00:00What happens when you take a company that knows how to do figures, and you combine it with a guy that knows how to do disguises?
00:06Here's your look at the Hayatoys G.I. Joe Exquisite Mini-Series Dreadnought Leader, Zartan.
00:10Zartan is a true chameleon whose natural abilities and mimicry acting and prosthetic effects in disguise have been enhanced by significant genetic modification.
00:35He can assume any identity at any time, with absolute precision. The true identity of Zartan is hidden behind dozens of aliases, making it nearly impossible to piece together his history, and causing his sense of self to break down and destabilize his already chaotic mind.
00:52Zartan is also the head of an outlaw motorcycle club called the Dreadnoughts.
00:57For a second, I thought the master of disguise was posing as a figure from Hasbro.
01:00No, in fact, actually, Hasbro hasn't had the G.I. Joe license of the 3 3⁄4-inch scale for quite some time now.
01:05Passing the baton over to Hayatoys, who I think have done, actually, generally a good job on doing both the G.I. Joes and the Cobras.
01:11We're going to bring in some examples of their Exquisite Mini-Series Cobra members in a second.
01:15First, though, backing up just a bit, I'd like to thank the folks over at Hayatoys that did provide the sample.
01:20From what I can see, at least, the sites that normally do stock Hayatoys don't seem to have a listing for Zartan.
01:25The only way I could tell you, though, that he's currently on a pre-order is going directly to Hayatoys' sites.
01:30We're going to take the tape measure, generally without rule of thumb with G.I. Joes is they're generally 3 3⁄4-inch scale.
01:36And yeah, Zartan still lives up to that.
01:38That figure's going to stand, in fact, just a little over 3 3⁄4-inch, but I think a lot of that has to do with the hood.
01:44That's going to translate, though, to a figure that's approximately 10 centimeters tall.
01:47Okay, so who do we have?
01:48Well, we have, first of all, Cobra Commander.
01:51Then, of course, we also have Destro, who often is the foil for Zartan.
01:54I've just recently found where I put my Storm Shadow.
01:57I have been omitting him lately when it comes to size comparison, so we can bring him in now.
02:01Here's also what he looks like with the Baroness.
02:04Again, these are all the ones that we've covered off here on this channel.
02:07If you certainly, though, would like to go back and check out those earlier reviews, they should still be available.
02:11While I have been talking away, though, I did bring in Firefly.
02:14Here's also what he looks like with Major Blood.
02:16I did also want to bring in some other examples as well.
02:18Here's what the figure looks like with Judge Dredd, just as an example of an exquisite miniseries that they have currently done.
02:24In the past, they've also covered a lot of the Predator figures.
02:27So, while Predator figures obviously are going to be a little bit taller in size, as the example I'm bringing in right now, the Berserker.
02:33And they'd also want to bring in a 25th anniversary G.I. Joe.
02:37I don't have many of these really left in my collection.
02:39I still, though, have a Viper, because we just recently looked at the Retro Cardback Viper.
02:44So, he would certainly be a good example to bring in.
02:46Speaking of bringing in, let's bring in all the accessories that come in clue with Zartan.
02:50His hood, by the way, is removable, as well as a knife that's sheathed on the back of his body.
02:55Before we actually look at those things, though, let's look at this thing.
02:57The figure does come in clue with a display stand.
02:59I'm going to bring in an example of one of the display stands we've gotten from one of the other Cobra releases in the past.
03:04Just, though, to show you, though, that the placement of these, if I actually just line them up,
03:10this one actually is an exact carbon copy.
03:12They seem to be recycling about three different molds of stands where the placing of the bullets are in different places.
03:18The actual placement of the pegs are going to be exactly the same.
03:21And why I also bring in another display stand is also to drive home the fact that these figures come in clue with eye brackets.
03:27How it works, though, is that these eye brackets, there's a slot.
03:30Well, there's actually, in fact, two slots on all of the sides of the stand.
03:34You take only really one side, unless you really have more stands to work with.
03:37And I'm just going to use the example of one eye bracket.
03:40Essentially, really, you could use two.
03:42And you really only just need one to attach two stands together.
03:46Often, at times, you'll find yourself kind of balancing between the two and just trying to, there we go, locking everything in place.
03:52You get yourself a much larger terrain.
03:54Is that how it works?
03:55It is, in fact, how it works.
03:56And think of that and then multiply it by how many more display stands that you have.
04:00If you have two more, well, obviously, you're going to have a much larger rectangle.
04:04It can just continue that trend until you have yourself a very large terrain.
04:08So, with that off to the side.
04:10Now, Zartan here really is mostly based on the design that they've got from the Classified Series.
04:15Speaking of Hasbro earlier, in fact, actually, all of the G.I. Joes of the Exquisite Mini Series have somewhat been inspired by the original molds of the Classified Zartan.
04:24I just happen to have a larger Zartan just off to the side here.
04:27Of the accessories, though, that come in clear with the character, Zartan first does have his backpack.
04:33I'm going to bring in the Zartan from the Classified Series so you guys can see.
04:37I mean, if just to look at them, other than just shrinking down the size, they are exactly the same, except for one thing.
04:43Zartan from the Classified Series from Hasbro did actually have pegs placed on the bottom where he had additional trophies.
04:50This looks like perhaps a monkey's paw.
04:53I don't know if it's going to grant wishes, though.
04:54And this also looks to be the severed head of a snake.
04:57Don't get this anywhere near Cobra Commander.
04:59Just by the size, I'm sure, of this, there's no way that they could be able to occupy such small accessories.
05:04I suppose they probably could have.
05:05I just put the holes down below here.
05:07But, I mean, looking at the two, they're exactly...
05:09Well, so, hold on.
05:10Flipping them around, they're somewhat exactly the same.
05:13There's also a little clip on the top here.
05:15This clip doesn't really serve a purpose.
05:17I think it's actually more so a wire than a handle.
05:19And there's also a little nib, a little peg on the side that can accommodate his pistol.
05:24Now, whereas this one did open up, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, did reveal a face inside.
05:31Never really quite sure who exactly the face is supposed to be.
05:34I mean, he's got, like, himself a mustache and a little soul patch down below there.
05:38But the mask is removable, and we all kind of know the drill.
05:41This attaches onto Zartan's face.
05:44Why I say this one works is that this one basically does the same thing, but I don't think it does it as well.
05:50Yes, you can still open it.
05:51Yes, there's some nice interior detail that's been done.
05:54And yes, there is a space to accommodate the face.
05:57The face is this one right here.
06:00I guess it probably would make some sense to open back up the backpack
06:03and show you guys the differences between the two faces.
06:06There is certainly a little bit more coloring just above the eyes.
06:11It's not as pale, obviously, as the face right here.
06:14The problem with it, though, is that while it does fit inside, in theory,
06:19so again, it just fits inside the little groove there, the little open canal.
06:23And I really want to make sure I've got that all the way in there to show you.
06:27It sits in there, but I've noticed, though, to take the other half of the backpack
06:31and sandwich the two together, that it doesn't really keep the backpack closed.
06:36And probably, as you can see there, the pegs aren't long enough, first of all.
06:40The holes that are provided on the side would then guide those pegs,
06:43but it just can't stay together, as you can see.
06:48And I think, really, I've got the face all in there.
06:50So it's not like I need to push it down a little bit more or push the backpack down more.
06:55It just isn't staying properly.
06:57Now, if we were to remove the mask, put that to the side,
07:00and we go back and take the top half of the backpack and snap it together,
07:04it stays perfectly fine.
07:06I mean, it's still a little loose, but it's still to the point where
07:09if I have it like this and I shake it about, it's not going to go anywhere.
07:14They needed, really, to make it at least a little deeper.
07:17I mean, I can't think that they can really have changed the mask,
07:20because the mask has to be a certain size.
07:22The mask, by the way, though, if you want to put it on Zartan's face,
07:26it doesn't...
07:26I mean, it works okay, but it almost even seems like the face is way too big.
07:31Because if you look at Zartan's face,
07:33and then you look at the mask that really should belong on him,
07:36it seems like almost really the mask is too flat,
07:39and it's not contoured enough to fit around his frame.
07:42So it's more show, I feel, than tell.
07:45There's no real way that I feel that you can be able to attach that.
07:47Even if you kind of tuck it underneath the cowl piece,
07:50that little hood piece that he has,
07:52it just doesn't feel like it fits all that well.
07:55Yeah, so that's a bit disappointing, though,
07:58that the master of disguise can't literally change his disguise.
08:02Certainly, though, when it comes to the rest of the figure's accessories.
08:05And we'll just get him to stand here for a second.
08:08Zartan, I do find leans a little back,
08:10and you may be able to see the way that they've actually got the feet arched.
08:14Even if I bend it forward as far forward as I think I can get it,
08:18Zartan, I always kind of feel like I have to lean him forward.
08:21I mean, obviously, he's going to make use of a display stand anyways.
08:23The stand's there.
08:24But just to stand him on his own,
08:27Zartan just can't quite cut it.
08:30The figure does come in clue with his pistol.
08:32And as the example here, I'm going to bring the pistol back in
08:35that came in clue with the, I was going to say, 25th anniversary.
08:38That's the Viper that I had.
08:40The classified series, Zartan, has a pistol that's pretty much the exact same molding,
08:44though just shrunk down in size.
08:46Well, he's so sad.
08:47That was the sound of shrinking, not the sound of being sad.
08:50But I guess the sound of being sad would still be,
08:52I know how it would be hard to decipher between the two.
08:56The pistol's, though, pretty much identical.
08:58And the pistol for the classified series is Zartan.
09:01Where is the back of the backpack here?
09:04Basically, you just plug it on.
09:06This would work, I'm sure, so much better if we actually had the front of the backpack in front.
09:09And, let's take this off for a second.
09:13Hold on.
09:14Plug that in place.
09:15Take the pistol, as we intended to do.
09:18And it just plugs onto the side.
09:19Take that idea and just shrink it.
09:22Are you sad?
09:23No, I was talking about shrinking again.
09:24That just plugs onto the side peg.
09:27Now, he only actually has one on one side.
09:30He doesn't have it on the other, where the larger backpack clearly had pegs on both sides.
09:34So, again, they took a few little things and they removed it from the classified.
09:38But, other than that, the backpack somewhat sticks the same.
09:41There's also a hole on the back of Zartan's body.
09:43So, you can take yourself the backpack, plug it on the back of his body,
09:46and you can carry it around the same way that the vintage toy did as well.
09:51Now, this clearly isn't going to help the figure to stand better.
09:54It'd be fun.
09:55Oh, yeah.
09:55Okay.
09:55Maybe it may help him a little bit better.
09:57One other accessory is more so a pair of accessories.
10:00The figure does also have trigger-firing finger hands to have him holding the blaster.
10:04I mean, realistically, if you don't even want to have to change out the hands,
10:07he already has C-gripping hands on the ends of his forearms anyways.
10:11If you don't want to worry about having to swap out the hands,
10:14you could easily just phone it in and use those gripping hands instead.
10:17But, if you really want him to actually be able to fire something,
10:20the only way, really, that he'd be able to fire is if with his fingers are sitting around the trigger.
10:26Okay.
10:26So, let's have a look at Zartan.
10:27Now, there are two actually included accessories that we didn't already talk about.
10:31One is the fact that Zartan does have a removable hood.
10:34Now, I'm not going to get into the debate of whether this is hood or hair.
10:38I know we've talked about this at Nausea in the past.
10:40Depending on, of course, when you see Real American Hero,
10:43Zartan would either look like he'd have blowing, flowing hair,
10:46or he'd also look like he'd have a hood.
10:48We're not going to really debate about it.
10:49But, anyways, though, the hood is removable.
10:52It's just soft plastic and basically just fits over top of his head.
10:56Frictioned at least enough.
10:58If you tip it upside down, the hood's not going to go anywhere.
11:01It's funny, though, that we're talking about hoods going somewhere
11:03because, actually, here's the classified series Zartan
11:06so you guys can see the differences.
11:08One may be very observant to notice that this Zartan, the larger scale,
11:12does not actually have his hood.
11:14I had a hood on him.
11:15Then I also got myself a kitten.
11:17I think, really, between the two, Zartan's hood and the introduction of a new kitten,
11:21somewhere the hood has gone missing.
11:23I'm going to see if I can find it.
11:24Hopefully, I won't have to find it in the litter box.
11:26But, if you look at the bodies, too, I mean, they're obviously very much inspired.
11:30The smaller one is clearly inspired by the larger design.
11:33It also is inspired in the sense that, if you look on the back of the figure's body,
11:37he has himself a sheath knife.
11:40That just tucks on the back of his body.
11:42And, actually, quite securely, too, if you can line it up to fit it.
11:46There we go.
11:47Yeah, it's not going to be going anywhere.
11:49And then you can have him, obviously, holding the knife if you want.
11:52Basically, just take that and fit that into his hands.
11:56And, of course, you can also take yourself...
11:59Where's the gun?
11:59Where's the gun?
12:00Oh, the gun, right, was attached to the backpack.
12:03And you can also fit that into his hands.
12:05Don't you want to swap it out for the triggering, firing finger hands?
12:08Not right now, I won't.
12:09But you can actually have the figure holding both accessories.
12:14Taking those out, putting them to the side.
12:17Now, while Zartan doesn't have a color-changing ability,
12:20I would imagine, though, now that they've got the use of the mold,
12:23Hyatt Toys could easily release this guy's convention exclusive.
12:26Where the color changed the skin.
12:28Simply just, again, using the skin tone that he has right now
12:31and swapping out in blue instead.
12:34Faces, though, between the two are somewhat similar.
12:37I guess, like for like, Zartan to Zartan will take off both the hoods
12:41so you guys can see.
12:43Yeah, the faces are very similar.
12:44You would expect, like, Zartan to have a look that he has.
12:47I mean, obviously, he's kind of got the painted on.
12:49I guess those really aren't painted on.
12:51Does Zartan really paint his face?
12:53Or is that just something, just the way he's genetically made?
12:56But this one actually does have the points of the black
12:59a little higher up on his forehead.
13:01These ones actually keep them a little bit lower.
13:03I wish, though, that the points weren't as low as they were.
13:06I mean, it's almost like they took the idea of the shape
13:09and they flipped it around.
13:11The problem with it having low like this
13:12is that the lips come pretty close to it
13:14and actually makes them look more like the crow.
13:17I would have actually made a space just below the last point
13:21so that there was a space and a gap between the lips
13:24and the part of that black.
13:27I'm not sure, again, if intentionally they wanted to flip it around
13:30or if there was just an error print with the way that they printed the faces
13:34where it was actually supposed to be the other way around.
13:36Face looks good again for Zartan.
13:38He's got himself a separate bandana piece.
13:41I would imagine if you would just take the head off
13:43you'd be able to take the bandana off.
13:45I don't know really why you would want.
13:47But yeah, overall, the body looks pretty good on Zartan.
13:50The colors on his pants are a little lighter than that of the classified series
13:55but the boots are pretty much retaining the same thing.
13:57There's no place also to store the pistol.
14:00The only place really, again, you can attach that is onto the back of his backpack.
14:04All in all, though, it's a nice looking Zartan.
14:05And it certainly does seem a little bit bare, doesn't it,
14:08if he doesn't have his hood slash hair attached on top of his head.
14:13Now, for Zartan's articulation, if you're familiar by now
14:15with the exquisite miniseries and especially G.I. Joe,
14:18then Zartan follows the format.
14:19The head's going to be on a ball joint, so the head rotates well.
14:22If I get my blasted thumb out of the way,
14:24the head's going to look up and down.
14:25You can also move it back and forth.
14:27And yeah, the head rotates back and forth this way as well.
14:30The upper torso is going to be,
14:31and just be careful that you don't bang the hood,
14:33is on a ball joint.
14:35Very nice ball joint.
14:37Actually, even at the base of the abdomen, it's doing the same.
14:40Arms rotate forward and back.
14:42Luckily, though, at least his shoulder pads are attached to his torso armor.
14:46They're not attached to the arms.
14:48I did notice, though, that Zartan's arms are really tight,
14:51at least tight on my figure.
14:53The figure does have a bicep swivel,
14:55and he does also have a double hinge on the elbow.
14:57I will be, though, wanting to point out
14:59that the hinge that they use for the plastic for his elbow
15:02isn't quite the same color as the bicep or the forearm.
15:05If that doesn't bother you,
15:07then I probably can just move forward, can't I?
15:09The figure does have no swivel here for his forearm,
15:12because, again, like all the swiveling
15:13is really going to happen up here.
15:15Hands are going to, however, though,
15:16move back and forth,
15:17and back and forth this way as well.
15:19Just be careful, though.
15:20I've had several of these,
15:21I was going to say again, classified series,
15:23these exquisite mini-series
15:24where the hands have fallen off,
15:26and I've luckily seen them on the shelf
15:28where the kitty hasn't gotten them.
15:30The legs do split out, they're on ball joints,
15:32so you can split a good far split on Zartan.
15:35You can take the legs and move forward,
15:36you can move them back.
15:37A nice little rotation there at the top of the thigh.
15:40The figure has a decent double hinge on his knee.
15:43Not loose at all, good and tight.
15:45And then the figure does also have an ankle pivot,
15:48an ankle, well, I guess pivot would be up and down,
15:50and an ankle rocker.
15:51Certainly take my heed warning.
15:53I would definitely make use of a displaced hand for Zartan.
15:55Something about Zartan's feet,
15:57and I've noticed that with a couple of the exquisite mini-series,
16:00you can see there's a little spring to them.
16:02There's a spring to a step.
16:04That when you bend the feet,
16:05as flat as you think you may get them,
16:08Zartan, I find, does have some balancing issues.
16:10But again, like, you always can make use of a displaced hand,
16:13so we're just going to detach,
16:15we're going to break the friendship here,
16:17we're going to take ourselves to the displaced hand,
16:18which again, you've got your pegs,
16:19pegles, and the bombs of the feet,
16:20that just plugs onto the displaced hand like that,
16:23and there, wouldn't you know it,
16:24Zartan now can easily stand on his own.
16:27Although Zartan may not likely stand on his own,
16:29you can easily have him standing
16:31with the rest of your Cobra Exquisite mini-series figures.
16:34We've gotten quite a lot so far.
16:35I don't think yet we've gotten ourselves any Dreadnoughts,
16:38other than, of course,
16:40the master of the Dreadnoughts in front of us here.
16:42I don't think we have any Dreadnoughts yet
16:44in the Exquisite mini-series.
16:45I hope, though, that's something that's going to change.
16:48Zartan, though, just as classic as the idea
16:50that he changes looks,
16:51is the fact that Zartan also is always joined by,
16:53you know, Torch, Ripper, Cutter,
16:55and, of course, all the later ones as well.
16:57I was always a big fan of Thrasher and Monkey Wrench.
17:00Maybe that might be something
17:01that we might see ourselves getting with future releases,
17:03but, again, for the rest of the Cobras
17:05that we've got for Exquisite mini
17:06and the 3 3⁄4-inch scale,
17:08yeah, you know, again,
17:08I'm really liking what Hyatt Toys is doing with the line.
17:11The figures themselves are well-detailed.
17:13They've got the posability that you would expect
17:14for a figure of this size,
17:16and especially for G.I. Joe's.
17:17Of the figures, I think, that we've gotten so far,
17:19of the Exquisite mini
17:21and the ones, at least, I've looked at.
17:23I think my favorite would be
17:25Prober Commander No. 1,
17:27maybe Zartan No. 2,
17:28Firefly No. 3,
17:30and then after that, Destro.
17:31Yes, again, while they're still using, again,
17:33a lot of the inspiration from the Classified series,
17:36just overlook the fact
17:37I don't have the hood for Zartan here,
17:40Hyatt Toys is still running
17:41with a really nice line of articulated figures,
17:44super detailed.
17:45They're a little bit more expensive, to be fair.
17:47I mean, like the Exquisite mini series
17:48tend to be selling online
17:50for around $25 to $30 a figure.
17:52But again, like if you're looking
17:54at retail release figures too,
17:56smaller scale figures that we've looked at
17:58even here on this channel
17:59have really ranged from $15 to $20.
18:01So I think they're still comparable for the price.
18:04You're certainly, for that price,
18:05getting a really detailed figure.
18:07Tons of accessories.
18:08Speaking, though, of accessories,
18:09the only one thing that's a bit of a stumbling thing
18:11for Zartan is the fact that, well, yeah,
18:13you can open up the backpack
18:14by putting even the mask in there
18:17as you would have done
18:18with all the Zartans
18:19that we've ever gotten
18:20from the 25th anniversary
18:22of the Vintage Collection,
18:23the Classified series,
18:24all have been able to do
18:25what I'm trying to do right now.
18:27And all the others
18:28have all been successful to do it.
18:29This one just can't really
18:31keep his case closed.
18:32I think it's a shame
18:33that Zartan can't actually
18:34hold the face inside his backpack
18:36when the Vintage toy has done that
18:37the 25th anniversary.
18:39I mean, you rhyme off Zartans.
18:40They have tend to come included
18:42with the same accessory.
18:43And yet, so far,
18:44Hai has been really the only company
18:46that hasn't had an ability
18:47to keep the mask inside the case.
18:50Zartan, though,
18:50when it comes to displaying
18:51this guy on the shelf,
18:52I might just have the look
18:53that you're looking at right now.
18:55Mask in one hand,
18:56perhaps the blade
18:57or the pistol in the other.
18:58At least there's storage space.
19:00While you can't successfully
19:01do it with the mask,
19:02you can at least do it
19:03with the knife or the gun.
19:05The knife just goes
19:06sheathed on the back.
19:08Granted, you don't have to make
19:09the noise while you're doing it.
19:10And then there's a convenient peg
19:11located on the side of the pack,
19:13similar to the classified,
19:14where you can just plug
19:15the pistol there.
19:16I've got it left off right now.
19:18I know exactly where it is.
19:20And I know exactly
19:20where also those eye brackets are.
19:23The fun thing in the sell
19:24of this line is the fact
19:25that you can,
19:26like with other exquisite minis,
19:28you can then also take
19:29that eye bracket
19:30and you can attach it
19:32to other display stands.
19:33So depending on how many stands
19:34you have in your collection
19:35will then determine
19:36how big of a terrain
19:37you have the Joes
19:38fighting the Cobras.
19:39All in all, though,
19:40I really like the look
19:41of Zartan.
19:42He keeps the nostalgic look
19:44of what I expect Zartan to have.
19:45Whether you look at that
19:46as being hair or hood,
19:47I know it's clearly a case
19:48in this case.
19:50It is a hood.
19:51I still think that Zartan
19:52has had hair
19:53in some of the episodes
19:54of the classic
19:54Sunbao series.
19:56Now again,
19:56this guy is currently
19:57as a pre-order,
19:58which means he's not
19:59available just yet.
20:00Looking, though,
20:01at some of the go-to sites,
20:03you know,
20:03the listed sites
20:04you always tend to check out
20:05when it comes to Hayat toys,
20:06there aren't many
20:07that seem to list Zartan.
20:09I did go directly
20:09to the source
20:10and I went to highest site
20:11where it currently shows
20:12as a pre-order.
20:13I would imagine this guy
20:14would be dropping
20:15to ship soon.
20:16A big thank you
20:17again to the folks
20:17over at Hayat toys
20:18that did provide
20:19the sample of the
20:19brand new G.I.
20:20Joe Exquisite Mini series.
20:22This was the Master of Disguise
20:23and this was Zartan.
