Come 2027, the Secondary Entrance Assessment will feature a component from coursework in the academic year, done in the Continuous Assessments. The announcement came from Education Minister Dr. Michael Dowlath, who revealed that the primary school curriculum is set to undergo a significant change, as the government moves to train T&T's young minds in STEM education. Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:00STEM training is to be a feature of the primary school curriculum come the new academic year
00:05as the government moves to prepare TNT's youth for the future.
00:10I want to tell you that at the primary and secondary level,
00:15I'm reintroducing science and math with digital technology
00:20from standard 3 up in the primary school through what is called the continuous assessment.
00:25So from primary school, and it will go towards your SEA marks.
00:32And secondary school students are not to be left out.
00:36So I spoke to Professor Prakash also about,
00:41there's a subject in secondary school called technology education.
00:45Let's do a deep dive and include the robotics and AI and all the other technologies into that subject.
00:52So for incoming students, for those of you who are progressing,
00:57we want to make the curriculum more exciting.
01:00We want you to want to come to school and to learn.
01:03The minister was speaking at the first Tech Challenge Tournament 2026,
01:08the successor to the Lego League, hosted by NEHIRST.
01:12Since launching its robotic initiatives, NEHIRST has been on the ground,
01:17building our country's capacity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
01:27Through our robotics camps, workshops, competitions, teacher training, coding initiatives,
01:37STEM outreach, we've given thousands of students and educators
01:42the tools and confidence to thrive in a world shaped by technology.

01:58As I was walking around the room, I heard the stories from the coaches
02:04about the robot, the power cable didn't work, something else failed.
02:10I was looking at the competition, and one of the wheels from a robot
02:14that was in the middle of the competition actually snapped.
02:18It got snagged in a piece of tape.
02:22And those are the life skills that you are developing, not resilience.
02:27Technology will change.
02:30The people who continue to learn and adapt,
02:34those are the people who will continue to be the leaders
02:39and the minds that really shape this world.
02:42So today, your robot is not the achievement.
02:46You are.
