants a bit of paint wants a bit
39:00of love but a load of fun load of fun in Surrey Nigel Atkins is doing his bit to preserve some
39:15biking nostalgia from a similar era
39:25he's not running too well at the moment waiting for a spare part a 1974 Honda CB 750 K4 and then there's
39:34this thousand CC Kawasaki ex-California highway patrol boat okay anything really that takes my fancy but
39:46mostly it's from 60s or 70s but especially 70s it's a real smart looking bike
39:55but it's the 1970 mark one chopper that makes Nigel feel 11 years old all over again I love it you've got
40:04the first second and third gears there rally mascot there also there's all authentic it's marked a bit
40:14but it's all solid it's all original it's the only thing that's new on this chopper I believe is the
40:22little gear lever which has been renewed but overall it's just it's fantastic for the year
40:30it's a great bike to ride it really is it's comfortable I'm going through the gears it's
40:38it's really nice no wonder they were popular in the day I could do another 20 miles I find very
40:47comfortable to ride even at this age it's actually better than some electric bikes I've been I still
40:55think I'm lucky to get hold of it it's not something that every child had in the day by any means
41:02something I would have really liked and my brothers would have liked it as well but we've got one now
41:08and it's going to stay in the family it's lovely and in Somerset John White is the proud new owner
41:26of the rare all-black Ford Granada mark one just like going back in time really bit of a time warp
41:39it's a car I've always wanted to buy it really relates back to years ago when my father had one
41:45or gosh that night on 50 years ago you know back when cars were real cars this has got the old three
41:53litre Essex engine good traditional engine even used to put this in a transit at one time lovely engine
42:01I think the fans been changed apart from that it's all pretty original so lovely to hear it I'd like to
42:11see the originality of the car that's the way it should be takes you back to your childhood really
42:17when my dad had his first one I think I was about 10 years old I remember as the family going out in
42:23it cars have come on a huge way since but it's just like to reminisce and you can actually still relate
42:29to it again back to my father's time when he was one of the original one very early Ford dealers and
42:35still keep in touch with the guys used to work for us then and used to work on them they know their
42:42way around these cars so well and we all get enjoyment out of reminiscing about a few times when we were
42:49selling them repairing them back 20 30 years ago pretty responsive still and it's just fun it you feel
42:57all the bumps in the road as against the new car but it's just nice and and nostalgic yeah I got as
43:08much enjoyment seeing it in the garage looking at it taking it up the road occasionally keeping it
43:13mobile and thinking well we're looking after a little bit of history here and you feel like
43:19you're a bit of a custodian for the future
43:49you
