Health check: How many years can citizens in the EU expect to live healthily for?

In 17 EU countries, women are expected to have longer, healthy lives at birth than men. However, men typically spend more of their lives without activity limitations.

00:00For how many life years can EU citizens expect to live healthfully?
00:08In the EU, the number of healthy life years at birth in 2023 was 63.3 years for women and 62.8 years for men.
00:17Men in Malta, Italy and Sweden lived the longest healthy lives,
00:21while the lowest amount of healthy life years was found in Latvia, Estonia and Slovakia.
00:27Among women, Malta also recorded the highest number of healthy life years, followed by Bulgaria and Italy.
00:33By contrast, women report the smallest amount of healthy life years in Latvia, Denmark and Finland.
00:40Overall, life expectancy was 84 years for women and almost 79 years for men across the EU.
00:47This means that a significant portion of people's lives is spent with activity limitations.
00:52Men generally spend a greater share of their lives without activity limitations compared to women.
00:58The expected number of healthy life years at birth was higher for women than for men in 17 of the EU countries.
01:05Despite the difference between the sexes generally being small,
01:08women in Bulgaria, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia had more than three years of a healthier life than men.
01:14On the other hand, the Netherlands is the only EU country where the gap in favor of men exceeds three years.
