00:00let's welcome in someone who a played the position b played for the seahawks c is a bay area guy
00:07joining us right now on the river islands guest line here on withered and dibs 95.7 the game
00:11is robert turbin hey robert thanks for coming on man hey what's up fellas thanks for having me um
00:17we love having you on and i we told you this last time our audience loves it when you come on man
00:23because you're your bay area roots they love it yeah no i mean listen i i buried that's my home
00:30um and uh so when you guys call me to hop on man it's always a yes because you know i want to tap
00:36into my bay area uh my barrier folks so appreciate you guys love that love that robert what what is
00:43your read we'll get to the game but what is your read on the christian mccaffrey situation and just
00:50to kind of take you through the last 24 hours we get the word that he's gonna sit out practice he
00:55then he does not practice today kyle shanahan goes through a quick and very guarded media session
01:01but then christian speaks at his own locker um and and kind of gives a lot of optimism to the
01:08situation what what's your read on what we're looking at here yeah initially i'm not even gonna
01:13lie man scary was the word that came to mind uh you know when you when it was first reported
01:19that mccaffrey was going to be questionable for this game but i did um you know feel a little bit
01:25better when christian mccaffrey did have an opportunity to speak to the media and speak
01:30for himself because that's what's really important when a guy can get to the podium and speak for
01:34himself and you know christian mccaffrey strikes me as one of those guys you know that's not going to
01:39go up there and give everybody you know like bs about how he's really feeling uh but you have to
01:45have some kind of concern because i mean you know he's been healthy all off season man and this is
01:51very similar to last year where you know it was everything was kind of good and then it got kind
01:58of funky and it was a little bit back and forth and all of a sudden you know he's out uh he's out all
02:04a year and so that's the scary part it's just like man you know is this thing going to creep back up on
02:10us again you know where he maybe he feels good but he's not good uh and uh and then he's out for the
02:17year so i think there should be some calls of concern for the faithful out there but if christian
02:23says he's okay i think you got to take his word for it how much can a player enact their own will in
02:29a situation like this where you're questionable you might be good to go you might not can a player
02:35influence a medical team the coaching staff enough to be able to play through something like this
02:40not not not in this particular time of the year um you know the the game you know the year is just
02:47getting started now has this been like week you know 15 or 16 and and playoff implications are on the
02:53line or seating is on the line you know players then have a little bit more say uh in terms of
03:00you know being on the field or not uh but because the season is just getting started you know a lot
03:06of that choice is going to be made by the coaches and and really the medical staff and if they don't
03:10really feel like you know see matt can get out there and be c matt um i wouldn't be surprised to see
03:16them sit uh christian mcafree and maybe they knew this all along you know they wouldn't make that
03:21trade for brian robinson jr with the commanders and you know maybe they were side-eyeing something
03:28was going on all along anyway robert turbin used to wear the seahawks uniform played the position
03:34bay area guy joining us here on willard and dibs robert i want to just like uh dig into your experience
03:41as an nfl player when you're injured because i keep kind of taking some positivity not from what he said
03:48but just the fact that he talked because injured players don't usually do that what's that like in
03:54the locker room when you're hurt does the team usually just not even let you speak to the media
04:00oh yeah no i usually stay away from the microphone the only time you get in front of a camera or you
04:06speak to the media is you know pretty much on your own uh on the outside uh you know typically go up to
04:13the podium um you know at the team facility or anything like that it's a lonely feeling when
04:19you're injured man because everybody's going about their day-to-day you know we got practice we got
04:23meetings we got meals we got this we got that we got travel and you know you're in a training room
04:28and you're doing your rehab and you're trying to do everything that you can you know to get back
04:34on on the field you know you feel like you're missing an action a little bit if it's a serious
04:38enough injury you're not involved in those meetings and all the day-to-day stuff uh if it's uh you know
04:44it's one of those injuries where you can get back in a couple weeks uh then perhaps you can still be a
04:49part of the fold but nonetheless it's a lonely feeling man when you have those type of injuries
04:53especially when it's leading up to a game like this in week one rivalry week seahawks and 49ers
05:01does it take away a little bit of the thrill and the sting of a rivalry having this game be in week one
05:06no way no i think it i think it hides it i think it's i think it's awesome i think it's an awesome
05:12way to start the season and we get to start the season with the guys that we hate the most
05:17let's go you know who's going to be able to gain that edge first in terms of the nfc west all of
05:22the conversation that's been happening in the offseason are the 49ers are they back in their
05:27defense you know can they are they going to be as good as they used to be you know can they stay
05:32healthy offensively for the seahawks you know is sam donna going to be the guy that he was last year
05:37right or can they get back to you know the quote-unquote glory days of them you know being a
05:43consistent top team in the nfc and all these all of these things and so i think it hides it you know
05:48you start off week one with a bang of a matchup 49ers seahawks i think it's great for the nfl
05:54robert turbin is our guest here on 95 7 the game all right let's let's dive into some of those
06:00specifics of of the matchup and and the players as well sam donald um will it translate wow how
06:07many jerseys is this for him now is this four i mean it's been such a uh such an interesting ride
06:13for him how do you feel about the fit of sam donald in seattle well i i think it's a good fit
06:19particularly because of who is also the coordinator uh clink kubiak and so when you look at from that
06:24standpoint they've got a good relationship i got a chance to talk to sam donald during training
06:30camp chop it up with him a little bit after practice um and you know the office that they're
06:35running very similar a lot of similarities with the 49ers do a lot of similarities to what sam
06:40donald was doing in minnesota and then obviously as we know uh you know sam donald when he was with
06:46the 49ers you know coach kubiak was over there too and that's where that relationship really started
06:51to form uh and develop between you know those two guys and so you know when you look at it from that
06:57standpoint um you know it fits them really well uh they're able to have great communication amongst
07:03one another you know sam donald he told me that uh there are you know certain pieces of the offense
07:10that uh he ran in minnesota that that's not a part of of kubiak system but he's able to express like
07:18hey when i was in minnesota i liked this and so then coach kubiak implements it and finds a way to
07:24involve those scenarios into the scheme of the offense and so when you're able to have that kind
07:31of communication and there's no ego involved you know kubiak like minutes in the offense forget what
07:36you ran in minnesota that doesn't exist uh so i think because of that they have real potential to
07:42have success this season niners really struggled last year to stop the run they were almost non-existent
07:47against the run and you know the seattle teams got walker the third and charbonnet and they
07:52actually drafted a fullback what do you think about the seattle run game against a young and
07:57emerging niner defense well i think seahawks are going to be intentional about running the football
08:03um but you know they have to prove that that's something that they can do i think they got a
08:08little away from it last season and uh that was just kind of what their system uh looked like
08:15uh but you get a fullback they got a couple blocking tight ends that can really get it done i think
08:20you'll see a lot of you know uh like 12 and and 21 personnel two two running backs one of those
08:26being a fullback of course and a tight end 22 personnel two back two tight end type sets a lot
08:33of motion uh and really being intentional about getting on the like getting yards on the ground
08:39now you know for kendrick walker he's got to be able to stay healthy big question mark for the seahawks
08:44as well you know their number one running back has been in and out of the lineup all summer all
08:49dirt throughout training camp can he sustain himself throughout the season but they got a
08:54backup running back and zach charbonnet that they feel really good about as well so you'll see a
08:59a nice one-two punch from seattle but they got to prove that they can run the ball a piece of this
09:05offense that's unproven and is the offensive line and that's been a big struggle for the seahawks for
09:10the last i don't know like decade or whatever i mean sometimes they're good sometimes they aren't
09:15what's always good for the 49ers their defensive line with the exception of last year yeah uh so
09:19it'll be a good matchup to look out for i'm looking forward to seeing this fullback robbie oots six
09:24three two seventy four converted tight end out of alabama what do you know about a 274 pound fullback
09:31robert no that's that's that's like we were saying the bay that's hella big that's what that
09:37but as a running back i love it you know i got a guy 270 pounds in front of me uh he's gonna be
09:46able to open up and create a lot of space uh for me for me to be able to run through length um i i was
09:51impressed from what i've seen from robbie oots uh this this offseason this training camp uh got a
09:57chance to watch him in the preseason of course break down the film um you know he's not the most
10:03physical guy i i'll admit you know he's not a guy that i i haven't seen him just put somebody on
10:09their behind uh but he is very intelligent he does he knows where to be he does make the block he's
10:15great at making the adjustment in the middle of the play uh and so i think he's a good fit for this
10:20offense robert turbin former seahawks running back is with us here on wither and dibs robert i want to
10:25dig into your running back history and ask you about what the niners are doing in that backfield let's
10:30let's play like christian is fine i don't know if he is but but first of all your review on brian
10:35robinson jr and your thought on on what the niners might be able to do offensively with those two
10:41at times sharing the backfield well robinson jr is a is a is a heck of a player in my opinion i think
10:48he's a good back he could be a starter for anything and you know i think the commanders uh hit them moving
10:56on from brian robinson jr doesn't really have anything to do with him and his skill set i think
11:01more to do with you know how they're navigating the salary cap and and their future assets and and what
11:08they want to be able to do to be able to maintain success with their franchise but if brian robinson jr
11:14got to take over as a number one back the 49ers run game is going to be totally fine uh he's a really
11:20really good player and with the combination of both these guys i think you know obviously it gives the
11:25opportunity to be able to keep christian mccaffrey healthy you can have these guys on the field at
11:30the same time especially when you think about christian mccaffrey and how he can you know run
11:34routes and you know do some damage out of the backfield as a pass catcher uh and so it allows
11:40you know then coach shanahan to even be more dynamic uh with his run game and his run back uh and his
11:48running back so you know they have a system where they want to stretch you wide you know in the run game
11:53uh and and be able to hit some play action off of that create some motion and and and some uh you
11:59know some some trickery there and i think they can do that with both of these backs in the game at the
12:04same time so i think it really opens up uh the playbook a little bit for kyle shanahan and the
12:09playbook has to get executed by brock purdy who is not yet the 53 million dollar man that kicks in
12:15next year but this year i mean he's got that big bag waiting for him robert but he's qb1 what do you
12:21think of brock purdy great year two years ago okay last year now entering a year where he's going to
12:27have to do more yeah he's a good player you know i think what he brings to the position for the 49ers
12:33uh is stability uh and uh 49er fans may not want to hear this but you know i think it's very similar
12:42to garoppolo where garoppolo you know maybe didn't do anything particularly great but you know he
12:50brought a lot of stability at the position he brought some consistency there um i think that the
12:56difference between the two you know brock purdy and jimmy is i think brock is a little bit more
13:00cerebral at the at the position uh and uh you know he's he's just as much of a winner but when it really
13:07counts you know i think he can make more plays you know especially with his legs uh and things of
13:13that nature so they got the right guy the position uh he's going to be really really good for a long
13:18time but you know there is that one question mark though is you know hey when when you got the guys
13:23that aren't available i use not available and you know christian mccaffrey is questionable and so we
13:30don't got the superstars around you you know can can you still you know play the position at a high
13:36level we know that about the high level quarterbacks we know that about passion okay after they traded
13:41tyreek hill and they've been working with average receivers you know since then uh you know can you
13:47still make those kind of plays uh we'll get an opportunity to find that out this season
13:52robert you're you're you're in dangerous territory here with this garoppolo comparison
13:58i felt like i was gonna be you know all i'm trying to say is look brock purdy is clearly a
14:05better player don't get me wrong all i'm saying is that he brings stability at the quarterback
14:10position for the 49ers in the way jimmy garoppolo did when he was the starter that's all it's fair
14:18you're all right i was just saying you're in dangerous territory you did you you saved it you
14:24saved it a little bit i i what's your thought on the west robert what how do you sort of stack up
14:30the division as a whole yeah well i'm by i guess i'm going in dangerous territories again
14:35well because i like the rams i mean i think the rams if they're healthy if staffers healthy
14:41it's hard not to like the rams you know to come out of the mc west as as number one uh and and then
14:48i like seattle and and i and the only reason i like seattle over the niners this year is and trust me
14:54guys i i'm not a homer okay i'm not a seattle seahawks fan i just support the team that's it
15:02you know i i know people there that's about as good as it gets all right uh but the defense i just you
15:08know i'm concerned about the 49ers defense and and i you know i think eventually they're going to be
15:14really good you know it's one of those it's one of those scenarios where they you know it might take
15:20six or seven games before they finally become the 49ers defense that we've been accustomed to seeing
15:26for a number of years it's because of all the attrition and the new pieces and guys getting
15:31back healthy uh but the guys are there you know for seattle and guys are coming back and chenna
15:37new also is back now and uh and so i think the seahawks probably coming second and then the niners
15:43and uh i don't think i don't know how you can believe in the cardinals ever so uh they'll be
15:50in last place in my opinion again man robert it's like me coming over to your house and saying yeah
15:56washington high and newark memorial and american i mean these are all teams that are gonna be better
16:02than irvington i would never do such a thing well you might be factual but if you if you say something
16:08like that these days yeah you know yeah back in my day i i'd look at you like you were a fool
16:14oh fair enough i didn't even go to mission san lose and we'll go ahead and leave that one alone
16:19they just leave them off the list like that that's right good players yeah oh yeah uh robert ton of
16:29fun ton of fun to catch up with you great insight man thank you so much for making some time for us
16:34today thanks fellas
