What's going on in Arima North Secondary School? It's what the Opposition Leader would like the Education Minister to investigate, with four of the students losing their lives to gun violence in less than one year. Rynessa Cutting has more.
Transcript
00:00Four students of a Riemann North Secondary School have fallen victim to gun violence over the past year.
00:07And with the most recent violent incident between a student and a teacher,
00:12opposition leader Penelope Beckles is expressing concern.
00:16There's at least four footballers that were attached to that school have been murdered.
00:22So that it is a school definitely that should be classified as a school that is at risk.
00:28So I'm calling that the matters be addressed urgently.
00:32The Riemann MP is questioning why police were not placed at that school.
00:36She's also questioning what training officers are receiving.
00:40I asked the question what is the criteria they use to select schools,
00:44but more importantly that if you send officers there,
00:47you would think that those officers need to be specifically trained.
00:51I mean, we looked at what happened recently near the school in Central, for example,
00:54where the police officer was locked in a room and the key thrown away.
01:00And then even the other incident where two police officers were playing with a gun, right,
01:05and then one of them has been charged with manslaughter.
01:09So I'm just saying that in terms of issues of security and safety, it's not a simple matter.
01:14The opposition leader was speaking after reading to pupils of Malabar RC in partnership with NALIS for International Literacy Day.
01:23Several of the young children shared stories of undiscipline they have witnessed.
01:28When you talk about school violence, you don't wait until you get to secondary school.
01:32And, I mean, you notice that they gave me several instances of infants, right,
01:39getting involved in fights with bigger ones.
01:42They were able to give us several instances and, I mean, they were shocked, they were horrified.
01:48So the truth is that is the time.
01:51She's championing literacy as a tool to fight in discipline and violence.
01:56Literacy is about your ability, simple things, your ability to read, your ability to write,
02:00your ability to communicate, your ability to share when you have challenges.
02:04Because, I mean, in my legal profession, you realize a lot of times when you deal with matters relating to domestic violence,
02:10people just don't know how to communicate.
02:12The choices that you are likely to make would be better if you have the opportunities to benefit from education.
