00:01This is Project Runway.
00:10I want to be a fashion icon.
00:12At the level of Dior, Tom Ford, and Carl Legfield,
00:16I want to be a household name.
00:20But if I'm not having fun, I don't want to do it.
00:22How's that?
00:26I'm really drawn to the vintage feel,
00:29but I add in my elements to create
00:32a very sophisticated but edgy modern look.
00:39My name's Janine. I'm 27 years old,
00:41and I'm from Portland, Oregon.
00:43This is so exciting to be in New York.
00:48I've never been here,
00:49and I'm kind of dorking out about it a little bit.
00:52Oh, my God!
00:54Wow!
00:55I like things that are not specific
00:58to a time and not attached to any sort of, like, trend.
01:02But the show in Bryant Park...
01:04Oh, my God!
01:05The thought of that almost, like,
01:08obviously makes me want to cry.
01:10That would be the beginning of everything.
01:12It would change my life.
01:14Wow!
01:15Hi!
01:16Oh, my God!
01:17Hi, I'm Janine.
01:18I'm Janine.
01:19I'm Janine.
01:20I'm Janine.
01:21I'm Janine.
01:22I'm an American-trained physical therapist
01:24and an Italian-trained fashion designer.
01:27I work as a physical therapist from nine to five,
01:30so I know how body moves and functions.
01:33I'm always searching for the simplest cut
01:36to liberate the body movement.
01:38Hey!
01:39What's up there?
01:40Ben.
01:41Ben.
01:42How are you?
01:43It's the whole place?
01:44Yeah.
01:45You don't want that first one.
01:46We'll talk about it later.
01:48I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama.
01:51Honey!
01:53It is hell being black, gay in the ghetto.
01:57Hello!
01:58Hey!
01:59Wow, that's quite a suitcase.
02:00Honey, I brought Georgia with me.
02:02I'm Anthony.
02:03My ultimate goal is to be one of the gown designers
02:06for Miss USA and Miss Universe.
02:08I don't really care for Miss America,
02:10but I feel like if life has called me for such a time as now,
02:13then Anthony needs to rise to the occasion.
02:16Period.
02:19I'm Jay.
02:20I'm 31, and I'm from San Francisco.
02:23My design aesthetic is very eclectic.
02:26I like things to be dramatic.
02:28I don't want to make a lot of money.
02:29I don't want to be a millionaire.
02:30It's about doing what I love.
02:32Which bed is broken?
02:33The first one.
02:34Jay, that's your bed, so not so special.
02:36I'm the skinniest amongst the four of us,
02:38so I think I should be fine there.
02:41I'm 180.
02:42I'm 145.
02:43152.
02:45And I'm thirsty.
02:48Oh, hi!
02:50You're so good.
02:51You're on camera live.
02:52I had a complete different career before this,
02:54so the last few years have been my main starting point
02:57for fashion.
02:58I worked in advertising and went as far as I could with it.
03:02I got to the top position that I wanted,
03:04and then I was like, okay, more challenge.
03:06What's new?
03:07I have my own small design business
03:09where I do custom work for private clients.
03:12I'm totally a type A personality.
03:14I like to be at the top constantly.
03:17Oh!
03:18It's amazing!
03:19Oh, my God!
03:20Hi!
03:21My name's Anna.
03:22Oh, wow.
03:23I can't believe it.
03:24I'm kind of an animal when it comes to competition.
03:26I'll do anything to win.
03:28I recently have started to try taking designs
03:30that may be a pretty dress or a pretty cocktail coat
03:32and hand painting on them, splatter painting on them.
03:35I'm trying to discover the place where gritty meets pretty.
03:39Hey!
03:40Jesse.
03:41I'm Jesse.
03:42I'm Jesse Lenore.
03:43I'm 24 years old from Orlando, Florida.
03:44I actually was an actor.
03:46I work at Disney World.
03:47I worked there as a pirate,
03:49sort of the most famous pirate you could probably think of.
03:52But along the way, learning to be an actor,
03:54I learned how to sew,
03:55and I then expanded upon that
03:57and taught myself how to design.
03:59Oh, I'm self-taught, too.
04:00You know, we got to stick together.
04:01Yeah, exactly.
04:02I took a little detour from fashion design,
04:05and for the last 12 to 13 years,
04:07I've been a costume designer,
04:09mostly for television and film.
04:11I actually think that my experience
04:14has made me see fashion from different angles.
04:17I feel so ready to show the world what I can do.
04:20How are you?
04:21Good, how are you?
04:22I'm Maya.
04:23I like fashion that takes risks.
04:25When I was in high school,
04:26I was really inspired by punk rock and rock and roll.
04:29I do collect vinyl.
04:30I love music.
04:32Music and fashion go hand in hand.
04:34I like your haircut.
04:35High five for bangs.
04:36High five.
04:37I didn't know my little sister was going to be on the show.
04:39Really?
04:40I'm Maya.
04:41Nice to meet you.
04:42Hi.
04:43Christiane.
04:44So nice.
04:45I know.
04:46It smells good, too.
04:49My name's Jesus.
04:50I'm 21 years old.
04:51I am young, but I'm ready for it
04:53because I am very confident,
04:54and I feel like I'm a very talented person.
04:56Hey!
04:57What's up?
04:58I think I have a really, really big sense of imagination
05:01that's guided me towards being a great designer.
05:03What's your specialty?
05:04Evening and couture.
05:05Cool.
05:06So you guys better watch out.
05:07Bring it on.
05:08Hey.
05:09Hi.
05:10My name is Emilio.
05:11What's your name?
05:12I'm Jonathan.
05:13Emilio.
05:14What's your name?
05:15I'm Jonathan.
05:16Emilio.
05:17Do you speak Spanish?
05:18Claro.
05:19We'll teach you Spanish.
05:24My name is Amy Sarabi.
05:25I'm 25 years old from Oakland, California.
05:28Hi.
05:29Hi.
05:30I think that my Iranian background
05:31has definitely affected my design aesthetic.
05:34The visual motifs and things are always around my house,
05:37but I really love innovation.
05:39I like being different.
05:41Hi.
05:42Dear designers, welcome to New York and to Project Runway.
05:45I look forward to meeting all of you,
05:47so please join Tim and me on the rooftop
05:50for a celebratory toast.
05:51La la fide.
05:52You're supposed to read that in German.
05:54Good on the written.
05:57In German.
05:58All of a sudden it's happening.
06:00Project Runway's starting.
06:02Hi everybody.
06:03Welcome to Project Runway.
06:05As you can see we have returned to our original New York home,
06:09New York home, The Atlas, Gotham's luxury apartment building here in Manhattan's Fashion
06:14District.
06:15And now I would like to introduce you to the one and only Tim Gunn.
06:20He's the Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne and he will be your mentor during your time
06:26here on Project Runway.
06:28Welcome designers.
06:30Never before have we had a group of designers who possess such a strong spirit of innovation,
06:34so many different creative points of view and who know how to create clothes that can
06:38navigate the real world.
06:40And we will see a lot of each other because we'll be together in the workroom at Parsons,
06:43the new school for design.
06:44It will be hard and you will have to work a lot.
06:48So before we get started, let's have a little champagne.
06:51And I'm a little pregnant so I'm going to have a little apple cider.
06:55Come on.
06:56Come forward everybody.
06:57Come forward, grab a glass.
06:59I'm Anthony.
07:00Anthony.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Chicago.
07:03Chicago.
07:04But originally from China.
07:05What's this down here?
07:06That's lower Manhattan into Brooklyn.
07:08And this is the crazy...
07:09That's the Empire State Building.
07:10That's the Empire State Building.
07:11Yeah.
07:12Oh my God.
07:13My name is Emilio Sosa.
07:14I am 43 years old and I am from New York City.
07:17See this used to be my town too.
07:19Yes, I'm representing.
07:20Yeah.
07:21I ended up working in costumes because I needed a job, but I'm still designing fashion.
07:25It just happens to fit the framework of the show that I'm working in.
07:29Oh!
07:30It's great to design beautiful showstoppers, but my goal is to have my clothing on people's
07:36back that I ride the subways with.
07:38And what's your style like?
07:39I went to school for comic book illustrations, so the idea of armor and all that kind of
07:46play.
07:47My style is not always like extremely feminine and pretty.
07:49I still have that kind of comic book sensibility.
07:52I like to see somebody evolve into another personality when they put something on a line.
07:56I use a lot of textures, a lot of layers, a lot of colors.
07:59I lived in the Ivory Coast for about 21 years.
08:03It's a place where color is 24-7.
08:06Making these women look beautiful.
08:08I have received an award for best of couture.
08:11I've had a few dresses worn on the red carpet very recently.
08:15I mean, I'm good.
08:19What about you?
08:20I would say that I sort of define myself as an artist and I'm working in the direction of fashion design.
08:25I just spent four years at the Rhode Island School of Design studying printmaking.
08:28It taught me to scrutinize my work and it taught me to have a really clear design process.
08:33I am so excited to get started.
08:35Would you all please gather around?
08:37I just want to start now.
08:39I want to start.
08:40Tomorrow morning you will meet me in Central Park and learn the details of your first challenge.
08:47Cheers!
08:49Project Runway!
08:50Cheers!
08:58So we arrive at Central Park and we see tons and tons of fabrics laying around.
09:10And I'm thinking to myself, Lord have mercy.
09:13Mood Fabrics has come out here and hanged their fabrics to dry.
09:16Good morning designers and welcome to Central Park.
09:18Good morning!
09:19Good morning!
09:20As you look around, you'll see that Mood Fabrics has generously donated hundreds of yards of textiles and myriad colors, textures and patterns.
09:28And as beautiful as the textiles are, they are missing something.
09:32And that something is you, your vision.
09:35For this first challenge, it's critically important that your look embody who you are as a designer.
09:40We get to design our own thing that represents us.
09:44When I say go, you will have three minutes to gather as much fabric as you can.
09:50And then I'm going to take you to the work room at Parsons.
09:52Oh, smack.
09:54Three minutes.
09:56Mad dash.
09:57Grab it.
09:58Ready, set, go!
10:05Tim says go and we are like fat people at an open buffet in Vegas.
10:09You can't stop anyone.
10:12I automatically thought, okay, go for the colors because I'm all about colors.
10:22Alright designers, time is up.
10:24I need you to gather around here.
10:26As you know in fashion, an editing eye is critically important and I'm giving you your first opportunity to edit.
10:34Out of all these fabrics that you've gathered, you were to select five.
10:38That's five to take back to the work room.
10:40Edit away.
10:41Oh no, I have to pick one to give up?
10:43No, I don't want to give anything up.
10:44What if I need that one?
10:45That's like, it's like your leg.
10:47You don't want to cut it off.
10:48Everybody, you have two minutes.
10:50Two minutes to finish editing.
10:51Oh my god, I like your fabric.
10:53I think I grabbed all the ugliest fabric among the group.
10:57Oh!
10:58No!
10:59I have no idea.
11:01No idea.
11:02We have less than a minute.
11:03One, two.
11:04These are ones that you're taking?
11:05Yeah.
11:06Okay, you need to unfurl it too because it has to go into your mood bag.
11:09It doesn't wrap.
11:10Designers, you have 30 seconds remaining.
11:12I don't know how to do this!
11:14You're just starting to fall.
11:15Go pink!
11:16Go pink!
11:17Go pink!
11:18Go pink!
11:19King!
11:20King!
11:21Oh.
11:24Sorry, designers.
11:25Let me take you to the work room.
11:26Follow me.
11:27The first challenge, if you don't take your vision and shove it in the judge's face right
11:32down their throat and say, this is who I am, I think you might be in trouble.
11:37Woo!
11:38Woo!
11:39Are we neighbors?
11:40We are neighbors.
11:41Welcome home.
11:43Hi, everybody.
11:44So you found your space, and next door is the Brother Sewing Room, which is fully equipped
12:01with Brother Sewing Machines.
12:03I want you to know that you have until midnight tonight and a little bit of time tomorrow
12:07to finish your look.
12:08And I'm very excited to introduce the HP TouchSmart notebooks.
12:12There's one for each of you.
12:14This new technology will allow you to work in a creative and innovative way that's greatly
12:18enhanced from a regular sketchbook.
12:20So if you choose to use them, please do.
12:22For this first challenge, we've pre-assigned a model for each of you.
12:26And that card contains her measurements.
12:28This will be very important to your look.
12:31And the winner of this challenge will have immunity and cannot be eliminated in the next challenge.
12:39This is such an important challenge because this is your only chance to show the judges
12:47what makes you different from the other designers.
12:49So I am going over the top, full Seth Aaron, in your face day one.
12:56Hopefully it pays off.
12:58My design is a black cocktail dress with an inset panel of angled pleats and then a pleated cap sleeve.
13:06Did you get fabrics that you liked?
13:08Um, I got one piece that I liked.
13:10So I'm just using that.
13:12Then I know how to make your form stop rolling.
13:16My first design, color, style, and fit.
13:19I think this one little dress encompasses all that.
13:23My designs look the best if you put on a human body.
13:27So why not just drape fabric on myself?
13:30Oh, I love this mirror, really.
13:32It made me look so nice.
13:34I kind of anticipated my working style would be different than normal approach.
13:47Right now I think the major challenges people are having is with the time constraint.
13:51Is everyone in the sewing room?
13:53Everyone's sewing.
13:54Shut up.
13:55Don't even remember her name.
13:57Hi, everybody.
14:04Designers, I'm sending in your models.
14:07I'm not even halfway through the pieces that I'm working on.
14:10You will have 30 minutes with them, so use your time well, okay?
14:14Time to make it work.
14:18He's so cute.
14:19It's too tight.
14:20That's okay.
14:21Easy feet.
14:22This would be up over the bust here.
14:27Oh, this is so mean.
14:30I really love it.
14:31The train's going to be that long.
14:33After I fit Britney, I realized that she was 5'11", so I need to make this long.
14:38I'm so excited.
14:39Kind of like a mermaid-styled evening gown with a chiffon train.
14:43We're definitely going to win.
14:46Oh, my God.
14:47This thing is so big.
14:50I think I like it shorter, actually.
14:52Happy tomorrow, girl.
14:53Be good.
14:54See you.
14:56Okie dokie.
14:57I'm going to get to work.
14:59So, enough about sewing.
15:00Let's talk about the important stuff.
15:01What are you guys going to wear to the runway show tomorrow?
15:04What are you wearing?
15:05Something that I can look dignified going home in.
15:08That's a lot of pins.
15:11Well, because I applicate each stripe.
15:15If I have the time, I'll do a jacket that'll come over this,
15:18so the red will peek out in the same shape with the jacket.
15:22Hi, everybody.
15:24Hi.
15:25Just here to check in with you and see how you're doing.
15:28Hi, Christian.
15:29Hi, Tim.
15:30Talk to me.
15:31Ok, so, for my look, I decided to go with the dress,
15:33because that's what I do best.
15:35My only concern is that, is it out there enough?
15:39You need to ask yourself whether not having something hurts it.
15:45From my point of view, finish this impeccably
15:48and stand there with confidence.
15:51Alright, thank you.
15:53Ping?
15:54Yes?
15:55Are you cold?
15:56No.
15:58You're all enshrouded.
16:00Well, these are the fabric I got.
16:02This is your look?
16:03Yes.
16:04Tell me why this is on you.
16:05Do things on me because I don't have dress form at home.
16:08Doing it on you, does it allow you to be objective?
16:11I would only give it to customers whatever I want to wear myself.
16:15Alright.
16:16Not bad, no.
16:19Alright, go, go, go.
16:20Seth Aaron, how confident are you in this zipper?
16:23I love to see zippers.
16:25Does it become cartoonish?
16:27This challenge is to represent who is Seth Aaron.
16:31Yeah.
16:32That's what I'm doing.
16:33Alright, go for it.
16:34Alright.
16:36Hi, Tim.
16:37Talk to me.
16:38Well, this is my little black dress that I'm working on.
16:42Here's my difficulty.
16:43This fabric shows everything.
16:46Yeah.
16:47I'm so distracted by how it puckers and how those seams don't lay flat.
16:53Yeah.
16:54My heart is just sinking slowly.
16:57Just clean it up as much as you can.
17:00At this point, I'm realizing I can't send it down the runway.
17:03I cannot send it down the runway.
17:05But I think I can fix it.
17:07I'm gonna fix this.
17:08I have to, I have to fix this.
17:10So how's Anthony doing?
17:13Anthony's wonderfully well.
17:15Talk to me.
17:16I didn't want to do just an all over green floor print dress.
17:20But none of this is working for me.
17:22It's not working for me either.
17:23It's not working for me at all.
17:25This is the starring actress.
17:27Why would you introduce a poor supporting player?
17:31Why'd I introduce her?
17:32I just introduced her to you.
17:34But obviously you just decided you don't want to meet her.
17:36So we gonna put her out.
17:38Thanks, Anthony.
17:40Oh, better than I thought it would.
17:42Hello, Jesus.
17:43Was this a need to put the seam in here?
17:46Or was this a design plan?
17:48Um, it was a need.
17:49A need.
17:50Because originally it was gonna be short.
17:51Oh, I see.
17:52And then when I saw my motto, I said,
17:54I'm gonna make it into, like, kind of like a mermaid long train dress.
17:59I'm just looking at how it's constructed, and I find it disturbing.
18:03It was, in a manner of speaking, it was an afterthought.
18:06Yeah.
18:07I'm not confident that it wouldn't have been just as successful, if not more, as a short dress.
18:12This didn't bother me at all.
18:13All right.
18:14Make it work.
18:15All right.
18:17Emilio.
18:18I wanted to create a ombre, but using fabric.
18:22All right.
18:23I have one comment to make, and I think this is fabulously done.
18:26I'm just looking at a top that's still very unfinished.
18:29We've never had anyone in the whole history of the show just not finish.
18:35Ever.
18:36My knee's buckled.
18:37My skirt is still in pieces on the table.
18:41All right, designers, I'm thrilled that you're being as ambitious as you're being.
18:44At the same time, some of you may have to recalibrate your ambitions according to the timeframe,
18:50because I am seriously worried about it.
18:53So for the rest of the night, sew, cut, drape.
18:57Do whatever you need to do to finish this.
19:00Have a good night.
19:01I'll see you tomorrow.
19:07Oh.
19:08Honey.
19:09This is the last thing I can handle right now.
19:10I just want to be finished.
19:12This is, like, high level of stress.
19:15I think my dress very well could get me the win.
19:19I'm just crossing my fingers that it fits perfectly.
19:22When Kelly tries it on tomorrow.
19:24I'm seeing these amazing pieces that people have spent all day doing and less than two hours to go.
19:30I started over.
19:32Completely.
19:36Now, are you doing a whole new dress right now?
19:38Yeah.
19:39I'm hoping that Janine is going to pull some tricks out of her big old designer bag.
19:44Because I'm scared that this could be really devastating.
19:47I only have the top half of the dress done.
19:50Come on, guys. Time to go.
19:52Why?
19:53Why?
19:54Why me?
19:55It's a mix of anticipation, fear, excitement, uncertainty, exhaustion.
20:14I could see some panic in people's face.
20:15Do as much as you can until they say runway time.
20:24I'm thinking about getting as much done as possible because I know there's still a lot to do having restarted my entire design at the last minute.
20:33I have not even put my garment on my model yet. That's my biggest concern right now.
20:44It's not like crazy chiffon that's going to be ridiculous.
20:47Yeah.
20:48I would take the time to roll it again.
20:50Yeah.
20:51Because it looks messy.
20:52I do think Christiane could have pushed her design a little further.
20:55Her lack of construction skills are really going to be detrimental to her.
20:59You have time, you know?
21:02My work is just so different.
21:04The judges may either like it or hate it.
21:08Ping's outfit is very Ping.
21:13Ping may go home.
21:16Good morning, everyone.
21:18Good morning, Dan.
21:19Designers, it's your first runway day.
21:22This is it.
21:24Yes, yes.
21:25It's exciting and it's a little terrifying at the same time.
21:28I'm about to send in your models.
21:30You will have an hour to send them to the Garnier Hair Salon and the L'Oreal Paris Makeup Room.
21:34Okay?
21:36I want you all to use the bluefly.com wall very thoughtfully, very strategically.
21:40It's the source for your accessories.
21:43All right.
21:44I'm sending in your models.
21:45Woo!
21:46Woo!
21:47Woo!
21:48Hi!
21:49Hello!
21:50How are you?
21:51How are you?
21:52How are you doing?
21:53Good.
21:54I'm taking it off.
21:55This dress is so hot.
21:56It's so hot.
21:57I know.
21:58It's insane.
21:59Brittany comes in and I put her in the dress and she looks fabulous.
22:03And my first feeling is I'm going to be one of the top three.
22:07So here's the top and this is the skirt.
22:08Well, I'm nervous because there's a great deal of work to be done to my garment.
22:19Time?
22:20Let's just say time is not officially on my side.
22:24This dress is missing.
22:26I'm really, really anxious to see what the judges will say about the designs.
22:31I'm feeling pretty good about my dress.
22:33How are you feeling?
22:34Feeling good?
22:35Yeah.
22:36I'm feeling good now that I like saw it on her in the fits.
22:39Don't touch it.
22:40It's broken enough.
22:41Miraculously, the dress, it's really, really good.
22:46Minor adjustments and we're good to go.
22:49Oh, I'm going off.
22:52I'm thinking I will finish it on time.
22:56The little pinhole of light at the end of the tunnel has been blooming over the past
23:00few hours and I'm seeing her coming down the runway in a finished look and I'm very happy
23:05with that.
23:06I think we should just go with a plastic, clean, beautiful, smokey eye.
23:28Designers and models, in five minutes we're walking down to the runway.
23:32Five minutes.
23:33All right.
23:36Is that okay?
23:37Oh, absolutely.
23:38Yeah.
23:39My garment's complete.
23:40It's on.
23:41I'm feeling good.
23:42Could I win?
23:43Absolutely.
23:44For some reason, my zipper won't go up.
23:47The tensions I have, I'm sweating like a Baptist preacher.
23:50The reality of it is I still have to produce a garment and right now failure is not an option.
23:56Designers and models, this is it.
23:59Your first runway show.
24:01This first one is going to be an eye opener for everyone.
24:08It's going to be like a reality check.
24:10It's a record.
24:11Done.
24:12Welcome to the runway.
24:13As you know in fashion, one day you're in and the next day you're out.
24:24The winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
24:29An opportunity to sell your line on bluefly.com.
24:32A $50,000 technology suite to create design and run your business from HP and Intel.
24:39And $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to launch your line.
24:43Alright, let's meet the judges.
24:46First we have top American designer Michael Kors.
24:50Hey guys.
24:51Fashion director for Marie Claire magazine, Nina Garcia.
24:54And TV personality and designer of House of Harlow 1960, who will be launching her own apparel line this spring.
25:03Nicole Richie.
25:09We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
25:12One of you will be named the winner.
25:14And one of you will be out.
25:16Let's start the show.
25:21My garment looks amazing, smart, unique, thoughtful.
25:27But it wasn't a costume.
25:29It was as perfect as it could get.
25:38The dress looks better than it did in the workroom.
25:41I don't have a doubt in my mind that all the judges gonna look at it and totally get what I'm about.
25:51As Britney is walking down the runway, I get shows if it's her perfect.
25:57And it's a very glamour evening.
26:00I think the chiffon train looks beautiful.
26:03So I'm confident.
26:09Feel this dress represents me as a designer.
26:11It has this futuristic appeal, but also a little bit of retro.
26:14This is a good first impression for the judges.
26:21I definitely felt great about my garment.
26:26It's something that I believe in.
26:28It's me.
26:29It's a Jay Nicolasario signature.
26:36Sarah walking down the runway is totally amazing.
26:38The pink color of it and the youthful quality of the dress I think shows them that I'm happy.
26:46As the dress comes onto the runway, I realize that I hit it right on the head.
26:56Fit, construction, the dress moves like a dream.
27:00It is the perfect dress.
27:02My garment looks great up there on the runway.
27:07The amount of detail that I put into this and the amount of tailoring that I put into this and the way it fits there I think shows that I've got a lot of skill there.
27:14And that's really what my goal was.
27:16It looks fantastic on her and the overall look is really what I designed.
27:28There's no way I would do any changes.
27:31It feels great to see my dress walk down the runway.
27:37I'm hoping to show the judges what my design philosophy is all about.
27:41The draping and the texture and the color that I use.
27:51Seeing my piece come down the runway is really exciting.
27:54It's creative and it's innovative.
27:56Well done for one day's time.
27:59I'm so happy.
28:04I somehow found it in me to start from the top at the last second and create something that looked really lovely.
28:20I'm staring at it.
28:21I'm obsessing about every little wrinkle in it.
28:24But for me the most important thing was the silhouette.
28:27And I think that that definitely reflected me as a designer.
28:35My dress gives some voice to who I am as a designer.
28:38I love the actual fabric.
28:40The colors.
28:41I like the volume on the side.
28:43I like all of those aspects about my dress.
28:46I feel pretty proud of myself actually considering that I'm new to creating rapidly.
28:55So I feel like I did pretty well.
29:04It still feels like a dream to be here.
29:06I feel very accomplished to be here with my peers.
29:09Even though I do want to beat them.
29:11I do want to beat them.
29:19If I call your name, please step forward.
29:22Amy.
29:24Anna.
29:26Ben.
29:28Janine.
29:30Jay.
29:31Jesse.
29:36Jonathan.
29:37Please step forward.
29:39Maya.
29:41Camila.
29:43Pamela.
29:45If I have called your name, congratulations.
29:49Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
29:53You can leave the runway.
30:02The remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
30:07Let's bring out your models.
30:16I want to start with Anthony.
30:18Tell us about your look.
30:20I just wanted to do a different shape and I wanted to do something that was very functional and very fun and feminine.
30:25I personally like the bottom part of it, but I don't love the top part of it.
30:31I think it looks like you glued a few different dresses together.
30:35And frankly, not a lot of women are going to wear that appendage on their hips.
30:39I mean, she could go to a garden party and steal champagne bottles.
30:44My biggest problem is that the fabric and the silhouette, they're very conflicting.
30:50I did write down, it doesn't fit so great in the back.
30:53It's a little too short and a little too tight.
30:56It's not straight and over the butt, it makes these bubbles, right?
30:58But I actually do think that it's very beautiful and I think you did really great under pressure.
31:03Thank you. I actually wasn't expecting you all were actually very nice.
31:06I thought I was literally going to disintegrate standing here.
31:09So thank you. I survived your words. Thank you.
31:13Seth Aaron, tell us about your look.
31:16I call this Little Tokyo. She's going to the MTV Music Awards.
31:19She's rocking it, new wave, punk style.
31:24I think that from head to toe, you really made everything work.
31:28You understand who you're aiming towards and you really go for it.
31:32And I think that you really committed.
31:34I think that it's fun, shows a point of view.
31:37Can you turn around? I really appreciated the back. I actually loved it.
31:41I actually think a lot of young girls would love to own that dress. It's pretty commercial.
31:48Ping, tell us about your look.
31:51My garment looks just like a fabric if you just hang on the hanger.
31:56When you move, the shape changes, the form changes.
32:00I have to say, when your model walked out, she immediately got my attention.
32:04You could create a whole fashion show around this. This was really a show within itself.
32:09And it's definitely something that I would wear. I love it.
32:12Oh, thank you.
32:14Clothes have to have some degree of hanger appeal when you're presenting your clothes.
32:19You're presenting it here on a model that looks slightly uncomfortable with your clothes.
32:24No.
32:26I think, though, this is a great opening project.
32:29It really shows who you are as a designer and what you believe in.
32:32Jesus, tell us about your look.
32:36As you can see, my specialty is evening gown.
32:39The fabric choice, I think, was perfect.
32:41I wanted to show the women's body and my mother's beautiful, so it worked perfect.
32:45To be honest, I don't know how fashionable it is.
32:47I don't know. It's like a huge crocodile trunk exploded on an evening gown.
32:52I think it's unwieldy and it's not sexy.
32:56It looks almost as if it was short and then you decided to make it long because it has this very unflattering...
33:02Seam for it to be a mini Scott.
33:05It was supposed to be originally short.
33:07Aha!
33:09She looks like a Hershey chocolate bar.
33:11She needs some lightness to her.
33:14I think that it has potential to be a really great dress if you put a little bit more thought into it.
33:22Christiane, tell us about your look.
33:25I like to make sophisticated, elegant, sexy dresses.
33:29Lots of layers and textures to really complement a woman's body.
33:33I really like the draping that you have on this dress, but I'm not really crazy about this combination of fabrics.
33:40I think you can see every single detail, including the hem that is not completely finished.
33:47I think there's something about drapery that should look like she just tossed a scarf on.
33:53You've got that going on on the shoulder beautifully, and then all of a sudden turns around and it's like, oh, she ran out of fabric and it went into the scene.
34:00Emilio!
34:02What I wanted to create was a very young, youthful cocktail dress.
34:07I wanted to showcase technical knowledge with construction.
34:12I like that it's deceptively simple.
34:14Exactly.
34:16To someone who wouldn't really know any better, but then on second inspection, you realize just how much went into it.
34:24You made this kind of weaving?
34:25Yes.
34:26I made it four layers and then I attached the skirt and then segmented the purple onto that.
34:32I appreciate very much your technical work that you've done in this dress.
34:37And I think, speaking about hanger appeal, I am sure this dress looks great hanging as well.
34:44I love that full skirt. It's very fun and sexy at the same time.
34:49I think that it was a great, great choice.
34:53Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
34:56We're going to have a little chat.
34:58And then we'll call you back.
34:59You can leave the runway.
35:07Let's start with Anthony.
35:09I thought there was a problem between the choice of fabric and the silhouette.
35:15There was a contradiction there.
35:16It was kind of like all these, you know, different notes that never came together as a chord.
35:23Well, let's move on to Christiane, which also was a bit unsophisticated.
35:29From the color to the shape.
35:32Sewn terribly.
35:33Yes.
35:34The hem from hell, the puckering.
35:35The hem was the worst.
35:36I think that you have to have a theme.
35:37You have to have a vibe and a feeling.
35:39Story.
35:40And there was just nothing.
35:42Let's move on to Jesus.
35:46I actually kind of liked the dress.
35:49There is a sense of the unexpected in his design.
35:52I just looked at it and it was like, kind of like all the cliches of like, wow, isn't that glamorous?
35:59You know?
36:00She's glamorous.
36:01In what country?
36:02In what year?
36:03Well, I was just going to say, in a lounge in Las Vegas in 1972.
36:07You know?
36:08That would have been glamorous, but not now.
36:13Let's move on to the ones that we did like.
36:15Let's start with Seth Aaron.
36:17It was youthful and at the same time, I think a lot of girls would want to wear that dress.
36:21I'm also intrigued.
36:22I want to know more what he's all about.
36:24And he was one of the few that really gave her a head to toe look.
36:28I mean, the hair worked, the makeup worked, you know, the whole thing.
36:36Okay, let's move on to Emilio.
36:38Also a beautiful dress.
36:40I love that cut of a skirt.
36:42I thought it was really fun and sexy and girly.
36:46When it's that short and when it's that flowy, for me it's too sweet.
36:49But I think the choice of fabric was really smart.
36:53You know, all that work and all that technique looked very special and very expensive.
37:02Okay, let's move on to Ping.
37:04Very unusual.
37:05But I have to say, when her model turned the corner, you were taken away.
37:10You were transported, it was something else.
37:14This was my favorite look.
37:15The challenge was to express who she was and that's who she is.
37:20So did we make our decision?
37:22All right, let's bring them back out.
37:23The six of you represent the best and the worst.
37:36One of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out.
37:40Ping.
37:41Yes?
37:42Yes.
37:43You're safe.
37:44Well done.
37:45The six of you will present the best and the worst.
37:51One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
37:58Ping.
38:00Yes.
38:01You're safe.
38:03Well done.
38:04You're in.
38:05You can leave the runway.
38:11Emilio.
38:12Yes.
38:13We loved your fun, flirty, and well-constructed dress.
38:18Thank you very much.
38:19It was innovative and showed us who you are as a designer.
38:23Yes.
38:24Congratulations.
38:25Yes.
38:26You are the winner of this challenge.
38:29Yes.
38:32You can leave the runway.
38:34Thank you very much, everyone.
38:36Good luck.
38:37I think winning the first challenge, what it does,
38:42it throws down the gauntlet for the other designers, but it also puts a target on my back.
38:47Being the first one tells everyone, this is the guy to watch for.
38:55Seth Aaron.
38:56Well done.
38:57You're in.
38:58You can leave the runway.
38:59Anthony.
39:00Anthony.
39:01Anthony, you're in.
39:02You can leave the runway.
39:03You said in?
39:04I said in before I changed my mind to .
39:06Leave the runway.
39:07Ooh.
39:08Real changes thing.
39:09Christian.
39:10Jesus.
39:11One of you will be out.
39:12Christian, we had issues with your fabric choice and your construction ability, even
39:14on a simple hem.
39:15And more importantly, we still have no idea who you are as a designer.
39:16Jesus.
39:17We are concerned about your taste level.
39:18This was the wrong garment.
39:19and the wrong fabric.
39:20Jesus, unfortunately, we are concerned about your taste level.
39:25This was the wrong garment, in the wrong fabric.
39:26Jesus, unfortunately it's not too late at all.
39:28It's a bad idea of it.
39:29It's a bad idea of it.
39:30You have a bad idea.
39:31It's a bad idea.
39:32No, you don't like this.
39:33No, you don't have a bad idea.
39:34But, you don't like this.
39:35Let us know how you are, Yaaaaay.
39:36No, you don't like that.
39:37We're talking about this.
39:38I can't be organic.
39:39Hannity, I can't be organic.
39:40Jesus, what are you eating about it?
39:41I have a bad idea.
39:42I have a bad idea.
39:43How do you eat theŠ°Ń mesmas day?
39:44in the wrong fabric.
39:46Jesus, unfortunately, one has to go.
39:52But it's not you.
40:00You're in. You can leave the runway.
40:02I think you're right.
40:08I'm sorry, Christiane.
40:10That means you're out.
40:12Hope for the same.
40:14Good luck to you.
40:16Thank you. Thanks.
40:26Guys. Wow, sweetie.
40:28Bye.
40:30Bye.
40:32I'm feeling pretty disappointed.
40:34I did not think that my dress was a worse out there,
40:36that I would be eliminated.
40:38Christiane. Yes.
40:40You worked so hard to get here.
40:42I know.
40:43And it's with the deepest regret that I tell you
40:44that you have to go to the work room
40:45and clean up your space, okay?
40:46Me being eliminated doesn't mean anything at all
40:50when it comes to who I am and where I'm going
40:54and what I'm going to do.
40:56I took all the positive out of it.
40:58And I met some amazing people.
41:00So I'm really thankful.
41:02Hey.
41:04Bye.
41:08And you're welcome.
