00:00Jono, what's going up, man?
00:01Good to see those hands.
00:02Those hands look rested.
00:05They haven't been gnarled on anybody's face recently.
00:09Jonah Gajevich stopping here on Tobin and Leroy.
00:12How are you, man?
00:13How was your summer?
00:14It's great, man.
00:15Yeah, real nice.
00:16You know, just to have some downtime back home and, you know,
00:20get to spend all my days with my wife and kids.
00:23And, you know, nothing beats that time.
00:25How was the, like, did the celebration, did it live up to what you imagine
00:29it your whole hockey life?
00:31Yeah, definitely.
00:33No, it's the best thing ever, right?
00:36You know, we definitely enjoyed it.
00:38I think everyone enjoyed themselves.
00:40It seemed it.
00:41Yeah, you just have a lot of fun, man.
00:43You know, it's just, like, it's so much work to get to this point
00:47and then to be such a, you know, be part of such a fun group
00:50and such an amazing group.
00:52You know, when you have success like that, you've got to celebrate.
00:55Did everybody comment in whatever group chat you guys had
00:59on Alexander Barkoff's Instagram Live on the night you guys celebrated?
01:03Because that thing went crazy of him.
01:06It looked like Sam Reinhart wanted to go back partying,
01:09but for some reason he's on social media and he just has to opine
01:12on how much they've won and how proud he is.
01:14He was definitely, you know, a few celebratory beverages in.
01:18But I was just curious if anybody had seen this and been like,
01:20Marky, like, why didn't you just go back to the party?
01:22Dude, honestly, I haven't seen it.
01:24So I'm going to have to surf the web here when we're done.
01:27You're going to have to.
01:29You're an absolute menace, everybody.
01:30I mean, like, this is known.
01:32Where does that come from?
01:34I don't know, man.
01:35Like, you just, like, I don't know.
01:37You get on the ice and, you know, you got to have to be what you got
01:41to be out there to win games and be successful.
01:44So, you know, for me, it's just doing whatever I can do and just having fun
01:50while I'm doing it.
01:51And I think, you know, we were able to see that during the playoffs there
01:54was just, like, being in the moment and soaking it all in and just having fun
01:58while I'm doing it.
01:59Now, how long before it takes you when the season starts, something happens
02:05and you go, oh, that's it.
02:07I'm done.
02:07Like, you're back.
02:08You know, you're back.
02:09And somebody either does something to you or to a teammate, and you go, okay.
02:16Okay.
02:17This is it.
02:17Yeah, for sure.
02:18I mean, it could be the first shift.
02:21You know, who knows, right?
02:23Like, I think, you know, I'm a pretty calm guy, just chill dude, you know.
02:28But, you know, so over the summertime, you know, I'm not getting in any
02:32scuffles or nothing.
02:33So, I think by the time the first game comes, I'm all bottled up and, like,
02:37hey, if something happens, I'm ready to go.
02:39Well, yeah, we were just talking, too, about this with Mikula.
02:42And he's like, oh, yeah, yeah, we swear he's a calm guy.
02:43And I'm like, he looks like the most terrifying thing on ice.
02:46So, the switch you guys have to flip, like, are you finding Zen off the ice?
02:52Like, what do you do to relax?
02:54And then what is that mode like where it's like, boom, it flips?
02:58Man, I don't know.
02:59Yeah, it's just like, you know, for me, obviously, I got my twins at home.
03:03And so, as soon as I, the second I leave the rink, I'm just full dad mode and
03:07just having fun, laughing with them, making funny faces with them.
03:11And, you know, and then when I, you know, when I get to the rink, I mean,
03:14you know, I even see them during our warm-ups.
03:16Like, they'll be at the glass, and I'll be blowing them kisses.
03:19And then, you know, 20 minutes later, I'll be punching someone in the face.
03:22And it's just like, it's kind of a weird switch, right?
03:24He's like, daddy's at work right now, guys.
03:26Daddy's at work.
03:27Exactly.
03:28The guys who are enforcers like you and guys who got to get it, like,
03:32do you train fighting, like, at all?
03:34Like, is that just hockey fighting growing up doing that?
03:37Like, did you ever go to a boxing gym, an MMA gym, to kind of perfect some things?
03:41I remember talking to Sean Thornton about this.
03:43Like, he'd be like, he's out there.
03:45He's an American top team up the road.
03:46And so, did you ever feel that way?
03:48Or is it just hockey muscles?
03:49Like, that's how you always got down with that.
03:52Well, my brother, he's two years older than me.
03:56And, you know, him and I would always just hit the pads.
03:59You know, we had a punching bag in the basement, so we'd hit that.
04:02And then, you know, we worked on our skills there.
04:05And then we'd start sparring each other.
04:07And then, you know, it just kind of developed like that.
04:10And then I've taken, yeah, some boxing classes, MMA classes.
04:13Just stuff that I'm into like that, you know, it's just fun to, it's a fun exercise, right?
04:18So, just from doing that.
04:20And then, you know, my first year playing junior hockey, we had a guy, I think his name was Nathan Parrott,
04:27who was a, you know, pretty tough customer in the NHL back in the day.
04:30And I learned some stuff from him.
04:32And, you know, but honestly, for the most part, like, I think, you know, for me in the summertime,
04:37like, I'm just trying to get stronger.
04:38I'm trying to work on my game, trying to, you know, like I said, just develop as a hockey player.
04:44And, you know, the fighting stuff, it's fun and it happens and I'm willing to do it.
04:48But it just, you know, I just kind of.
04:51It has to be so demoral.
04:52I could just picture me just wailing and we're fighting and we're fighting and then it's over and you'd laugh.
04:59And Brian, that would, oh my, that would drive me crazy.
05:03So, when you do that, you just think I got him.
05:06Well, I think, I think that's like the point of it was just like, you know, that game, I was just being stupid.
05:12But, you know, like I said, I was just feeding, you know, the crowd was going crazy.
05:17I'm having fun.
05:18And it's just like, hey, like, you know, guys, you know, you can try to get under people's skin.
05:22Like, it ain't going to work.
05:24You know, I'm just going to laugh.
05:25Like, I'm going to have some fun with it.
05:26Like, you know, you're not going to like actually get me angry.
05:29Plus, all those guys are on your team.
05:30Yeah.
05:31All the guys that do that.
05:33Exactly.
05:33Are on your team.
05:34For sure.
05:34So, I had a good crew behind me, backing me up there, loving every second of it.
05:39And, you know, it's just, it's so fun to play here and then be part of this group.
05:43I don't know which one I love more.
05:44It was the face hour when you were trimming the, trimming in the box.
05:48My nails.
05:49Yeah.
05:50Well, man, like, I don't know.
05:52Like, I don't know.
05:53I feel like I trim my nails regularly.
05:55But, like, I think during that fight, like, my nail had, like, peeled back.
06:00Like, so it was, like, it just hurts.
06:01I was, like, just trying to, like, cut the nail off, like, as far as I could.
06:05But, kind of, the clip came out and it just looks like I'm, like, filing my nails.
06:09What does one do in a penalty box?
06:11Like, do you, does the mind wander?
06:13Do you look at it?
06:14Are you have to be focused on the game?
06:15Like, what are you, what are those minutes like?
06:17Damn, that's a good question, actually.
06:20I don't know.
06:21I feel like, you know, the first little bit of being in the box, especially after a fight,
06:25you're just trying to catch your breath.
06:26Like, you're pretty tired, typically, from throwing, you know, punches.
06:30And then, you know, after that, you're just kind of, you know, watching the game.
06:33But also, kind of looking around because people sitting around you, like, in the crowd try to,
06:39you know, interact with you and stuff.
06:40So, it's fun when you're in the box during home games because, you know, people are, like,
06:44cheering you on.
06:45But then, you know, when you're on the road, like, people are just giving it to you.
06:49And you're just like, ah, I got to sit here and take it for another couple minutes.
06:52Man, it's a wild.
06:53How was your day with the Cup this summer?
06:56It was great, man.
06:56Yeah, I got to take it back home to the city where I grew up in Whitby, Ontario.
07:01So, it was a lot of fun.
07:03It's just so cool to, you know, spend a day with the Cup one-on-one like that.
07:07And then get to share it with, you know, family and friends.
07:10So, you know, for me, I got to take it to my parents' place.
07:13And, you know, the rink where I grew up and, you know, just taking it to places like that,
07:18you know, where, you know, I spent all my childhood dreaming of being a hockey player
07:23and then dreaming of, you know, maybe one day lifting the Cup.
07:28I know what you did.
07:29You wanted to take the Cup in Canada and tell all the Canadian teams, see?
07:33When was the last time you saw this thing?
07:35Yeah, just rub some salt in the room.
07:36Oh, my goodness.
07:39Jody Gajewicz, we appreciate you, man.
07:40Thanks for spending time with us.
07:41Good luck this upcoming season.
07:43And you're a blast to watch on the ice.
07:45And we're looking forward to this year.
07:46Awesome.
07:47Thank you, guys.
07:47Appreciate it.
