McFarlane Toys DC Direct The New Batman Adventures Mr. Freeze Action Figure Review

00:03Here's your look at McFarlane Toys DC Direct.
00:05The new Batman Adventures, Mr. Freeze.
00:08An expert in the field of cryogenics, Victor led a relatively normal existence.
00:33He worked diligently but also fell in love and eventually married a woman named Nora.
00:37Sadly, things took an unfortunate turn soon after.
00:40Nora became terminally ill and to stop her degenerative disease from taking her life,
00:45Victor put her into suspended animation.
00:47The corporation funding Victor's work shut down his experiments and in the process caused a horrible accident.
00:53The coolants did unrepairable harm and made it impossible for him to survive without freezing temperatures.
00:59To counteract this, Victor constructed a special ultra-durable suit to keep his body alive and the right temperature.
01:05He embraced his new persona and became Mr. Freeze.
01:08Before we meet the man that never wants to know a day that's over 40 degrees,
01:12instead of measuring things in degrees, let's measure things in inches.
01:15We're going to take this tape measure and measure both in inches and in centimeters from my Canadian collectors out there.
01:20While I'm doing this as well, I'd like to thank the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did make this review possible.
01:24Yeah, Mr. Freeze is a repurposed figure from the one we got from the DC Direct days.
01:28Because of that, he's going to stand the same, 6 1⁄4 inches in height or 16 centimeters tall.
01:34I guess lucky for me, and therefore lucky for you, I still happen to have my DC Direct, Mr. Freeze.
01:39Considerable colors of blue have changed.
01:41You can see now the one that we get here from McFarlane Toys is notably brighter in the blue.
01:45The black is almost about the same, although I will say, though,
01:48the darker black worked maybe a little bit better on the DC Direct release.
01:52Speaking of boys in blue here, let's also bring in the Batman that we've also looked at.
01:55This was a repurposed, or essentially a recolored DC Direct Batman that just happened to be this Batman over here.
02:02Now, McFarlane Toys, of course, has acquired the licenses for all the stuff from DC Direct.
02:06Because of that, of course, we get the chance now to pick up these figures that maybe missed your radar or sights before.
02:12Like, for example, both the Riddler and Scarecrow that we've looked at as well.
02:16Perhaps to warm your interest in picking up Mr. Freeze again,
02:18included this time around, you can actually get yourself a cell taken from Batman New Adventures.
02:24If we flip around, though, to the back of it, it actually does tell us this animation cell reproduction.
02:29And it does pull up from the episode of Cold Comfort, which was Season 1, Episode 3.
02:34Unlike in the past, when Mr. Freeze's ultimate goal was to cure and reunite with his wife,
02:38this time he's only bent on malicious and spiteful vengeance as a way to lash out against humanity.
02:43I'm reading this, by the way, on the back of this.
02:45Because he decided that if he can't have happiness, then nobody can.
02:49And makes the big mistake of targeting Bruce Wayne's loved ones.
02:53This was released on October 11, 1997.
02:57Follows, of course, of the people also responsible for that.
02:59Hilary Bader was the story person behind the story and directed by Dan Reba.
03:04This also does fold out, by the way.
03:06So if you'd like to have something like this displayed on your desk shelf, hey, why not?
03:09But you can prop that up like that and perhaps also have it displayed with the other cell shaded or cell screenshots that we've gotten also from Todd and his team.
03:19We've got one from Riddler.
03:20We've got also one from the Scarecrow as well.
03:23Should we maybe perhaps keep this in frame while we look at the rest of the things for Mr. Freeze?
03:27Everybody can kind of put their hands up to their heads and just kind of just be in awe.
03:32Oh, Mr. Freeze.
03:33What a cool guy he is.
03:34He is, though, a cool guy.
03:35What's kind of cool, though, is also the way they've handled the display stands.
03:38These now news stands, if we bring in the original one from Mr. Freeze, similar, in fact, actually in size.
03:44I would be hard-pressed to, like, look at one over the other and think that one is not maybe smaller or bigger.
03:49If anything, it looks like they're identical.
03:52One thing that's changed, though, is the front, side, and three-quarter turn of Mr. Freeze is now completely absent.
03:59What we get, though, instead is just the new Batman Adventures, which is fine.
04:02I don't think it necessarily needs to have...
04:05I mean, it's a nice-looking stand for what it was at the time,
04:07but I think just the simplicity of the black stands work a little bit better.
04:11One thing that they have also done better, too, is that the original stands had these very obnoxious waist clips.
04:17These would always be falling apart when you're trying to put these around the figure's waist.
04:21These now actually have more spring clips.
04:24So they work okay.
04:25What doesn't work necessarily okay is the fact that the clips sit really loose on the pull.
04:29I'm almost even tempted to add maybe, like, a little bit of nail polish or something just to thicken up the pull,
04:34just so that this doesn't sit as loose as it does.
04:37As you can just see, it kind of moves around a lot.
04:40This can, of course, clip around Mr. Freeze's waist, if you prefer.
04:43Basically, just clip this open, hold it open, and clip it around Mr. Freeze's waist,
04:48as we certainly did do at the beginning of the review.
04:50But, yeah, again, though, it does sit a tad on the loose side.
04:53While he's standing, though, there, looking cool and all,
04:57let's look at the other accessories, though, that come in clear with the figure.
05:00Mr. Freeze does have some swappable hands.
05:02Is the picture distracting everybody?
05:04Okay, let's move the picture out of the way.
05:05It'll maybe come back a little bit later to the end of this review.
05:09Out of the packaging, though, Mr. Freeze does come with closed fists.
05:12To remedy that, if you'd like to have him doing something else other than just making fists,
05:16the figure does also have a couple of gripping hands, good for holding his freeze gun.
05:20The figure does also come in clear with a couple of relaxed hands, too.
05:22These hands, by the way, are super easy to change.
05:26Freeing Mr. Freeze, not from his frozen prison, but certainly from his display stand prison.
05:32If you hold on to, actually, the figure's forearms, easily you can yank off the hands.
05:36Find the hand that you want to then use.
05:38Take this hand right here and plug that in place.
05:41Hey, that was easy.
05:42Watch how easy it is again.
05:43Just un-peg that.
05:45Take the hand.
05:46Oh, oh, we've got to make sure we've got the rule of thumb facing the right way.
05:49And you can, again, easily swap those out.
05:51And what then can be used, now that we've taken the time to change the hands,
05:56the figure does come in clear with his freeze gun.
05:58Let's just show you, though, the original freeze gun.
06:02Would you be looking at one and seeing the other and not think they're identical?
06:05I think you'd be right to think that they're identical.
06:08Not really much does change between the two freeze guns.
06:10This one's actually a little shinier.
06:12This one's a little bit more matted.
06:13I don't think you're wrong either by choosing one over the other.
06:17I think both are perfectly fine.
06:20To put this into his hand, though, let's go ahead and just do that now.
06:23The plastic, at least for his fingers, are soft enough that you can take the handle and wedge it in there.
06:29Wedge, wedge, wedge.
06:30There we go.
06:31Unfortunately, one trade-off, though, with having a figure that looks screen accurate like this,
06:36or cartoon accurate, very limited articulation.
06:39In fact, if I show you right now, we're going to kind of just tease early.
06:43See this little hinge right there?
06:46You're probably thinking to yourself, what hinge?
06:47What hinge?
06:48The hinge is right there, and there's very little of it.
06:51Because of that, you can't actually get any more than just this much of a bend.
06:55It doesn't bend at 90 degrees.
06:56Because, I mean, it barely really moves.
07:00Obviously, he's going to have some shoulder articulation.
07:02But really, when it comes to his elbows, there's not really much that Mr. Freeze can do when it comes to bending his elbow.
07:08Of the other things that come in clear with the figure...
07:10Oops, let's not drop them in the process.
07:11I just dropped the other ones over there.
07:13The figure does also come in clear with the spider legs.
07:16If you're familiar, though, with Mr. Freeze as into the new adventures of Batman,
07:19Mr. Freeze adopts, though, these spider legs.
07:21So essentially what it is, is he takes his head off,
07:24and he walks around, creepily, creepily, using these spider legs.
07:29To bring in at least one of them that...
07:31I dropped all the other ones that are on the floor right now.
07:33But the original ones were in dark grey.
07:35The new ones, though, are actually more in a white.
07:37They look actually very close in colour to his face.
07:41Again, if you like the grey a little bit more than the lighter white,
07:44I mean, if you essentially still have the figure,
07:46you could just really use, because obviously they're using the exact same ball joints.
07:51You could use, though, these legs, instead of these legs.
07:55To change, though, and, well, at least to get him on those legs,
07:58picking up Mr. Freeze right now, and one thing that's cool about the figure...
08:01Oh, I'm going to try not to do that through the rest of this video.
08:04But what's neat, though, about the figure is that he does actually have,
08:06first of all, a removable dome.
08:09Normally, I wouldn't advise this if somebody has to control his temperature,
08:12because obviously taking off the dome...
08:13Poor man's going to heat up and just, well,
08:17things aren't going to look good for Victor.
08:19Speaking of looking good, though...
08:21Boy, I've got to say that's a good-looking head skull.
08:22Let's bring back in the original Mr. Freeze.
08:25And I'm going to pop the dome off that one
08:27and show you guys the differences between the two.
08:30This one's certainly a little bit more darker in colours.
08:33You can see, like, maybe the features on his eyes are a little bit more...
08:36a little bit more standout.
08:38You can see, like, the colouring on his face is much lighter here on the new release.
08:42A little bit darker on the original DC Direct.
08:44The bodies, though, are exactly the same.
08:45I know I'm kind of pressed for time.
08:47This guy's already heating up as we speak.
08:49But if you look at the two bodies, though,
08:51the black here is certainly shinier than the original.
08:55You can also see clearly that the blue is a very different colour as well.
08:58This comes more across, like, teal.
09:00This comes across more like a very icy blue.
09:03Like, the bodies are exactly the same, though.
09:05There's nothing really at all different between the two figures.
09:07And that they also work the exact same way.
09:09I just want to put this guy down for a second here.
09:12I also want to show you guys the differences between the domes.
09:14Now, you would think, though, the domes would be exactly the same.
09:17And yet, though, the new one from Todd and his team actually is more of an opaque plastic.
09:21The one from the DC Direct is actually a clear plastic.
09:25I mean, both really work the exact same way.
09:26If you would like to really combine the DC Direct and the McFarlane Toys release,
09:30you could find yourself maybe making a perfect Mr. Freeze.
09:33Because, like, the dome would work really the exact same way.
09:36That's the clear dome.
09:38Let's pop that off.
09:40Just put on the opaque dome.
09:41Yeah, it's a little harder to make out his face.
09:44Just because, again, like, the plastic that they're using is a little bit more.
09:46It's not as see-through.
09:48But the head, though, works the same way.
09:51That you basically can pop the entire top of the head off.
09:54Like that.
09:55And we'll just kind of put his body down here for a second.
09:58Now, if you look at Mr. Freeze.
09:59And Bo, by the way, he does also have head articulation.
10:02The head can't be really accessed.
10:04The head can't really be accessed.
10:06Unless, though, you take the dome off.
10:09So let's just pop that back in place.
10:11I'm actually kind of surprised, really, that my Mr. Freeze still doesn't have a missing dome.
10:14For all the times I've had that figure sitting inside of a tote.
10:17But with what you do with these legs, if you look on the bottom of this, the middle hole is the one that attaches onto the neck.
10:23Right?
10:24All the other holes around it, though, are to accommodate the legs.
10:28So you get yourself the spider legs.
10:30Attach ones right there.
10:31And these are all, again, ball joints.
10:33So it makes things very much more easier when it comes to the possibility on the figure.
10:36Or just plug that in.
10:38Hold on to the dome.
10:39You really don't want the dome to fall off.
10:41Take another one.
10:42We'll just plug it in.
10:43Rinse and repeats.
10:44Having a hard time grabbing it.
10:45Rinsing and repeating is what we're doing right now.
10:47Plugging all the four legs in.
10:49There we go.
10:52And now you've got Mr. Freeze with his spider legs.
10:54Now, because these are all poseable, you can move the legs around and get them in the proper pose that you want to have them.
10:59Let's just bring the leg down.
11:01Bring the legs down.
11:02There we go.
11:03And there's Mr. Freeze with the spider legs.
11:05Now, ideally, though, if I didn't happen to have dropped all the other legs, I'd have to go and retrieve those.
11:11You could really then have also the figure displayed if you happen to have two Mr. Freases.
11:15One Mr. Freeze you could have still on his robotic body.
11:18The other Mr. Freeze could be scampering around using his spider legs.
11:22Again, legs a little bit darker in color, but they work the exact same way.
11:28Stop that.
11:29Let's get the dome back onto his head so at least the man can breathe.
11:32We'll move the figure off to the side.
11:34And let's go ahead and take everything back off.
11:36I guess really what we also have the spider legs on him.
11:39Look at the articulation when you have them this way.
11:41Then we'll kind of put them back on the body.
11:43You know, again, you already kind of know.
11:45So if you take the dome off, the head's only going to be...
11:48Well, I shouldn't say only.
11:49Only sort of downplays the fact that this figure does actually have a ball joint in his head.
11:53You can move the head up and down.
11:54Up and down.
11:55You can also rotate it around as well.
11:57And there's a bit of a rock.
11:58Now, because the figure does also have the spider legs, those, again, are all individually ball jointed.
12:03Sometimes, though, moving the legs does result in the ball joints popping off.
12:06But you can see, though, that they move fairly well.
12:09Fairly well.
12:11Some work a little bit better than others.
12:13So let's pull those all off.
12:14Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.
12:16It goes.
12:17We'll pop the dome back on, obviously, his head.
12:20Make sure it's all the way on there.
12:22There we go.
12:23And then we'll pop it back onto the peg, which plugs in like that.
12:27Once he's back to his body, the posability on Mr. Freeze really is only that he can swivel a little bit back and forth on his neck.
12:33It's really more there just to attach him to the rest of his body.
12:36It's not really there necessarily, so the head can actually do anything.
12:40The arms certainly can do a little bit more than that.
12:42They would normally have rotated all the way around.
12:44Because he does have the shoulders that stick out like this, a full rotation on his arms may be harder to pull off.
12:52The arms do also hinge out at a T pose or 90 degrees.
12:55In addition to that, though, the figure does also have a swivel more in his forearm, not in his biceps.
13:01His bicep doesn't have any posability.
13:03But unfortunately, though, again, there's that little, little, little bit of a hinge only working for his elbow.
13:08So that's as much as you can really do with Mr. Freeze's arm.
13:13I wish he could have actually done more, but in order to do more, they would have had to cut further into the bicep.
13:18So I can understand probably why DC Direct initially chose more style over function.
13:24And obviously, when McFarlane Toys just picked up a license, they just followed suit.
13:28For the rest, though, of his suit, the figure does have a little bit what seems to be a ball joint.
13:33More swivels back and forth, though.
13:35There's a swivel down below here as well.
13:37I want to hold on to make sure that dome doesn't fall off.
13:40And then when you look at his legs, his legs clearly have a visible pin.
13:43Those pins allow the legs to hinge out.
13:46Now, I have one real hard time with this one leg.
13:49This other leg is fine.
13:50I don't have any issues there.
13:51This one leg seems to be a little bit more stubborn.
13:55The legs, of course, move forward only by just a little bit.
13:58Also move back.
13:59No real swivel at the top of the thigh, but there is a single hinge for the knee.
14:03And there's articulation here for the boot.
14:05Ankle articulation up and down.
14:07And there's an ankle rocker back and forth.
14:10Now, if you had the original Mr. Freeze, it would be, you know, it'd be easy then to look at the two and just think,
14:14well, it's cosmetic change.
14:16Because really, outside of just adding the new display stand and, of course, the cell,
14:20the screenshot or the scene shot, put it right back over there.
14:26And we can just prop that up there.
14:28We can just kind of admire Mr. Freeze.
14:30Oh, what a cool cat he is.
14:32Yeah, if you already had the Mr. Freeze, you can really decide for yourself,
14:35is it worth to reinvest getting this figure again?
14:37On one end, you essentially do have a brighter looking Mr. Freeze in the colors.
14:41Some could really make the argument that in the cartoon, he kind of comes across more like having the teal color.
14:47So really, the DC Direct did it a little bit better.
14:50One at least, though, nudge in the direction maybe that you need.
14:53One thing at least of having already this Mr. Freeze and then picking up the new one.
14:57You can decide which one is going to stay on this robotic body.
14:59And then which one then is going to attach to the robot legs.
15:02Not something that you could normally have said with other Batman animated series figures,
15:06but certainly something, though, that you can say for Victor Freeze.
15:09I think I had a dream about this one.
15:11Spider walking, separated heads, and fully still firing run amok robot bodies.
15:15Even though he's the stuff of nightmares,
15:16it's a dream come true for collectors that missed their chance to get the DC Direct Mr. Freeze when he first came out.
15:22One benefit, though, certainly from the standpoint of Todd picking up the license,
15:26the cost of producing the figures.
15:28They've already scratched off and saved the cost of producing the molds from scratch.
15:31Because, again, DC Direct would already have done that.
15:34No, if anything, they just would have had to dust off the molds,
15:36recolor them a little bit differently so they're not still the same Mr. Freeze as the original DC Direct one.
15:41But for at least, though, the opportunity for collectors to finally get their hands on Mr. Freeze, cold or not,
15:47this at least gives you an opportunity and you don't have to pay through the nose,
15:50pay through the roof to get your hands on the original.
15:52Now, this Mr. Freeze does at least, hopefully through this review I've showed you guys,
15:56there are some differences, some notable differences, cosmetic or otherwise,
15:59between this one and the original.
16:01The original one did also have the turnaround display stand.
16:04This one doesn't have that at all.
16:06It does have, at least I feel, to be a better stand using the black ones that have the new Batman Adventures printed on the top.
16:11The accessories are the same, the robot legs are still the same,
16:14and Mr. Freeze still suffocates when you take his dome off.
16:18It's funny, though, that the dome on Mr. Freeze is actually more of a frosted plastic rather than the clear plastic.
16:23I think that's one thing, though, that I like the DC Direct doing a little bit better.
16:26But yeah, Mr. Freeze, cool looking figure.
16:28I did it again, didn't I?
