00:00Last weekend was easier to pass. Tonight is not going to be that easy.
00:04So also keep your eye on it. James was just telling us about it.
00:07You're going to have to probably get a little rough tonight.
00:09Make a block pass here or there because there aren't many opportunities to make a clean move.
00:15Like you like to say, there's going to be some elbow grease in the night.
00:18Yes, there we go.
00:20So it's a two-moto format. We'll combine the results of both to determine an overall winner
00:24and pay double points in the championship.
00:26This is 250 Moto1, 450. Bigger bikes will come into the gate after this.
00:31And in the middle of the night, we're the SMX Next World All-Stars,
00:36the young up-and-coming riders who will determine their championship right here.
00:40This is it, folks. Moto1 on the gate.
00:4330-second board about to go sideways and with it.
00:47The refs are up.
00:49Gates down.
00:53Deegan on the inside battling with Tom Vial.
00:56And Deegan able to secure the progressive hole shot.
00:59Joe Shimoda right there.
01:01Yeah, we talk about these guys, Chet and Hayden, and what is the difference?
01:05They perform in the times where it matters the most.
01:09We talked about how starts are so important, James, and look who's out front.
01:13Yeah, well, you heard him and you saw his face.
01:16That dude was locked in.
01:17But I will say this.
01:18The number 30 of Joe Shimoda has been working on his opening lap intensity.
01:22We saw him do that in pro motocross.
01:23He got better and better, although I see that number one sliding away.
01:26Joe Shimoda has been a lot better in early part of the races, Jason.
01:29And you've got some Kawasaki riders battling here.
01:33So, Seth Hamaker, who crossed the finish line second of the race last week at Charlotte,
01:37battling it out.
01:38It's that Master Pull, who came out of the wild card race.
01:41Bad gate pick on the 26th.
01:43What's third?
01:43That split start outside looking really good right now, faster.
01:48He gained some time, even though he wasn't able to make the pass.
01:51I do believe the outside line was faster in the switch lane.
01:54Yeah, we saw a lot of guys struggling with a lot of, you know, tires set up.
01:58And he was slipping and sliding.
01:59So, Ricky, as you said earlier, it's going to be hard to pass.
02:01And that was a key moment right there.
02:02He got close, but he wasn't able to get it.
02:04And now you're starting to see that gap separate.
02:06And the same thing up front, James, as Deegan has put two seconds into Shimoda
02:10and the rest of the field already.
02:13There's Master Pull working on Hamaker.
02:15Well, James, I can tell you, going back to our days,
02:17and maybe this will relate to our people tuned in here today,
02:21the SMX World Championship playoffs, man.
02:25When I could see you pulling away, it really worked on my mental psyche
02:29in a negative way because I knew you could go the distance.
02:32And when you're giving it your all and you can't hang on to your competitor,
02:37that can definitely play mind games.
02:40Well, good. It worked.
02:41Yeah, that's what I was trying to do.
02:42But sometimes I would end up pushing it too much.
02:44You'd be like, dude, that guy is laying on the ground over here.
02:47So pressure is on Shimoda to try to keep pace.
02:51Now it's 2.3 seconds.
02:52We've got the Tron Ares drone camera.
02:55Check that out. Tron Ares' new movie.
02:58October 10th exclusively in theaters
03:00as they run underneath the annex here at the Dome.
03:04Yeah, this is going to be new for these guys
03:05because normally in the Supercross, these guys run 15 minutes,
03:09you know, one race.
03:09They run a heat race in 15 minutes.
03:11They're going to have two 20-minute motos tonight.
03:13So I think condition is going to play in.
03:15So although Hayden Deegan has a 2.3-second lead,
03:18as this race goes on, this track will slow down
03:20and maybe we see Joe start closing that gap up along with all these other guys.
03:24I agree with you.
03:25But I feel, too, if Joe's able to maintain the gap,
03:28keep it within this 2- to 3-second range until about halfway,
03:32I think we'll see a battle to the end.
03:35If he's able to keep Hayden within sight here early on.
03:39No, I agree.
03:40And just so you know, Hayden Deegan is trying to execute his plan.
03:42It's like, you know, a football team.
03:44They're trying to get the score early.
03:45They want to get the ball and score.
03:47That's what Hayden Deegan is trying to do.
03:49Joe Shimoda is trying to keep this thing.
03:51So get in the second half, get in that fourth quarter,
03:53to have a shot at winning this.
03:54So both these guys are doing exactly what they want to do.
03:57As this race goes on, we're going to see who ends up winning.
04:00All right.
04:00So there is Deegan right now.
04:02It's nearly 3 seconds as he continues to pull away from Shimoda.
04:06There are the red number 30, Will.
04:08I'd be interested, Jason, to hear what Ricky and James have to say about Joe Shimoda
04:13and how he's different from perhaps some of the other riders in the 250 class
04:17as far as that mentality goes that you guys were just talking about.
04:21Because I've spoken to his team, and they talk a lot about keeping Joe in the moment
04:25and letting him just chip away at things, deal with this race, deal with Moto2,
04:30and then, you know, the championship comes later.
04:32I feel like he's a little bit different in that,
04:34and that might just keep him a bit closer to Hayden Deegan.
04:36Yeah, no, I agree.
04:37I mean, last weekend was a perfect example of him maybe rushing it.
04:40I mean, you think about him getting third.
04:43He could have won that race.
04:44He had the pace, and especially with all the confidence.
04:46So Honda's telling him exactly what I was saying.
04:49Dude, you just got to stay closed.
04:51And if I'm Yamaha, I'm telling Hayden Deegan, get away from him
04:54because we know the 30 is always there.
04:56A lot of riders intrigued.
04:57It's a little bit different type of track than we normally see
04:59when Monster Energy Supercross comes to town in St. Louis.
05:02Here are Shimoda's thoughts on the layout.
05:04There's actually only one rhythm that's really super fast,
05:09so I don't know how it's going to be.
05:12There's a lot of big doubles, and, yeah, I don't know.
05:16Actually, it's a tighter motocross track, I would say.
05:19So we'll see.
05:21We'll see.
05:21It's different.
05:24Well, they're trying to make it different.
05:25You see some of the different soil thrown down,
05:27that dark soil here as Masterpool continues the pursuit of Hamaker.
05:32We'll see how it races out.
05:33Well, it's certainly a lot faster pace than a regular Supercross race, for sure.
05:38And, of course, they don't have the whoops in this racetrack
05:41like they would have at a normal Supercross race.
05:43But I like this track.
05:45I think from a racer's standpoint, James, you and I were talking about this off-air,
05:50is if you're out front, it's a really fun track to ride.
05:53But if you're trying to make a move and trying to pass,
05:56I feel like it has a sense that it might race a little bit tight.
05:59No, I agree with you.
06:01And, again, we go back to Masterpool.
06:03He almost got around his teammate, but because he hasn't, now he's stuck behind him.
06:07But I think that feeling where the track still feels like a Supercross track
06:10and tight for them is because last weekend we were in a speedway, you know, a drag strip.
06:14It was wide open, over two-minute lap time.
06:18So now these guys naturally get back into Supercross dome.
06:21It's just going to feel tight, even though the track is a lot more spaced out
06:24than a normal Supercross track.
06:25I really like this camera angle right here overhead because you can see the different lines,
06:30contrasted lines that say maybe Masterpool and Hammacher are taking.
06:35Talked about that section, James, where the mulch is, where that real dark dirt is.
06:41It is tricky because it's soft and fluffy on top, and then that hard base is slick.
06:46Yeah, and they did a little bit of track work, so they mixed it in.
06:49So it's going to be the most together.
06:52It won't be as slippery right now, but as this day goes on,
06:54you're going to watch those shiny stuff.
06:55You're starting to see it right now.
06:57Pay attention to that.
06:58That mulch sand is going to get really slippery for these guys.
07:01So Hammacher here in third had the big lead at this point in the race last week
07:06and gave up that 11-second gap to dig in.
07:09Hear his thoughts on that.
07:10Absolutely, yeah, it was a bummer.
07:14I should have definitely had that win, I feel like.
07:16And also I lost five points with jumping on the red lights.
07:20So, yeah, five points in this championship is a ton.
07:23And I'll use that motivation for this weekend, but definitely not pumped or happy.
07:27And we've got a new, fresh start tomorrow, and that's all I'm kind of looking forward to.
07:34And, like I said, using that motivation for tomorrow and trying to get that win.
07:38But I kind of agree with him there, like having a chance to win because he was riding so well.
07:46And then, but not to take anything away from Hayden.
07:49I mean, Hayden really chewed into that lead that had.
07:51I wasn't anticipating that.
07:53But I feel like Hammacher still has a legit shot to run up front here in battle with Hayden and Joe.
08:00I mean, he's not far off Joe right now.
08:03Going to need a mistake to get back in there.
08:05And then a little bit further back, you've got Masterpol and Bial still in the fight, JT.
08:10Yeah, you see Tom Bial coming into the screen there.
08:13And in this week's edition of Scoop Tire Journal, Tom Bial's the only rider that decided to go with the Scoop Tire.
08:19Although it should be noted, Hayden Deegan and his team and his father were in heavy discussions all the way up until the parade lap about whether to switch to that Scoop Tire or not.
08:30I believe that Hayden actually wanted to go to it.
08:33They ended up not.
08:34Hayden made the most of it, got the whole shot anyway.
08:37Well, I've spent a lot of time on the track today for both the 250 and 450 seat of practice, both qualifying sessions, James.
08:45And because the sand is so minimal, and then you talk about this hard base right here in this exact section where Tom is, there's no shot.
08:53I'm going paddle tire because there's just so much other parts of the track where you're going to need, you know, a regular tire and not a Scoop Tire.
09:03Got a battle here between Davies and Thrasher, the teammates here, seventh and eighth, James.
09:07No, I agree with you, Ricky.
09:08And I think at this point, you've got to, if you're the other guys outside Hayden, you've got to change.
09:13You've got to try something.
09:14So, you know, look, we know what the paddle tire does.
09:17We know what the Scoop, all of them do.
09:18I would rather agree with you, like, look, I need that thing working so I can at least push it around some of these slippery spots, not only just worry about the sand.
09:26And, you know, at this point, you've just got to get it done because right now, Hayden's getting it done out front almost eight seconds.
09:32Yeah, I mean, he's putting on a riding clinic a lot like you used to us back in the day.
09:37And it's just unbelievable.
09:40Something else, yeah.
09:41But, again, it's no surprise.
09:43It's just this is what great champions do in times like this.
09:46They know, James, you talked about it, double points, a lot more on the line here this weekend.
09:51And if he's able to win this race and then win the next moto and get that overall, he's going to have a little bit of breathing room next week going to Vegas.
10:00Watching Davies battling it out with Thrasher.
10:03Oh, and a battle right behind.
10:04Max Anstey getting in there with an 18 of Jordan Smith.
10:07It's a little early to send him into the popcorn seat, but he might get him some popcorn in a minute.
10:13Yeah, it's good to see Max back.
10:15He just came back from an injury.
10:17And this guy was, we thought he was going to have an opportunity to win that Supercross championship.
10:21And then obviously got hurt.
10:23So, good to see him back along with his teammate right at a position in front of Cole Davies.
10:27Another guy coming back from an injury.
10:29So, top ten for all of them.
10:30Good to see.
10:31But Thrasher actually made the move on Davies.
10:33Sorry there, RC.
10:34As Anstey puts the pressure on Smith.
10:36Thrasher, one of the few riders to make all the races this year.
10:39And it started to pay off for the points as Smith and Anstey still battle.
10:46I really love this racetrack.
10:48I mean, again, when I say I love it, I love the dirt.
10:51This dirt is, like, perfect.
10:52If you could think of what a perfect mixture of cake batter is, this is this racetrack right here.
10:57It has perfect consistency.
10:59It's not too hard, not too soft.
11:01And this, in history, everyone has loved this place because of that.
11:04I'm telling you, Thrasher is on the gas here.
11:07He obviously likes this dirt, RC.
11:09He has caught and passed Davies and now going after Levi Kitchen.
11:13Well, he was fast.
11:14Remember, in qualifying practice earlier today.
11:17The first session, at least.
11:18And this is one of those guys, I mean, he's always showed us great hope.
11:22He's won some showdowns, I believe.
11:25Yeah.
11:25Triple crown as well.
11:26And the guy has some serious speed.
11:29And he's...
11:30Oh, Deegan!
11:31Did Deegan make a mistake?
11:32But slow getting out of that corner.
11:33Maybe he went down.
11:34We'll see where the gap is between here and Shimoda.
11:36He did fall.
11:37Luckily, he had built up that nine-second lead.
11:39And Shimoda is still not in the shot.
11:42Yeah, this race could have been put away.
11:44I think Joe probably was looking towards that second moto.
11:46But from the looks of it, I bet, hey, Deegan came in at a little high and missed that run.
11:51Probably just lost the front end and tipped over.
11:52I don't think he stalled the motorcycle because he still almost passed four seconds.
11:56But that's going to give that hope to Joe Shimoda.
11:59And we know how strong he is at the end of the race.
12:01Yeah, that's exactly right, James.
12:03Sometimes you just crack that door a little bit.
12:06What happens here?
12:07Most of these guys are going to the outside here all day long.
12:10Oh, yeah, yeah.
12:12You saw that front end get over that run.
12:15And, you know, at this point, Hayden had this race control.
12:17But, again, he was able to get up, really heads up, keeping that bike running.
12:22Still has a lead.
12:23But now the heart rate is going to shoot up, Ricky, and he's got to calm down.
12:26Well, that's right.
12:27And the thing is, now he's probably going to try to have to sprint to build that gap again that he had.
12:32And it's going to be tough to do.
12:33But that's an easy mistake to make right there.
12:36Probably suspension unloaded as he started to accelerate through that rut.
12:40The front end got light and just carried over the rut.
12:44Let's see if Shimoda can continue now to move toward Deegan as the battle resumes between Kitchen,
12:50who dominated this race as a Monster Energy Supercross round a year ago.
12:54Swept the Triple Crown, but he did it with hole shots.
12:57Starts have not been as good for him this year.
12:59And now he's got more pressure from Thrasher.
13:01Yeah, yeah, Nate is coming.
13:04And you can tell by Levi's body language right now.
13:06He's kind of standing up a little bit.
13:08Looks like his chest protector, one side of his came loose.
13:11I don't know if he caught that or tipped over.
13:13But nonetheless, Nate Thrasher is coming up.
13:16And you've got Tom Vial right in front of him.
13:17So, as you mentioned, Jason, last time we were here, Levi dominated.
13:21As you said, I thought he would be strong.
13:22And he was strong earlier today, but he's got his hands full.
13:26Good qualifying, Will.
13:27Now, see how it's going for the 47.
13:29And he was full of confidence earlier, guys, when I spoke to him.
13:33He was thinking back to winning that Triple Crown.
13:35And he said, oh, yeah, that's very much in my head.
13:37And he's like, I think I can do super well here tonight.
13:39He talked about running up front.
13:41But interestingly enough, he also said to me, he's like, I think it's going to take a top three start to get this done.
13:47And as you said, that did not happen.
13:49How challenging is that for these guys when they're just not racing against the guys they're expecting to right up front?
13:54Oh, and almost over the bars there, Will, landing that sand wall.
13:59You see how they're jumping into the sand?
14:01If they go a split too far and they don't land perfectly in that rut, it's going to be danger.
14:08Yeah, and you just saw it.
14:09I mean, he landed and almost looked like he hit neutral.
14:11But what he did, that bike was spinning up, that tire was spinning up.
14:14He thought the bike would continue to go forward.
14:16It wouldn't.
14:17And almost did a little nose willy right there.
14:19Flipped over the front.
14:20But good save by Levi.
14:21Tom, y'all still right in front of him.
14:23Top five.
14:24I watch these guys' bike through this back section and the sand section.
14:28And you can see it really bouncing, exiting the corners.
14:31And I think the reason that is is because they have this supercross setting in it.
14:35And it's so stiff, it's not very compliant for the accelerating ruts or bumps coming out of the ruts.
14:41It's not fried.
14:42Yeah, and most people will want to be like, why don't they just soften it up?
14:46But they can't because of this rhythm section.
14:48They've got to keep it going.
14:49Oh, and he's keeping it going right up now on BL.
14:52Hey, folks, you can play SMX for cash.

15:08Here's an offer around the outside.
15:10Maybe fifth place for Kitchen, and he's got it.
15:13That was a nice pass.
15:14And you go back to that one lap ago, he almost fell over the front end.
15:17Now he comes back and makes the pass on Tom Vial.
15:19But a couple laps, he was worried about Nate Thrasher coming up behind him.
15:22But that just showed he went from the defense to the offense, and he started moving forward.
15:27I like these outside lines that Levi's running.
15:29He's keeping that momentum up.
15:30And as his track gets slippery, having that momentum, that non-stopping go is going to help him out.
15:35I like the 47, the way he's looking, Ricky.
15:38Yeah.
15:39Riding good, charging, made a good pass on Tom.
15:42Looks like Tom's sadly going the wrong direction here.
15:46He looks like he's pretty hesitant.
15:48I don't know if something's going on there, but definitely not riding the pace he was riding early on.
15:52Yeah, here comes Thrasher looking to make the move as well.
15:55We'll give you the Rocky Mountain ATV team update as Thrasher looks for a wheel on the inside and makes the move on Vial.
16:03It's honestly pretty similar to the way Vial's first moto went last time out at Charlotte.
16:08Ran around the podium early and then started drifting back.
16:11Team update is on Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki brought to you by RockyMountainATVMC.com.
16:16They got Hamaker third, Kitchen now moving up, and Masterpool, a solid ride in fourth.
16:22Adams 13th, Marchbanks, riding with a twisted knee that he injured last week.
16:26He's just trying to persevere for points.
16:28He is in 15th, but at least he's out on the track.
16:31Well, I'm surprised that Marchbanks is even out there.
16:34He took a gnarly hit last weekend.
16:36When I saw the presser come out that he was going to be competing this weekend, I was like, wow, that's super impressive.
16:42Yeah, I think he'd go with all these guys, but what's impressive, Jason, is this guy right here.
16:47And he started to pull back away, James, 5.7 seconds.
16:50Now, the good news is Marchbanks able to go with his sore knee, but we did have some bad news from qualifying.
16:55Austin Fortner was building such a great story.
16:58The oft-injured one-time prodigy made it to all the races this year, but dabbed his leg in qualifying today, hurt the knee.
17:06I don't know what the status is, but he is not racing tonight.
17:09I hope that he gets checked out and is okay, and more passes on VL as Davies goes right by.
17:16Yeah, as you mentioned, we've seen this happen last weekend, and I think there's something going on with Tom VL outside of just even with him.
17:23I don't know what's going on, believe in the bike or whatnot, but he's definitely not looking like the Supercross champion.
17:28Back-to-back Supercross champion it is, and you can tell when a rider starts looking around, he's wavering.
17:33Yeah, he is, and he doesn't look like he's tired to me.
17:36It just looks like he's something he's uncomfortable with.
17:39Yeah, he's not able to push, that's for sure, and I thought I noticed it, you know, when Levi was going to make a pass.
17:46I'm like, well, Levi is riding really well right now, but yeah, that's a lot of time he's lost in the last three laps, so hopefully everything is all right.
17:56It's nothing too crazy.
17:57So, again, so similar to the way it turned out last week in that first moto as well.
18:03He just said last week he was really not comfortable in the pro motocross section.
18:08His track is completely different than that.
18:10As you watch the 100 of Davies battling it out with Anstey right now, this is 7th and 8th.
18:15Yeah, you can see those guys starting to push it really close to those tough blocks right there because of the way this track is going.
18:21The corner's getting a little bit more blown out, and as the night goes on, it's going to get that shiny stuff.
18:26It's like it's a highlight.
18:28They're going to be struggling to stay on the racetrack.
18:30Man, I'd love to see Cole Davies get a good start in this second moto and at least be top three and see what he can do with a good start.
18:39Because I just go back to Supercross season earlier when he was showing us some big quad there.
18:44Quad from Anstey.
18:46I saw Justin Cooper do that in practice, and that was a big jump.
18:50Yeah, but look how much time he gained.
18:53But when you talk about how difficult this racetrack is to pass, he caught him, and then now he lost that time on there because he was so close, JT.
19:00Yeah, and James, I think it's going to be a situation where he's going to close that back down.
19:05And we forget about how good Max Anstey was to start off this 2025 campaign.
19:11And he was the odds-on favorite to win this championship a couple of rounds in.
19:15Unfortunately, injury takes him out of it, but he's had time to prepare.
19:19He's had time to get his confidence back.
19:21And, guys, I think he's one start away for fighting from the podium before we close this thing out in Las Vegas.
19:26Yeah, I agree.
19:27But at the same time, it's a hard position to be in where Max is or any guy coming from injury at the end of this playoff run
19:34because you're, like, built to come back and race these races.
19:37So you want to continue that build.
19:39You only got one more race after this.
19:40So the last thing you want to do is go out and push it too early, get hurt.
19:43Then you ruin your off-season.
19:45Then that affects you next year.
19:47So although he might, if he got his start, he'd want to push it, same time, he's got to be careful with that, Will.
19:52And also to add to that, James, this was not a regular recovery either.
19:57He lost an additional two months of what he thought he was going to be off the bike for
20:02because when they broke the leg, his leg, he did not have surgery.
20:06He was told by the doctors, by several doctors, he did not need it.
20:09And then a reassessment after pain while he was riding and just it not healing.
20:13He then had to go back in.
20:15So Max's frustration, and maybe it's working in his favor as he attacks the track hit,
20:19is because he just lost.
20:20I mean, two months is a lot of their season to lose.
20:22And he had to then reset and start again.
20:24Well, if he continues to put on these rides, James, you know what it does for your,
20:29the mental side of things.
20:31You start building that confidence.
20:33Like, last weekend, you're going to get a seventh.
20:35This weekend, you're going to get a fifth or a fourth.
20:37And then those turn into podiums and wins.
20:39And, yeah, going back to what JT said, I mean, he was so impressive in that 250 East division
20:46earlier on this year.
20:48And I certainly had him as a favorite.
20:50He didn't even look like he was trying.
20:52And he was class of the field.
20:54Yep, and it went down, I believe that was at Birmingham.
20:56There's Davies still holding him off.
20:58And Deegan, the gap really didn't change that much.
21:01It was about four seconds after he went down.
21:03And it's controllable, 5.3 right down over Shimoda.
21:07Yeah, we came on air, and I said there's moments of the season and moments of the race.
21:11And whether the moment's going to be for a guy like Joe Shimoda and maybe in the 450 class,
21:16whether they really believe that they could beat these guys, Jett Lawrence and Hayden Deegan.
21:20I'm impressed what this dude's doing because all day long, the lifetimes have been really close.
21:25I mean, at one point, we had the top 20 within two seconds.
21:28And that's rare on a Supergrass track.
21:30But the way Hayden's came out, his face told you everything you needed to know when we interviewed him.
21:35He was focused.
21:36He got the whole shot.
21:38He came out.
21:38He executed.
21:39He even went down and pulled away.
21:41This is a huge statement race for Hayden Deegan.
21:44It might be a title blow for Joe Shimoda if he can't recover and come back to his next race for all these guys.
21:50And we'll see.
21:51You know, we'll see how Joe is able to react.
21:53If he's not going to be phased mentally from this.
21:56And like you were talking at the top of the show and like as well for me, when I think about Hayden, it's like, yes, these guys do have an opportunity to beat him.
22:05And they have the speed at times.
22:06But overall, I mean, Hayden knows what's at stake.
22:09He knows it's double points.
22:10And he knows if he wants to put a seal, I just assume if he knows if he wants to put a seal on this championship, winning tonight is going to put him in a great spot to do.
22:20Last lap here for Deegan James.
22:22And he's got it under control.
22:23Yeah, no, he's got it under control.
22:24I mean, there's another motor, but we talked off camera, me and Ricky, and just to what you were saying, sometimes the most important race to win a title is not the last one.
22:31It's the one before to get you just in case something happens.
22:35So I think Hayden has been extra focused tonight because he knows he gets these race wins.
22:40The points are going to be one thing.
22:41But again, just having that little bit of buffer is so important for those guys.
22:45And this gap that he has, 5.7 seconds, if you hold it to the end, it actually would be the biggest margin he's had at the end of one of these playoff races,
22:51which is shocking because he has been dominant by any definition of the word in the playoffs.
22:57Won the title in 2023, won all but one Moto in 2024, and looking to win them all early in 2025 as well.
23:05Hayden Deegan wins Moto 1, St. Louis Playoff 2.
23:112025, here's Shimoda, got the good start, just simply couldn't keep Deegan in sight.
23:17And we'll have to settle for a second in Moto 1.
23:18They'll be back in a bit for the second race.
23:21As the 450 riders now getting ready on the line for their first race.
23:27And we'll go talk to Hayden Deegan on the podium when we return.
