00:00This guy's on the Giants, and he's one of the newcomers, and so we're really, really excited for the opportunity
00:05to get to know him a little bit.
00:07One of the new Giants starting pitchers, live from Scottsdale here on the River Island's guest line, it's Adrian Hauser.
00:13Adrian, you're on with Willard and Debs on 95.7 The Game. How you doing? Thanks for calling.
00:18Hey, guys. How's it going? I'm doing great. How about yourself?
00:21Well, fantastic, man. Give us the story. What brought you to the Giants this offseason?
00:26Oh, you know, they were in constant contact with us to start the offseason, and, you know, it's a beautiful
00:32park to pitch in and a great park to pitch in, and, you know, with the constant contact and everything,
00:38we felt like it was a great fit and knew that they had a great team here, and, you know,
00:43we just wanted to come on and join the team and help out as much as I can.
00:47I mean, constant contact, does that mean that they were, like, calling you every day, or are they, like, you
00:52know, sliding into your DMs?
00:53I mean, what's that like in the offseason?
00:56No, probably, like, once a week, I'd say. They were probably checking in once every, you know, once every week
01:02or so, yeah. It was about kind of like that.
01:05Okay. I mean, that's pretty good interest, and obviously something, I don't want to, like, journeyman is not the right
01:13word, but you've bounced to different organizations and had varying levels of success.
01:18Something clicked last year, right, especially with Chicago. What did they see? What do you have going on that kind
01:27of made you so desirable to the Giants?
01:31You know, I think it would have to go back all the way to last offseason. You know, I got
01:37DFA'd by the Mets, was in AAA for a couple months, and really, you know, learned the hard way that,
01:44you know, this game is a gift,
01:46and we got to take it, you know, day by day, and had to make some changes, and so I
01:50started with doing a 72-hour fast.
01:53I started the carnivore diet, and then I got in contact with a buddy of mine who works at a
01:59pitching place in Edmond, Oklahoma, called Pitching Works,
02:03and, you know, I got in contact with them and went down there, and we changed the mechanics up and
02:07got in a really good spot going into spring training and, you know, just hit the ground running from there.
02:13Now, Adrian, I know that you don't know us all that well yet. You just touched on a little bit
02:19of a spot for this particular show when you started talking about diet,
02:23and I believe you said you're on the carnivore diet. I think I'm going to need to hear a little
02:28bit more about exactly what that means.
02:31Yeah, so I like to call it the carnivore-ish diet because I cheat a little bit. I get a
02:36few carbs in there every now and then,
02:38but for the most part, in the off-season and as much as I can throughout the season, I'm eating
02:43eggs and meat, particularly. I'm trying to stick with steak mostly.
02:48Yeah, and that's it? Like, that's it? Like, give us a day. Give us an eating day.
02:55Yeah, like a typical off-season, it'd be, you know, like four eggs to start in the morning, just four
03:02scrambled eggs to get the day going.
03:04You go to work out and then come home and maybe have some, you know, some cottage cheese and, you
03:09know,
03:10maybe some leftover steak from the night before and then have steak and eggs for dinner.
03:14I mean, that sounds pretty good to me.
03:17That's awesome.
03:17And I'm looking at your baseball reference and they have you at 6'3", 242.
03:22So when you went 72-hour fast, did that dip down to like 222?
03:26What'd you lose in three days?
03:28Yeah, so that baseball reference number is way off right now.
03:31I'm sitting about 225.
03:35Nice job, Adrian.
03:36Yeah, way to go.
03:37I mean, lean it out, right?
03:39Did you find that difficult to go on a 72-hour fast?
03:43You know, at first I thought it was going to be pretty tough, but then after, like, getting through the
03:49first day
03:49and, you know, my blood sugar dropping and dealing with a little bit of a headache, like, besides that,
03:55just chugged a bunch of water and it was actually pretty easier than I thought it was going to be.
04:00I mean, beyond the mechanics of just, you know, losing that much weight and, like, not eating for three days,
04:06you talked about your mechanics.
04:07What have you done different and are you adding new pitches into your arsenal as well?
04:13No new pitches, just kind of refining all the pitches that I've had, kind of making some grip adjustments,
04:18trying to get some, you know, more movement on some stuff, but everything's been good there.
04:23We're kind of just tinkering with it as much or as little as we need to.
04:28As far as mechanics-wise, kind of that offseason, we got my leg, my lift leg, we got it going
04:35higher,
04:37so I'd get back into my backside a little bit more.
04:40I was getting into my quad a lot the year before, and so I was losing velo and stuff just
04:46wasn't moving right,
04:47and so they kind of identified that, like, my first bullpen down there within, like, five pitches.
04:53And so we kind of just hammered away at that and chipped away, and we got into a good spot
04:57that everything was, you know,
04:59nice and strong and looked way better, and the ball was coming out so much better and easier.
05:04And, you know, added to that, got it, you know, a lot stronger, so that all combined together helped.
05:11New Giants starter Adrian Hauser is with us here, live from Scottsdale on Willard & Dibs 95.7 The Game.
05:18Now, Adrian, speaking of things that we read about you on the Internet, I need to find out the truth
05:24of this
05:25and then also maybe the experience that you had.
05:29It sounds like maybe you have had the propensity at times in your life to vomit while out on the
05:36pitching mound during games.
05:37Is this true?
05:39This is a fact, yes.
05:41Okay, now what's going on here, Adrian?
05:45What's happening out there?
05:48So I've come to find out and realize it's mostly to do with, like, a hot, humid day,
05:54and I just get kind of where I can't really breathe and it gets my stomach kind of churning,
05:59and then once I throw up, I'm good after that.
06:02But, you know, just get it out of the way and, you know, like they say, puke and rally and
06:08head on through the game.
06:10Boot and rally.
06:11We used to use that as well.
06:12So, wait, Adrian, your major league debut was in 2015, September call-up, couple of starts,
06:18and then there was a gap between then and when you got back.
06:22Like, was that your third career outing when you came back in 2018 that you first vomited on the mound?
06:31So, no, I didn't.
06:32It wasn't my first one back.
06:35That was, I think I vomited on the mound for the first time on Father's Day.
06:39Okay.
06:41So that was even better for my dad.
06:42My dad got to see me throw up on TV in front of everybody.
06:45Oh, that's a nice gift.
06:49I mean, it's such pride right there when you, you know, your son actually makes it to the bigs,
06:54and he gets back, and then you see him back there just vomiting.
06:58Is there any part of you that thinks that maybe it's something you should do on the regular?
07:02Is it like a good luck charm, or was that just kind of where you were at the time?
07:07You know, I've kind of thought about it.
07:09It seems like every time that I have thrown up, I've, you know, I've pitched pretty decent after that.
07:14So it may be something that I have to maybe have to try to tap into if I need some
07:18good luck.
07:19All right.
07:19Well, we'll look for that out at Oracle Park this year.
07:23And then what about this?
07:25This is something that pitchers who are younger than you pretty soon are not going to be able to say.
07:31You've got a couple of big league home runs, don't you?
07:34Yes, I do.
07:35Okay, and did they come off of the exact same pitcher?
07:39Yes, they did.
07:40And what did he do to you to deserve that?
07:45He just happened to be the lucky guy, I guess.
07:48He threw me a fastball.
07:51Does it bum you out that you guys aren't, that you can't hit ever again?
07:56A little bit, a little bit.
07:58You know, I kind of joked around there a couple years when I was still in Milwaukee
08:02after when we couldn't hit anymore and trying to be like, hey, you know,
08:06I can pinch hit if we need to and stuff like that.
08:09But, you know, it would be fun.
08:11But obviously I think the game is way better with the guys who actually know how to hit
08:15and can hit a lot better than us in the box.
08:18But it was always fun to get up there and compete
08:21and actually see what it looks like from the other side.
08:23Yeah, no doubt.
08:23And, I mean, now where we are with baseball, if you're down by eight or nine,
08:27you bring in the shortstop or the left fielder to pitch.
08:30And so, I don't know why you couldn't, like, lobby with your new manager,
08:34Tony Vitello, to say, hey, you know, if it's a blowout, let me go ahead and hit.
08:38Hey, you know, that's a good idea.
08:40I might try that.
08:41If you're listening, Tony, I might be coming into your office in the next few days.
08:45Hey, what are your – we're all in the space right now of first impressions
08:49with Tony Vitello.
08:50What are yours?
08:52Oh, it's been great.
08:53I think he's, you know, he's doing what he can making the adjustments.
08:56And, you know, it's just the first couple days with pitchers and catchers here.
09:00But you can tell, like, he's excited and ready to get the season going.
09:03So, you know, I think the anticipation is growing.
09:06And so, it's going to be fun to get the whole crew here
09:09and get everybody in the same building and all get together going into some games.
09:13What's it like for you to be on a new team?
09:15You've done it before, but now you're a giant
09:17and you're out there in Arizona trying to get ready.
09:20Like, what's the process for you to get to know not only the manager,
09:23but the staff and your teammates?
09:26Yeah, you know, it's – you know, you've got to take care of your business,
09:30but also, you know, chat up to guys.
09:32And luckily, you know, we're all in the clubhouse together,
09:35in the weight room together.
09:36So, we're all together and doing drills and everything.
09:38So, you know, you're just making small talk, chatting, you know,
09:41getting to know guys that way.
09:43And obviously, we're eating lunch together and breakfast.
09:45So, as much as you can, you take those opportunities
09:48and just talk to guys and get to know them, see where they're from,
09:50and, you know, just ask as much as you can.
09:52But no carbs, right?
09:55You know, a few.
09:56I had some pancakes this morning.
09:57I couldn't pass those up.
09:59Yeah.
09:59I get that.
10:01Adrian Hauser, new Giants pitcher, is with us here on Willard and Dibs.
10:05Adrian, have you – I know there are some of the Giants hitters are already there.
10:09Have you done any simulated at-bats against specific guys?
10:12And if so, who?
10:14No, I haven't yet.
10:15I think we had our first round of some IBPs today.
10:19So, I think we'll be getting there soon.
10:22Adrian, I tell you what, it's really good to get to know you a little bit,
10:27but especially when it's the first time that we talk to somebody,
10:30we like to do something called the big finish on the way out the door
10:33and ask him maybe some questions that are not the ones you're used to answering.
10:37You good with that?
10:39Yeah.
10:39All right.
10:40Let's have some fun.
10:41Let's fire away.
10:41Let's do it.
10:42Here's the big finish with Giants pitcher Adrian Hauser.
10:45Here's how it works, Adrian.
10:46We've got two categories.
10:47You pick one, and then we've got like three questions out of that category.
10:52So, the categories are sooner or later or pitch perfect.
10:58Which one would you like to do?
11:01Let's go with sooner or later.
11:02Sooner or later, and I hope you do understand the pun on the Oklahoma Sooners.
11:07What is the best thing about living in Oklahoma?
11:12Um, best thing about living in Oklahoma is you can get 75-degree weather on Christmas
11:19and snow in two weeks after that.
11:23Wild.
11:23I mean, and I think that you're more in like the eastern Oklahoma part.
11:27Is it different than being maybe in central or in western Oklahoma?
11:31Yeah, actually.
11:33So, kind of literally straight up I-35 pretty much.
11:37East of that, you've got some hills and trees and stuff.
11:40And then west of that, it is flatland.
11:44I got the drive-through part of it on the way out here, and there's nothing but flatland and windmills.
11:49So, Adrian, you're from a pretty small town, right?
11:52Yes, sir.
11:53What was the population where you grew up?
11:58I have my numbers right.
11:59I think it was a little less than 4,000 people, maybe.
12:02Okay.
12:02And as a big leaguer, like, what was, like, you're acclimated now, I would imagine, to the big city.
12:09But does it fit you well, or are you still a small town guy?
12:13You know, I'm still a small town guy to my roots.
12:15It's, you know, I live in Tulsa.
12:18It's a bigger city than I'm from, but my wife doesn't want to live too far out in the country.
12:22So, I just have to settle with possibly getting some hunting land in the future.
12:26And that's actually perfect, leads us to question number two, which is...
12:30I've had a lot more fun hanging out with my friends that are duck hunters.
12:35Love it.
12:36Adrian Hauser, all right, here's the last one.
12:38Why did you choose Oklahoma over Oklahoma State?
12:44I've always been a Sooner fan my entire life, and it was, you know, it was a dream come true
12:50to be able to have that opportunity to possibly go play for them.
12:54So, you know, I just felt like I couldn't pass that up.
12:57And how does that break down, like, in Oklahoma?
12:59Is it a certain, like, geographical thing where you're Oklahoma or you're Oklahoma State, or is it just based on,
13:06like, your household?
13:08It kind of varies.
13:09Anyways, so speaking, so to speak, my wife, she is Oklahoma State.
13:14She went to Oklahoma State, and she's a cowgirl.
13:18And her sister and her two sisters, actually, both played sports at Oklahoma State.
13:24So, like, their whole side of the family is Oklahoma State.
13:27And then me and my side of the family, except for my niece and my brother's wife, they're all, we're
13:35all Oklahoma.
13:37So, it all kind of just depends.
13:39You might have some house divided, or you might be a full house of Sooner fans or a full house
13:44of Cowboy fans.
13:45Are you all able to watch the game together when they play each other?
13:50Yeah.
13:50Yeah, we're able to if we're ever able to get together.
13:54We're all kind of spread out sometimes, but there's some smack talk going on for sure.
13:58Okay.
13:58And then I wanted to throw this into the mix, too.
14:01So, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, or Jalen Hurts?
14:05Which one?
14:07I got to go with my guy, Baker.
14:09I had a feeling.
14:10I had a feeling.
14:11And by the way, do you still, like, is your nickname Doogie?
14:15Do people call you that?
14:16Yeah, I do.
14:17That's actually my video game neighbor tag.
14:20So, that's what I play as.
14:22Man.
14:23What's your game, Doogie?
14:26I do a little bit of Call of Duty.
14:28It's mostly been Fortnite.
14:30Some people have been telling me I need to get on the new game called Arc Raiders, but I haven't
14:34gotten it downloaded yet.
14:36I love it.
14:37I love it.
14:38Adrian, we feel like we know you a little bit better.
14:40Can't wait to meet you in person over at the ballpark.
14:42Thank you so much for coming on.
14:44Best of luck, man.
14:46Absolutely.
14:46It was good getting to know you guys.
14:48Can't wait to meet you.
14:49And I appreciate you guys having me on.
14:51All right.
14:51Best of luck, man.
14:52There it is.
14:52That's Adrian Hauser.
14:54Doogie.
14:54That's Doogie.
